Applied Photography ZOOM IN ZOOM OUT This course, both practical and technical, required students to develop a true photographer s eye. Its goal was to introduce them to or help them refine their skills in various photographic genres, such as still life, portraiture, architecture, as well as documentary and staged photography. These disciplines demanded particular attention and great rigor in selecting models, locations, and objects. Mastery of composition, framing, and light management—whether natural or artificial—was essential for achieving successful shots. Throughout the course, students were encouraged to sharpen their sense of observation and their ability to create images that were both precise and expressive.

Félix Vallotton, un hommage,29.01–25.05.2025,Musée Jenisch, Vevey To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the death of Félix Vallotton, the Musée Jenisch Vevey has invited ECAL Bachelor Fine Arts to pay tribute to this emblematic Swiss artist in a group exhibition. Inspired by Félix Vallotton s engraving practice, which captured the atmosphere of late 19th-century Parisian society, Denis Savary invited students in ECAL s Bachelor Fine Arts program to design a collective exhibition of printed images. To evoke Félix Vallotton s contemporary and typically Parisian spaces for disseminating images and ideas, Morris columns are recreated and scattered throughout the museum. These pieces of street furniture, conceived as modular exhibition devices, house a motley production of printed images, leaflets, posters and butterflies that reflect the cultural offerings and voices of the present day. Like the original models, these columns also provide a multi-functional interior space, serving as a storeroom, public toilet or telephone booth.DATES & SCHEDULE29.01-25.05.2025 Tuesday-Sunday, 11am-6pmVENUEMusée Jenisch Vevey Av. de la Gare 2, 1800 VeveyOPENINGJanuary 28, 2025 at 6.30pmWEBSITEmuseejenisch.ch

Genius Loci - Spirit of the place Genius Loci, or the spirit of the place, refers to the unique identity or essence of a location. In architecture, this principle suggests that the specific characteristics of a place should be reflected and extended in a design. In the case of the second-year graphic design students, they have applied this principle to communication projects focused on promoting or extending the identity of a particular place through design. Their work likely explores how to visually capture and communicate the essence of a space, using graphic design elements that resonate with the architectural features or history of the place. porteous Édition Par De la Petite arvine au dom pérignon Calendriers imprimés à la presse manuelle Par ateliers de l espérence Édition Par Grand Hôtel du cervin Poster Par 25 Édition Par Porteous Identité visuelle Par

ECAL x AGO - Seoul Highlights AGO Lighting has come together with ECAL Bachelor students in Industrial Design, under the guidance of Swiss designer Adrien Rovero, to conceive a collection of lighting installations to be used in public places such as museums, hotel lobbies, coffee bar and so on. Focusing primarily on the spatial aspect of light, our approach was to design lighting structures based on components supplied by AGO and inspired by the fabric of Seoul, rather than creating mere lamps. We believe that lighting defines spaces. The importance of light in every space is essential, which is why we favor lighting as the starting point when building a space. Moreover, most of AGO Lighting collections offer lighting options that can be specified by architects and designers. The challenge we set ourselves was to reimagine the chandelier – an object that lends a distinctive status to a space, while fulfilling its initial purpose of diffusing functional light. ÉVÉNEMENTS LIÉSECAL students had to explore and identify potential landmarks scattered around Seoul many vibrant districts – from Jongno, the historic center of Seoul, and coveted Gangnam, to Mapo and Dasan-ro industrial heritage. Based on their findings, they designed various lighting typologies, taking into account the specific characteristics of each venue and setting; such as a light-pole system inspired by the typical Euljiro District electric street pylons overloaded with cables; a lamp at the crossroads of avant-garde streetwear and futuristic clothing; a planter with an integrated luminaire to highlight plants at the botanical garden; a lighting structure that can host a full table or up to a three-seater sofa underneath its lights; and a high table that bring people together under its gentle light. Presented for the first time at Seochon Lounge, operated by Hanok Heritage Preservation Division of Urban Regeneration Office and Swiss Embassy in Korea in collaboration with Design Press. To explore all the final projects in detail, visit the project website: This project was made possible with the generous support of the Summer University program of the Board of Higher Education (DGES) – State of Vaud.

SWISS DESIGN NETWORK SYMPOSIUM,04–05.12.2024,ECAL, Renens Design disciplines have entered the academic world in Switzerland relatively recently. Swiss design schools have only been required to perform research since the end of the 20th century to be qualified as universities of applied arts. Yet what shape does this research take? Design has become an academic discipline producing original knowledge in traditional formats. However, the discipline has designerly ways of knowing that are yet to be fully recognised and understood. The paradigm of design research, or research through design, supplements new knowledge with the production of new designs, such as prototypes, visualisations, performances, and exhibitions. These new, non-strictly bibliographic formats are relevant for their impact on design schools and audiences. Moreover, AI technologies threaten the scientific paper format as the ultimate form of knowledge transmission. This symposium questions the status of design within the academic system and examines how knowledge is produced by design disciplines. It aims to provide examples of virtuous practices and discuss the relevance of design research as a framework in the medium and long terms. We invited practice- and theory-based contributions anchored in design disciplines and cross- or transdisciplinary approaches that present examples of research through design, discuss methodological and epistemological issues, and offer novel ways of approaching practice-based research.DATES & SCHEDULE04–05.12.2024 Free entry under registrationWEBSITEresearchday.chVENUEECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne Av. du Temple 5 1020 Renens

Inspired by the rural roots of La Ferme des Tilleuls, the artistic duo propose an exhibition that blurs the lines between human and animal, encouraging us to rethink the ties that bind us. With a touch of humor and a critical eye, the creations presented highlight the often disconcerting interactions between our respective worlds. Through objects and photographs, the exhibition questions the artificial transformation of natural elements, recalling our common origin: nature. ECAL LECTURE – MATHIEU LEHANNEUR,08.10.2024,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL ECAL welcomes Mathieu Lehanneur for a lecture on October 08, 2024. There s a word that often comes back to Mathieu Lehanneur s lips: magic. The French designer infuses his work with a touch of the irrational to arouse curiosity, provoke emotion or evoke wonder. Known the world over for his work and his talent for bringing together art, design, science and technology, the creator, born in 1974, is one of the few designers of his generation to embrace so many creative fields. His radically multidisciplinary approach is illustrated by the broad typology of his projects: from objects to architecture, from art to products, from one-off pieces to cutting-edge technologies. Mathieu Lehanneur produces and distributes his creations worldwide via his eponymous brand. Following the inauguration of the Factory, the designer will unveil across the Atlantic his new Pied-à-terre in New York in spring 2024. This exclusive space, located in one of the city s most beautiful skyscrapers, will be the setting for his universe and the dialogue between his latest pieces. Mathieu Lehanneur is a leading figure in the world of design, and winner of the “Grand Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris”. His work can be found in some of the world s most important public and private collections, including the Centre Pompidou and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, as well as the Museum of Modern Art in New York and SF-MoMA in San Francisco.DATES & SCHEDULE08.10.2024 6pm Free entryVENUEIKEA Auditorium, ECAL

ECAL at Swiss Photomonth,03.10.2024,ECAL, Renens ECAL presents “We Do The Rest”, a performative event on the occasion of Swiss Photomonth. “We Do The Rest” is a performative event that questions photographic limits. Together with artist Augustin Lignier, students in the Master of Photography program at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne invite the public to an exceptional evening in their school s monumental hall. From image capture to distribution, “We Do The Rest” explores the notions of effort and bodily constraint in contemporary photographic mechanics. Through a series of sometimes spectacular, sometimes discreet and minimal performances, students in the Master of Photography program at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne question, through their gestures and actions, the structure of image-making. From apnea photography to the confinement of framing, from mental images to the bubbles of social networks, all the projects test photographic limits through the body. The project, directed by artist Augustin Lignier, revisits the radical performances of the 60s in the digital age, when audiences are mainly virtual and relationships reduced to pixels. Through still images and videos, through words, movements and sounds performed for one evening only in the monumental hall of the ECAL, we invite you to experience photography differently, to immerse yourself in these simulations, for real. And it s up to you to press the shutter...VENUEECAL Avenue du Temple 5 1020 RenensDATES & SCHEDULE03.10.2024 6pm–8.45pmWEBSITEswissphotomonth.chART DIRECTION, , HEAD OF PROGRAMMESTUDENTS, , , , , , , , , , , ,

It was therefore only natural to entrust this 6th cuvée to one of the region s emblematic estates, and to invite you to share in its discovery in a moment of conviviality and remembrance. Proceeds from the sale will go towards the Pierre Keller Prize, awarded to a particularly committed ECAL diploma graduate.DATES & SCHEDULEThursday, October 3, 2024 5pm - 8pm Free entry with registrationWEBSITEwww.vaudvins.chTICKETSRegisterVENUEClos de la République Rle du Petit Crêt 11098 Epesses

For the 8th year, the Fondation USM has rewarded a group of students from ECAL s Bachelor s degree in Visual Communication, whose Anthracite project aims to raise public awareness of the effects of light pollution on a sustainable future. The 8th edition of the Bouse de la Fondation USM honors the project by Rebecca Alfandary, Emma Louise Grosu and Phinn Sallin-Mason, students in ECAL s Visual Communication department. Anthracite is a reflection of the night sky, which is no longer as dark as it should be. The project focuses specifically on Swiss biodiversity, and aims to raise awareness of the significant impact of light pollution on pollination. It highlights how artificial light disturbs nocturnal insects, interfering with their natural behaviors and ultimately threatening their existence. Today, 60% of Swiss moths are threatened. The project, which combines powerful images with specific information and solutions, consists of a book, a video and an image installation specially designed for the La Becque garden, where it will be on display from September 19 to 22, 2024.VENUELa Becque | Artist Residency Chemin de La Becque 1 CH-1814 La Tour-de-PeilzDATES & SCHEDULE19.09–22.09.2024 11:00–19:00 Free entryWEBSITEfondationusm.org

BURNING CORSO - Thomas Mailaender In the spring of 2024, Thomas Mailaender and the students of the ECAL Bachelor in Photography entered the ruins of the club with the intention of making it resonate once again. Between archaeology, documentary research, and imaginative speculations, the group of adventurers crafted a surprising exhibition path blending mold and glitter, ashes and glamour. For one night, the Corso was filled with explosive sounds and images in a fiery tribute to the nights of Renens.

Pratique photographique "Extraordinary Daily Commodities": Everyday Objects What if the objects around us were not mere tools, but autonomous entities with their own essence? Inspired by Graham Harman s Object-Oriented Ontology (OOO), this semester invited students to explore objects from a fresh perspective. Freed from the shadow of our consciousness, they take a place equal to that of humans, animals, and plants. Guided by Maxime Guyon, second-year photography students were encouraged to rediscover what "banal" truly means and dive into a reflection on the place and sensitivity of objects in the contemporary world.

Blue jeans This year, a unique workshop invited students to explore the relationship between an object and its image. By delving into the material properties, history, symbolism, and multiple representations of an iconic object, they sought to understand the aura that defines it. The subject of this first edition? The blue jean. From a simple utilitarian garment to a global symbol of style, the blue jean transcends generations and cultures. Throughout the semester, students were tasked with creating a photographic project or video that both questions and celebrates this emblematic object.

Workshop with Lorenzo Vitturi The aim of this workshop is to engage students in a multidisciplinary process that combines photography with sculpture and scenography. To emphasize the importance of the creative process, students are encouraged to use primarily collected and recycled materials, which will need to be transformed and integrated into their visual narrative. The work presented at the end of the workshop will reflect this approach, combining visual results with sculptures and ephemeral installations.

Romain Deriaz – That ll do, Donkey. That ll do. Huit peintures à l huile de colza AOP certifié durable, but in English

Jacobo Zunzunegui – Ermita "Poverty, Silence, and Order," is the title of my thesis in which I explore the intentional simplicity in Western Monasticism. As a continuation, I designed Ermita, three micro cabins situated along the "Camino de Santiago," a pilgrimage route renowned for fostering introspection. Each cabin is constructed using local masonry techniques from three distinct regions, preserving and promoting these rich but declining construction methods. An important feature of these cabins is the integration of all furniture into the fourth wall, made from wood. These compact shelters offer spaces for sleeping, reading, writing, and warming up, while also creating an atmosphere conducive to silence and contemplation — elements that our modern society still deeply needs.

Lorenzo De Bellis – I furnished the den and it seems to have turned out well The fox serves a dual role: a trickster and a symbol of guidance and protection. Initially introduced through a documentary S. watches on TV, the fox is featured in a fox hunting documentary where it is hunted and ultimately is killed. Images from this documentary are taken and projected on panels, forming a sort of theatrical scenography. The realm is the one of the horror. The tryptic is composed of three images representing the hunting scene and developed on the wooden panels using a photosensitive emulsion. The killing of the fox represents the prelude which is simultaneously a foreshadowing. The starting point of the project is a script, which is then used as a score to compose and create the work.

Loris Ciaburri – Lux Vitae Lux Vitae is a feature-length screenplay developed over two years as part of the ECAL/HEAD Master of Cinema program. The project was built from a synopsis, through various treatment versions to a V1 screenplay. Anne Brouillet supervised the writing process throughout. Lux Vitae is a film set in La Chaux-de-Fonds, incorporating the local socio-historical context. The film follows the story of Anica, a polyamorous, pansexual watchmaker who, following an accident, becomes a paraplegic. Her sex life is limited, so she decides to seek assisted suicide and meets Max, an EXIT counsellor. These two people, totally opposed in their sexuality, come together and bond intimately.

Loïs de Goumoëns – Rase Campagne Rase Campagne is a feature-length comedy screenplay project. It tells the story of Elia, a helpful and polite young woman from Vaud, Switzerland, who lives in fear of disturbing... or even worse, of disappointing. One day, a ZAD arrives in her quiet region and through an unfortunate combination of circumstances, we believe she is one of the ZADists! Elia will try to prove the opposite but the adventure will prove difficult when the different forces present try to rally her to their cause. In this story, I am interested in probing Swiss “neutrality” and the consequences of refusing commitment, whether emotional or political. The project is at the V1 stage and is therefore under development.
