ECAL LECTURE – YERVANT GIANIKIAN
18.10.2023
IKEA Auditorium, ECAL

As part of his programme at the Lausanne Underground Film & Music Festival, Italian filmmaker Yervant Gianikian will be giving a masterclass on Wednesday 18 October at 4pm at the ECAL.

Born in Merano in 1942, Yervant Gianikian is an Italian artist, architect and filmmaker of Armenian origin. He co-directed most of his films with his partner Angela Ricci Lucchi until her death in 2018.

They have worked together since the 1970s and are known for their hand-crafted montage films in which narrative, poetry and critical analysis meet, redefining the documentary genre.

Their recurring themes, including totalitarianism, colonialism, the First World War, genocide and racism, are always approached through a singular use of archives and found footage.

Their work has been the subject of exhibitions and retrospectives at MoMA, the Venice Biennale (Golden Lion in 2015), the Tate Modern in London and the Cinémathèque française.
