«ECAL Graphic Design» exhibition at the D Days Paris,30.05–05.06.2016,Boon, Paris Invited by Eyes on Talents, ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne presents an exhibition of projects realised by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction on the occasion of the D Days Paris (Boon Gallery) from 31 May to 5 June 2016 (cocktail 1 June from 7pm to 11pm). HD Images ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Edited by the Gavillet & Rust studio, the book revolves around a long succession of tracking shots in which projects are not classified in categories, but organised by colour. The exhibition design orchestrated by Adrien Rovero is based on the same concept, allowing a total flexibility of the exhibition. «ECAL Graphic Design» exhibition Monday 30 May from 11am to 5pm for the press and private visits Tuesday 31 May to Sunday 5 June, from 10am to 8pm Cocktail Wednesday 1 June, from 7pm to 11pm Boon 9 Rue de Lesdiguières 75004 Paris http://boonparis.com Book "ECAL Graphic Design" Distributed by JRP|Ringier Collection Anthologies & Art Theory www.jrp-ringier.com Edited by: Angelo Benedetto, Lionel, Bovier, Vincent Devaud (Graphic design), Gilles Gavillet (Graphic design), Alexis Georgacopoulos Authors: Angelo Benedetto, Alexis Georgacopoulos, François Rappo Photography: Philippe Fragnière Technical specifications: Hardcover, 225 x 295 mm, 160 pages, 64 color images, English/French, March 2016 ISBN: 978-3-03764-455-3 Price: CHF 48 / EUR 40 / £ 30 / US 49.95

When Objects Dream Do objects sometimes dream about themselves? What if we could enter their dreams? Virtual reality? Connected objects? On the occasion of the Milan International Furniture Fair 2016, the ECAL students of the Bachelor Media and Interaction Design present a collection of interactive experiments. Headlight & Rocking lamps welcome faces in a bath of light. Inside, a shining ball is guided along a monumental journey.Pump It Up & A connected bicycle pump allows you to interact in a virtual scene. Through this, users influence how balloons are inflated.Look Book & These books keep their pages tightly closed. The binding gives you a glimpse of an unexpected content.Broom Broom & Brooms designed to be handled from a particular angle. Controlling them unveils a universe of staggering proportions.Scalastic & A scale alters the content of an image according to the user s weight. The objects thus represented stretch and twist to reach an elasticity defying all the laws of physics.Eye Drop & Opaque bottles filled with a fleeting digital fluid. Looking through the bottleneck, you can see the magical nature of their content.Tabula Rasa & A table designed for a special “tête-à-tête”. Through the table top one perceives a dramatic drop.Catapulse & A toaster becomes a launching pad for all sorts of objects. Its virtual environment provides a laboratory where experiments combine surprise and contemplation.Melting Hot & This hairdryer stretches beyond its own physical limits. By going up to a high virtual temperature, any object placed in front of the hairdryer instantly begins to change.Metronomy & A metronome controls the pace of a table tennis match. By setting the rhythm, the user can influence the speed of the game.Bloom Vases without flowers, to be viewed from below. Through the gaps, you catch a glimpse of a marvellous vegetal world with unknown species.Browse Air & A fan turns the pages of a book by the force of its blow. This allows the user to view the content of this book in a fun and unusual way.Metricks , & A tape measure allows users to navigate through the depth of a scene. It becomes a fun tool to move across multiple visual compositions of the same image.Ear Cup Teapots filled with liquid sound. Sensitive to handling, these ghostly murmurs reveal echoes of a troubling past.

E15 Marking the twentieth anniversary of modern design classic BACKENZAHN™, e15 invited Master Product Design students of ECAL to develop own interpretations for furniture and accessories utilising the same materials available to the company s co-founder Philipp Mainzer when he conceived the iconic stool. With a focus on sustainability, the BACKENZAHN™ stool was created using wood offcuts from the production of celebrated table BIGFOOT™. For its signature form and detail, seasoned heartwood is used, resulting in characteristic cracks, which make every stool unique. Under the guidance of designer Camille Blin, the students produced a series of 14 objects that reflect everyday functions, such as book shelves, children s toys or paperweights. PUNKT. We are more dependent than ever on electronic devices. There s the fancy phone, watch or tablet, constantly vibrating and begging for attention; but let s not forget the simple tools of everyday life. Those basic objects that help in your daily routines: waking up in the morning, connecting the power plug, or talking to someone with a good old-fashioned landline. How can we make these better, more intuitive, or get rid of any unnecessary functions and simplify both their use and formal language? Thilo Alex Brunner, head of the Master Product Design programme, provides some possible answers to theses questions: “To cooperate with both Petter Neby (Punkt founder/president) and the Jasper Morrison Office for Design (Punkt. art director) means a great deal for us, since we share many ‘Swiss design values such as efficiency and simplicity – but always with an element of surprise.” Under the guidance of designer Augustin Scott de Martinville, the students product ideas are diverse and range from weather stations to wall printers, and torches to projectors. Exhibition "1020 Renens" 1020 Renens Exhibition photo 03 mars – 23 mars 2016 Place du Marché, Renens It s all a question of time. A photograph is shot in a fraction of a second, in one instant. A city changes, it transforms; and to be defined into a new image, it could take years, decades or centuries. During one year, the photographer Nicolas Faure has worked together with the 15 students of the 3rd year photography class at ECAL in Renens. They explored various themes such as the documentary of an African community or the life of teenagers in schools or at the pool as well as the every day life at the office or the intimacy of retired people. The images, assembled in a book as a tribute to Nicolas Faure, are pieces of reality that are sometimes raw and sometimes reworked. They let our mind travel around even when we are still here, in Switzerland, in Renens. 1020 RenensExhibition photo03 mars – 23 mars 2016Place du Marché, RenensIt s all a question of time. The 3 editing students from Ecal/Head, helped by their tutor Jean-Christophe Hym, cut and uncut, paste and unpaste in order to create their own new short films. They then send them to the music composing students from HEMU who create an original soundtrack on this basis. This collaboration ended up into 7 short movies that were screened in the Cinémathèque, while nine other students from HEMU s Jazz section played the newly composed sound tracks.

Vanja Jelic & Rasmus Schoenning – AUTONATOVETO As part of an attempt to unify Bosnia, NATO decided in 1998 to change the licence plates indicating the region into an anonymous combination of letters and numbers. The system was undermined by drivers proud of their ethnicity, who found ways of accessorising their cars with stickers and other insignia. On our journey through Bosnia we collected videos, photography and archive material to document the development of the different identities. This book is a documentation and research into how people responded to the western attempt to unify the diversity within Bosnia. Anne Stock – The Strangers in My Body The Strangers in my Body is an interpretation of the story of Eve, a woman who discovered her multiple personalities with the help of two psychologists. The first case of Multiple Identity Disorder, 1950. Besides the psychological discovery of her disease, the book also shows how she lived with and discovered new personalities over a period of four years. Interviews under hypnosis, case studies about her disease, diary entries as well as a series of portraits with minimal changes complement the story behind the twenty-two different faces of Eve. Lilian Kim – Sajin Sajeon This book is a lexicon of untranslatable Korean words that are related to my origins. Untranslatability happens when it is hard to find a one-to-one equivalence from the source language to the target language. In an effort to get closer to those meanings, I visualize the concepts through archive photographs. The reader can look at each word individually, whereas the book as a whole reveals Korean culture through the history of my family. This collection of 100 words was organized in Korean alphabetical order and came from associations, memories and introspection. ECAL Appartement 50, Cité Radieuse,04–19.07.2015,Cité Radieuse, Marseille In September 2014, twelve Master Product Design students of ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne were invited to reflect on a collection of objects to meet everyday needs in the Cité Radieuse in Marseille. The outcome of this research is being displayed as part of an exhibition staged in Apartment 50 from 4 to 19 July 2015. A 52-page publication produced by the Art Direction Master students will be issued concurrently. HD PICTURES Apartment 50 was restored by two enthusiasts, Jean-Marc Drut and Patrick Blauwart, as close as possible to its original condition. Listed as a historical monument, the venue occasionally hosts exhibition projects. World-renowned designers have already exhibited there, such as Jasper Morrison, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic and Pierre Charpin. Thus, under the direction of Thilo Alex Brunner, head of the Master Product Design at ECAL, and of ECAL professor Augustin Scott de Martinville, a series of objects was produced over one semester by the Product Design Master students. The project began in September 2014 with a three-day workshop in the Cité Radieuse, allowing students to experience life in the building. Based on their various observations, they created objects to “inhabit” Apartment 50, focusing particularly on the following features: The specific climate of the apartments: the fan creates an air flow on the mezzanine and the cushions are designed to fit both on the living room s indoor parapets and on the loggias tables. The flexibility of interior spaces: the large rotating lamp serves to light either the dining room or the living room in turn, while the small model can be used either on a desk or a bedside table. Tours of Apartment 50 which take place regularly: the carpet, crafted with the support of the Ruckstuhl AG manufacture in Langenthal, displays a map showing how the Cité Radieuse blended in with its environment at the time of construction, while the “unit” metre provides a simple tool to explain the Modulor system. Life in the communal areas, especially the roof terrace which serves as a meeting place: the chair and folding table are designed to facilitate migration from the living room of the apartment, while the picnic box allows to comfortably carry everything you for an aperitif. In addition to the projects around the above-mentioned specificities, half a dozen other objects can be discovered on the spot or in the related publication. In March 2015, the students of the ECAL Master Art Direction were invited to attend a four-day workshop to experience and document everyday life in the building with a view to editing a publication. Through the architectural spectrum across 52 pages, this editorial project includes portraits of residents or fictional characters inspired by the Modulor system, as well as still lifes and original typefaces echoing the building s proportions.

Exhibition Life is a Bed of Roses (un roman) From Wednesday, May 27, 2015 to Saturday, July 4, 2015. A project devised by Stéphanie Moisdon , with the participation of the Master s course students and teachers. In the form of a Bildingsroman (“education novel”) about imagination, or about imagination of education, the exhibition is the venue for a theatre and a choir, a set, and appearances of forms, objects and characters. The evolving path of this “education novel” has been gradually formed, over a whole year, around an Alain Resnais film, and the unfurled memory of Comte Forbek s castle, in the spirit of mediaeval times, the spirit of craftsmen of all times. For several pens to write this light and modern tale of youth, it was important to rely on a few oblique strategies, and travel between experience and immaturity, talent and craft, between personal predispositions and collective ideal. Workshops led by Valentin Carron , Sylvie Fleury , Tristan Garcia , Stéphane Kropf , Fabian Marti , in collaboration with Lucile Dupraz . Scenography realized by Denis Savary with Ruben Valdez , and opening credits video by Lisa Stein . With works by Jérôme Baccaglio, Tina Braegger, Lena Brudieux, Francesco Cagnin, Lucas Erin, Jean Etchevers-Bourgois, Arthur Fouray, Antoine Goudard, Thea Govorchin, Emanuele Marcuccio, Francesco Nazardo, Giulio Scalisi, Tomaso Semenzato, Konstantinos Sotiriou, Lisa Stein, and Linda Voorwinde . #Photobooth The ECAL students of the Bachelor Photography and Master Product Design present a series of interactive installations showing how mobile phone cameras and the selfie phenomenon changed the way we look at ourselves. How can one create objects and installations around the portrait theme in this digital age? What means are available to disseminate these? How can one make visitors interact with the exhibits and turn viewers into the main actors in the exhibition? Over a semester, 1st year Master Product Design students and 2nd year Bachelor Photography students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne worked on these issues with the aim to present their findings as part of an exhibition. Under the watchful eye of Vincent Jacquier, Head of the Visual Communication Department, of designer Camille Blin and photographer Nicolas Haeni, the students were able to understand, using various approaches, how current – material or virtual – technology alters our traditional relationship with portraits, be they selfies or pictures of others. Using modern media as well as more run-of-the-mill devices, exhibition visitors are invited to directly experiment the processes imagined by the students, allowing them to discover new interactive and fun ways of having their picture taken 3.0 style. Based on this principle, the exhibition stages an installation playing with the visitor s shadow; the combination of a mirror and scanner to create realistic or distorted self-portraits; an image which is altered through song; a tribute to famous departed designers through a system of filters placed in front of a smartphone; analogically merged faces; a 180° portrait produced by a range of reflective surfaces; a trompe-l œil projection on a mask; a family of objects able to hijack the smartphone camera function to create original images; a poetic reinterpretation Instagram; and finally, self-portraits captured by the photo itself. Process of improvisation: performance and situated action Performance and situated action, from social sciences to artistic practices This transdisciplinary research project aims to elaborate a critical and collaborative reflexion, between social sciences and artistic practices (i.e. visual arts, performance arts, music and film) upon the function of improvisation, as a theoretical model and a creative process, related to situated action and performance. Based on recent researches in social sciences around improvisation through different modes of actions (conversations, urgency situations, etc.), the stakes is to understand how artistic models inform social theories and render legible their interpretative process. At the same time, the ambition of this research project is to demonstrate that these same models are at the core of artistic practices and can shade a new light on the creative process. During the first year, the research resolves around four workshops-laboratories led by an artist and involving Bachelor students in each art school: Oscar Gomez Mata at the HETSR, Véronique Goël at ECAL, Yan Duyvendak at HEAD and Rudy Decelière at HEMU. During the second year, the workshop-laboratory will be led in common with the four art schools and will take shape through a collaborative research and experimental form, presented to the audience at the end of the project. A colloquium in May 2015 and a special issue of the anthropological magazine Gradhiva will conclude this research project.Main applicantManufacture - HETSR, Frédéric Plazy, with Serge Margel and Claire de RibaupierreCo-applicantsFrançois Bovier (ECAL) Christophe KihZ (HEAD – Genève) Angelika Güsewell with Bastien Gallet (HEMU)Periodseptember 2013 – september 2015Supported bySwiss National Fund (SNF)

Jean-Vincent Simonet – Maldoror In 1869, aged 23, Isidore Ducasse published Les Chants de Maldoror, a cutting-edge book praising youth revolt, blasphemy and the victory of dream over reality. My work is a rendition of the original book, divided into six booklets. This new illustrated version is a revival of this literary enigma, transforming the classic novel into a contemporary editorial object. Each of the six booklets offers a thematic approach related to the universe of Les Chants de Maldoror. The graphic design and different typologies of pictures give each booklet its own and strong personality. The literary blasphemy turns into a tribute. Apian Bees, architecture, and Science Fiction – what could these three apparently unconnected universes have in common? The first is motivated by my grandfather who is himself a beekeeper. Additionally, I have a strong interest in science fiction, specifically stories that describe dystopic, totalitarian societies of the future. Through these interests, I discovered the 1998 book The Beehive Metaphor, published by Juan A. Ramirez. In his work, he examines how bees have influenced our architectures. My pictures depict hybrid constructions ranging from traditional hives to concrete bricks to architecture. Those subjects are raised to the level of sculpture, yet their forms are too obviously related to their function to avoid the notion of a precise goal. Tessa Donati – Viwo Sound, illustration and construction are the key elements of the Viwo box, which contains 16 little wood blocks prepared to disclose six amusing illustrations. By placing these living cubes in the right place it will be possible to discover the supporting role of sound in solving the puzzle. This first game encourages children to examine the shapes of the objects, stimulates them to recreate the images accurately and increases their listening skills. To get started, just touch the word Viwo. The lid of the box and the available cards function as an amazing game! The senses involved are mainly touch, hearing and sight. In planning and building this box, my aim was to combine the traditional qualities of a wood game with those of modern games that capture children s attention.

Messe This photography book explores five Swiss fairs. The artificial textures, the objects and the stands are the heart of the project. Human beings are squashed by blurred, pixilated and scaled effects. The amount of pictures is huge and the layout is dense in order to give the reader a feeling of immersion into this artificial world, close to claustrophobia. In my life, I have really struggled between fascination with and rejection of this luxury world you can meet in Baselworld for example. And this diploma project was a way to explore that in a totally different manner. This photography book explores five Swiss fairs. Agathe Zaerpour & Philippine Chaumont – Uzuri Ubichi For this project, we both wanted to use different mediums – graphic design, photography, video, fashion. We also wanted to base our diploma on reality, and to talk about fashion in countries where it is not as documented as here yet. So we travelled to Nairobi, to meet some of the Kenya Fashion Week designers, to make an inventory of fashion there, and of what we found around it. This book compiles collaborations with those designers and documentary folders. From this duality results a project which oscillates between Fashion and Report, Uzuri Ubichi, Beauty and Rawness. Rehearsal - Selected at IDFA (International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam) 2014 - Selected at International Clermont-Ferrand Shortfilm Festival 2015 Synopsis A choir teacher, pupils of the Lyon Conservatory. Their face-to-face confrontation: a rehearsal, the second to last before the end of the year show.
