SELF-INITIATED PROJECT - Automn 2024 - MAP2 This module assists the students to develop into a finalized work a project that further expands their interests and research. The module gives the opportunity to take some of the ideas, skills and themes explores in the first semester and make into a brand new work that can take any possible form: a book, an installation, an online project, a performance.

ECAL x AREA OF WORK - CO-EXISTENCE ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has teamed up with Paris-based studio Area of Work at Paris Photo to present CO-EXISTENCE, a monumental immersive installation in the heart of Paris s 11th arrondissement, from 7 to 9 November 2024. In a large metropolis, a small, seemingly empty apartment reveals discreet traces of human presence. On another scale, a conquering population manifests itself. Wings flap, slime trails, antennae shivers... In the industrial setting of the former Garage République in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, CO-EXISTENCE showcases a living cohabitation through a sequence of artificial images created using Computer Generated Imagery (CGI). These spectacular yet intimate photo-realistic projections highlight the imperceptible, the infra- thin, and the invisible, blurring the scales between micro and macro. Developed during three series of workshops conducted from 2023 to autumn 2024 by Area of Work, CO- EXISTENCE bears witness to the technical and artistic skills that are honed within the ECAL MA Photography. These workshops enabled students to transpose their photographic skills into the virtual space of 3D graphics to understand the temporal, artistic, and commercial issues involved in creating CGI. ‘This collaboration offered ECAL students an introduction to the tools and possibilities of 3D graphics, exploring their integration into the processes of creating photorealistic and hyper-realistic images, while highlighting the importance of the artistic and cinematographic dimensions that are at the heart of our identity. – Amine Ghorab & Scott Renau, Area of Work, Paris. Founded in Paris in 2018 by artists and directors Amine Ghorab and Scott Renau, Area of Work is known for its distinctive contemporary visual narratives, blending graphic framing and rigorous photographic direction. Specialising in fashion, luxury, and technology, the creative studio has become a major player in contemporary visual storytelling..

ECAL × JEAN PAUL GAULTIER: SPORT - CORPS SPORT - CORPS : Jeux Olympiques et Paralympiques The project is based on the theme of the body, with a view to staging physical effort. The recent context of the Olympic and Paralympic Games logically frames the choice of sport as an aesthetic means of highlighting different forms of bodily expression. The choice of discipline could be classic, out-of-games or even imaginary. The students worked around a certain vision of physical effort, movement, constraint, a form of discipline, or even joy.

Self-Initiated Project - Fall 2024 - MAP1 The course is a platform for the development of personal projects that arise from the desire and curiosity of each student. The basic concept of the work must be relevant to the field of contemporary photographic images. Each project can take a different form depending on the specificities, contents and inclinations of each participant. From books to multimedia installations, from performance to CGI, group discussions will articulate a plural vision of photography s applications today.

Photobook - Fall 2024 The photobook module introduces students to the history of photobooks and artists books and leads them to consider different strategies and approaches to contemporary book-making. In the first term students individually conceptualised a publication that have been designed, printed and distributed.

ECAL at Festival Images Vevey,07–29.09.2024,Vevey From September 7 to 29, graduates of ECAL s Bachelor and Master of Photography programs present their work at the Festival Images Vevey. VENUEVeveyDATES & SCHEDULEFrom September 7 to 29, 2024WEBSITEimages.chFrom September 7 to 29, 2024, photography in all its forms takes over the streets of Vevey, invades the parks and strolls along the shores of the lake. For three weeks, the Festival Images Vevey transforms the small town on the Riviera and welcomes a wide audience. This year, four ECAL graduates are part of the program. Positive Illusions Diploma project by , Master Photography graduate With this project , Benjamin Freedman is reconstructing his childhood memories using CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). The artist diverts this technology, mostly used in films and video games, which requires close involvement in the creation of every object, detail and lighting. Freedman meticulously reconstructs a family roadtrip between Montreal and Maine in the United States in 1999, reproducing his point of view at the age of nine. Created for the Boéland site near the Swiss Museum of Games, the installation explores how memory shapes, transforms and simulates reality. Positive Illusions plunges nostalgically into the joyous world of childhood, fragmented by memory and reassembled by technology. Cash Me Online Diploma project by , Master Photography graduate Cash Me Online is a satirical project combining photography, performance and social media footage. Amandine Kuhlmann creates a hyper-feminine alter ego that she embodies online and during performances to achieve viral fame. She exaggerates her poses, imitates TikTok and Instagram trends and dramatizes her everyday life to make herself noticed. The artist reappropriates videos, drawing on the suggestions of her algorithm and the female stereotypes portrayed by social networks. These caricatured images reveal the ambiguities of virtual profiles, between the objectification of the body and the desire for individuality. Questioning the impact of social media and the monetisation of the self, the installation presents a reflection to a generation obsessed with their physical and digital appearance. One Last Journey , Master Photography graduate One Last Journey addresses artificial intelligence and the instant photographic process through the telling of a fictional love story. Attempting to imitate the aesthetics of the Polaroid camera, Alexey Chernikov writes short descriptions of a couple s last journey before separation on the Midjourney image-generating software. These images are then reproduced on a traditional Polaroid camera using a new printing device developed by the same company. Interested in the emotional potential of AI, the artist questions the reliability of the photographic medium. From one image to the next, the pair appears different each time, confusing the sense of reality. Using the Polaroid as definitive proof of authenticity, the project invites us to reconsider the photographic snapshot in light of AI. Get the Look! , Bachelor Photography graduate What would happen if we let algorithms dress us? This is the question Romain Mader asked himself when he founded Get the Look! He set himself a challenge: to follow the recommendations of his smartphone s algorithm and order clothes from online stores as suggested, without making any personal choices. Since the algorithm is influenced by his and his partner s browsing activity, the result would be expected to match their style and personality. In his studio, the artist adopts a number of incongruous postures. By examining the sales techniques and marketing tools used by fast-fashion websites to encourage consumption, the series ironically denounces industryinduced addiction. Through the example of fashion, Mader universally reveals the influence of algorithms on our lives.

Francis Baudevin receives the Leenaards Foundation Cultural Prize 2024 Congratulations to Francis Baudevin, professor at ECAL, who has been awarded the Prix Leenaards 2024, and to Anna-Marija Adomaitytė and Anjesa Dellova, graduates of the ECAL s Bachelor and Master Fine Arts respectively, who have won one of the Cultural Grants. ECAL is proud to announce that Francis Baudevin, professor in the ECAL Bachelor Fine Arts program since 1996, has been awarded the prestigious Leenaards Cultural Prize 2024. The prize, endowed with 30,000 francs, recognizes his entire artistic career, marked by a constant reinvention of geometric abstraction and his commitment to passing on his knowledge to younger generations of artists. Francis Baudevin is an emblematic figure of the neo-geo artistic movement, a postmodern current that revisits geometric abstraction with a contemporary twist. His work is characterized by a subtle, thoughtful use of motifs from advertising packaging and symbols of consumer society. Francis Baudevin, who is also passionate about music, does not hesitate to play with the boundaries between artistic disciplines, an approach that has earned him international recognition. The Leenaards Cultural Prize 2024 will be awarded on September 8 at the Comédie de Genève. At this ceremony, the ECAL will also be honoured by the distinction awarded to Anna-Marija Adomaitytė, who will graduate from the Master Fine Arts in 2021, and Anjesa Dellova , who will graduate from the Bachelor Fine Arts in 2017, and who will receive one of eight cultural grants from the Leenaards Foundation. These awards not only recognize outstanding individual achievements, but also reinforce ECAL s reputation as a benchmark institution in the fine arts. @annamarijaadomaityte anjesadellova.com @anjesadellova leenaards.ch

Emma Grosu – ESC Video games allow players to escape into narrative worlds where they hold ‘all the power. In ESC, the game s character seeks to escape his own reality. This reversal examines the notions of freedom and constraint in video games, ironically highlighting the limits of our existence. What would happen if a character became aware of their situation, realizing that they are not in control of their movements but are, instead, imprisoned by them? ESC allowed me to explore concepts of immersion such as breaking the fourth wall and mise en abyme. Inspired by works like ‘The Truman Show and ‘Sword Art Online, I illustrated how the perception of freedom can be an illusion, both in video games and in the physical world.

Léo Paschoud – How to sell online This work takes the form of a series of three books compiling images from conversations collected on various online second-hand sales sites. A specific protocol defines the message sent to the sellers to obtain a photo in return. Each book focuses on a specific object: the camera, the mirror, and the laptop webcam. The aim of this project is to explore the behavior of online sellers. To obtain the desired image, with the correct shooting angle, the process relies on their desire to sell these objects and allows for the observation of their different reactions. If the protocol is successful, images are received; otherwise, responses of indignation, annoyance, insults, or even silence are encountered.

Rebecca Alfandary – Disparitions Everything is fated to disappear. This non-exhaustive collection explores the plurality of the manifestations and forms of impermanence, its impacts, its causes, as well as its different timescales. Great and little stories inhabit the same space, and make information and interpretation come together. Text and images, both linked and independent of each other, illustrate each subject and create a dialogue. Throughout the book, a series of interludes give it a more sensible dimension, by referring to our relationship with the ephemeral. The whole is both a testimony and a tribute to what is disappearing, what has disappeared, what will disappear.

Valentin Bonzon – Sueños entre paginas, les rêves entre les pages Inspired by Gabriel García Márquez s Nobel Prize speech, I went to Bogotá to document a journey exploring the power of reading and writing in a city marked by violence and corruption. The project compiles initiatives promoting reading and writing, highlighting the importance of literature in Colombia. The main chapters address various topics, such as writing workshops for youth affected by armed conflicts or the extensive system of public libraries. Interspersed between these chapters are historical fragments providing context. Finally, poems printed on handmade papers and inserts from second-hand books found in Bogotá structure the work, giving it a unique form.

Edizioni Arche Edizioni Arche unites the idea of inclusion under the umbrella of a publishing house that has as its founding pillars ‘always act in such a way as to maximise the number of possibilities , a quote from the philosopher Von Foester, which we try to apply in our diploma. The importance of enabling fluent reading and understanding is a primordial concept: everyone should have the right to read and understand. Graphic design conveys this possibility. Arche researches and explores accessible editorial responses to all cases, from comprehension difficulties, motor problems, visual impairments or the simple desire to empathise with others. No less important, books aimed at a wider audience are not excluded: they raise the necessary awareness of sometimes underestimated problems.

Alexandra Cupsa – Piedica în calea uitarii 1 Iunie is one of the last abandoned industrial factories in Timișoara that has not yet been demolished. Its demolition is imminent, and its existence might be forgotten. Piedică în Calea Uitării means "An Obstacle to Forgetting" in Romanian and marks the intention of this project. To prevent the factory from being forgotten, and to create a new space within the pages of the book to preserve fragments of 1 Iunie s life. This is not only a visual journey but also an auditory journey accompanied by a vinyl record. Each episode of the factory s life is introduced through a song from the same period. Beyond 1 Iunie, the project also focuses on the issues of preserving the industrial heritage of the city of Timișoara.

L inventaire To make an exhibition catalogue, there are Camille and Chloé, but also all the other hands, and everything that fits between the ends to enter the space of the book, like entering a house with a reading key. L inventaire is an exhibition catalogue that tells its own story, and that happened in accordance with its own chronology. It invites you to take a closer look at the prologue, which describes the research process, to wander through its heart, which was printed during the opening, with a system of retranscription and live printing, and to thank you in the epilogue, which reverently marks the end of its production. In this way, the book becomes an exhibition space, then returns to its original form.

Lisa Grobet – Villa Trudy Listening to the walls, perceiving the imprints they bear, remembering the ghosts of the past. Villa Trudy, in Sardinia, is a house marked by the passage of many lives. A father teaching his son to swim, this son becoming a father in turn. The walls bear witness to the changes and traces left by our ancestors. They observe the events that unfold within the house, but remain passive. In a way, they are the guardians of the place, witnesses of an invisible absence. Through sensitive intervention on the remnants of the place, this book aspires to become, in turn, the guardian of memories that would otherwise no longer be tangible, offering a new form of transmission. This project pays tribute to the soul of Villa Trudy by preserving its heritage.

Simon Maurer – Riposta FC Football is the most popular and publicized sport in the world, which gives it the opportunity to be more than just a game. Thanks in part to its popularity, it is used as a promotional medium, a forum, a means of communication. Both by players, fans, institutions, politicians etc. Riposta FC aims to question the place of football in society, its social role and how it could be used differently to serve other purposes than those already existing. The jerseys are second-hand garments with thermo-glued designs inspired and remixed visuals inherent in the world of football with the aim of creating a new interaction.

Delphine Moënnat – Le Soleil a dit qu il reviendrait There are places where the sun promises to return, where its rays glide over faces marked by the trials of life. Le Radeau is one of those places. Le Soleil a dit qu il reviendrait invites us to enter, to listen to the rustle of whispers, to observe the discreet gestures that tell stories — their stories. This book explores the lives of those who inhabit this place, through intimate conversations; the border between their world and ours is almost imperceptible. We slip in quietly, as if entering a dream, and realize that these people are not strangers. They could be our brothers, our sisters, our children, or our friends. It is a book that speaks to our hearts, inviting us to reach out, to listen, and to understand.

Océane Pasteur – Rendez-vous Anchors are fundamental elements in the construction of identity, so Rendez-vous is one of them. There is origin and nationality, and this year I had a rendezvous with both. Although they are very different, they both make up my identity. Twenty-three years ago I was called Dang Thuy Thu Hang, twenty-two years ago I was called Océane Thu Hang Pasteur. Rendez-vous is about a journey, mine and theirs. To do this, I decided to set out to find my origins and, at the same time, retrace the paths taken by my parents. By reconstructing the key elements of this union, through archives and time, I sought to understand and weave the links between these multiple heritages.

Luca Riva – Attitude as Tool – The graphic language of context Attitude as Tool is a research project on the practice of graphic design through the use of context. The project develops into a book that proposes a working method that invites designers to work in unconventional contexts, integrating them into their professional practice and using these contexts to develop tools, ideas and processes. Derived from a way of observing the world related to the concept of "Adhocism" and encouraging self-production, unlikely combinations of what is at hand, common or unusual materials are integrated into the creation process. Mistakes, unintentional and situational gestures shape unexpected results.

Elsa Trummer – Tournerie My work is about the swiss agriculture, a sector facing many challenges, including a decreasing number of farmers. I have chosen to communicate about agriculture through an educational game, in which players embody farmers working together on a farm. This game emphasizes collaborative spirit, which I consider crucial for our future, while also raising awareness about agriculture and sparking players interest in it. The objective is to achieve sustainable agricultural development by accumulating points and answering questions to acquire knowledge. My game aims to valorize agriculture by offering a positive alternative and reconnecting the population with the world of agriculture.

Léa Bevilacqua – Meu Anjo "I had the occasion to go back to Santarém, in northern Brazil, my origin town to discuss beauty standards, identity, and self-expression with eight individuals I met there. Growing up as a bi-national woman (Swiss and Brazilian), I struggled with conflicting beauty ideals. The people I met there were often seen as weird, ugly, or inadequate by the society, I thought they were unique and brave for standing out in a region that prize conformity over self-expression. These encounters allowed us to share experiences and, on a more political note, emphasize their value in response to the recent rising hate against minorities in Brazil."

Lorane Hochstätter – 24 This book explores the complexity of the development of a girl s feminine identity through the education and gaze of her mother, the first and most powerful model of femininity. My mother, former model, seemed to emerge from a magazine cover: the embodiment of overwhelming norms of feminine representation. Our image develops in a mirror: she projects herself onto me, remembering what she was and inspecting what she no longer is; I project myself onto her, seeing what I would like to be but what I am not. These self-portraits twist and disguise my body, caught between emancipation and subordination to imposed codes. This book deals with the love-rejection relationship between a mother and her daughter, who accompany and evolve together in a never-ending quest: the search for a feminine identity.

Anna von Allmen – Nos vies sur vos murs Nos vies sur vos murs (Our lives on your walls) grew out of a collaboration with fourteen young people from the Pierre-à-Bot neighbourhood in the heights of Neuchâtel. Over a six-month period, I organised workshops with young people aged between seven and twelve, which formed the basis of this experiment. During our meetings, I initiated discussions around the theme of love, a feeling that is often so complex to grasp. I shared moments of their lives with them, collected their texts and asked them to use disposable cameras to draw pictures of love. In this book, our visions come together to create a portrait of the neighbourhood and the imaginary worlds that develop there.

Antoine Woeffray – I Unfold My Skin In The Morning Antoine_Woeffray: Hi readers! Antoine_Woeffray: I m Antoine_Woeffray Antoine_Woeffray: But they also call me mr_paramount mr_paramount: Hi readers! mr_paramount: I m mr_paramount mr_paramount: But my friends call me Antoine mr_paramount: My doctor call me also Antoine_Woeffray mr_paramount: Actually on my ID card the name written is Antoine_Woeffray mr_paramount: But my online lovers call me mr_paramount This project, which takes the form of a book, is an investigation into the representation of the male body and what it means to be a man. A digital construction of a physical being. The body passes through the image before being transformed.

Seline Symons – Groot geel object Inspired by everyday, banal forms, I revisit our world to create new combinations. A game of childlike wonder. There is room for play, imagination and personal interpretation.

Isaïa Delaplace – Azimut Azimut is a puzzle game set in a 3D natural environment. The aim is to solve a series of riddles linked to the position of the sun in the sky. Inspired by the theme of Jun ichiro Tanizaki s book “In Praise of Shadows”, controlling the sun becomes the central element of the gameplay. This action allows players to simply interact with the light that illuminates the Earth, solving puzzles and progressing through the experience. Through this series of increasingly complex puzzles, we can observe and feel the beauty of light and shadow in an increasingly vivid and rich environment.

Sasha Iatsenia – LittleCubes Today, 1 in 15 children are affected by a disorder that alters their behaviors, impacting their educational, socialization, and communication skills. LittleCubes were designed as therapeutic toys to help develop these skills through light and play. Using a cube that lights up and responds to natural gestures, therapists can create fun and engaging exercises using an intuitive app. While designing this project, I discovered that I have autistic traits, inspiring me to build a toy I would have loved as a child. My goal is to build bridges between neurotypical and neurodiverse experiences, making the world more inclusive for all. To date, I have tested the cube with more than 15 therapists and 30 children (ASD, motor deficiencies and associated disorders). I hope to continue this project after my diploma. This project is supported by Fondation Dr Combe.

Jérémie Kursner – iLand Universe iLand Universe is a project focused on the world of amusement parks where every activity is an allusion to the digital world, whether through its architecture, its scenography, or its references to the overuse of smartphones. Through an "epic" teaser, this project adopts the promotional codes of a traditional amusement park, using video as the main communication tool while playing with the "inspiring" codes of this industry from the United States. The desire to create this fantastic world stems from my passion for this universe, as well as my interest in metaphorizing digital visions into tangible concepts, thus creating mind games that continuously question the digital society in which we live.

Marius Parisod – Get-Out 4 At the crossroads between video games and board games, Get-Out 4 is an invitation to rediscover the joy of playing together. This puzzle game, designed to be played by two or more players, encourages direct interaction and cooperation. The use of external game pieces invites players to rely on their observation and deduction skills, bringing them together in a shared experience that goes beyond screens. The design of Get-Out 4 is based on a minimalist aesthetic inspired by early video games such as Pong, Pac-Man, and Tetris. This visual simplicity not only evokes nostalgia but is strategically employed to enhance player engagement by focusing on gameplay mechanics. This project, beyond its playful aspect, offers human interaction through the lens of gaming.

Alejandrina Hernandez – Stimuli Stimuli, a mini robot for children s education, is the result of a collaboration with the Mobots Lab at EPFL which created Thymio. As a robotic assistant, Stimuli explores new alternatives to support the learning process of children, by fostering knowledge development and sensory stimulation. This innovative tool cultivates creativity and sensitivity, improving cognitive, motor, emotional, and social development by balancing digital and manual experiences. Through sound and movement generated by vibration, children can explore and understand material properties, enriching their growth. As Charles Eames said, "the best preparation is a general education" that fosters sensitivity to life s forces. Stimuli embodies this principle, offering a holistic educational experience.

Minna Holenweg – RideBy RideBy is a child seat that is designed to attach to a standard shopping cart, making grocery shopping easier for both, parents and children. It provides a designated place for children, allowing them to move freely while staying secure. Made from metal with plastic components, just like the shopping cart, RideBy attaches with a single screw. To save space, RideBy features a flexible joint that allows the seat to fold when the carts are nested together. The fixed footrest prevents scratches on the cart, and the handle alongside the cart s basket, additionaly protects the child from bumping their head. Thanks to RideBy, shopping becomes a participative and dynamic experience, engaging both the child and the parents.

Angèle Challier Fontaine – My eyes ache to clos My eyes ache to close is an installation that questions the dynamic between public space and the invisible traditions of the private sphere. The notion of “care” is symbolized by the time and attention invested in the meticulous wrapping of thread around each structure. The work is composed of six objects extracted from the urban environment, each of these elements, typically encountered in the street, is reimagined through repetitive gestures. The abstraction of use of the six selected objects reveals their aesthetic aspect and intrinsic similarities. Stripped of their original function, they become enigmatic sculptures, suspended between their utilitarian past and their new identity.

Sherif Sherif – Lines to See and Not to Cross My diploma project is an installation consisting of two sculptures and a video that explores physical, psychological, and societal boundaries through imaginative narratives. Lines to See and Not to Cross is a sculpture with three arrows connected to a sphere, projecting laser lines that create illusory, yet crossable boundaries, addressing psychological limits and power structures. "Hand Games" is a 3-minute video on a loop projected on a screen made of plexiglass, a red gel light filter, and tracing paper. The video explores physical boundaries through children s games. "Forbidden Fruit" is a 3D-printed sculpture of two power sockets locked with padlocks, preventing access to the power source.

Tanguy Morvan – We All Walk On Empty Staircases We All Walk On Empty Staircases reflects the deep scars of the artist s childhood traumas. Growing up in a violent and tormented environment left permanent marks on his mind. At the age of seven, he found refuge in the game World of Warcraft, where he immersed himself for sixteen years, creating an idealized version of himself. In recent years, his grandfather introduced him to the Masonic world, which deepened his fascination with rituals. For the past six months, he has been transforming his body through tattooing, a process that has allowed him to regain control over both his mind and body while staying connected to past memories. His project invites reflection on the impact of domestic violence and the healing power of rituals.

Nina Pacherová – We Won t Tell Daddy! We Won t Tell Daddy! takes a speculative look at the impact of sharenting - the phenomenon whereby parents excessively share their children s lives on social networks. In the form of a video installation, it explores the future consequences of the digital footprint that parents create for their children. It focuses on the TikTok #bathroomchallenge, where children are recorded cursing, and unaware of the future implications, their video is shared online. The project uses AI and deepfake technology to protect children s identities by replacing their faces with that of the author and highlights the abuse of content. At the same time, it encourages us to redefine the role of technology in our lives by using deepfake as a protective tool.

Amélie Tricaud – Elle rêvait des loups This work illustrates an attraction to the masculine, a deep desire to be embodied in a different body, assumed to be my opposite. This obsession, built through the accumulation of male images, shows what I covet, what I wish to carry within myself, without being able to access it. Throughout the 250 pages of the book, I question my gaze and my notion of beauty by idealizing these bodies, objectifying them, or reducing them to abstraction, attempting to subvert gendered and stereotypical ideals of femininity and masculinity. It is a reflection on the idea of the muse, reversing the power dynamics between the female muse and the male artist, and a mirror on the vast existing corpus representing female figures, on how their bodies are always depicted, scrutinized, fragmented, and contorted.

Sacha Dufour – Conversation artificielle Artificial Conversation is a fluid language - an exploration of liquid forms as they interact with the body. This work merges human and technology to propose a new process for creating jewelry. Using photography combined with artificial intelligence, I compose images destined to become jewelry. Experimenting with different techniques, crossing, and superimposing them until an idea is reached. I search for the form that embodies the liquid, sculpting artificial images in the same way I compose photographs. It s a game between a body, a liquid and an intelligence that needs to be guided.

Raazia Hasnain – Shiro Shiro is a project delving into a research of the haptic qualities of a seemingly ubiquitous material: paper. An exploratory journey led to the discovery of a unique surface of Japanese origin. Holding transformative characteristics under a heat source, the magical reveal of the translucency of this paper led to the origin of Shiro. A methodical process paved the road to unique discoveries. A two dimensional surface became the canvas for 3dimensional expression, quickly lending itself to become an artisanal medium by means of special heat application tools especially designed to carve unique textures into the surface. Thus began a delicate dialogue between the paper and the person, giving birth to a boundless world of sensory perception.

Kao Onishi – PNEUMA PNEUMA is a material research project that explores the possibilities of Nitinol to design movement into static objects. The term Pneuma originates from ancient Greek and means breath or air in motion , symbolizing the breath of life that animates living beings. Nitinol is a shape memory alloy that can remember two shapes and transform back and forth by heating and cooling. This project uses light and heat from candles to trigger the movement, highlighting the material s potential without the use of electricity. PNEUMA is a collection of candle lamps that transforms the typical candle experience into something more dynamic, playful, and poetic. Starting from an unassuming cylindrical form, the vessels explore three movements to emit light: unraveling, blossoming, and expanding.

Antonio Severi – VAC (Vacuum Assembled Composites) VAC focuses on assembling objects without conventional fasteners, using vacuum as a binder. This technique, known as «jamming,» originates from soft robotics but also occurs when vacuum-sealing goods like coffee. It increases friction between parts like glue but allows the process to be reversible. Various bags were filled with different materials, creating unique seating options that address technical challenges and explore material combinations. The project produced five chair prototypes using different methods, showcasing binding techniques that allow for easy separation and recycling, highlighting a commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Hólmfríður Benediktsdóttir – KRULLA.SANS What is the difference between a curl, a swirl and a whirl? What about a whirl and a whorl? What about a swash, a flourish, a spiral, a twist and a twirl? Using the curl as an experiment in expression and disobedience in text, KRULLA.SANS is a sans serif typeface that comes in three weights with corresponding curls. Inspired by the original drawing of Antique No. 8 by Miller and Richard, KRULLA is an endeless exploration of contemporary curls taken to a curly extreme. With its condensed proportions and unexpected curves throughout the styles, KRULLA evolves from a Bold Confused and arrives at a disobedient Crazy Light that reimagines the relationship between curve, curl, spiral, twist and a twirl. Can a curly letter be repurposed and shown as a tool to signify resistance and disobedience?

Anna-Sophia Pohlmann – Eternity From Rational to Functional: Eternity is a family of six styles inspired by the French typeface Romain du Roi in 1694. Its creation is one of the first examples of rational type design. Philippe Grandjean, who cut the punches for the metal type, took many liberties to moderate the original letterforms. Eternity raises the question of what makes a functional typeface contemporary. What criteria are important for a typeface to be usable in different contexts? The finished typeface continues to use characteristic elements of Romain du Roi and Philippe Grandjean, but questions the functionality of the typeface by breaking with mathematical and analytical principles. Eternity collects and creates the ideal parameters for each font style, applied on an axis between rational and function.

VAUD-O-RAMA – JEUX OLYMPIQUES PARIS 2024 As part of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the canton of Vaud has commissioned ECAL to create an original work of art, on view from July 24 to September 8 in the Maison suisse set up for the occasion in the courtyard of the Swiss Embassy in Paris. GRAPHIC ANIMATION & COORDINATIONSCENOGRAPHYTECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTHEAD OF PROJECTVISUAL RESEARCH, , , , & Comprising some twenty synchronized screens offering a panoramic view of the canton and its major assets, Vaud-o-rama aims to promote the region and forge links with the public, helping them to discover its richness and diversity. Inspired by the diorama museal device, this installation offers a dynamic and immersive showcase for the canton of Vaud, highlighting four key areas: Innovation, Education, Culture and Sport. It presents a varied portrait of the canton and offers a current view of its activities. In this way, the canton of Vaud reveals itself as a center of excellence for research and innovation, a cutting-edge learning ground, a mecca for cultural creation and a sports ecosystem that is unique in the world. Images and text come alive and intermingle in a meticulously orchestrated choreography. International sporting events, the headquarters of major federations, prestigious cultural institutions, renowned universities and colleges, top-level scientific and technical research centers - these are the strengths that the canton brings to the stage and into the spotlight in this creation. Initiated during an experimental workshop with students to generate initial graphic intentions, the project was then developed within ECAL s Visual Communication department in collaboration with ECAL s Technology Center.

Collector During the visual identity course with Adeline Mollard, the students had to develop an identity project promoting a collection chosen by them. Each project includes the design of a catalogue contextualising and presenting the collection, together with the design of a poster. LUEURS "Lueurs" is a collection of jewels, narrated by family photos and texts recalling the history of these jewels. In my family, whether maternal or paternal, there is an overwhelming majority of women. Growing up, I saw them all wearing jewelry to which they seemed attached in a way that could not be attributed to their materiality alone. These jewels, by the way they have been given or handed down, carry stories. The stories they embody, though I find it hard to remember what role each character plays, give me a fragmented image of my family s history. By Simon Cossyalmanacco 2025 This identity seeks to retranscribe ancient, vernacular and ornamental codes through a contemporary approach. In the form of a calendar, this edition uses ascii-art to rediscover almanac aesthetics lost through the ages. By Alice Gilliozgaz(e) This project brings together a collection of perfume bottles, presented through an identity that questions fashion codes through censorship and various visual creation techniques. By Siméon Dubuisfrom a to b "From a to b" is a visual identity project based on a collection of transport tickets from different countries. It reinterprets their visual codes to recreate atmospheres, a graphic line presented in the form of an edition. By Léa Verboux72 flyers "72 Flyers" is a collection of leaflets assembled over several years. The project seeks to deconstruct these printed materials through their format, colors, composition and texts. All have been analyzed and classified in the form of an edition. By 6962 viganello This family heritage of postcards with Ticino as its departure and destination comes together through this visual identity. In book form, this collection immerses readers in a visual and textual archive, testimony to short-distance exchanges. By Carolina Crivelli

TRANSLATION During the visual identity course, the 2nd year Graphic Design bachelors had to produce a communication project based on a translation. They had to define their own translation system and develop a visual language based on these rules. Mires Through my research into test patterns, my aim was to design and use test patterns that were truncated, whether by the printing technique or by their very design. These test patterns are intentionally designed to be altered and used in a way that reverses their original calibration function. By calibrating the camera with these test patterns, the resulting image suffers all the errors and imperfections induced. This research explores how calibration errors affect image quality, by manipulating parameters such as blur, overexposure and optical distortion.etic potential of technical errors in photography. Par BAD NOISE CLUB This project is a visual identity proposal for a fictitious electronic music club, inspired by the world of rave parties, techno clubs and the influence of the Roland TR-303 on this musical genre from the 90s to the present day. The visuals are the result of experimentation and research into the machine s technical characteristics. They translate live the modulation of sound and the way the instrument is used using VJing techniques. Par PIMP MY HOOK Fly fishing is a fishing method that uses lures made to imitate aquatic and terrestrial insects. Using 3D, "PIMP MY HOOK" reproduces the translation phenomenon between the real insect and its imitation on a hook, just as an artificial fly tyer would do. Par Sounds of Things "Sounds of Things" is a visual identity that translates sound into images. It takes the form of an alphabet book in which the sound of each object creates an infographic form. In this way, a whole visual lexicon is created, moving from one sense (hearing) to another (vision). Par CORPS ET ÂMEA mixture of empirical data and concrete poetry, CORPS ET ÂMES translates my state of mind when I improvise in dance. From an internal point of view, this project illustrates the four criteria I use in my practice: speed, amplitude, height and intensity, as well as the thoughts that go through my head. A video illustrates the creative process, itself condensed into two posters featuring my personal video archives and the more abstract aspect of my movements. The project is accompanied by a pack of cards for dancers who enjoy improvisation and challenges. Par Vallée du GottéronThis is the story of a river that runs aground at the foot of a town. This wild river has always fascinated the people of Fribourg, but it has also frightened them. Mixing reality and fiction, this project is a work of research into the translation of a place and its legends. Par

So, how can we live better? Beyond questions of functionality, comfort and individual or collective well-being, the built environment is capable of responding in a stimulating way to societal, energy and environmental challenges. Workplaces, homes, public spaces, interiors and streets are all driven by real statements of intent that motivate their design. The 2nd year Graphic Design students worked on a communication based on one of these principles (or others) and on the architectural creation that refers to it in order to promote it. Ailleurs Ici Édition Ailleurs Ici is the story of 132 route de la Fruitière. During their retirement, the two former teachers René and Anne-Marie Favre explored the world. Their travels are above all encounters, the interests of enthusiasts. A history book of faraway lands for René, and a fantastic but tangible herbarium for Annie. But when they return from these expeditions, it s their house that changes. As if undergoing a second metamorphosis. The old renovated barn at 132 Route de la Fruitière has been given a final chrysalis. The walls are filled with colourful objects and prints of exotic negatives. The stones here are filled with prints from elsewhere. Without intending to, René and Annie have turned 132 Route la Fruitière into a museum inhabited by its curators. Elsewhere Here is their catalogue, retracing each of René and Annie s journeys through objects as mystical as they are foreign. Par LEs vieux Blocs Édition Les vieux blocs traces the history of a group of buildings in the Marolles district of Brussels. Emblematic of Art Nouveau architecture, it now represents a meeting point between a social building and an architectural one. This project invites us to explore this controversial dynamic by bringing together the tourist side and the social side in the same architecture, with a testimonial from a neighbour and images of tourists strolling through the district. Par Terrain Gurzelen Édition It s important, even temporarily, to create parentheses in society, bubbles of utopia that can burst at any moment. The energy that emanates from these ephemeral moments is unique. Gurz is a sensory stroll that hijacks, appropriates and translates the materiality of the Terrain de la Gurzelen, a football pitch temporarily occupied by the residents of the city of Biel. The aim is to leave a trace of the life of this surreal place, which will soon disappear. Par 14 21 Vidéo This simulation shows the duality between the inflows and the threats posed by the Grande Dixence dam to the population of the valleys below. It traces the hypothetical course of water from the dam to the town of Sierre. Par CITY STADIUM LEAGUE Édition The city stadium is a multi-purpose urban facility designed for sporting activities and an ideal meeting place for local residents, reinforcing social cohesion. CITY STADIUM LEAGUE, halfway between the famous vignette collection albums and reportage, is an immersive object retracing an amateur football tournament held on 7 and 8 May 2024 in Renens. It highlights not only the sporting event itself, but also the social and unifying impact of the event. Par Hotel à gogo Édition The aim was to pay homage to the abandoned Grand Hôtel Chaumont & Golf in Neuchâtel. Having closed, because it was recluse of any civilization, in the heights of Neuchâtel. At the time it was in operation, the hotel used to organise themed activities to attract customers, but these were unsuccessful and the hotel went bankrupt. So I based the concept of my edition on this theme, recreating melancholy costume scenes inside the hotel, as if someone had never stopped carrying out these activities in this place frozen in time. I did all this with the help of official documents I d picked up on the spot, such as activity reports and flyers promoting the evenings, the bands, the fancy dress costumes and the concerts. These are included in the edition to accompany the photographic sequence. Par

Magazine - 23/24 As part of the publishing course led by Anouk Schneider and Chi-Long Trieu, 2nd year Visual Communication students had the opportunity to design an artist s book during the first semester. This book project stands out for its contemporary approach aimed at creating an editorial object that harmoniously integrates form and content in the current context of the editorial landscape. Students were encouraged to exploit their artistic freedom at all levels of creation, whether in terms of format, choice of paper, binding, layout, illustrations, text or typography. As part of this course, the artist s book can take shape through various illustration modalities, such as photography, reproduction, contextualization, drawing, 3D, etc. The emphasis is on the author s artistic vision and the means implemented to realize it. Students take on multiple roles as editor, curator and architect, covering the responsibilities of artistic director, designer, photographer, stylist, illustrator, typographer, editor-in-chief, and editorial secretary. This course highlights contemporary editorial design by exploring the narrative potential of a sequence of controlled content.
