8 ECAL graduates won Swiss Design Awards 2018 Big success for ECAL during the Swiss Design Awards 2018 ceremony at Art Basel with 8 graduates awarded on a total of 17 winners. ECAL also had 20 graduates amongst the 50 finalists. Regarding the Swiss Art Awards 2018, ECAL graduates won 2 important prizes. Jeudi 24 mai 2018, 18h Auditoire IKEA, ECAL Beatrice Trueblood Designer et directrice des publications, Mexico City Née en 1938 en Lettonie, Beatrice Trueblood est engagée en 1966 par le Comité d Organisation des JO de Mexico en tant que Directrice des publications, à la tête d une équipe internationale de 250 personnes. Elle co-crée avec Eduardo Terrazas l identité visuelle du programme Mexico 68. De 1972 à 1975, elle est Directrice des publications du Comité Olympique mexicain, puis de l Université autonome métropolitaine de Mexico. En 1976, elle fonde sa propre société, où elle édite des livres d art sur la culture mexicaine. Eduardo Terrazas Designer, architecte et artiste, Mexico City Né en 1936 au Mexique, Eduardo Terrazas est designer, architecte, muséographe, urbaniste et artiste. Nommé Directeur du programme Urban Design par le Comité d Organisation des JO de Mexico, il est le co-concepteur du logotype et des éléments de l identité visuelle de Mexico 68. Après les Jeux, il poursuit sa carrière pluridisciplinaire et participe à de nombreux projets pour son pays et sur la scène internationale. Collaboration with Marsotto Lab 2018 On the occasion of the Milan International Furniture Fair (17 th -22 nd April 2018), Marsotto Lab and ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne are presenting a collection of table and wall clocks that the MAS in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship students designed during a workshop with Jaime Hayon. Further to the growing success of the Marsotto Edizioni collections, which are collaborations with today s major designers, the Italian marble specialist launched Marsotto Lab. This new platform will enable the work of young and promising designers as well as that of students from art and design schools to be produced. The family business entrusted ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne, and more specifically its Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship students, with the Marsotto Lab s first edition. The students were given the opportunity to highlight the material properties while working on table and wall clocks. During their visit to the manufacture near Verona, the students discovered the impressive production plant, which has been recently optimised with the acquisition of new, cutting-edge equipment. With an experience in marble handed down from generation to generation, as a company, Marsotto excels at combining technology and artisans know-how to design ever more innovating and contemporary pieces. Following their trip, the students were given the opportunity to develop their ideas with the Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, who wished to share his inspiration and his very forward-looking vision of design. This creative exchange resulted in the development of several clock projects with distinct shapes and production techniques.

Solothurner Filmtage. Two other BA Cinema films were also in competition (Lou Rambert Preiss s "Les Zumains" and Magdalena Froger s "Les Intranquilles"). 10 Best Photo Books of 2017 by The New York Times Congratulations to Laurence Rasti, ECAL Bachelor Photography graduate, whose diploma project (published by Edition Patrick Frey) was selected among the 10 Best Photo Books of 2017 by The New York Times.
Collaboration with RETROSUPERFUTURE 2018 After a few collaborations with labels specialized in the fashion industry, such as APC or Carhartt, Retrosuperfuture and ECAL have teamed up to celebrate to work again with the students from the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship. They have worked on surprizing and festive eyewear and sunglasses but also more commercial pieces for the classic collections. Antiquity Savvas Laz The celebration capsule collection I created for RETROSUPERFUTURE trakes us back to antiquity and specifically in ancient Greece. I focused on the iconic and best selling glasses, Ilaria, that inspired me for its feminine and dynamic shape. Taking the laurel crown as a starting point, a symbol of glory in ancient times, I decorated the Ilaria glasses as a reference to women who already used to decorate their outfits, dresses, hands or hair with pieces of jewellery. This symbol of glory is also a perfect way to graphically celebrate the 10th anniversary of the brand, as an award for all that has been accomplished. Viadotto Angele Fourteau This project is inspired by the graphical structures and the aerial lines of inconic bridges and viaducts from Italy. I was interested by the idea that those lines support the entire structure and at the same time connect two places exactly like the metallic nose pad in the Panama or Giaguaro SUPER s iconic shapes. For the 10th anniversary of RETROSUPERFUTURE I wanted to develop this idea of a bridge in a literal way through glasses, using graphical lines based on architecture. SUPERvision Naroot Pitisongswat These glasses are a perfect metaphor for the future and the visionary spirit of RETROSUPERFUTURE. Since the beginning I was directly seduced by the brand s innovative aesthetic, that takes inspiration (with a lot of respect) on the past through vintage shapes of classic glasses. This contemporary vision is represented here by an extrusion of the TUTTOLENTE iconic shape that emphasize the character of the brand and celebrates its 10th anniversary - like binoculars that brings you further in the future. MARS Maximilian Maertens For this project I was first inspired by the subtle lines of the TUTTOLENTE collection. The clear lines of the glasses create a naked body without any protection or shell yet very strong and sophisticated. For the 10th anniversary of SUPER, I wanted to design a unique piece that illustrates strength and lightness at the same time: a transparent mask assembled on a metallic helmet in order to show a clear contrast between these two elements, as a celebration of the past and the future.

Book and exhibition «Un paysage de la modernité»,12.10.2016,Gallery l elac, ECAL «Un paysage de la modernité», premier titre de la collection «Les Cahiers de l Ouest» (Editions Infolio), propose une étude réalisée par Bruno Marchand, professeur à l Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), qui montre combien l Ouest lausannois porte la marque du Mouvement moderne, notamment dans ses ensembles bâtis et son architecture du logement. Dans le cadre de cet ouvrage (réalisé graphiquement par l Atelier Poisson), les étudiants de 2e année en Bachelor Photographie de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, sous la direction de Matthieu Gafsou, ont offert leurs regards photographiques sur cette thématique. «Les étudiants ont reçu pour mission de réaliser des images personnelles, faisant découvrir les lieux dans leur usage. Certains auront parfois élargi quelque peu le territoire de leurs investigations photographiques, non par commodité mais bien pour rendre compte du point de vue de l habitant et de son rapport vécu au quartier. Concrètement, chaque étudiant s est vu attribuer une zone, délimitée très précisément, regroupant un ou plusieurs ensembles de logements. Pendant presque un an, ils ont dû se soumettre à la contrainte de se limiter à cette portion de territoire. Il s agit d un des exercices les plus difficiles de la photographie: rendre exotique ce qui nous est tellement familier qu on ne le regarde plus. Ce d autant plus que la zone couverte est très petite et ne permet pas d échappatoires stylistiques, de subterfuges formels. Le banal peut devenir pittoresque, sublime ou beau. Tout est question de point de vue. Et c est bien en mettant en œuvre une telle démarche que l on développe son langage. Que l on apprend à faire une photographie qui n est plus seulement soumise à la magnificence du sujet mais qui participe aussi de la fabrication de ce dernier. C est à mon avis lorsque l on comprend cette nuance que l on devient un véritable photographe. Pour parvenir à saisir autre chose que la stricte surface du monde, il faut s y plonger. Rencontrer les gens, oser, recommencer, revenir, encore et encore. L exercice apprend la lutte permanente de la création contre l usure ou l égarement. Il permet aussi de découvrir que le métier de photographe peut difficilement se pratiquer seul. Ce projet a abouti à autant de séries qu il y a d étudiants. Quinze séries avec leur cohérence propre, leur esthétique, leur histoire. Pour les besoins de ce cahier thématique, il a fallu faire en sorte que les visions de chacun se rencontrent. Plutôt que d amoindrir les photographies, cette diversité des approches et des styles en dit beaucoup, me semble-t-il, sur ces quartiers résidentiels discrets, si typiques de la Suisse. «ECAL Graphic Design» book and exhibition,03.03–08.04.2016,Gallery l elac, ECAL On the occasion of the release of the “ECAL Graphic Design” book published by JRP|Ringier, ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne presents from 4th March to 8th April at the Gallery l elac (opening on Thursday 3rd March 2016 from 6pm to 8pm) an exhibition of projects realised by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction. In relation with this event, François Rappo, Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction Professor, will give a lecture titled “Next” on Thursday 24th March 2016 at 6pm in the IKEA Auditorium, ECAL. IMAGES HD ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Edited by the Gavillet & Rust studio, the book revolves around a long succession of tracking shots in which projects are not classified in categories, but organised by colour. The exhibition design orchestrated by Adrien Rovero is based on the same concept, allowing a total flexibility of the exhibition. Caroline Buttet – World Wide Gaming World Wide Gaming is a geolocation-based skill game. This internet platform allows different teams to represent their cities in a virtual tournament. Each team plays with a mobile, and has to aim at cities as accurately as possible, by moving their phone in space. Working on that project gave me the opportunity to develop playful and surprising concepts about the perception of space and distances. Oh, and now, I know where Riga is.

At the same time, an image of our modern society emerges. Newspapers no longer serve solely to convey information, but also to give the reader a certain type of entertainment. And so it comes about that we are confronted with a load of rubbish every day. The diary helps me to digest and process this trash. As with the daily news, I had to produce on a daily basis. ECAL graduate awarded at Arles Bravo à Yann Gross, diplômé du Bachelor Photographie, qui a gagné le «Dummy Book Award» avec «The Jungle Book» à l occasion des Rencontres d Arles. Pour ce prix d aide à la publication d une maquette de livre, doté d un budget de production de 25 000€, les organisateurs avaient reçu près de 250 maquettes venues de 40 pays et sélectionné 30 finalistes
