Exhibition and book Vertiginous Parallels Project
Exhibition and book Vertiginous Parallels

Exhibition and book Vertiginous Parallels From November 14 to December 4, 2014, Elac Gallery presents Vertige des correspondances (Vertiginous parallels), an exhibition by ECAL s Fine Arts Master students, while ECAL launches an eponymous publication. The show and the book are the twofold outcome of a research project directed by Julien Fronsacq with the support of HES-SO/University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland. The works of Charles Blanc-Gatti (1890-1966) are largely unknown. In his search for synesthetic harmony, this musicalist painter also played with a loss of spatial markers. These two sides of Blanc-Gatti s art are explored in this project, through the relationship the artist entertained with the alpine space. The show presents a novel selection of artworks and documents by Charles Blanc-Gatti, together with works by student-researchers Jérôme Baccaglio, Anaïs Defago, Arthur Fouray, Julien Gremaud, Marine Julié, Emanuele Marcuccio, Rubén Valdez and Linda Voorwinde. Vertiginous Parallels is also a bilingual (FR/EN) publication comprising 188 pages with 85 reproductions from Blanc-Gatti s archives. Published by ECAL and distributed by Presses du réel, the book is edited by Julien Fronsacq in collaboration with Lucile Dupraz, with graphic design by Marietta Eugster and Teo Schifferli, and photographs by Jonas Marguet. Experts from various fields have contributed essays, including the music specialist Maxime Guitton, the art historian and curator Gallien Déjean, the cinema historian Teresa Castro, the artist and historian of medicine Jelena Martinovic, and the art historian and modern danse specialist Sarah Burkhalter. Documents and works by Charles Blanc-Gatti courtesy the Swiss Film Archive, the Swiss Institute for Art Research (SIK-ISEA) and the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne.

ECAL wins 3 awards at the Locarno Film Festival Article
ECAL wins 3 awards at the Locarno Film Festival

ECAL won the award for the best exhibition in Milan

Exhibition and book "Ecal Photography" Project
Exhibition and book "Ecal Photography"

Exhibition and book "Ecal Photography" The exhibition offers a selection of works produced by 58 young talents during their Photography Bachelor curriculum at ECAL. All these images were chosen by exhibition curator Nathalie Herschdorfer, who has developed several internationally acclaimed projects around emerging photography, as well as by Milo Keller, head of the Photography programme at ECAL, and Alexis Georgacopoulos, ECAL director. The scenography of the exhibition is created especially by Swiss designer Adrien Rovero. The “ECAL Photography” book (296 pages, 385 images) supports this event. This book is produced by art publishers Hatje Cantz, with a worldwide reputation for their catalogue of publications on photography. An art school is an image factory. New generations of artists are constantly emerging, joining the marathon of exhibitions and publications from the very first years of their creative lives. In this context, the art school has become a particularly attractive place for ambitious young artists.  This book features a selection of works by photography students from one of the world s top art universities: ECAL, in Lausanne, Switzerland, an institution commited to training artists, graphic designers, industrial designers, typographers, filmmakers, interaction designers, and photographers. Here, students create freely, question the traditional genres, explore new territories, and experiment with and beyond their media. The works revealed by the “ECAL Photography” exhibition and collected in the eponymous book are bound to trace the beginnings of innovative practices in photography. ECAL Graduate awarded by Prestigious Bourse Leenaards Article
ECAL Graduate awarded by Prestigious Bourse Leenaards

Another Game Project
Another Game

Jean-Guillaume Sonnier – Another Game Starting with a role play and then falling in love, Benoît is going to lose everything… Fiction / 19min Synopsis Looking for a flat to rent, Benoît is staying temporarily at a hotel. Having seen that flats are more easily rented to couples than singles, Benoît comes up with the plan to have Jeanne, his neighbour, act as his girlfriend. Through this role play, Benoît will fall under the charm of this young lady who is keen on horse betting, and will let himself be led into an amorous bet that will ruin him. Comments Another Game is a modest and playful film, an elegant cross between a young skater with a broken leg and a mysterious young woman who bets on the racetrack. With its contrasting black and white and lively dialogue, the film pays homage to the lightness of 1960s cinema and brilliantly affirms its belief in romance. Two ECAL photographers honoured with the Dior Prize for Photography 2025 Article
Two ECAL photographers honoured with the Dior Prize for Photography 2025

Two ECAL photographers honoured with the Dior Prize for Photography 2025 Sara de Brito Faustino and Aline Savioz, respectively a graduate and student of the Bachelor s programme in Photography at ECAL, are among the winners of the 2025 edition of the prestigious Dior Prize for Photography and Visual Arts for Young Talents. Organised by Dior in collaboration with LUMA Arles and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie (ENSP), this prestigious award celebrates the next generation of international contemporary photographers. Since its creation in 2018, the Prix Dior has supported the unique perspectives of young artists from leading art and photography schools around the world. Following a rigorous selection process, the ten winners are invited to produce a new work based on the theme ‘Face-to-Face . The winners works, including those by Sara De Brito Faustino and Aline Savioz, are presented in a group exhibition at LUMA Arles as part of the Rencontres de la Photographie until 5 October 2025. This exceptional visibility allows these young talents to engage with an international audience of contemporary photography enthusiasts. Exhibition From 5 July to 5 October 2025 La Lampisterie, Luma Arles prix-dior.luma.orgAlien Love Call by Aline Savioz Created in 2024, Alien Love Call draws inspiration from romantic ideals and the collective imagination shaped by 1950s cinema, 1970s design and popular culture codes, particularly those of science fiction. This project is set in a fictional and fantastical universe, where fulfilment and lightness intertwine. Composed of six images staged and shot in medium format film, the series brings to life a retro-futuristic fiction, telling a love story between two aliens. It explores nostalgia for the future, that paradoxical feeling of attachment to a time we have never known, when we projected an idealised future. Alien Love Call evokes this unique melancholy and creates a visual refuge where romance blossoms in a setting from another time, both familiar and unreal. Through the images, we follow the protagonists in the moments leading up to their meeting, until their rendezvous at the Jazz Club, animated by a caricatured trumpet player in a cinematic atmosphere. @saviozalA Home With No Roof by Sara De Brito Faustino The place where I grew up was a mixture of strangeness and familiarity. It should have been a refuge, but it was the scene of painful moments. Uncomfortable and dysfunctional, it bears the traces of traumas that I can hardly remember, except for deep scars. The only remnants are in the decor of my current flat. This project stems from that, using 1:15 scale models of my house to explore this history in a new light. By reconstructing the space in miniature, I am able to confront it with distance. These scenes become a dialogue with my traumas. The confrontation takes place through reduced objects, body sculptures and plays on scale. My flat becomes a hybrid place, somewhere between shelter and threat. The images convey the identity of a young girl in the making, growing up in imbalance. By deconstructing and reconstructing, bodies become objects, and vice versa. I am both subject and object in this space, confronting what has shaped me. Photography becomes catharsis, bringing me closer to a blurred past. A Home With No Roof questions what it means to face one s history: a silent dialogue to reconcile the intimate. The series is a face-to-face encounter with my traumas, allowing me to become a healthy adult. @colddaily

Visual Identity BA1S2 – Collector Project
Visual Identity BA1S2 – Collector

Visual Identity BA1S2 – Collector During the visual identity course with Adeline Mollard, the students had to develop an identity project promoting a collection chosen by them. Each project includes the design of a catalogue contextualising and presenting the collection, together with the design of a poster. Childhood remnants (2009–2025) By Gaspard Schlatter As part of a project exploring the notion of collection, this work focuses on Beyblade spinning tops from childhood (circa 2009), approached as relics of the past. To evoke wear, forgetting, and nostalgia, the tops are reimagined as fossils or ancient artifacts — marked by time and memory. This project inaugurates a series entitled Childhood Remnants, which reflects on memory and the passage of time through the objects of our youth. trajectoire By Camille Genoud Trajectoire is a retrospective exhibition dedicated to Swiss airmail, based on a collection of vintage letters and envelopes. Selected graphic elements — stamps, postmarks, typefaces, handwritten marks — were extracted, redrawn, and enlarged to offer a contemporary reinterpretation of these postal archives. Souvenirs aus der schweiz By Eve Gremaud Souvenirs aus der Schweiz is a visual identity for a fictive exhibition based on a collection of coffee cream lids — modest yet striking traces of a slower, now-vanished form of advertising design. Images from here and elsewhere engage in dialogue within a graphic system inspired by the collection s original method of classification, somewhere between archiving and storytelling. DUCTUS By Mathis Harmant Ductus is a fictive exhibition dedicated to paintbrushes — and above all, an invitation to engage in creative, hands-on practice guided by movement. The communication materials were developed through an analog, iterative process, where gesture directly shaped form. cherche, collecte, trie, recycle By Eloïse Guillod This project brings together a collection of used batteries, explored as traces of a bygone era and a forgotten aesthetic. Through a fragmented visual identity, it reflects on stored energy, technical language, past advertising narratives, and the question of recycling an object so quickly discarded. MAISON 1:6 By Layana Comte Maison 1:6 is a fictive fashion collection born from a very real wardrobe: a set of Barbie doll clothes kept since childhood. The project explores the relationship between human and miniature scale, playing with both the original size of the doll garments and their enlargement to fit the human body. The collection is recontextualized as a complete wardrobe, oscillating between intimate memory and a critique of overconsumption. AKTA LX By Jonas Zesiger This visual identity project was developed for a mineral collection presented during the AKTA LX event, which brings together enthusiasts and scientists around the theme of the optical identity of minerals. The graphic universe draws from visual codes found in the optical identification process — such as image processing, shapes, contrast, opacity, dispersion, exposure, and the interplay of solid and void. These elements are used to reconstruct the event s title lettering. The layout and information design are based on a grid divided into eight sections, echoing the eight visual aspects explored. Four Corners of The World By Sara Pedersoli When beer becomes a compass for adventure, it can unravel a country s oldest traditions and give insights on their pictorial history. That s how “Four Corners of The World” was born, a playful catalogue that follows the steps of an unknown beer coasters collector who traveled through German speaking countries to observe the brands , and cities history.

Screen Design 2024 Websites developed over a semester according to a book chosen by the students as part of Harry Bloch s Screen Design course, second year Bachelor of Visual Communication. Folklore Fusion Project
Folklore Fusion

Folklore Fusion Folklore Fusion – a CGI character project developed by students in Bachelor Media & Interaction Design at ECAL, exploring the creative collision between Japanese and Swiss folklore through the lens of contemporary visual storytelling. Through the immense popularity of anime, manga, or global phenomena, Japanese narratives and visuals have conquered the world, shaping pop culture and popularizing themes from Japanese folklore in Western media. In this context, Folklore Fusion explores the creative interplay between tradition and modern visual storytelling with a cutting-edge CGI character project. After an intense trip through Tokyo s vibrant neighborhoods, rich history, architecture, and local legends, ECAL Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students created the Swijūs—fusion of “switzerland” and “Kai-Jū”—hybrid creatures blending Japanese and Swiss folklore. Each student focused on a specific district of Tokyo, merging its cultural and architectural identity with legendary figures from both traditions to craft unique narratives. By studying clichés and stereotypes, they reinterpreted cultural symbols to create an unexpected fusion between the two worlds. Behind a seemingly naive approach, Folklore Fusion deeply investigates the capabilities of modular design system in both storytelling and visual language, following detailed creation guidelines that ensure balance between the two folklores. Much like a successful phenomenon expanding its range of media, the project plays with multiple cross-media formats that reflect how popular culture circulates in the digital age. It features an authentic trading card game (TCG) collection that easily fits into other existing decks, with various levels of rarity and immersive augmented reality (AR) content that brings the Swijūs to life. A magazine-style printed edition documents research inspirations, while an interactive online map allows exploration of a reimagined Tokyo where each Swijū watches over its district. Beyond paying homage and respect to Japanese culture, Folklore Fusion and its Swijū become imaginary artifacts of an era marked by cross-cultural influences and shared narratives.Magazine of Fusion Explore the bilingual Folklore Fusion Japanese-English edition, a magazine-style book printed with metallic pantone. Service Design - 2025 Project
Service Design - 2025

Service Design - 2025 During the Service Design course, the 3rd year of the Graphic Design, Photography and Media & Interaction Design bachelors had to create multi-media projects. A collaboration of the Visual Communication department which had as subject the SDGs (*Sustainable Development Goals). The theme was called "For a good cause, make the SDGs a reality" and its objective was to allow students to develop a cause that is close to their hearts. Each project consists of at least two different media, one primary and one secondary. These projects could take any form that the students deemed relevant, be it a website, editions, posters, a video sequence or virtual reality. The SDGs are meant to be achieved globally by all United Nations member states by 2030. This entails all states equally playing their part in seeking common solutions to the world s urgent challenges. Switzerland is also obligated to implement these goals at the national level. Furthermore, incentives must be created to encourage non-governmental actors to increasingly contribute to sustainable development. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), along with their 169 targets, constitute the core of the Agenda 2030. They integrate the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development and, for the first time, place poverty eradication and sustainable development on the same agenda. 2030 IS NOT FAR AWAY Edition Our docu-fiction takes the form of a black box. As major institutions and the UN admit their failure to achieve the SDGs, it records government activities in the year 2030 through the lens of global energy degradation. Amidst reports and official documents, Ravi Mehta, an energy researcher commissioned by the UN, infiltrates the system logs and reveals what is truly happening behind the scenes of a world on the brink. He exposes the deceptive efforts of states and paints a portrait of a polarized world, where the pursuit of profit makes sustainable development impossible. In 2030, he travels the globe, closely following several projects that promise sustainable energy alternatives. However, government pressure hinders him and his colleagues from properly implementing the program. As the story unfolds, the reader witnesses the worsening situation and becomes aware of the deep interconnection between the SDGs—until the end of the year, when humanity is ultimately condemned by its past inaction. By , & Lasting parcel Edition & Website The project takes the form of a newsletter, delivered like a package in a mailbox. Inside the box, beneath its packaging, the recipient finds an informative edition focused on a specific SDG, featuring text sourced from the official SDG website, along with four postcards containing QR codes. When scanned, each card leads to a website offering a rich, immersive visual interpretation of the newsletter s theme. The user can navigate through various types of content—graphic boards, videos, sounds, and images—allowing for a non-linear exploration of the edition. Visitors can also access an index, presented as an interactive map, which brings together past and future newsletters of the project. Each edition can be viewed or ordered directly from the platform. There are four newsletters in total—four packages—each containing the same set of media formats. By , & SDG QUEST Video game Our video game offers an interactive experience designed to raise awareness and explain the environmental and social challenges of the SDGs to younger audiences, using a language and format that resonates with them. Players take on the role of a child transforming a grey, polluted world through their actions and interactions with local inhabitants. The goal is to inspire young people and children to take real-world action by showing them that even small gestures can have a big impact. We provide an educational and engaging game that combines entertainment with awareness, empowering the next generation to make a difference. By , & LET S ACT NOW Website An immersive mobile website designed to raise awareness and inspire action around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Let s Act Now presents a series of mobile-first websites, each crafted as an interactive one-page experience dedicated to a specific SDG. Through striking visuals, impactful videos, and 3D animations, each page delves into the global challenges shaping our future. Visitors are immersed in a rich experience where every visual element—from thought-provoking images to animated sequences—is designed to spark curiosity, encourage reflection, and drive engagement. This project aims to make the SDGs accessible, impactful, and engaging, mobilizing a broad audience around the world s most urgent challenges. With Let s Act Now, the mission is clear: turn awareness into concrete action. By , , & Mon monde parfait Edition How do children envision the future? We interviewed 60 children aged 4 to 11, all attending school in Switzerland, to gather their visions of an ideal world. These conversations, centered around the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), allowed us to dive into their imaginations and discover their ideas for a better future. Our project invites these young minds to imagine a utopian world aligned with the SDGs, while also proposing solutions to improve today s reality. The children s ideas were then transformed into creative, colorful visuals that illustrate their unique visions of a perfect future. The publication brings together these in-depth interviews along with the illustrations. A second layer of reading is offered through augmented reality: by scanning selected pages, readers can access more alarming data on today s environmental and social challenges—creating a striking contrast with the children s imagined utopia. This project highlights the richness of children s perspectives and their potential to inspire meaningful reflection on a sustainable future. By , , & Getting Involved Edition & Posters The project consists of three editions, each focused on a specific Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). These editions combine protest slogans with visual symbols that embody their messages. They share a common core derived from the “Getting Involved” chapter of Amnesty International s Sustainable Development Goals text, which offers guidance on how to engage in the fight for the SDGs. Each edition also includes a section dedicated to its respective SDG, featuring detachable and fold-out pages that can be transformed into protest signs. These pages are based on the goals outlined in the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on September 25, 2015. The editions are modular, allowing pages to be interchanged across editions to vary and customize the slogans. By , &

ECAL at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka HUG: ECAL s Swiss chair for the World Expo 2025 in Osaka from 13 April to 13 October 2025. For the Swiss Pavilion at the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, innovation meets tradition in HUG, the chair designed by Jacob Kouthoofd Martensson and Min Xiyao, ECAL Master Product Design Master students. Selected from ten original proposals, HUG stands out for its enveloping shape, evoking an embrace, and its ability to be stacked in reverse - a choice that is both functional and poetic. Designed specifically for this global event, HUG reflects the values of the Swiss Pavilion: sustainability, intelligent design and intercultural dialogue. Produced in 60 units by Karimoku, a Japanese furniture manufacturer renowned for its high standards of craftsmanship and commitment to quality wood, the HUG chair, which will be on display in the Pavilion restaurant, embodies Swiss hospitality in an architectural setting designed by Manuel Herz. This partnership illustrates a wonderful meeting of two design cultures: Swiss rigour and Japanese finesse. karimoku-newstandard.jp houseofswitzerland.org
