Diploma project, ECAL 2020

by Margot Sparkes

Through various forms of projection, “At Night There Is No Sun” takes us into an almost enclosed mise-en-scene that reveals the contradictory emotions of a character stifled by the grip of a seemingly smooth and rectilinear urban environment. The fantasy of a promising lifestyle clashes with the emptiness of everyday life – a fake environment in which uncertainty, injunctions, detachment and pretence are interwoven. The satire of an idealised society with mechanical behaviours, “At Night There Is No Sun” seeks to emphasise through nonsense, the irrationality of a world in disarray.
