A partir du titre d une nouvelle de Jack London*, proposer aux étudiants d envisager leur pratique artistique comme une sorte de géographie. Les inciter à explorer cette région à la manière d un trappeur ou d un touriste éclairé afin d élargir et de diversifier leurs champs de connaissance et tenter ainsi de les aider à mieux percevoir les contours nécessairement mouvants de leur territoire. Pour cette exposition, les étudiants ont été invités à envisager leurs productions artistiques comme des feux, des dispositifs d allumages. Ceci afin de tenter de s approcher le plus possible des choses qui les animent. An ECAL graduate has won the (Swiss) James Design Award 2015 Jordane Vernet a remporté le James Dyson Award 2015 ( Suisse) avec son travail de diplôme en Bachelor Design Industriel de l ECAL Réalisée en collaboration avec plusieurs étudiants de l EPFL (Marc Spaltenstein, Michael Stettler et Lucas Meyer), cette innovation permet une méthode de stérilisation avantageuse, pauvre en énergie et économe en eau pour les hôpitaux dans les pays du tiers monde. Diplomas – 2015 Jérôme Wilfredo Baccaglio , Logos for Drones and Such... I created a catalogue for drone logos. It gathers a heterogenous iconography (invented, drawn, found) whose every motif is available for purchase as a canvas, a tattoo, a drawing or a sticker. This is an oblique strategy adopted to talk about the interpretation of an image (as the spectator, or as the artist, to assign it a meaning, a name); the versus created by hand-made work and a digital image; mercantilism; the matter of copyright and its role in an information-infested era. Tina Braegger, Fasanenstrasse 30 I made an architectural model of white cardboard, placed on four white metal legs. I decorated the model with white curtains that flow over the model down to the floor. Inside the model, I put old toys of mine, objects that originally belong to a doll s house. By attaching the legs directly to the model, it looks like a table. I wanted to create something surreal, like a dream; the objects inside the model are slightly too big, and the model bleeds off as the curtains overflow. It was questioned whether the surfaces should be solid or empty, filled with monochromy or blocks of primary colour. One can always enlarge them if necessary. These are ai files. One no longer needs a Hasselblad camera. There is not a whole lot left of the source image. By the way: photography wants to appropriate space. But we are still unable to do so. Collaboration with Christofle – 2015 ECAL lays the table For this fifth collaboration between ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne and the Maison Christofle, the students of the Master of Advanced Studies have taken the challenge to dive straight into the heart of silversmithing history by creating a set of cutlery. This particularly demanding project required a perfect mastery of proportions, ergonomy and detail refinement. During a four weeks workshop, led by the Slovakian born and Lausanne based designer Tomas Kral, the 12 students of the programme have individually created their concepts. Within the variety of proposals, 6 projects were selected for further development and the production of prototypes. This second phase enabled the students to further refine the details, while constantly verifying the precision of the forms trough 3D printed resin mock-ups. Thanks to cutting edge technologies - in particular 3D printing in metal - and the expertise of Christofle s centuries old craftsmanship, 6 sets of forks, knives and spoons were produced in a record timeframe, while ensuring the outstanding quality of the manual finishing.Dipping Rodrigo Caula Inspired by the Christofle manufacture visit and especially by the process of silver coating, this project creates the illusion of a raw core hidden in the inner of the cutlery. During the process, the pieces are submerged in a silver bath while being held on its tips. The chiseled core which reveals the raw and textured appearance, seems to be covered and smoothened by a film applied to the rest of the piece. Frisson Alexis Tourron For this project, the point of departure was an abstentious and pure form, while the handles were subtilely transformed. Inspired by the movement and waves on the surface of the water, this series of cutlery comes to life through its refined aesthetics and the reflections on the polished metallic surface. Posata Stefano Panterotto This project bridges the gap between tradition and modernity with its forms inspired by the gestures and the handling of the cutlery. The details like bevels, cuts or marks become subtile decorations and enrich the pieces with a refined and contemporary character. Collerette Ophélie Sanga Just as the Renaissance costumes, the ruff decorates the edges of this cutlery set. Reminding us of gathered fabric, the wavy surface creates a dynamic play of reflections, referencing at the same time the past and the present, resulting in a highly contemporary piece. Etang d Or Kaja Solgaard Dahl This project was largely inspired by the lakeside landscape at dusk. The base of the cutlery was hollowed out and the resulting indentation was then plated with a golden reflecting finish. The erosion of the volume leads to a pronounced contrast between perfection and imperfection. Point de Paris Annie Tung Anchored in the French cultural patrimony, the laced fabric creates a direct association to the environment of the table. All the pieces of cutlery seem to be wrapped by a fine broidery in order to perfectly match to the fabric of the tablecloth and the napkins. The pieces manage to be at the same time feminine, delicate and classic while maintaining a contemporary impression due to their minimalistic formal language.

Collaboration with Vacheron Constantin – 2015 Vacheron Constantin presents the “Arts & Crafts & Design: Time according to ECAL and Swiss Craftsmen”, an exhibition produced in partnership with ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne and the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d Arte for the Swiss Pavilion at the Milan Expo (May 1st – October 31st 2015), and presented as a preview during the Salone del Mobile at the Museo Bagatti Valsecchi in Milan. This original approach links contemporary creation to several time-honoured know-hows. Within the framework of this project, Vacheron Constantin has asked 12 students from the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship of ECAL to combine their creativity with that of experienced craftsmen in order to produce unique objects and demonstrate the richness, the variety, as well as the relevance to contemporary creation of these artisanal crafts. ECAL Milano 2015: #ECAL #PhotoBooth,14–19.04.2015,Spazio Orso 16, Milan On the occasion of the Milan International Furniture Fair 2015, from 14th to 19th April, the ECAL/University of Art And Design Lausanne presents “#ECAL #PhotoBooth”. The ECAL students of the Bachelor Photography and Master Product Design present a series of interactive installations showing how mobile phone cameras and the selfie phenomenon changed the way we look at ourselves. Images HD Video Catalogue/Cards Press release How can one create objects and installations around the portrait theme in this digital age? What means are available to disseminate these? How can one make visitors interact with the exhibits and turn viewers into the main actors in the exhibition? Over a semester, 1st year Master Product Design students and 2ndyear Bachelor Photography students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne worked on these issues with the aim to present their findings as part of an exhibition. Under the watchful eye of Vincent Jacquier, Head of the Visual Communication Department, of designer Camille Blin and photographer Nicolas Haeni, the students were able to understand, using various approaches, how current – material or virtual – technology alters our traditional relationship with portraits, be they selfies or pictures of others. Using modern media as well as more run-of-the-mill devices, exhibition visitors are invited to directly experiment the processes imagined by the students, allowing them to discover new interactive and fun ways of having their picture taken 3.0 style. Based on this principle, the exhibition stages an installation playing with the visitor s shadow; the combination of a mirror and scanner to create realistic or distorted self-portraits; an image which is altered through song; a tribute to famous departed designers through a system of filters placed in front of a smartphone; analogically merged faces; a 180° portrait produced by a range of reflective surfaces; a trompe-l oeil projection on a mask; a family of objects able to hijack the smartphone camera function to create original images; a poetic reinterpretation Instagram; and finally, self-portraits captured by the photo itself. Saber, film de diplôme réalisé à l ECAL avec Box Productions, qui a remporté le Quartz du Meilleur court métrage à l occasion des Prix du cinéma suisse DISCIPLINE de Christophe M. Saber 21h50, dans une épicerie de Lausanne tenue par des Egyptiens. Excédé, un père de famille perd patience et corrige son enfant désobéissante. Une cliente choquée exprime son désaccord. D autres clients interviennent, chacun y met son grain de sel et le personnel est dépassé. La conversation se transforme en débat, le débat en dispute. Christophe M. Saber Né en 1991 au Caire. Chain Reaction – 2015 This installation is composed of six iPads disposed one above the other. Students in group of two developed an application that could be adapted for the six different devices. A system then allows the iPads to communicate with each other. Each unit is related to a type of behavior developed independently but taking into account all the juxtaposed iPads to form a coherent visual whole.

Die Nacktwanderer When I saw a nudist beach for the first time last summer, I immediately knew that I had to deal with this group nudity in my diploma. “Naked hiking” is a modern split-off from which even primal naturists take distance; nudity in public provokes. Nudity and Nature have always been big subjects in art. Inspired by the romantic paintings I was hunting for photographs which feature this tension between romantic nature and disturbing contemporary elements – an opposition between nature and culture. 2014-2015 posters of the Lausanne Opera realized by ECAL Suite à un concours, les affiches de la saison 2014-2015 de l Opéra de Lausanne ont été réalisées par trois étudiants (Benoît Jeannet, Tancrède Ottiger, David Scarnà) de 2e année du Bachelor Photographie et du Bachelor Design Graphique de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne. La première affiche (d une série de sept) est à découvrir dès le 10 septembre 2014 en ville de Lausanne Vincent Jacquier, responsable du Département Communication Visuelle de l ECAL, explique le déroulement du concours d affiches organisé à l ECAL «L ECAL fonctionne un peu comme un opéra. Un lieu propice à la création, où divers savoir-faire se rencontrent. Ainsi, à l instar de cet art où orchestre, choeur et ballet s associent pour magnifier une oeuvre, l ECAL a pour habitude d allier différentes disciplines pour travailler sur un projet. Cette transversalité s est donc exprimée naturellement sur le concours d affiches pour la saison 2014-2015 de l Opéra de Lausanne, organisé au sein même de l ECAL. Initiée par l Opéra de Lausanne, cette opportunité de créer des synergies entre nos deux institutions sonnait juste. Une évidence également pour notre directeur Alexis Georgacopoulos! Nous avons donc très rapidement décidé de réunir des étudiants de 2e année du Bachelor en Photographie et de celui en Design Graphique, avec pour objectif de former des petits ensembles aux talents divers, mais complémentaires. Le ton, en mode majeur bien sûr, était donné: quarante étudiants, huit opéras et quelques mois pour présenter les résultats au jury. Pour développer ce travail et ne pas perdre la dimension pédagogique, nous avons demandé à deux jeunes professeurs prometteurs d être nos chefs d orchestre: Philippe Jarrigeon (Paris) et Jonas Wandeler (Zurich). Ces deux ténors de la photographie et du graphisme ont ainsi suivi les étudiants sans intermède lors d un workshop préliminaire d une semaine, puis staccato durant tout le semestre académique, pour finir bien évidemment fortissimo! Début 2014, lors de la présentation au jury, j ai été très fier en découvrant la totalité des projets. Les étudiants ont prouvé que produire des visuels pour une institution culturelle telle que l Opéra leur permettait d exprimer une grande partie de leur créativité et de leur sensibilité. Souvent avec poésie et humour. Leur imaginaire s immisçant parfaitement dans cet univers où musique rime souvent avec magique, mais aussi avec technique(s). J ai hâte que le grand public découvre la série d affiches gagnante. Avec son identité claire et son style graphique plutôt moderne, elle devrait séduire un public jeune peu coutumier du genre, tout en parlant aux habitués grâce à ses images référencées. ECAL wins 3 awards at the Locarno Film Festival Pour la cinquième fois en six ans (et la 4e fois consécutive), un étudiant diplômé du Département Cinéma de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, dirigé par le cinéaste Lionel Baier, a remporté un Pardino au Festival del film Locarno Lors de cette édition, Jean-Guillaume Sonnier (né en 1988 à Annecy), diplômé du Bachelor Cinéma en 2011, a été récompensé par un Pardino d argento (CHF 5 000.-) pour son court métrage «Petit homme». Rhona Mühlebach (née en 1990 à Zurich) a gagné, quant à elle, le Prix Action Light du «meilleur espoir suisse» (prix sous forme de prestations techniques), ainsi que le Prix Cinema e Gioventù (CHF 1 500.-), pour «Abseits der Autobahn», son film de diplôme 2014 dans le cadre du Bachelor Cinéma de l ECAL. Par ailleurs, le film de diplôme 2014 en Bachelor Cinéma de Christophe M. Saber (né en 1991 au Caire), «Discipline», est sélectionné en compétition au prestigieux Toronto International Film Festival (du 4 au 14 septembre 2014). «Petit homme» de Jean-Guillaume Sonnier, 30 minutes Réservé, mais déterminé, David est un jeune apprenti jockey. Dans son centre de formation, il est fasciné par Eliab, à peine plus âgé que lui, qui court pour une célèbre écurie. Afin de se rapprocher de lui et d obtenir des conseils, David l épie et couvre ses fugues nocturnes. Eliab commence à se livrer, mais David est-il vraiment clair quant à ses motivations? «Abseits der Autobahn» de Rhona Mühlebach, 22 minutes Roman et Linda sont un couple qui n a depuis bien longtemps plus rien en commun, exception faite des Bloody Mary qu ils partagent. Un jour, ils partent pour une randonnée en vélo dans les montagnes suisses, Roman, pourtant pas en grande forme, sur un vélo traditionnel alors que Linda, elle, utilise une bicyclette électrique. Leur virée s avère rapidement plus compliquée que prévu et ce couple en pleine stagnation se retrouve dans l obligation de bouger et d agir. «Discipline» de Christophe Saber, 12 minutes 21h50, dans une épicerie de Lausanne tenue par des Egyptiens. Excédé, un père de famille perd patience et corrige son enfant désobéissante. Une cliente choquée exprime son désaccord. D autres clients interviennent, chacun y met son grain de sel et le personnel est dépassé. La conversation se transforme en débat, le débat en dispute. La situation vire peu à peu au chaos. ECAL Milan 2014: ECAL & Camper present the film "Training",09.04.2014,Cinema Arlecchino, Milan For the Milan International Furniture Fair 2014, Camper, the Majorcan shoe brand, and the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne present an exceptional multidisciplinary project at the Arlecchino Cinema on Wednesday 9 April (from 9 pm to midnight). Students of the Master Product Design have made a shop, under the supervision of Bethan Laura Wood, which has been used as the set for “Training”, a short film directed by Jan Czarlewski, a graduate of the ECAL Bachelor Cinema. Images HD The projection of this fiction film is accompanied by a documentary by Arthur Touchais, who is also a graduate of the Bachelor Cinema. All communication materials for this event (graphic design and photography) have been undertaken by former students of ECAL. “ The basic idea was to create a full-size Camper shop in the Studio Cinema of ECAL,and shoot a short film,” explains Ramón Úbeda, the person in charge of the project at Camper. “We wanted this project to be multidisciplinary and for it to bring together many of the different skills taught at the ECAL, especially the Cinema option, that makes this school a unique training centre of its kind.” The first stage was having the students of the Master Product Design create a mock-up of a shop. Under the supervision of the British designer Bethan Laura Wood, they have created an original set, an authentic design piece with two-way mirrors – a special effect that is vital to the script – and shaped like a huge shoe box. “ What is there to film in a Camper shop? To discover the film s concept we were inspired by the company philosophy: humour and jokiness”, reveals Jan Czarlewski, director of this short film lasting around 12 minutes. With that in mind, the film could only be a comedy. The story is about the first day at work of a young stammering, awkward and stressed salesman, who is trained by the shop manager, who is himself an anxious person… This short fictional piece is accompanied by a documentary by Arthur Touchais, narrating the process of putting together the whole project, from making the shop to creating the communication materials, done by Romain Collaud, graduate of the Bachelor in Graphic Design at the ECAL.
