ECAL at Solothurn Days 2021; Upcoming Talent Award + Nominations for the Swiss Film Awards,20–27.01.2021,Solothurn ECAL at Solothurn Days 2021; Upcoming Talent Award + Nominations for the Swiss Film Awards UPDATE: Congratulations to Lucas del Fresno, who won the "Upcoming Talents" Award (CHF 15 000.-) on the occasion of the Solothurn Film Festival with his diploma film made as part of the ECAL/HEAD Master s Degree in Cinema (Directing option). This Suissimage/SSA Société Suisse des Auteurs award, which honors emerging talent, presented 27 short films of all genres. It should be noted that the film was partly produced by Ketsia Stocker and the sound was the work of Vuk Vukmanovic, both of them in the framework of their specialization in Master Cinema as well. With the participation also of Theodora Menthonnex from the option Sound of Bachelor Cinema. UPDATE: On the occasion of the Solothurn Film Festival, the nominations for the Swiss Film Awards 2021 were revealed. As a result, the ECAL and its graduates were honoured six times. Public Award in Hyères for Oubadah Nouktah Congratulations to Oubadah Nouktah, a graduate of the MAS in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship, who won the Audience Award in the Fashion Accessories category at the 35th International Fashion, Photography and Accessories Festival at the Villa Noailles, Hyères ECAL also had three other former graduates who were finalists in this category (Joanne Guiraud - Jil Jander - Giulia Chéhab) as well as two in the Photography category (Laurence Kubski - Alina Frieske)
Emerige Award to Loucia Carlier Congratulations to Loucia Carlier, a BA and MA in Fine Arts graduate from ECAL, who won the 7th Emerige Revelations Scholarship This scholarship offers her a workshop and professional support for one year, as well as 15,000 euros to produce her first solo exhibition at the Art Concept Gallery, Paris. The Emerige Revelations Scholarship is a programme aimed to support the young French scene in partnership with an internationally renowned gallery. Each year, after a selection process lasting several months, 12 artists are chosen to exhibit collectively under the curatorship of Gaël Charbau. The series of books “Visual Archives” is the result of research projects initiated and carried out at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. It examines unexplored legacies of designers, authors and brands. Documents and visual material from archives are accompanied and contextualised by critical essays. Thus far, two volumes from this series ("Hermann Eidenbenz. Teaching Graphic Design" + "Bobst Graphic 1972–1981") have been co-published by Triest Verlag and ECAL, and they will be presented jointly by their editors. ECAL at the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020,09–22.01.2020,Lausanne On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020 , ECAL particpates in several projects. On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020, ECAL particpates in several projects: --- Design of the cauldron, medal trays and podiums The cauldron, the medal trays and the podiums are three of the most symbolic elements of the Olympic Games. Second-year Industrial Design Bachelor s students from the ECAL were tasked with designing them. The students had to meet certain operational constraints and technical requirements: The cauldron must be able to be supplied with wood pellets, the result of a partnership between several organisations in the Vaud region, including the Lignum Vaud, which brings together all the regional players in the wood sector. This ecological innovation makes this cauldron the most eco-responsible in the history of the Olympic Games. It must also be removable and an integral part of the Games legacy. The podiums would have to be assembled outside at the last minute, often on uneven ground. They needed to be solid, light and large enough for several athletes. The medal trays had to be big enough to hold both medals and mascots. Cauldron Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Student: François Lafortune Production: C-FOR! + Ecole de la construction This cauldron project took inspiration from “freeskiing” culture, seeking to reflect it in both style and substance. Freeskiing is the world of skateparks and snowparks, with which many young people are very familiar. The installation comprises a mini jump and a ramp, with the cauldron placed at the top. The project s designer, François, envisaged that it would be an integral part of the Opening Ceremony and that the cauldron could be lit by a freerider. After Lausanne 2020, the installation is set to be converted into part of a permanent skatepark for the people of Lausanne. Podium Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Students: Louis Bétin + Theo Luvisotto + Estelle Rougerie Production: Ecole de la construction The podiums juxtapose the outlines of three mountain ranges where the competitions are being held: the Jura mountains, the Vaud Alps and the mountains of St Moritz. So you ll be nice and warm, and all set to go cheer on your favourite athletes!” Mapping of the BodyCity Show Unique creation imagined for Lausanne en Jeux! - the animation program of the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 - BodyCity is a show where arts and urban sports meet in an impressive open-air setting, on the place Centrale of Lausanne. Five performances will take place in public on January 9, 11, 12, 18 and 19, 2020 at 6 p.m. "Bodies in fusion with the city", it is from this strong image that Nicolas Musin directed BodyCity, a contemporary show questioning the relationship of young generations to the city. On an open-air stage representing a city in constant mutation,more than 50 performers aged between 9 and 30 years will cross their disciplines from January 9, bringing together urban arts and sports suchas skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading, scooter, parkour and dance. Imagined within the framework of Lausanne en Jeux!, this show is above all a work of youth carried by art schools and urbandisciplines training centers established in the Lausanne conurbation. BodyCity was thus able to bring together different Lausanne actors such as the students of the ECAL (conception of video images) of the HEMU (composition of the original music and recording of the soundtrack), thedancers of the Ecole-Atelier Rudra Béjart (dance and percussion), JDS Events (hip hop, breakdance) aswell as the riders of La Fièvre and the tracers of X-Trem Move. A meeting between different cultures and disciplines that the director Nicolas Musin has managed to reunite in order to offer a unique and unprecedented show in Lausanne. The mapping of the show was thus created by the students of the Visual Communication Department (BA Graphic Design, BA Photography, BA Media & Interaction Design) under the direction of Vincent Jacquier, Angelo Benedetto, Jean-Vincent Simonet and Mitch Paone while editing was managed by Amaury Hamon and Clément Lambelet.

Exhibition Marsotto Lab, Milano 2018 & 2019,09.04.2019 In partnership with the Italian marble manufacturer Marsotto LAB, ECAL Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship students present a series of home accessories devised during a workshop with French designer Pierre Charpin. The Italian marble manufacturer that entrusted the project development to ECAL Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship with a clock collection for last year s Milan Design Week, chose to repeat the collaboration to create home accessories for this year s edition. Marsotto LAB, the new laboratory of the family business founded in 2018 for which the students had worked before, gives talented young aspiring designers an opportunity to present simple yet functional objects while learning about the specific properties of marble, namely its weight, hardness and aesthetics. A tour of the factory in the outskirts of Verona provided the students with a unique opportunity to discover the Marsotto manufacturing plant as well as the leading-edge machines that enable them to optimise production while maintaining the level of handcrafted quality to which the Marsotto brand has been equating for six generations now. After their trip, the students were able to develop their ideas alongside Pierre Charpin, the French designer who shared with them his enthusiasm for perfect and well-balanced shapes. The result is an original and surprising collection of kitchenware (a champagne bucket, containers, trays and other accessories) vases and incense burners, all these objects form a fresh yet useful range that aims to complement the marble furniture collections created by renowned designers for Marsotto edizioni, a brand that has been internationally successful for a number of years. www.lab.marsotto.com

ECAL book 2018 To be a filmmaker in 2018 is to be a bit of a spiritualist. The rarefaction of the film object, humble, palpable, which weighs in the hand, is a fact. Its historical place of diffusion, the theatre, is also disappearing in Europe. Even DVDs and USB keys are relics of yesterday s world. Modern computers don t care about the ports where these objects could drop anchor. There is hardly any material trace of the cinematographic creation anymore. Some data stored on a cloud on the other side of the world, wind in a cloud. The filmmaker s job is therefore to produce the invisible for nomadic souls, not to say wandering souls, in a bus in Tokyo or a café in Denver. It is to speak to the spirits. There is no nostalgia in this observation of the times, just the desire to adapt to the Zeitgeist. At ECAL, we love objects. Like Georges Perec, who was "all about the language that surrounds things, about what s underneath, about everything that feeds them, about everything that s injected into them. Because it is a language, the cinema is matter. It agglomerates what we are, we the creators, we the spectators, in a communion of thought. To testify to this encounter, an object was needed. And the most beautiful of all: a book. To say what nourishes us, but also what we give to eat. The encounters, the essays, the filming, the trips, the debates that make up the living and vibrant body of our school. The one that asks the only question that matters: for whom are we doing what? May this book be the Ouija board that allows us to communicate with the spirits, here and elsewhere, today and tomorrow. Challenge Debiopharm-Inartis 2018 The Debiopharm-Inartis 2018 Challenge gave a prize of 25,000 francs to a Vaud team, made up of students from the IMD business school, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and ECAL (Georg Foster, Garance Krengel - MAS in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship). More real than reality, the images created by 3D software are mainly used in the advertising and entertainment industries. The photorealism of these photographic visuals blurs the boundaries between the real and the virtual. Thaddé Comar – May 2018 Mai 2018 is an investigation into the relationship between the media system and activist events. Fifty years after the events of May 1968, the beginning of 2018 saw the birth of a willingness to join forces and to oppose the reformist intentions of the government. Presented as a package, this project includes different types of images and symbols highlighting various formats, languages and aesthetics. Media elements come alive, various pieces of information converge, temporality is distorted into a reality shifting between transparency and opacity.
