Bees, architecture, and Science Fiction – what could these three apparently  unconnected universes have in common? The first is motivated by my grandfather  who is himself a beekeeper. Additionally, I have a strong interest in science  fiction, specifically stories that describe dystopic, totalitarian societies of the  future. Through these interests, I discovered the 1998 book The Beehive Metaphor,  published by Juan A. Ramirez. In his work, he examines how bees have  influenced our architectures.  My pictures depict hybrid constructions ranging from traditional hives to  concrete bricks to architecture. Those subjects are raised to the level of sculpture,  yet their forms are too obviously related to their function to avoid the notion  of a precise goal.

DRIVE For this week’s theme, “Drive,” first-year photography students were asked to create a portrait shot on medium-format film. Inspired by the sensation of a first driving experience, travel, empowerment, or discovery, the week aimed to explore the relationship between one or more people and a vehicle.
