ECAL LECTURE - Mario Botta
21.03.2023
IKEA Auditorium, ECAL

On March 21, 2023, Mario Botta, acclaimed Swiss architect and designer, will give a lecture at ECAL on the relationship between architecture and design.

Born in 1943 in Mendrisio (CH), Mario Botta was inspired by Le Corbusier, Louis I. Kahnet and Carlo Scarpa, whom he met during his studies at the University Institute of Architecture in Venice (IUAV). Starting from the single-family houses built in the Canton of Ticino, his architectural work has subsequently embraced various typologies: schools, banks, administrative offices, libraries, museums and sacred buildings.

His most recent works include the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art in Charlotte (USA), the Campari headquarters and houses in Sesto San Giovanni (IT), the Tsinghua University Library in Beijing (CN) and the rehabilitation of the former Appiani estate in Treviso (IT).

Since 1982 he has also been involved in design, creating the "Prima" and "Seconda" chairs for Alias, and then designing numerous seats, tables, watches and other furnishings for important companies in Europe.

Among his iconic pieces are a series of 13 limited edition vases in ceramic for Atelier Rossicone, in polished pewter for Numa and in red marble for GVM La Civiltà del Marmo, and more recently the GEO vase for Lalique, as well as projects for the Riva 1920 factory, known for its furniture in natural wood.
