Archive as a Creative Act: The Absolute Cinema of Gregory J. Markopoulos and the Temenos Utopia

Artists who produce archives from their own work approach archival activity as a creative gesture: here, the archive literally becomes a work of art. In parallel with the “archival impulse” that has run through contemporary art since the 1960s, this research project examines the “performative agency” of archives when they are constituted from “image acts”. The selected corpus is based on an extremely singular case, the cinematographic work of Gregory J. Markopoulos (1928-1992) and the Temenos archives.

Mandate for the Maison Rousseau et Littérature, Genève

The Maison Rousseau et Littérature (MLR) in Geneva commissioned the ECAL/HEAD Master in Cinema to produce the audiovisual works for the museum, which reopened its doors in the old town of Geneva  after a period of restructuring in Spring 2021.

Collaboration with Fondation Opale

In the framework of the exhibition Before Time Began , Fondation Opale gave “carte blanche” to the students of the Master Cinema ECAL/HEAD to share their cinematic interpretation of contemporary Aboriginal art though seven short films.

Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) Mandate

with Hynek Bures, Antoine Jaccoud, Olivier Zuchuat

The  Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) asked the Master Ecal/Head for some short movies in order to enlighten the collaboration between Switzerland and Latvia. With their collaboration, the studentsdeveloped some screenplays and then directed a series of short documentaries  dealing with subjects like life in the Alp regions, Swiss countryside and multiculturalism. This workshop aimed to learn how to make a portrait.
