To mark the retrospective dedicated to his work by the Cinémathèque suisse, the ECAL Cinema Department is hosting German filmmaker Wim Wenders for a public discussion.
Wim Wenders, born in Düsseldorf in 1945 and trained at the Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film in Munich (HFF), is one of the leading figures of New German Cinema in the 1970s.
Shaped by his experiences in postwar Germany, he first gained recognition with The American Friend (1977), a movie that illustrates the allure of American popular culture. His breakthrough came with Paris, Texas (1984), which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes. He has also directed internationally acclaimed and Oscar-nominated documentaries: Buena Vista Social Club (1999), Pina (2011), The Salt of the Earth (2014). His work, often poetic and contemplative, has made a significant contribution to cinema in the genres of the road movie and the artist portrait.
Screenings of Wim Wenders' films are scheduled at the Cinémathèque suisse from October 6 to 31, 2026. The director will be in attendance for the screening of Der Stand der Dinge on October 6 at 8:00pm.
