With more than 70 years in existence, the journal witnessed significant moments in the history of typography and graphic design. The covers are a prominent aspect of the research, and their examination provides witness to the attitudes and aesthetic concerns of the period in which they were published. The Typographische Monatsblätter not only made “Swiss Design” known to an international audience, it also spread the burgeoning ideas of the “New Wave” style.
This research focused on the Swiss typographic journal issues from 1960 till 1990 and highlights the editorial project as an index and as an instrument in the development of a professional culture and its specific “public space”.
