«Corps-concept» exhibition in collaboration with ECAL,21.05–19.11.2017,Maison d Ailleurs, Yverdon-les-Bains “Corps-concept” is an exhibition that reflects on contemporary conceptions of the body that underpin numerous ideological movements, including transhumanism. Issues regarding the body-object, the body-draft, body-commodity and the anthropological consequences of these different “conceptional reductions” will be examined. The aim of the exhibition is to offer an unprecedented insight into our current utopias and on the technoscientific driving force that irrigates these. From 21 My to 19 November at the Maison d Ailleurs in Yverdon-les-Bains. Opening reception 21 May from 5pm. At the invitation of Marc Atallah, director and curator of the Maison d Ailleurs, first-year Bachelor degree Photography students at the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne tackled the very contemporary issue of transhumanism. For two semesters, they confronted this school of thought which advocates the advent of a new human being and contends that the progress of science and technology makes it possible to transcend human nature. The project was led by Natacha Lesueur, a French artist-photographer and teacher at the ECAL. This exhibition presents a selection of photographic and filmic works, reflecting the transdisciplinary training programme offered by the ECAL. By contrasting different visions on ways of shaping the humanity of tomorrow, these projects express the numerous controversies and debates regarding transhumanism, as well as its accompanying ideologies. Exhibition opens from 21 May to 19 November 2017 Tu-Sun 11am-6pm Maison d Ailleurs Place Pestalozzi 14 Case postale 945 1400 Yverdon-les-Bains T. : + 41 24 425 64 38 www.ailleurs.ch
ECAL x Vitra Following a workshop led by Camille Blin and Erwan Bouroullec, Master Product Design students of ECAL present projects around the Workbays created by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec and edited by Vitra. Together with new functionalities, these prospective work environments are presented on the occasion of Design Parade Toulon – festival international d architecture d intérieur. With Workbays, which they created for Vitra a few years ago, the French designers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, who regularly collaborate with ECAL, have developed a micro-architectural system that redefines the working environment and breaks with the typical rigid planning structure of offices. Thus Workbays create distinct areas where individuals or groups can retreat from the general office environment to carry out specific activities. The units come equipped with everything users need: work surfaces, seating, optional storage and power connections. The structure of Workbays consists of slim aluminium profiles and organically shaped wall elements made of pressed polyester felt. “The ECAL students suggested we devised new typologies for these working environments, adding novel features and supplying them with new accessories”, says Camille Blin, the designer and professor who headed the project. So the Master Product Design students worked for a full semester under the watchful eye of Erwan Bouroullec and invented new structures that call to mind Japanese 0capsule hotels, a prototyping workshop, a gym, a bar, a garden or a resting area. For each of these spaces, the students created specific and original objects, ranging from Bluetooth loudspeakers to miniature lamps reminiscent of stadium ones, desk pads-cum-bags, a semi-standing stool, a cable-covering carpet, in & out wastepaper baskets, multi socket trays or a desk partition with vases and drawing pins. A 3D animation film specifically created by TRAUM Inc. presenting these unusual Workbays can also be seen at the exhibition. ECAL presents The Future Sausage by Carolien Niebling,04–09.04.2017,SaloneSatellite, Rho A research project conducted at ECAL by Carolien Niebling, ECAL Master Product Design graduate. It explores the design and taste of the future sausage, while critically discussing alternatives to meat consumption worldwide. Tasting available at the stand. HD Images Sausages are one of mankind s first-ever designed food items. The exhibition presents a series of innovative sausages, which have been made in collaboration with a butcher (Herman ter Weele from Oene, Netherlands) and a chef (Gabriel Serero from Lausanne, Switzerland), using design, ingredients and techniques outlined in a book by Carolien Niebling, an ECAL Master Product Design graduate. As part of a research project conducted at ECAL, Carolien Niebling explains that “Today, sausages remain a cornerstone of our food culture. England alone has over 470 different types of breakfast sausages, and in Germany there are even sausage laws, dictating specific rules for the making of sausages. Now, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), we are facing a serious shortage of protein-rich-food. Meat, in particular, will be scarce. One reason for this is over-consumption: in today s world, we simply consume too many animal products. So, I wonder, can we look to sausages to provide a solution once again?” The book is available for pre-order from the 4th of April until the 14th of May 2017 on: www.thefuturesausage.com Opening hours Tuesday – Sunday, 9.30 am – 6.30 pm SaloneSatellite Hall 22 – 24, Stand S02 Fiera Milano, 20017 Rho www.salonemilano.it www.carolienniebling.net www.thefuturesausage.com

ECAL inaugurates its new Print Centre,02.02.2017,ECAL, Renens Thanks to Canton of Vaud and to generous support from institutions in the region, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has inaugurated its new Print Centre at the heart of its campus in Renens, offering new state-of-the-art equipment to its students. These premises can be discovered during the ECAL Open Days 2017 on Friday 3 February (afternoon) and Saturday 4 February (all day). ECAL is constantly rewriting the book. The spaces made available in June 2016 the ECAL building by the Ateliers de la Ville de Renens have served to establish a unique Print Centre dedicated to students, which brings together, over close to 900 sq.m, a printing press (offset press and binding equipment), plotters, inkjet and laser printers as well as screen printing, lithography and etching workshops. Transformed this summer, fitted out at the end of the year, and finally equipped with new machines, including a Heidelberg 5-colour offset press, these new premises are now fully operational. But why develop a printing house and related techniques in an all-digital era? The main answer is the explanation of the acronym ECAL: Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne. The primary vocation of a SCHOOL is to teach know-how, to put fundamentals into practice, to encourage experiments and to provide skills in specific techniques. As such, a printing house is a great educational tool which is essential for a complete top-quality education. An art school without a quasi-professional printing house is not really an art school. The 600 ECAL students make this place their home to create or enhance their works. Graphic artists and photographers produce posters, magazines or books, industrial designers lay out portfolios, artists create editions, filmmakers print their posters. From an institutional point of view, all ECAL exhibition invitations, as well as numerous books and catalogues, are printed in-house, thus promoting the students achievements, but also highlighting the excellence of education in our Canton and region. Without a high-level printing facility on its premises, ECAL would not be what it is today - one of the world s top schools of art and design. And what would ART be without printing techniques and paper? Not much... No paintings, no books, no posters... Not to mention the contribution of techniques such as lithography, screen printing or etching, which are part of the history of art and which ECAL continues to develop, because this know-how allows widening the various media and promotes diversity in creativity. ECAL would like to thank Canton of Vaud, without which this project could not have been completed, as well as the generous institutions whose support allowed the development of the Print Centre: Loterie Romande, Sandoz Family Foundation and Fondation Casino Barrière de Montreux, Fondation ECAL+

ECAL x Vacheron Constantin at SIHH,16–20.01.2017,Palexpo, Geneva On the occasion of the 27th Salon international de la haute horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva from 16 to 20 January 2017, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents a new project for Vacheron Constantin. During a workshop led by the designers of Studio Formafantasma, the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship worked on the theme of astronomy and telling the time, in particular as related to Celestial Mechanics. Open to the public Friday 20 January 2017 The students were tasked with drawing inspiration from three ancestral instruments whose common denominator is the relationship between the Sun and the Earth (the armillary sphere, the astrolabe and the astronomical ring) and revisiting them in a conceptual, contemporary manner. To provide them with a better understanding of the Maison Vacheron Constantin and the world of Celestial Mechanics, students were invited to the Manufacture s headquarters for a week-long introduction, and subsequently to the Geneva History of Science Museum for a “customised” visit. Drawing on these inspirations and their extensive research, the students studied various means of representing time: using the sun to tell the time, illustrating the position of the stars in the sky or identifying the time the sun sets and rises by using an exact date and place. Throughout the development phase, the students worked in multicultural teams. They were accompanied and guided by teams from ECAL, Vacheron Constantin and the Italian designers from Studio Formafantasma, Simone Farresin and Andrea Trimarchi. The six different objects born of this adventure have in common technical challenges, creativity and a quest for excellence. «ECAL Graphic Design» in Hong Kong,30.11.2016–25.03.2017,Experience Centre, Hong Kong In collaboration with the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) and the Institute of Vocational Education (Lee Wai Lee), ECAL presents an exhibition of projects created by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction. Images HD ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Edited by the Gavillet & Rust studio, the book revolves around a long succession of tracking shots in which projects are not classified in categories, but organised by colour. HD Images ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. ECAL at Festival Images Vevey,10.09–02.10.2016,Festival Images, Vevey From 10 September to 2 October 2016, Festival Images Vevey will once again transform the little town of Vevey into the Swiss capital of photography. Visitors will get to discover 75 projects based on the theme of ‘immersion. Besides the numerous graduates, ECAL offers various installations: ----- ECAL/Florian Amoser – Quai Maria Belgia Quantified Landscape introduces an ongoing research project on the photographic transposition of space on a flat surface. Deep in the heart of underground galleries, Florian Amoser maps out the relief by placing a motor-mounted laser on the ground. The light beam slowly sweeps the walls of the cave, thereby drawing a continuous line according to the principle of contour lines. These long exposures create black and white landscapes that refer as much to analogue practice as to the digital finish of 3D modelling. These pictures are exhibited on display panels facing Lake Geneva. Original scenography by Festival Images Vevey ----- ECAL/Marvin Leuvrey – Quai Maria Belgia Revelations offers a fantasy-like narrative by immersing into Lake Geneva images of fragmented bathers. Leuvrey combines photography with visual research by applying soil, sand and trash collected from the lakeside onto the negatives and trying out various experiments with acetone, paint and oil. He also integrates water into his work by using the lake as a developing bath. By inviting visitors to tread on the images exhibited on platforms along the waterfront, the installation which starts off on Quai Maria Belgia prolongs the experimental process that Leuvrey uses on his photographs. Original scenography by Festival Images Vevey and Bachelor Industrial Design students (Margaux De Giovannini, Maki Nakaya-Sommet, Mélanie Zufferey). ----- ECAL PhotoJukeBox – La Ferblanterie Photography and music have much closer ties than we might think. Many musicians have paid tribute in one form or another to this mode of artistic expression, including Paul Simon (Kodachrome), Neil Young (Distant Camera), Lady Gaga (Paparazzi), Kraftwerk (Das Model), Barbara (Si la photo est bonne), Eddy Mitchell (La photo des jours heureux), Duran Duran (Girls on Film), The Cure (Pictures of You), Depeche Mode (Photographic) and Ringo Starr (Photograph). Festival Images has invited some thirty first-year Bachelor Photography students from ECAL to produce in one day a video clip for a song. The result is presented in the form of a jukebox that enables festivalgoers to select and listen to a tune by their favourite artist while enjoying a tailor-made video clip. ECAL presents 3 photographers at Circulation(s) CAL is the only school invited by the Festival Circulation(s) at the 104 in Paris until the 7 of August. “Skeuomorphic” is a body of work created by three ECAL Bachelor Photography graduates, Jacques-Aurélien Brun, Maxime Guyon and Jean-Vincent Simonet, and set designed with Marceau Avogadro and Anaïs Benoit Dignac, Bachelor Industrial Design graduates. An observational practice of the physical and contextual form of the photography medium has took place in the past year. Whether they record abstract visuals, re-appropriate commercial aesthetic discourse or playing with a whole delightful digitized chaos, the three artists here ended their process with the question of the persistently shifting modes of the photography media today. Their natural collaboration came in the investigation of physicality in photography. The apprehension of the image as an object dissipate the initial narratives from the three distinct bodies of work, but also attempts to expand the visual experiment on the current extreme ubiquity context that undergoes this medium. www.festival-circulations.com/about-us/ www.104.fr CAL is the only school invited by the Festival Circulation(s) at the 104 in Paris until the 7 of August. IKEA: Essentials for Modern Living by ECAL,08–09.06.2016,Democratic Design Days, Älmhult On the occasion of the Democratic Design Days organised (8th and 9th June) at the IKEA headquarters in Älmhult (Sweden), Bachelor Industrial Design students present " IKEA Essentials for Modern Living by ECAL", a series of projects created in collaboration with the famous Swedish brand. If you only had 50 things to furnish your apartment, what would they be and look like? This was the starting point of the latest collaboration between the Swedish furniture giant IKEA and ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. “A company like IKEA engaging with a school like ECAL challenges both parties around contemporary design practices and proves that Design can be collaborative as well as democratic” explains ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos. In the prospect of the Democratic Design Days in Älmhult, Sweden, IKEA s Design Manager, Marcus Engman, and its design team invited 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design students of ECAL to rethink basics, fundamental pieces of furniture and accessories for life and work at home - flexible and functional products - with a strong focus on affordability and sustainability. “Together with IKEA s design team, we tried to give the students a real taste of how it is to work with the largest furniture brand in the world: visiting their headquarters in Sweden and bringing them to factories in Poland. Something that only a handful of designers will experience in their career” says ECAL Head of Bachelor Industrial Design Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard. Under the guidance of designer Nicholai Wiig-Hansen, familiar with IKEA s values and work processes, the students produced a range of 50 essentials across all product areas, from chairs to cutlery, and textiles to lightings. As part of the design process, Wiig-Hansen wanted the students to work as a group, discover themselves, their strengths and weaknesses, and know where they can be valuable in a team. Nicholai Wiig-Hansen explains: “IKEA is about group effort, and I think teamwork is about designers leaving their ego aside for a moment and pushing together as a whole. This is something we unfortunately don t see enough in school projects where the process is often linear and idealised”. http://ikea.today/
