Hyperlab

with Vincent Jacquier, Angelo Benedetto, Ali-Eddine Abdelkhalek, Jean-Vincent Simonet, Clément Rouzaud

In collaboration with the HYPEROUEST music festival, ECAL students were given the opportunity to design a visual installation in the room adjacent to the festival's ephemeral club, located on the Veillon wasteland in Crissier. For this project, 1st-year students worked in groups, mixing Bachelors in Graphic Design, Media & Interaction Design and Photography. Their main objective was to create powerful and creative visual sequences around the central theme of "HYPER". At the same time, second-year students in the Graphic Design option enriched this project by developing the exhibition's visual identity. These interdisciplinary collaborations stimulated exchanges and encouraged visual cohesion, connecting the different ideas and reinforcing the "laboratory" and experimental aspect of the project.

with Angelo Benedetto, Guy Meldem, Sébastian Strappazzon

Workshop with Strappazzon With the aim of broadening the horizons of graphic design students beyond the media traditionally explored during their training, Sebastian Stappazzon, co-founder of AVNIER – one of today's hottest streetwear brands launched in collaboration with French rapper OrelSan – runs a week-long workshop at ECAL. From the proposals imagined by the students, a capsule collection was born, produced in a limited edition. The entire collection will be presented and on sale at an exclusive event on 15 December 2023 at La Rasude in Lausanne.

During this workshop, each student had to design a poster presenting a cryptocurrency. Each student had to visually reinterpret the characteristics of his cryptocurrency while taking into account an imposed grid in constant evolution. The posters printed with the plotter will then be overprinted.

An addendum for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

with Roosje Klap

During this workshop, all students were asked to write an extension article for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which together formed an addendum for this historical text. It has formed a new part of the temple that hold and protect our humanity. To provide contextual background to the work, students had been reading and discussing an article each day, followed by a daily topic. By the end of the week, an extension of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was celebrated in the form of 20 flags and a collaborative video of 20×20 seconds.

Lost Records

Lost Records

with Ronny Hunger

Sometimes you don’t know that something has been lost — until it’s found again. How many brilliant lost, neglected and forgotten artists can there be? How many albums have been forgotten? How many have been lost? How many were rejected by labels because of political content, critical album artworks or band names? How many didn’t make it through a release and were eliminated or shelved for lack of success? How many dreams, hopes and statements were destroyed? We found 8 of these forgotten albums and worked on the record cover artworks, we tried to catch the mystical mood of these lost recordings, we tried to capture this forgotten music and tried to tell these incredible stories.

with Sacha Léopold (Syndicat)

During this workshop week, the students worked on the curation, mediation and placement of their own exhibition. The students selected a corpus of works from the iconographic and textual collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, both based in New York. The exhibition space, 1.15m² (refering to the surface area of an F4 poster) is printable, hangable and foldable. It is both a surface but also a base or a volume. The students' results question the means of reproduction and representation of the works in the design of an exhibition.

The Theory of

GRAPHIC DESIGN

The Theory of

The students were presented with subject matter that at one point or another has been characterised as pseudoscience by academics or researchers. These characterisations were made in the context of educating the public about questionable or potentially fraudulent claims and practices–efforts to define the nature of science, or humorous parodies of poor scientific reasoning. The majority of the ideas are unrealistic, and fanatical. Criticism of pseudoscience, generally by the scientific community or skeptical organisations, involves critiques of the logical, methodological, or rhetorical bases of the topic in question. Though some of the ideas continue to be investigated scientifically, others were only subject to scientific research in the past and today are considered refuted but resurrected in a pseudoscientific fashion, such as the world is flat. Other ideas presented here are entirely non-scientific, but have Ibn one way or another infringed on scientific domains or practices.

Redefine/rearrange an old socialist photography magazine. Each student had one year of the magazine, they form groups and work on several years together. The text is completly ignored. Only the Images reappear. The are used in a completly different way then before: Which means they should rearrange, cut, collage them: make something completely new, out of the given material. In the end of the workshop every student had a clip-stitched Magazine of 32 Pages. They all be bound as a book.

Graphic design is a powerful tool to connect, explore, provoke, research, reveal, question and dig through the world narrative that surround us. Using graphic design tools students were tasked to research global issues, working as multidisciplinary practitioners to develop outstanding concepts for visual communication. The theme of the workshop is  Ideas for the Future . The workshop was divided into groups that worked through various fields of interest. Each group had to work on its own assignment, focusing on a singular question for the  Future . Groups explore the subject by visually reviewing, researching, reflecting and reconnecting to political, economic, ecological and social challenges. On the final day, questions for the future will be presented in a collective exhibition of publications, posters, visual essays, objects or even performances. The students were given a cone with 3 yards of yarn. This sewing machine yarn represents a line. The students were asked to draw with this line and create letters. A session of uncontrolled experimentation followed. Some people got frustrated because the material was not behaving the way they expected, others got lost in labour intensive try outs. The design process was speeded up by demanding quantity over quality. The students produces a rich collection of specimens, failures, surprises and typographic inventions. Quality surfaced by looking at the possibilities of the results, not the results themselves. Students were given more time to concentrate and dig deeper for more options of a single experiment. They were asked to create a systematic sequence to expand their type treatment into a series of results. How can you make a system grow? Students seemed to be relieved when they were asked to translate their experiment in the computer. How do you Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop behave when you are wishing for a type treatment that includes gravity, three-dimensionality, texture or something else you witnessed while working with analogue material? This workshop turned out to be a research on how an analogue reference can make you look for a different way to work digitally. Type was a platform for introducing them to an alternative design process.
