THUNDER is in the running for Switzerland for an Oscar nomination in the International Feature Film category. Congratulations to its director, ECAL graduate Carmen Jaquier.

The feature film, produced by Flavia Zanon (Close Up Films), has had a successful international festival career since celebrating its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival TIFF. Set against an imposing mountain backdrop, the coming-of-age drama has garnered not only numerous festival awards, but also the Swiss Film Award in two categories.

Graduate of the Bachelor and Master Cinema ECAL/HEAD, director Carmen Jaquier has several award-winning short films to her credit. In May 2023, she was honoured as “Emerging Talent” as part of the Women in Motion Awards at the Cannes Film Festival. She was selected by European Film Promotion to participate in the “Europe! Voices of Women in Film” talent programme at the Sydney Film Festival in June 2023.

On behalf of the Swiss Federal Office of Culture (FOC), the promotion agency SWISS FILMS coordinates the selection process of the official Swiss entry for the International Feature Film competition of the Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Hollywood will announce the five nominated films on January 23, 2024. The Oscars will be awarded at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on March 10, 2024.
