Image Creation BA1S2 – Insta Books In the age of social media, Instagram has become a true space for graphic experimentation. This semester, first-year Graphic Design students created a printed edition of at least 100 pages, exploring the question: what does it mean to design for Instagram? Through this investigation, they examined the platform s visual codes, its attention-driven dynamics, and the graphic forms it inspires. Each project reflects on how these creations can be translated, extended, or reinterpreted in the digital space. Balancing printed matter and online presence, these works outline new ways of inhabiting both images and networks.

Manor Cultural Prize 2026 awarded to Lucas Erin Congratulations to artist Lucas Erin, ECAL graduate, who has been awarded the 2025 Manor Cultural Prize for the canton of Vaud. The jury was impressed by his approach, both precise and poetic. Created in 1982 to support emerging Swiss talent, the Manor Cultural Prize is awarded every two years by a jury of experts. Presented at a key moment in the careers of young artists, the prize offers significant momentum for their work and contributes to the promotion of contemporary art in the canton of Vaud. The award also includes a solo museum exhibition at MCBA and the publication of a catalogue. Born in 1990 in Clamart, France, Lucas Erin holds a Master s degree in Visual Arts from ECAL, where he also worked as a teaching assistant for several years. His practice spans installation, sculpture and video. Deeply interested in the notion of contact, as traced through objects, and attentive to the shifting boundary between interior and exterior, Lucas Erin explores what succeeds or fails in the act of exchange. Through carefully constructed arrangements, found objects and meticulously crafted sculptures, he creates spaces rich with overlapping histories and emerging narratives. Influenced by thinkers of creolisation, his process relies on association, recovery and displacement to allow new meanings to emerge within the exhibition space. His work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions in Switzerland and France, and has also been featured in numerous group shows. Between 2013 and 2020, he was actively involved in the independent art scene as co-founder of Happy Baby Gallery in Crissier, a team member of La Colonie in Paris, and a collaborator on various curatorial projects between Paris and Lausanne. The artist will present a solo exhibition in the Project Space at MCBA in autumn 2026, accompanied by a publication. lucaserin.com @_lucas.erin_

Born in 1995 and graduating from ECAL in 2018 with a Bachelor s degree in Media & Interaction Design, Alfatih, who lives and works in Lausanne, has been awarded the Prix La Mobilière 2025. Sara De Brito Faustino winner of the Prix Françoise Champoud 2024 Congratulations to photographer Sara De Brito Faustino, ECAL graduate, who wins the Prix Françoise Champoud 2024, an award that will support the development of her promising artistic career. The Fondation Françoise Champoud has just awarded its annual prize to talented photographer , an alumnus of ECAL. The prize, endowed with CHF 50,000, is awarded alternately in the fields of lyrical art, performing arts and art & design, supporting high-potential emerging artists. Sara De Brito Faustino, awarded in the art & design category, won over the jury with her striking artistic project, which explores the meanders of memory through disturbing and poetic images. Graduating with a Bachelor s degree in photography from ECAL, Sara De Brito Faustino distinguished herself with her graduation work A Home with No Roof (previously named “Toute petite et vilaine”), a project that had already won her the Vevey Images Prize at the ECAL graduation ceremony in 2023 . His singular approach consists in reconstructing, from fabricated and cobbled-together elements, scenes evoking missing memories, like fragments of recomposed reality. According to Florence Grivel, journalist and member of the jury, her work is “powerful and gripping, in which an ambivalent and troubling reality is narrated, in which the missing memory is restored from surprising elements”. Winning the Prix Françoise Champoud is a major boost for this young photographer. “This financial support is a precious help that will enable me to pursue my projects and devote myself fully to my art”, confided Sara. The artist plans to exhibit her project A Home with No Roof in its final version at L Appartement, Vevey, from November 27. This monographic exhibition will mark a crucial stage in her career, revealing to the public a universe that is both intimate and universal, shaped by meticulous and singular artistic techniques. Sara De Brito Faustino, who is also an academic assistant at the ECAL, is determined to build on this success, with the support of the Champoud Foundation. Her passion for photography, born in adolescence and nourished by intense personal experiences, is now recognized by prestigious institutions.

Pax Art Awards,19–22.09.2024,HEK, Basel On Thursday, 19 September at 18:30, the Pax Art Awards will be presented for the seventh time at HEK (Haus der Elektronischen Künste) in Basel. Since 2018, the Art Foundation Pax has been presenting the Pax Art Awards in collaboration with HEK (House of electronic Arts Basel). Starting in 2024, two additional Talent Awards will be introduced for emerging artists from Swiss art schools whose works employ media technologies or reflect on the impact of technology on society and individuals. The project ESC by Emma Grosu, a recent Bachelor Media & Interaction Design graduate and winner of the Talent Award from the Pax Art Awards, will be presented at the HEK from September 19th to September 22nd. ESC Diploma project by , Bachelor Media & Interaction Design Video games allow players to escape into narrative worlds where they hold ‘all the power. In ESC, the game s character seeks to escape his own reality. This reversal examines the notions of freedom and constraint in video games, ironically highlighting the limits of our existence. What would happen if a character became aware of their situation, realizing that they are not in control of their movements but are, instead, imprisoned by them? ESC allowed me to explore concepts of immersion such as breaking the fourth wall and mise en abyme. Inspired by works like ‘The Truman Show and ‘Sword Art Online, I illustrated how the perception of freedom can be an illusion, both in video games and in the physical world

ECAL graduate wins James Dyson Award 2024 (Switzerland) Congratulations to Stefan Troendle, ECAL Master Product Design graduate, who has won the prestigious national James Dyson Award for his diploma project. , a 2022 graduate of the Master of Product Design program, has won the prestigious James Dyson Award for Switzerland with his innovative project, HydrogenCooker. The HydrogenCooker is a green cooking station powered by hydrogen, developed in collaboration with EPFL s Renewable Energy Research Laboratory and Softpower, a startup based in Cameroon. The project addresses a major public health issue: according to the World Health Organization, the use of fossil fuels for cooking and indoor air pollution cause 3.8 million deaths every year in developing countries. The HydrogenCooker offers a sustainable and innovative solution, using hydrogen produced locally by solar energy as an alternative to open-fire or natural gas stoves, generating only water vapor during cooking. The project incorporates design elements inspired by local habits observed during a research trip to Cameroon, ensuring an approach adapted to the specific needs of the communities. The James Dyson Award is an international design competition that celebrates, encourages and inspires the next generation of engineers and designers. It is open to students and recent graduates in industrial design. stefantroendle.com jamesdysonaward.org

Her exploration of new technologies and digital tools, as well as her unique approach to typography, resonates strongly with the practice of the awardee, Laura Csocsán. Both question and reinvent the use of digital devices. Rather than just using them as tools, they turn them into instruments. Images and texts are revisited with computational twists, turning the page into a playground for experimentation and creation. Using automation, artificial intelligence and coding, they question our uses of the digital with their reflexions about systems, structures, both elements being at the center of typographic practice and type design drawing, and also an echo of the work of Josef Müller-Brockmann. veravandeseyp.com DATES & SCHEDULESThursday, December 7, 2023 at 6:00pm Free entryVENUEIKEA Auditorium, ECAL Avenue du Temple 5 1020 RenensWEBSITEsyjmb.foundationTALKVera Van de Seyp, graphic designer, MIT Media Lab Boston/AmsterdamGREETINGS, ECAL Director Lars Müller, President, Shizuko Yoshikawa und Josef Müller-Brockmann Stiftung , award winner

IMAGES VEVEY X ECAL AWARD EXHIBITION: AUGUSTIN LIGNIER,28.06–05.11.2023,L Appartement – Espace Images Vevey From 28 June to 5 November 2023, as part of L Appartement – Espace Images Vevey, Augustin Lignier, winner of the Images Vevey x ECAL Prize 2022, will exhibit Container, his Master s degree project in Photography. The Images Vevey x ECAL Prize was created in 2021 and strengthens the collaboration between the two institutions. Its aim is to offer a first exhibition experience to a student graduating from the ECAL s Bachelor s or Master s degree in photography. The winning work is presented in the form of a monographic exhibition by Images Vevey on the occasion of its biennial or in its permanent space. In the Cinema of L Appartement, Augustin Lignier, graduated of ECAL s Master of Photography programme, presents Container, his graduation project, which won the Prix Images Vevey x ECAL 2022. The artist built a pristine white cube inside his bedroom and, every day for almost two months, he locked himself inside it. As he repetitively and obsessively triggered the shutter release, he put his body s limits to the test to experiment with the apparatus. This performative and conceptual approach resulted in Container, a project that questions the alienating relationship between a photographer and their camera.DATES AND SCHEDULE06.28–11.05.2023 2pm-6pm Wednesday-Sunday Free entryADDRESSL Appartement – Espace Images Vevey Gare CFF de Vevey Main hall (2nd floor)ARTISTOPENINGTuesday, June 28, 6pm

Three ECAL diploma projects win the James Dyson Award 2022 (Swiss) Three ECAL graduates - Yoosung Kim in Master Product Design, Anaïs Lehmann and Lucie Herter in Bachelor Industrial Design - have won the James Dyson Award 2022 for their diploma projects. Zest – – Master Product Design Zest is a tailor-made solution for people with cerebral palsy. It is a model of sports shoes adapted to the motor skills of its users. Made using knitting and 3D printing technology, it can be adapted to any person with motor disorders and allows the creation of customised shoes that meet specific needs. A project made possible thanks to the collaboration of professional athletes with cerebral palsy and a test in the laboratory of the Swiss sports brand On. Line – – Bachelor Industrial Design Line is a 100% natural alternative to the plastic mulching films and sheets that are omnipresent in agriculture and horticulture. This innovative project aims at solving the problem of plastic micro-particles in market gardening and thus reducing soil pollution. Made from linseed oil-treated flax, Line is a highly resistant film that does not release any chemical microparticles into the soil. Its woven strip systems make it very flexible for use in a variety of plantings. R2Home – – Bachelor Industrial Design While 2 000 radiosondes are sent into the atmosphere every day to collect meteorological data, only 20% of them are found. R2Home, a paragliding robot, makes it possible to control the landing of radiosondes and thus minimise economic losses and environmental pollution. Its recyclable materials such as expanded polypropylene protect it from cold, rain and falls. R2Home is a project resulting from the collaboration between Lucie Herter, a student in the Industrial Bachelor s programme at ECAL, and Yohan Hadji, a student in micro-engineering at the École polytechnique de Lausanne (EPFL).

The winning work is presented in the form of a monographic exhibition by Images Vevey on the occasion of its biennial or in its permanent space. Book making workshop

Higurashi book launch In Summer 2019, thirteen students from the ECAL Master s in Photography programme supervised by Milo Keller travelled to Japan to work on thirteen individual projects in collaboration with Japanese photographer Taisuke Koyama within the framework of the Tokyo Photographic Research project. The students artworks range from still and moving images to computer-generated photographic visuals and explore multiple facets of the Japanese megalopolis which is, once again, undergoing major transformation in preparation for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Some projects focus on aspects specific to the city, from the destruction of small residential houses to the construction of the gigantic Olympic Village and the conquest of new territories by the sea. Other works investigate distinctive Japanese culture such as home-cooked food, the appetite for designing humanoid robots, the blending of child and adult worlds in manga, pachinko gambling, the reinvention of ikebana and young girls as ‘rising stars. Finally, the works seek to visually represent more abstract concepts such as loneliness, emptiness and intimacy in a city that, due to its density, size and power, offers a challenging, fascinating and extremely stimulating complexity to the eyes of the thirteen photographers. Higurashi has been presented at Espace Commines in Paris in November 2021, inside the exhibition Automated Photography during Paris Photo. ECAL graduate wins the James Dyson Award (Switzerland) Fabien Roy s (b. 1984, Premier - VD) 2020 diploma project in Master Product Design wins the James Dyson Award 2021 (Switzerland) Thanks to RobustNest, an incubator for newborns adapted to the context of sub-Saharan Africa and developed in collaboration with the EssentialTech Center, EPFL, he wins the sum of CHF 2 300 and the right to be among the finalists of the James Dyson Award worldwide. In second place, another ECAL Master Product Design diploma project will also be presented in this selection: RUEI-01 by Maxwell Ashford (born in 1995, in Ipswich - UK). According to UNICEF, every year in sub-Saharan Africa, 1.1 million newborns die of hypothermia during their first month of life. Developed in collaboration with the EssentialTech Center of EPFL, the CHUV and the HUG, RobustNest is a newborn incubator adapted to the context of district hospitals. Compact, robust and affordable, it allows the transport of patients in vehicles, resists frequent power cuts thanks to its thermal battery designed by EPFL and is characterized by components that are easily replaceable locally. This ensures that babies are kept warm. Fabien Roy s project will also be highlighted on several occasions in September, by being presented at the Milan International Furniture Fair (5 to 10) through two exhibitions (The Lost Graduation Show and Design Switzerland Pro Helvetia) as well as at the Swiss Design Awards exhibition that will take place during Art Basel at the end of the month.
