«ECAL Graphic Design» exhibition at the D Days Paris,30.05–05.06.2016,Boon, Paris Invited by Eyes on Talents, ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne presents an exhibition of projects realised by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction on the occasion of the D Days Paris (Boon Gallery) from 31 May to 5 June 2016 (cocktail 1 June from 7pm to 11pm). HD Images ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Edited by the Gavillet & Rust studio, the book revolves around a long succession of tracking shots in which projects are not classified in categories, but organised by colour. Having studied graphic design at ECAL, Ian Party and Maxime Buechi founded Swiss Typefaces in 2003, a company that designs typefaces that can be purchased from their online shop. They create complete alphabetic character sets that are comprised of about 800 different signs, which in part are composed of upper and lower case letters along with numerals. These two friends have known each other since their teenage years, 14 years old to be exact, they used to graffiti the streets of Lausanne together. Always knowing they wanted to be independent to create their art, they established themselves under the name B&P Typefoundry and gained some notoriety as a great force in the type design world when creating some custom typefaces for publications and companies like Vogue, L Officiel, Esquire, SangBleu, Mugler and more recently SKY TV and the City of Stockholm. As of 2011, Emmanuel Rey who also studied graphic design at ECAL joined the team and is now co-CEO and design director, with Ian Party. The company was renamed Swiss Typefaces the same year. Initialement décorateur pour le cinéma, Lorenzo Vitturi est diplômé de photographie et design à l IED de Rome (2004), études à la suite desquelles il effectue une résidence de deux ans à la Fabrica, le centre de recherches en communication de Benetton (2005 – 2007). Il rencontre le succès grâce à Dalston Anatomy, un travail publié sous forme de livre en 2013 et exposé notamment au Foam Photography Museum (Amsterdam), à The Photographers Gallery (Londres) ou encore chez Yossi Milo Gallery (New York). Under the guidance of designer Camille Blin, the students developed 14 furniture concepts celebrating the company s iconic BACKENZAHN™ stool. HD Images Brochure with explanations Marking the twentieth anniversary of modern design classic BACKENZAHN™, e15 invited Master Product Design students of ECAL to develop own interpretations for furniture and accessories utilising the same materials available to the company s co-founder Philipp Mainzer when he conceived the iconic stool. With a focus on sustainability, the BACKENZAHN™ stool was created using wood offcuts from the production of celebrated table BIGFOOT™. For its signature form and detail, seasoned heartwood is used, resulting in characteristic cracks, which make every stool unique. Under the guidance of designer Camille Blin, the students produced a series of 14 objects that reflect everyday functions, such as book shelves, children s toys or paperweights. ECAL x Punkt. in Milan,12–17.04.2016,Palazzo Litta, Milan On the occasion of the Milan International Furniture Fair 2016, from 12th to 17th April at the Palazzo Litta, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents innovative product concepts for consumer electronics aimed at simplifying life. These projects were realised by the 2nd year Master Product Design students in collaboration with Swiss technology brand Punkt. HD Images Brochure with explanations We are more dependent than ever on electronic devices. There s the fancy phone, watch or tablet, constantly vibrating and begging for attention; but let s not forget the simple tools of everyday life. Those basic objects that help in your daily routines: waking up in the morning, connecting the power plug, or talking to someone with a good old-fashioned landline. How can we make these better, more intuitive, or get rid of any unnecessary functions and simplify both their use and formal language? Thilo Alex Brunner, head of the Master Product Design programme, provides some possible answers to theses questions: “To cooperate with both Petter Neby (Punkt founder/president) and the Jasper Morrison Office for Design (Punkt. art director) means a great deal for us, since we share many ‘Swiss design values such as efficiency and simplicity – but always with an element of surprise.” Under the guidance of designer Augustin Scott de Martinville, the students product ideas are diverse and range from weather stations to wall printers, and torches to projectors. ECAL is invited by the Circulation(s) Festival in Paris,30.03–07.08.2016,Le 104, Paris ECAL is the only school invited by the Festival Circulation(s) at the 104 in Paris until the 7 of August. “Skeuomorphic” is a body of work created by three ECAL Bachelor Photography graduates, Jacques-Aurélien Brun, Maxime Guyon and Jean-Vincent Simonet, and set designed with Marceau Avogadro and Anaïs Benoit Dignac, Bachelor Industrial Design graduates. An observational practice of the physical and contextual form of the photography medium has took place in the past year. Whether they record abstract visuals, re-appropriate commercial aesthetic discourse or playing with a whole delightful digitized chaos, the three artists here ended their process with the question of the persistently shifting modes of the photography media today. Their natural collaboration came in the investigation of physicality in photography. En tant que designer de polices de caractères, il a notamment travaillé sur des projets pour Vogue Hommes International, The New York Times Magazine ou l ICA – Institute of Contemporary Art London. ECAL at Baselworld with Reuge,17–24.03.2016,Messeplatz, Basel On the occasion of Baselworld from 17th to 24 March 2016,, ECAL and Reuge present four music boxes realised by students of the MAS Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship. MEDITATION by ECAL/Clément Beaugé This project is a new interpretation of what a music box can do. Inspired by the idea of using your senses, this is a piece that you can enjoy visually, you can feel, you can smell and of course, you can listen to. The magical music, the candle sent with its delicate light will transport you into world of relaxation. It won t be long before your new music box becomes your favorite ritual for relaxing at home. This music box is simple and elegantwith a pleasant surprise, the mechanical movement makes the candle turn. The candle platform isdirectly attached to the spring-housing, so when the movement starts you can see the candle turn around the music box. Approximately 8 to 9 turns when the movement is fully charged. HARMONY by ECAL/Einat Kirschner This music box is inspired by contemporary design. At first glance the music box appears to be a modern speaker or portable radio. This look allows the piece to easily fit the modern style that speaks to a younger audience while still enjoying the soothing traditional sound of a music box. The design was created using the traditional music box materials but with a new interpretation of the design. The key, which becomes a main element in the design, takes its shape from the modern collection of Reuge music boxes and the volume button of radios and speakers. This music box can be both hung on a wall or stationed on a table. With this new design we give you the possibility of having a unique music box that can be very easily moved from your living to your bedroom or the bathroom, ... The perforated pattern on the box allows the music to come through and highlights the key that turns slowly while the music is playing. DISCOVER by ECAL/Jungyou Choi A surprising piece that opens in an original way. Often our music boxes are closed and the movement inside isn t easily seen or, sometimes its not even possible to see the movement at all! With this original opening concept we wanted to show more of the beautiful movement and allow the costumer to have a playful music box. There are two metal pieces that cover the movement and protect it. These covers slide in one direction from the front to the back or in the opposite direction. Just slide the first or second cover or both and discover a beautiful golden-colored 36 note musical movement. The graphics on the first cover, made with holes, allows you to see the second cover and creates a dynamic object with an overlay of colours and materials. ALPHORN by ECAL/Pauline Masson Limited edition of 10 pieces signed by the Swiss craftsman. What could be more natural then for a Swiss company with over 150 years of experience to be inspired by an iconic Swiss instrument, the Alphorn. This music boxis a reinterpretation of the traditional Alphorn which is a symbolic object of Switzerland and the Swiss craftsmanship. The box is made from a very rare wood, the exceptional resonance spruce.This wood which is over 200 years old is the fundamental type of wood chosen by stringed instrument makers. It combines lightness, ensuring an excellent response to vibrations, with rigidity and tonicity guaranteeing substantial mechanical resistance. It originates from the Risoud Forest, (located right next to our factory) one of the largest and oldest in Europe. Even in the age of Stradivarius, specialists sourced tone wood from this forest which, thanks to its poor soil and its harsh climate, produces wood of exceptional quality. Les projets réalisés seront exposés en première suisse dans les espaces publics de l hôtel, invitant les passants à l inspiration. «ECAL Graphic Design» book and exhibition,03.03–08.04.2016,Gallery l elac, ECAL On the occasion of the release of the “ECAL Graphic Design” book published by JRP|Ringier, ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne presents from 4th March to 8th April at the Gallery l elac (opening on Thursday 3rd March 2016 from 6pm to 8pm) an exhibition of projects realised by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction. In relation with this event, François Rappo, Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction Professor, will give a lecture titled “Next” on Thursday 24th March 2016 at 6pm in the IKEA Auditorium, ECAL. IMAGES HD ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Edited by the Gavillet & Rust studio, the book revolves around a long succession of tracking shots in which projects are not classified in categories, but organised by colour. These new tools can convert images for printing devices using two, three, four or five spot colors. It offers a large variety of combinations, from basic colors to metallics, neons and pastels. “Color Library” was created within the “Workflow” research project (R&D) about printing technologies at ECAL / University of Art and Design Lausanne. Née à Strasbourg en 1965, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster est une artiste de renommée internationale. Elle nourrit son œuvre d une mémoire vivante du cinéma, de la littérature et des structures ouvertes de l architecture et de la musique. Après s être fait connaître dans les années par ses «chambres», elle a participé à de nombreuses expositions dans des lieux aussi prestigieux que la Dia Arts Foundation à New York, la Documenta XI à Kassel ou encore la Tate Modern à Londres. Lauréate du Prix Marcel Duchamp, elle a par ailleurs contribué au design intérieur de boutiques Balenciaga à New York. Actuellement, et ce jusqu au 1er février 2016, elle bénéficie d une grande exposition rétrospective et prospective au Centre Pompidou Paris. Collaboration ECAL/Emlio Pucci,29.09.2015,Granaiolo The famous Italian brand Emilio Pucci pairs with the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne for a collaboration born at Granaiolo, the brand s archive and talent center nearby Florence. During a three-day workshop led by Vincent Jacquier, a selection of students and assistants from the school s Visual Communication Department had the opportunity to explore and reinterpret signature print «Interactive Scarves» is the first of a series of surprising projects originated from their endeavors and achievements during the workshop. The designer Pauline Saglio has developed a three-pieced installation that proposes an innovative and poetic way to discover a scarf. The colors, shapes and compositions of each Emilio Pucci print are enhanced by light and sound to alter the perception of the iconic object, offering visitors a magical experience that stimulates all of the senses. Created by Clémence Chatel (Bachelor Graphic Design graduate), the second project is “Dolce Vita”, a set of irreverent patterns brimming with motifs of Italian culture – pasta, ice cream and more – in this case used to deck out skateboards rather than Pucci s coveted fashions. ECAL Appartement 50, Cité Radieuse,04–19.07.2015,Cité Radieuse, Marseille In September 2014, twelve Master Product Design students of ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne were invited to reflect on a collection of objects to meet everyday needs in the Cité Radieuse in Marseille. The outcome of this research is being displayed as part of an exhibition staged in Apartment 50 from 4 to 19 July 2015. A 52-page publication produced by the Art Direction Master students will be issued concurrently. HD PICTURES Apartment 50 was restored by two enthusiasts, Jean-Marc Drut and Patrick Blauwart, as close as possible to its original condition. Listed as a historical monument, the venue occasionally hosts exhibition projects. World-renowned designers have already exhibited there, such as Jasper Morrison, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic and Pierre Charpin. Thus, under the direction of Thilo Alex Brunner, head of the Master Product Design at ECAL, and of ECAL professor Augustin Scott de Martinville, a series of objects was produced over one semester by the Product Design Master students. The project began in September 2014 with a three-day workshop in the Cité Radieuse, allowing students to experience life in the building. Based on their various observations, they created objects to “inhabit” Apartment 50, focusing particularly on the following features: The specific climate of the apartments: the fan creates an air flow on the mezzanine and the cushions are designed to fit both on the living room s indoor parapets and on the loggias tables. The flexibility of interior spaces: the large rotating lamp serves to light either the dining room or the living room in turn, while the small model can be used either on a desk or a bedside table. Tours of Apartment 50 which take place regularly: the carpet, crafted with the support of the Ruckstuhl AG manufacture in Langenthal, displays a map showing how the Cité Radieuse blended in with its environment at the time of construction, while the “unit” metre provides a simple tool to explain the Modulor system. Life in the communal areas, especially the roof terrace which serves as a meeting place: the chair and folding table are designed to facilitate migration from the living room of the apartment, while the picnic box allows to comfortably carry everything you for an aperitif. In addition to the projects around the above-mentioned specificities, half a dozen other objects can be discovered on the spot or in the related publication. In March 2015, the students of the ECAL Master Art Direction were invited to attend a four-day workshop to experience and document everyday life in the building with a view to editing a publication. Through the architectural spectrum across 52 pages, this editorial project includes portraits of residents or fictional characters inspired by the Modulor system, as well as still lifes and original typefaces echoing the building s proportions. The Most Beautiful Swiss Books: many awards for ECAL graduates Ce jeudi 25 juin dès 18h au Helmhaus à Zurich, vernissage de l exposition «Les plus beaux livres suisses» avec la présence parmi les 17 livres primés de 12 ouvrages réalisés par des personnalités en lien avec l ECAL 11 diplômés (aussi professeurs à l ECAL pour certains) du Bachelor Design Graphique ont été récompensés: Nicolas Eigenheer + Vera Kaspar, Teo Schifferli 2x, David Keshavjee + Guy Meldem, Marie Lusa, Gavillet & Rust + Vincent Devaud, Marietta Eugster, Rober Huber. Ainsi que trois intervenants: Laurenz Brunner 2x, Lex Trüb et Jonathan Hares. Ce dernier a également remporté la médaille d or au «Best Book Design from all over the World», où Paul Elliman, intervenant à l ECAL, est reparti avec la «Goldene Letter» (plus haute distinction). Ten ECAL graduates awarded during Art Basel A l occasion des Swiss Art Awards – Swiss Design Awards présentés à Art Basel du 16 au 21 juin 2015, 10 diplômés de l ECAL ont été primés par l Office fédéral de la culture (OFC) et ses partenaires. Les anciens écaliens remportent ainsi 7 récompenses sur les 18 attribuées dans le cadre des Prix fédéraux de design. Ils repartent également avec un Prix Kiefer Hablitzel et deux Prix fédéraux d art. ECAL exhibition at Montreal,22.05–11.10.2015,Montreal For its 53rd season, the Reford Gardens (Les Jardins de Métis) present ‟Lambmowers”, a series of installations at once practical and amusing. These agricultural accessories will enhance the well-being of the sheep who will mow the lawns previously maintained by a fleet of lawnmowers and Reford Gardens staff. Exhibition from May 23 until October 11, 2015. This project was conceived and built on site by 2nd year students in the Bachelor Industrial Design from ECAL. A selection of the installations and photographs by Nicolas Haeni, graduate of the Bachelor Photohraphy and of the Master Art Direction, are exhibited in the open air on the Place de la Dauversière next to the historic Musée du Château Ramezay Museum in Old Montreal. Jeudi 21 mai 2015 à 18h, Auditoire IKEA, ECAL Pascale Mussard, directrice artistique « petit h » d Hermès, Paris Après des études de droit et un diplôme à l European Business School, Pascale Mussard débute sa carrière au bureau de style de Nicole de Vesian. En 1978, elle entre chez Hermès comme responsable des achats de tissus au prêt-à-porter féminin. Elle devient ensuite l attachée de presse d Hermès, puis prend successivement la responsabilité de la publicité et des relations publiques. Par la suite, elle crée et dirige pendant six ans le nouveau département des expositions, puis anime les vitrines du réseau français. En 2002, elle devient directrice artistique déléguée auprès de Jean-Louis Dumas, puis codirectrice artistique avec Pierre-Alexis Dumas en 2006. Antoine Boudin, designer industriel, Hyères Antoine Boudin est né en Avignon en 1986. Diplômé de l ECAL en 2008, il gagne le Grand prix du jury de Design Parade 4. En 2011, il ouvre son atelier à Hyères afin de développer de nouveaux projets et de continuer ses recherches sur les matériaux, la Provence et la mer. La même année, il remporte la Bourse Agora pour le Design avec laquelle il initie son projet sur la canne de Provence qui sera ensuite exposé en 2014 au Palais de Tokyo lors des Designer s Days (Paris). Jeudi 7 mai 2015 à 18 h, Auditoire IKEA, ECAL Wade Guyton, artiste, New York Né en 1972 à Hammond (Etats-Unis), Wade Guyton produit des œuvres qui assument la structure et l apparence de peintures au sens traditionnel du terme et réalisent pourtant un bouleversement complet des codes du modernisme. Elles sont produites à l aide de très grandes imprimantes jet d encre . Son travail a fait l objet d expositions à la Galerie Chantal Crousel (Paris), à la Kunsthalle (Zürich) ou encore au Whitney Museum of American Art (New York). Virginia Overton, artiste, Brooklyn Née en 1971 à Nashville (Etats-Unis), Virginia Overton est connue entre autres pour des sculptures réalisées avec des matériaux comme le bois. Thymio meets ECAL During a one week workshop students were asked to develop projects using the Thymio robot. 50 Robots were available. The week began with an introduction to Thymio and its secrets by Prof. Francesco Mondada from EPFL. Students worked then in group with the task to make Thymio(s) write a word, all those words was then put together to form a sentences that you can discover in this movie. Thymio is an affordable educational robot. It provides three main features: a large number of sensors and actuators, an educative interactivity based on light and touch and a programming environment featuring graphical and text programming. Thymio Robot has been developed in a collaboration between the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the Ecole Cantonale d Art de Lausanne (ECAL).

A premiere for a school! www.ecal-typefaces.ch With this website created in collaboration with Swiss Typefaces, ECAL is probably the first university in the world to have launched an online type foundry, allowing direct access for anyone to a selection of typefaces, all designed by students. Thanks to renowned professors such as François Rappo, Aurèle Sack, Ian Party, Gilles Gavillet and Ludovic Balland, and prestigious visiting lecturers such as Frederik Berlaen, Kai Bernau, Peter Bilak, Laurenz Brunner, Christian Schwartz, Paul Barnes and Emmanuel Rey, ECAL has been able to boast a solid reputation in Type Design teaching for several years. Fonts designed by students during the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses (or for the diploma) are regularly used for ECAL corporate communications (posters, invitations cards, catalogues...), and because of this usage, people often ask to us how to acquire these typefaces, in particular our Headline Fonts. This website is here to answer those requests. ECAL is proud to be able to share these fonts with the largest possible audience and to offer a platform for our students, deserving heirs of a typically Swiss know-how.

ECAL Milano 2015 (with Vacheron Constantin): Arts & Crafts & Design: Time according to ECAL & Swiss Craftsmen,14–19.04.2015,Museo Bagatti Valsecchi, Milan Vacheron Constantin will be presenting the “Arts & Crafts & Design: Time according to ECAL and Swiss Craftsmen” exhibition, produced in partnership with ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne (University of Art and Design Lausanne) and the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d Arte (at the Swiss Pavilion at Expo Milan 2015, (the Universal Exhibition to be hosted by Milan) and of which a preview will be launched during the Milan Furniture Fair. This is an innovative approach combining contemporary creation and arts and crafts, and entirely dedicated to knowledge transfer. This prestigious event represents a magnificent opportunity for exchanges as well as a unique showcase for the expertise and crafts of the participating countries. Expo Milan 2015 will take place in Italy from May 1st to October 31st2015 and is particularly relevant in view of the history of the Manufacture: in 1819, François Constantin, during a voyage to Italy, first enounced the working principle that is now the company motto: “Do better if possible, and that is always possible…” The exhibition to be presented in Milan is the fruit of a joint project bringing together ECAL, the prestigious university of art and design with an international reputation, the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d Arte, an institution known for its commitment to the sustainability of the artistic crafts, and the Manufacture Vacheron Constantin. Since 2013, Vacheron Constantin has partnered the ECAL s Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship, a unique training course for the various creative arts professions related to the world of luxury. This is an opportunity for students to make a contribution each year to conducting a concrete project, in partnership with the Manufacture. This original approach links contemporary creation to ancestral know-how. Within the framework of this project, ECAL and Vacheron Constantin have asked 12 students to combine their creativity with that of experienced craftsmen in order to produce unique objects and demonstrate the richness, the variety, as well as the relevance to contemporary creation of these artisanal crafts. Under the leadership of Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin (Studio Formafantasma) these 12 “duos” have worked on the same theme, Time, and more precisely the cyclical time of the seasons, using materials as diverse as paper and glass. Visitors will thus have an opportunity to explore mobiles crafted with an automaton maker; a picnic bag made with a saddler; a vase created with a glass blower; a mirror cast in an aluminium foundry; a lamp built with a stonemason; an axe and knives developed with an expert in carbon fibre; an assembly of stained glass windows composed with a master glassmaker; plates designed with a ceramist; fans produced with a paper-cutting specialist; a tray fashioned from marquetry; a millstone carved in conjunction with a stone sculptor and finally a musical box executed with the help of a stringed-instrument maker (luthier). These works, born of a student-craftsman dialogue, have given rise to an exhibition entitled “Arts&Crafts&Design: Time according to ECAL and Swiss Craftsmen, previewed in Milan during the Milan Furniture Fair (Salone Internazionale del Mobile from April 14th to 19th 2015) prior to being presented in the context of the VIP Lounge of the Swiss Pavilion for the entire duration of Expo Milan 2015 (May 1st to October 31st 2015).
