Elise Connor – Searching for Kummo

Diploma project with Jonathan Hares, Guy Meldem

A family. The starting point is the colonisation of India. The only records we have are of the English men who settled there. The Indian women, their culture and identity were lost, erased. The only one we have left is called Kummo. When my grandfather Lionel arrived in London, he moved to Southall. This suburb is now known as “Little India”. The streets and signs are a testament to its cultural mix. This book aims to tell the suspended stories of my family and the visual forms they have taken, and sheds light on the women that have been erased by history.

An addendum for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

GRAPHIC DESIGN

An addendum for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Workshop with Roosje Klap

During this workshop, all students were asked to write an extension article for the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which together formed an addendum for this historical text. It has formed a new part of the temple that hold and protect our humanity. To provide contextual background to the work, students had been reading and discussing an article each day, followed by a daily topic. By the end of the week, an extension of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was celebrated in the form of 20 flags and a collaborative video of 20×20 seconds.

Studio project with Jonas Wandeler

The international typographic style, also known as Swiss style, is a trend in graphic design developed in Switzerland in the 1950s by Armin Hofmann and Emil Ruder. It emphasizes simplicity, readability and objectivity, using sans-serif fonts as the main and structuring element of the design. Among the corporate identities and logos emblematic of the international style are American Airlines (1967, Massimo Vignelli) Fiat, (Jean Reiwald and Armin Vogt), or Swissair (1978, Karl Gerstner). (source: wikipedia) One of the effects of this very widespread (and rather rigid) style is that everything ends up looking the same. During the next semester, you will give a brand an identifiable personality, in the figurative sense of the word.
