ECAL inaugurates its new Print Centre,02.02.2017,ECAL, Renens Thanks to Canton of Vaud and to generous support from institutions in the region, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has inaugurated its new Print Centre at the heart of its campus in Renens, offering new state-of-the-art equipment to its students. These premises can be discovered during the ECAL Open Days 2017 on Friday 3 February (afternoon) and Saturday 4 February (all day). ECAL is constantly rewriting the book. The spaces made available in June 2016 the ECAL building by the Ateliers de la Ville de Renens have served to establish a unique Print Centre dedicated to students, which brings together, over close to 900 sq.m, a printing press (offset press and binding equipment), plotters, inkjet and laser printers as well as screen printing, lithography and etching workshops. Transformed this summer, fitted out at the end of the year, and finally equipped with new machines, including a Heidelberg 5-colour offset press, these new premises are now fully operational. But why develop a printing house and related techniques in an all-digital era? The main answer is the explanation of the acronym ECAL: Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne. The primary vocation of a SCHOOL is to teach know-how, to put fundamentals into practice, to encourage experiments and to provide skills in specific techniques. As such, a printing house is a great educational tool which is essential for a complete top-quality education. An art school without a quasi-professional printing house is not really an art school. The 600 ECAL students make this place their home to create or enhance their works. Graphic artists and photographers produce posters, magazines or books, industrial designers lay out portfolios, artists create editions, filmmakers print their posters. From an institutional point of view, all ECAL exhibition invitations, as well as numerous books and catalogues, are printed in-house, thus promoting the students achievements, but also highlighting the excellence of education in our Canton and region. Without a high-level printing facility on its premises, ECAL would not be what it is today - one of the world s top schools of art and design. And what would ART be without printing techniques and paper? Not much... No paintings, no books, no posters... Not to mention the contribution of techniques such as lithography, screen printing or etching, which are part of the history of art and which ECAL continues to develop, because this know-how allows widening the various media and promotes diversity in creativity. Inhabiting and Interfacing the Cloud(s) The design research I&IC (Inhabiting and Interfacing the Cloud(s), explores the creation of counter-proposals to the current expression of “Cloud Computing”, particularly in its forms intended for private individuals and end users (“Personal Cloud”). Inhabiting and Interfacing the Cloud(s) is to offer an alternative point of view, a critical appraisal as well as an “access to tools” about this iconic infrastructure of our modernity and its user interfaces, because to date their implementation has followed a logic chiefly of technical development, mainly governed by corporate interests, and continues therefore to be paradoxically envisioned as a purely functional, centralized setup. However, the Personal Cloud holds a potential that is largely untapped in terms of design, novel uses and territorial strategies. Through its cross-disciplinary approach that links interaction design, the architectural and territorial dimensions as well as ethnographic studies, our project aims at producing alternative models resulting from a more contemporary approach, notably factoring in the idea of creolization (theorized by E. After graduating from the ECAL Bachelor Fine Arts with honours in 2016, he made these paintings during his recent stay in China. ECAL x Vacheron Constantin at SIHH,16–20.01.2017,Palexpo, Geneva On the occasion of the 27th Salon international de la haute horlogerie (SIHH) in Geneva from 16 to 20 January 2017, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents a new project for Vacheron Constantin. During a workshop led by the designers of Studio Formafantasma, the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship worked on the theme of astronomy and telling the time, in particular as related to Celestial Mechanics. Open to the public Friday 20 January 2017 The students were tasked with drawing inspiration from three ancestral instruments whose common denominator is the relationship between the Sun and the Earth (the armillary sphere, the astrolabe and the astronomical ring) and revisiting them in a conceptual, contemporary manner. To provide them with a better understanding of the Maison Vacheron Constantin and the world of Celestial Mechanics, students were invited to the Manufacture s headquarters for a week-long introduction, and subsequently to the Geneva History of Science Museum for a “customised” visit. Drawing on these inspirations and their extensive research, the students studied various means of representing time: using the sun to tell the time, illustrating the position of the stars in the sky or identifying the time the sun sets and rises by using an exact date and place. Throughout the development phase, the students worked in multicultural teams. They were accompanied and guided by teams from ECAL, Vacheron Constantin and the Italian designers from Studio Formafantasma, Simone Farresin and Andrea Trimarchi. The six different objects born of this adventure have in common technical challenges, creativity and a quest for excellence. Six different objects were born of this adventure, and have in common the technical challenge, creativity and a quest for excellence.THE IMPRINT OF TIME Sunbeams hit the magnifying glass and leave marks on thermal paper. Fascinated by the light spot from the sun indicating the time on the astronomical ring, we wanted to create an object that would exalt this natural light and the energy it exudes. The phenomenon of the concentration of light with a magnifying glass was an instant source of inspiration. The light spot becomes so hot it burns the material against which it collides, leaving the mark behind. The paper rings thus become evidence of the passing days and retain the marks of sunny days, while leaving the white of cloudy days unmarked. Maud Laurent (France), Jiwon Choi (South Korea), Naoto Suzuki (Japan) GE462615 The engraved plaque illustrates the movement of the stars in real time, while the sound is the result of waves emitted by the same stars. This visual and sound device inspired by the armillary sphere is a direct link with the sky and infinity. It is an invitation to a new way of telling the time which is based on the positioning of the zodiac constellations, in sidereal time which differs from the earthly temporal system. The engraved plaque indicates the position of the stars in the sky in real time for a given place (Geneva) and does a complete rotation every 23 hours and 56 minutes, which corresponds to the time that it takes the earth to rotate on its own axis (a sidereal day). With the help of French astrophysicist Sylvie Vauclair and composer Claude-Samuel Lévine, the device is accompanied by sound obtained from waves emitted by the visible stars. Once assembled and transformed, these waves create a symphony that comes straight from space. Jenna Kaes (France), Renaud Meunier (Belgium), Weiji Wang (China) HORIZON An artificial light representing the sun can be moved around a graduated ring to indicate sunrise and sunset times on a given date in a given place. Based on the armillary sphere, the project aims to reinterpret this antique instrument and to indicate the sunrise and sunset times throughout the year. In the Middle Ages, people thought that the earth was flat and in the centre of the universe, and that the sun rotated around the earth. We started with this belief to turn the horizon into a flat disc to which we added a sundial. The latter enables one to see the light moving slowly throughout the day in order to make the object simple and easy to understand. Clément Beaugé (France), Jungyou Choi (South Korea) DAWN AND DUSK A mechanical system that indicates the time the sun sets and rises on a given date in a given place, while a sparkling dot representing the sun gives the hour in real time. Deliberately positioned somewhere between a watch dial and an astrolabe, our concept consists of two mechanisms: the first, driven by a motor, tells the time in real time through a polished brass dot depicting the path of the sun. The second is a manual mechanism that provides a visual illustration of the night using a set of metal cut-outs that obscure the dial. These two pieces overlap or move apart according to the time of year. In winter, as the nights are longer, the dial is largely covered, while during summer, the dial is only slightly obscured. Thanks to this simple mechanism, sunrise and sunset times can be indicated in a very visual, educational manner. Martin Bolo (France), Hyewon Lim (South Korea), Bongon Koo (South Korea) DANCE OF THE STARS The glass disc on which a map of the stars is engraved makes it possible to determine the exact position of the constellations on a given date. Using the information provided by the astrolabe, we focused on the indication of the stars in the sky. We wanted to deconstruct this traditional metal object so as to endow it with a certain lightness reminiscent of the celestial dome. A silk panel representing the sky is hung over a rack. The latter is held to the ground by a rock, a metaphorical representation of the earth and gravity. By sliding the circle of the stars on which the months are written, one can align the date chosen with the time when one wishes to observe the stars. By superposing the layers, the stars engraved on the glass circle appear on the partly dyed blue silk. Clarisse Mordret (France), Einat Kirschner (Israel) EQUILIBRIUM An engraved stone representing a city acts as a counterweight to create the exact latitudinal position on the mechanism, thereby thus making it possible to see the exact time with the help of sunbeams. We based this on the archetypal pendulum clock that works using stones as counterweights to balance the mechanism. Using this reference, we wanted to reinterpret the astronomical ring in a more poetic version, thus telling the time with the help of a natural element – stone. This weight, attached to the end of the device creates an exact angle (latitude) on the mechanism. After adjusting the day and the month on a graduated tube, one can tell the time by the sunrays. «ECAL Graphic Design» in Hong Kong,30.11.2016–25.03.2017,Experience Centre, Hong Kong In collaboration with the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) and the Institute of Vocational Education (Lee Wai Lee), ECAL presents an exhibition of projects created by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction. Images HD ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. Son travail, qui couvre des champs de connaissance très divers, se nourrit des lois inhérentes de chaque système auquel il s intéresse, dans le but de trouver leur point de rupture. En 2005, il remporte avec Michel Gondry et Charlie Kaufman l Oscar du meilleur scénario original pour son synopsis de Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Where is Rocky II ? Senior Living Lab The Senior Living Lab is a laboratory dedicated to the quality of life and welfare of seniors and their caregivers. The Senior Living Lab laboratory s aim is to involve seniors in their life context to the creation and development of new products, services and practices with high added value. It brings together professionals in the fields of health, design, engineering and management and is open to associations, companies, researchers, students and more generally to anyone interested by this topic. Over a period of 2 years, the project aimed to : Build bridges with the different actors of the community, associations and politics. Establish co-creation activities by achieving three concrete projects in the areas of mobility, food and communication. Depuis près de vingt-cinq ans, Philippe Faucon a réalisé une douzaine de films dont Muriel fait le désespoir de ses parents, Samia ou encore La Désintégration. Avec son dernier long-métrage sorti en 2015, Fatima, Philippe Faucon a remporté notamment le Prix Louis-Delluc et les Césars de la Meilleure adaptation et du Meilleur film 2016. "Walk with Pierre Hardy" exhibition,11–13.11.2016,Paris Photo On the occasion of Paris Photo, Pierre Hardy & the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne present the exhibition "Walk with Pierre Hardy". Fifteen iconic models by the designer were visually reinterpreted by the students of Bachelor Photography under the direction of Philippe Jarrigeon. Additionally, a luxurious special publication marks the occasion. To be discovered from 11 to 13 November 2016 (10 am to 7 pm) at the Pierre Hardy boutique (9-11 Place du Palais-Bourbon). At ECAL, my role was very different from that of a teacher coaching the students on their work – as I myself was the subject I knew the stuff inside out! Just show me half a centimetre of a heel and I instantly recognise the model which I created”, says Pierre Hardy. The ECAL Bachelor Photography students thus worked on various collections produced by the Parisian designer in the past fifteen years in order to give them a new visual interpretation. Photographer Philippe Jarrigeon comments on the method he chose to conduct this workshop at ECAL: “Together with Pierre Hardy s team we selected fifteen pairs of shoes in the archives – a purely practical decision which allowed us to keep the models as long as we wanted at ECAL. In addition, this allowed students to free themselves from seasonal trends. At the beginning of the workshop in October 2015, each student got a model on which to work by drawing lots”. This project allowed the students to question the relationship between photography and footwear, and by extension to confront the interconnection between photography and fashion. Milo Keller, Head of Photography at ECAL, observes that “Students, working without any business constraints in that case, are less formatted than a professional and therefore often offer unexpected approaches”. The results are indeed surprising and offbeat, sometimes even provocative or poetic, but always treat the original creations with respect. Collaboration with Petit h The students of the ECAL / Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne s Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship were invited to revive the "sleepy" materials and objects that make up the impressive collection of petit h. Based on previous experiences with Hermès and petit h, the project began with a meeting with artisans in the workshops in Pantin, near Paris. Guided by the London designer Bethan Laura Wood, who perfectly succeeded in inspiring his energy and colorful world, the students designed fun and surprising objects. Among all the proposals presented, two series of containers were particularly attractive. For the first, inspired by the exquisite corpse, the lids of the different boxes turn, thus mixing the heads and bodies of the animal shapes cut out of the silk. The second refers to a vegetable garden: the pompon or the leaf, which emerge from the lid, recall the vines of plants growing underground. By pulling on this projection, the user discovers a vegetable hidden in the box.

Book and exhibition «Un paysage de la modernité»,12.10.2016,Gallery l elac, ECAL «Un paysage de la modernité», premier titre de la collection «Les Cahiers de l Ouest» (Editions Infolio), propose une étude réalisée par Bruno Marchand, professeur à l Ecole polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), qui montre combien l Ouest lausannois porte la marque du Mouvement moderne, notamment dans ses ensembles bâtis et son architecture du logement. Dans le cadre de cet ouvrage (réalisé graphiquement par l Atelier Poisson), les étudiants de 2e année en Bachelor Photographie de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, sous la direction de Matthieu Gafsou, ont offert leurs regards photographiques sur cette thématique. «Les étudiants ont reçu pour mission de réaliser des images personnelles, faisant découvrir les lieux dans leur usage. Certains auront parfois élargi quelque peu le territoire de leurs investigations photographiques, non par commodité mais bien pour rendre compte du point de vue de l habitant et de son rapport vécu au quartier. Concrètement, chaque étudiant s est vu attribuer une zone, délimitée très précisément, regroupant un ou plusieurs ensembles de logements. Pendant presque un an, ils ont dû se soumettre à la contrainte de se limiter à cette portion de territoire. Il s agit d un des exercices les plus difficiles de la photographie: rendre exotique ce qui nous est tellement familier qu on ne le regarde plus. Ce d autant plus que la zone couverte est très petite et ne permet pas d échappatoires stylistiques, de subterfuges formels. Le banal peut devenir pittoresque, sublime ou beau. Tout est question de point de vue. Et c est bien en mettant en œuvre une telle démarche que l on développe son langage. Que l on apprend à faire une photographie qui n est plus seulement soumise à la magnificence du sujet mais qui participe aussi de la fabrication de ce dernier. C est à mon avis lorsque l on comprend cette nuance que l on devient un véritable photographe. Pour parvenir à saisir autre chose que la stricte surface du monde, il faut s y plonger. Rencontrer les gens, oser, recommencer, revenir, encore et encore. L exercice apprend la lutte permanente de la création contre l usure ou l égarement. Il permet aussi de découvrir que le métier de photographe peut difficilement se pratiquer seul. Ce projet a abouti à autant de séries qu il y a d étudiants. Quinze séries avec leur cohérence propre, leur esthétique, leur histoire. Pour les besoins de ce cahier thématique, il a fallu faire en sorte que les visions de chacun se rencontrent. Plutôt que d amoindrir les photographies, cette diversité des approches et des styles en dit beaucoup, me semble-t-il, sur ces quartiers résidentiels discrets, si typiques de la Suisse. Workshop in Berlin To celebrate the launch of a new master s degree in photography at ECAL in 2016, the first year students worked together with Taiyo Onorato and Milo Keller (Head of Photography at ECAL) in Berlin for one week to produce a book about the city s architecture in turmoil. Using the wide streets of Berlin as a blank canvas, the students were encouraged to interpret rather than document the spaces of the vast metropolis and build their own story of its distinctive character. The picturesdepict the shift that Berlin has undergone in the past, from the perspective of unexpected encounters, vacant spaces, countless construction sites and shared revelations. The book was printed and bound at Helmut Newton Foundation during the C/O Berlin Book Days, 29.9 – 2.10.2016. «ECAL Graphic Design» in China,23.09–13.11.2016,Beijing & Shanghai Invited by Pro Helvetia Shanghai, ECAL presents an exhibition of projects created by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction on the occasion of the Beijing Design Week in Beijing, West Bund Art and Design Fair in Shanghai, and then travel to Hong Kong Design Institute (more information soon). HD Images ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Edited by the Gavillet & Rust studio, the book revolves around a long succession of tracking shots in which projects are not classified in categories, but organised by colour. The book compiles the ten first editions of documenta at the Museum Fridericianum, from 1955 to 1997. We approached this work as an archeology of the archive, with different stratum of research and highlights. Vincent Sauvaire – Perpetuel The idea behind this project is to bring together the world of graphic design and clockmaking through typographical design: to create letters specifically for the watch face and the circle that is defined by the hands. The aim is to give movement to the face through letters. Each number is drawn as a symbol according to its position and the angle corresponding to its individual line. Any chosen face can then be adapted to each complications. To conclude, this project enabled me to focus on the art of detail and the graphic designer s status in the world of clock-making. Hermann Eidenbenz Teaching Graphic Design Hermann Eidenbenz (1902–1992) was one of the first professionals in Switzerland to describe himself as a graphic designer. From the 1910s to the 1950s, he was involved in graphic design education in Zurich, Magdeburg, Basel and Brunswick, first as a student and later as a teacher. Starting from a broad research on historical type design education, the project culminated in the discovery of two consistent convolutes of didactic materials. A collection of glass plates documenting a lettering course in Magdeburg, Germany (1926–1932) and a set of student works reflecting a course in basic design exercises in Basel (1940–1943), both held by Eidenbenz as a teacher. Heejae Yang – Actual, Diploma Project by Heejae Yang Actual is a sans serif font family inspired by the purity fo geometric shapes. One of the drawbacks of early geometric typefaces, such as those from the bauhaus, was their defective readability in small sizes due to the fact that they were made with a merely formal and conceptual approach. Whereas, if the fonts were revised, they could easily lose their original geometric character. The project aims to produce a typeface that works for body texts while still maintaining a geometric flavour. To achieve this, the optical corrections of the absolute geometric shapes were reduced to a minimum. Actual is a sans serif font family inspired by the purity fo geometric shapes. DSGDM Digital Strategies in Genre-Defining Magazines Although the world of printed matter is undergoing in-depth changes, one still rarely finds creative heads equally at ease with the languages and stakes inherent to both digital and analogue media. Based on this observation, the initial issues to be addressed through this research are as follows: how can the know-how and aesthetic sensitivities usually involved in producing printed magazines be translated for digital interfaces? The questions asked in the project will be addressed through a series of workshops and interviews. If you only had 50 things to furnish your apartment, what would they be and look like? In the prospect of the Democratic Design Days in Älmhult, Sweden, IKEA s Design Manager, Marcus Engman, and its design team invited 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design students of ECAL to rethink basics, fundamental pieces of furniture and accessories for life and work at home - flexible and functional products - with a strong focus on affordability and sustainability. “Together with IKEA s design team, we tried to give the students a real taste of how it is to work with the largest furniture brand in the world: visiting their headquarters in Sweden and bringing them to factories in Poland. Something that only a handful of designers will experience in their career” says ECAL Head of Bachelor Industrial Design Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard. Under the guidance of designer Nicholai Wiig-Hansen, familiar with IKEA s values and work processes, the students produced a range of 50 essentials across all product areas, from chairs to cutlery, and textiles to lightings. As part of the design process, Wiig-Hansen wanted the students to work as a group, discover themselves, their strengths and weaknesses, and know where they can be valuable in a team. Nicholai Wiig-Hansen explains: “IKEA is about group effort, and I think teamwork is about designers leaving their ego aside for a moment and pushing together as a whole. Maxime Pillonel s challenge is to make us see, hear and, above all, make his handicap an expressive force, just like his hero. The distortion of the sounds, the precision of the deaf dialogues, the sustained rhythm of the editing, the overkill of characters, each one more out of place than the other, make this comedy a fable on the difference. To get out of town, they hijack a young girl s vehicle. She ends up following them as they flee. Comment This title mixes literary reminiscences as the film does cinematographic references. As a spectator, one has the impression of never being in front of a narrative taken in hand and led to a good port, but rather that of assisting to the quickly tired hatching of a possible story. Nothing is completely accomplished and yet everything appears. The film is not that of its heroes (locked in their cage of fear, desire, disgust, innocence, their cage of childhood in too large bodies) but is another character (the fourth) of the improbable encounter between petty thieves and a bourgeoise. And it is a clever way of Hugo to tell us nothing of the difficulty of jealousy between two brothers, of the desire that wanders, of the defeat of bare feet against the mechanics of drones, but to make us feel, hear, experience them. Of adolescence (no longer an easy theme for a graduation film but a sort of obligatory subject) Fedor is proof of this through the test. And she does not understand that one can grow old, fall in love, move away from childhood to make one s own life like Dino who comes back to introduce the woman he loves. The resolutely poetic point of view of the script met the very beautiful incarnation of its young actress who knew how to magnify it, to go beyond it. Curiously, the character of the ghost, Valentina, is the most alive of the film. She lives an eternal present, a demanding adolescence that each shot manages to render with sensitivity. «ECAL Graphic Design» exhibition at the D Days Paris,30.05–05.06.2016,Boon, Paris Invited by Eyes on Talents, ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne presents an exhibition of projects realised by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction on the occasion of the D Days Paris (Boon Gallery) from 31 May to 5 June 2016 (cocktail 1 June from 7pm to 11pm). HD Images ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Having studied graphic design at ECAL, Ian Party and Maxime Buechi founded Swiss Typefaces in 2003, a company that designs typefaces that can be purchased from their online shop. They create complete alphabetic character sets that are comprised of about 800 different signs, which in part are composed of upper and lower case letters along with numerals. These two friends have known each other since their teenage years, 14 years old to be exact, they used to graffiti the streets of Lausanne together. Always knowing they wanted to be independent to create their art, they established themselves under the name B&P Typefoundry and gained some notoriety as a great force in the type design world when creating some custom typefaces for publications and companies like Vogue, L Officiel, Esquire, SangBleu, Mugler and more recently SKY TV and the City of Stockholm. As of 2011, Emmanuel Rey who also studied graphic design at ECAL joined the team and is now co-CEO and design director, with Ian Party. The company was renamed Swiss Typefaces the same year. «Made in Hong Kong» exhibition,28.04–27.05.2016,Gallery l elac, ECAL A l occasion d un programme d échanges entre l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne et le Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI), quatre diplômés de l ECAL ont pu se rendre à Hong Kong pour une résidence de cinq mois de septembre2 015 à janvier 2016. Du 29 avril au 27 mai 2016 à la Galerie l elac, ils présentent une sélection des projets qu ils ont réalisés durant ce séjour. Iris Andreadis, diplômée en Bachelor en Design Industriel, a travaillé sur un lit superposé pour des unités d habitation de 5m2 en collaboration avec DOMAT, un duo d architectes locaux. Elle a développé également une ligne de vêtements dont les formes simples et amples s inspirent des tenues utilitaires et des femmes Hakka. Pour finir, elle présente une projection d images faites lors de randonnées dans la ville. Laurence Kubski, diplômée en Bachelor Design Graphique et en Master Art Direction, propose ici trois projets photographiques: une série de portraits à laquelle a été appliquée le système de retouche très largement utilisé par les jeunes Hongkongais, une série d images d animaux tropicaux vivants tels qu ils sont vendus en vrac sur les marchés et quelques points de vue sur l architecture de cette ville fascinante. Hansel Schloupt, diplômé en Master de Design de Produit, a travaillé sur le développement de prototypes et l élaboration de jouets grâce à la collaboration étroite avec différents industriels situés à Hong Kong. ECAL x e15 in Milan,12–17.04.2016,e15 Milan Showroom On the occasion of the Milan International Furniture Fair 2016, from 12th to 17th April at the e15 Milan Showroom, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents projects realised by 1st year Master Product Design Students in collaboration with German furniture brand e15. Under the guidance of designer Camille Blin, the students developed 14 furniture concepts celebrating the company s iconic BACKENZAHN™ stool. HD Images Brochure with explanations Marking the twentieth anniversary of modern design classic BACKENZAHN™, e15 invited Master Product Design students of ECAL to develop own interpretations for furniture and accessories utilising the same materials available to the company s co-founder Philipp Mainzer when he conceived the iconic stool. With a focus on sustainability, the BACKENZAHN™ stool was created using wood offcuts from the production of celebrated table BIGFOOT™. For its signature form and detail, seasoned heartwood is used, resulting in characteristic cracks, which make every stool unique. Under the guidance of designer Camille Blin, the students produced a series of 14 objects that reflect everyday functions, such as book shelves, children s toys or paperweights.
