ECAL MASTERCLASS – Richard Linklater
30.09.2026
IKEA Auditorium, ECAL

The ECAL Cinema Department is hosting Richard Linklater, a leading figure in contemporary American cinema, for a masterclass open to the public.

Born on July 30, 1960, in Houston, Texas, Richard Linklater is a leading figure in American independent cinema. Deeply rooted in American artistic traditions, he is both a guardian of a rich cinematic heritage and an innovator.

Richard Linklater first gained recognition for his "Before" trilogy — Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004), and Before Midnight (2013) — with the first film winning the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlinale in 1995. His work reflects an interest in the "coming-of-age" genre, in which he excelled with Dazed and Confused (1993) — a film that marked a turning point in the history of the "high school" film — and Boyhood (2014). This film, shot over a period of twelve years with the same cast, has been widely acclaimed and notably won three BAFTAs and three Golden Globes.

This event is presented in collaboration with the Cinémathèque suisse as part of its retrospective on the work of Richard Linklater, running from September 23 to October 31, 2026. The Cinémathèque suisse will welcome the director for the Swiss premiere of Blue Moon (2025) on September 30 at 8:30pm, and for a screening of Boyhood on October 1 at 8:00pm.
