«When Objects Dream» exhibition in Milan,12–17.04.2016,Spazio Orso 16, Milan Do objects sometimes dream about themselves? What if we could enter their dreams? Virtual reality? Connected objects? On the occasion of the Milan International Furniture Fair 2016, from 12th to 17th April at the Spazio Orso 16, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents a collection of interactive experiments developed by Bachelor Media and Interaction Design students. HD Images Brochure with explanations Video Ever since they appeared, we have been worshipping the objects around us while being extremely demanding of them. What if the roles were reversed for once? Instead of asking objects to make us dream, why don t we consider their own dreams? Premonitory dreams that anticipate a possible future of objects? In this exhibition presented by the Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students of ECAL, a series of objects offers visitors a rather unsettling experience. In order to uncover its subtleties they will have to learn to adjust to the objects on display so as to perceive each piece s personality. In a certain way, this project as a whole leads us to question the future of familiar objects. How does our relationship to them changes as they become capable of making a statement about their own existence, interact by using onboard sensors and grow increasingly connected to our communication networks? Do I see my toothbrush differently knowing that it records each movement in my mouth and therefore displays a form of consciousness? As part of the experiments developed for this exhibition, the students created two families of objects. The first integrates a virtual reality principle which allows you to literally look inside the objects, to immerse yourself for a time into a parallel reality which objects let you glimpse at. The second is made up of objects whose basic function is augmented or transformed through activity sensors. This is their way of making us reflect on the future of so-called smart or connected objects. The objects on display, whose function is but fiction, tell their own story, encouraging us to see and use them differently. In a playful manner, they lead us to rethink some of our distrust in the face of change and as regards, their future. How can we make these better, more intuitive, or get rid of any unnecessary functions and simplify both their use and formal language? Thilo Alex Brunner, head of the Master Product Design programme, provides some possible answers to theses questions: “To cooperate with both Petter Neby (Punkt founder/president) and the Jasper Morrison Office for Design (Punkt. art director) means a great deal for us, since we share many ‘Swiss design values such as efficiency and simplicity – but always with an element of surprise.” Under the guidance of designer Augustin Scott de Martinville, the students product ideas are diverse and range from weather stations to wall printers, and torches to projectors. Il a remporté de nombreuses récompenses dont le Prix suisse de design en 2003, 2011, 2012, le TDC – Type Directors Club en 2009, Die schönsten deutschen Bücher en 2013 ainsi que la médaille d or lors de Best Book Design from all over the World en 2003, 2010, 2014 pour des ouvrages consacrés à l architecture, dont il est un passionné. Parmi ses travaux les plus marquants, on peut relever la communication visuelle de la 5e Biennale de Berlin pour l Art Contemporain en 2008, celle du Musée d Art Moderne de Varsovie depuis 2009 ou encore les monographies de Herzog & de Meuron. Il a récemment été nommé pour réaliser l identité visuelle et le catalogue de la documenta 14, qui aura lieu à Kassel et Athènes en 2017. En tant que designer de polices de caractères, il a notamment travaillé sur des projets pour Vogue Hommes International, The New York Times Magazine ou l ICA – Institute of Contemporary Art London. De nombreux articles et publications bénéficient de ses connaissances dont « Schreib s auf, verdammt, schreib s auf ! » dans Frische Schriften, MfG, Zurich, 2004 ; Typeface as Program, JRP / Ringier, Zurich, 2006 ; « A full rhythmical experience: 20th century type design in Switzerland », dans 100 Years of Swiss Graphic Design, MfG, Zurich, 2014. Sa série Liz Taylor, qui combine portraits de la star et obscénités avec en question féminisme et pouvoir, a été présentée au MoMA PS1, au Stedelijk Museum à Amsterdam et à la Biennale de Venise. «ECAL Graphic Design» book and exhibition,03.03–08.04.2016,Gallery l elac, ECAL On the occasion of the release of the “ECAL Graphic Design” book published by JRP|Ringier, ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne presents from 4th March to 8th April at the Gallery l elac (opening on Thursday 3rd March 2016 from 6pm to 8pm) an exhibition of projects realised by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction. In relation with this event, François Rappo, Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction Professor, will give a lecture titled “Next” on Thursday 24th March 2016 at 6pm in the IKEA Auditorium, ECAL. IMAGES HD ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Edited by the Gavillet & Rust studio, the book revolves around a long succession of tracking shots in which projects are not classified in categories, but organised by colour. The exhibition design orchestrated by Adrien Rovero is based on the same concept, allowing a total flexibility of the exhibition. These new tools can convert images for printing devices using two, three, four or five spot colors. It offers a large variety of combinations, from basic colors to metallics, neons and pastels. “Color Library” was created within the “Workflow” research project (R&D) about printing technologies at ECAL / University of Art and Design Lausanne. This project was led by David Keshavjee, Guy Meldem, Tatiana Rihs, Julien Tavelli (Maximage) and supported by the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland (HES-SO). Née à Strasbourg en 1965, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster est une artiste de renommée internationale. Elle nourrit son œuvre d une mémoire vivante du cinéma, de la littérature et des structures ouvertes de l architecture et de la musique. Après s être fait connaître dans les années par ses «chambres», elle a participé à de nombreuses expositions dans des lieux aussi prestigieux que la Dia Arts Foundation à New York, la Documenta XI à Kassel ou encore la Tate Modern à Londres. Lauréate du Prix Marcel Duchamp, elle a par ailleurs contribué au design intérieur de boutiques Balenciaga à New York. Actuellement, et ce jusqu au 1er février 2016, elle bénéficie d une grande exposition rétrospective et prospective au Centre Pompidou Paris. ECAL Conference: Dieter Meier,09.12.2015,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL ECAL Conference: Dieter Meier - Swiss artist, director, musician and entrepreneur, Mendoza (ARG) Conférences ECAL Né en 1945 à Zurich, Dieter Meier est un artiste, réalisateur, musicien et entrepreneur suisse. Proche en tant qu artiste de l esprit Fluxus ou des situationnistes, ce touche-à-tout de génie s est fait mondialement connaître comme chanteur de Yello dans les années 80. Il a également réalisé des films tels que The Lightmaker, sélectionné au Festival international du film de Berlin en 2001, et signé tous les clips de Yello, ainsi que celui de Big in Japan, chanson mythique d Alphaville. Après une douzaine d albums avec son groupe, il a sorti en 2014 un disque solo intitulé Out of Chaos. Le Centre culturel suisse à Paris vient de présenter une exposition photographique de ses premières performances en tant qu artiste. Sa curiosité lui permet de multiplier les supports et d intervenir autant sur des flyers de musique électronique que sur des chartes graphiques et des catalogues pour des marques telles que Armani, Castelbajac, Kenzo, Lacoste ou Yves Saint Laurent. Il a souvent participé à des expositions et conférences, aussi bien en France qu au Brésil, au Japon, au Mexique ou en Suisse. Après avoir cofondé le magazine Intersection à Londres et dirigé sa création artistique, il a travaillé à Paris sur des magazines tels que Vanity Fair France et GQ France. Récemment, il a œuvré sur la refonte de la charte graphique de Libération Next, ainsi qu en partie sur celle du quotidien. Né en 1938 à Feldkirch (Autriche), Bernhard Leitner est un artiste et architecte pionnier dans le domaine des « Sound Spaces ». Eike König a fondé le studio de design graphique HORT à Francfort en 1994, puis l a déplacé à Berlin en 2007. Cet espace multidisciplinaire est un formidable « playground » créatif, où il marie avec succès travail et jeu. Même s il collabore avec des clients tels que Get Physical Music, New York Times, Nike, Universal Music ou Wallpaper*, sa philosophie ne repose pas uniquement sur l exécution de projets pour des clients, mais également sur la création d idées qui permettent de rendre la vie globalement meilleure. A partir du titre d une nouvelle de Jack London*, proposer aux étudiants d envisager leur pratique artistique comme une sorte de géographie. Les inciter à explorer cette région à la manière d un trappeur ou d un touriste éclairé afin d élargir et de diversifier leurs champs de connaissance et tenter ainsi de les aider à mieux percevoir les contours nécessairement mouvants de leur territoire. Pour cette exposition, les étudiants ont été invités à envisager leurs productions artistiques comme des feux, des dispositifs d allumages. Ceci afin de tenter de s approcher le plus possible des choses qui les animent. ECAL at the Dubai Design Week,26–31.10.2015,Dubai With six projects, ECAL is proud to participate in the "Global Grad Show" of the Dubai Design Week, a world-first exhibition of the most innovative projects from world s leading design schools. Curated by Brendan McGetrick, "Global Grad Show" offers an unprecedented overview of the issues and technologies that will shape the future. Comprised of 50 projects, the exhibition is organised into six categories - Construction, Health, Home, Memory, Play and Work. Collaboration ECAL/Emlio Pucci,29.09.2015,Granaiolo The famous Italian brand Emilio Pucci pairs with the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne for a collaboration born at Granaiolo, the brand s archive and talent center nearby Florence. During a three-day workshop led by Vincent Jacquier, a selection of students and assistants from the school s Visual Communication Department had the opportunity to explore and reinterpret signature print «Interactive Scarves» is the first of a series of surprising projects originated from their endeavors and achievements during the workshop. The designer Pauline Saglio has developed a three-pieced installation that proposes an innovative and poetic way to discover a scarf. The colors, shapes and compositions of each Emilio Pucci print are enhanced by light and sound to alter the perception of the iconic object, offering visitors a magical experience that stimulates all of the senses. Created by Clémence Chatel (Bachelor Graphic Design graduate), the second project is “Dolce Vita”, a set of irreverent patterns brimming with motifs of Italian culture – pasta, ice cream and more – in this case used to deck out skateboards rather than Pucci s coveted fashions. Tom Zambaz – It s not quite the Hilton It s not quite the Hilton is a fashion film created for fashion designer Jonathan Ageneau s diploma collection in which he imagined the hacker community s changing room. The film refers to the “whistleblower” figure, presenting characters trapped in a blank space experiencing paranoia and boredom at the same time. Through its webcam, the user can interact with the film all along. This prolific collaboration was a great opportunity to design two distinct projects feeding off our exchanges throughout the project.
Tancrède Ottiger – Scottish My graduation project is a typographical interpretation resulting from my interest in typography as much in its historical forms as in its modern aesthetics. Scottish is a character built on the classic models from the Renaissance era but with a radical language. The family is composed of 3 different but complementary cuts: light , regular & bold , and their corresponding italics. The challenge of this design was to conciliate a baroque structure which includes various calligraphic angles with the stability of a simple digital look. My graduation project is a typographical interpretation resulting from my interest in typography as much in its historical forms as in its modern aesthetics. The family is composed of 3 different but complementary cuts: light, regular & bold, and their corresponding italics. The challenge of this design was to conciliate a baroque structure which includes various calligraphic angles with the stability of a simple digital look.
Guillaume Cerdeira – Moon River Moon River is a 2D top-down view game. The player is locked in the screenplay: when he crosses the boundaries, he finds himself teleported to the opposite screen side. Three levels challenge the player, leading him to use the abilities of the character to solve a series of puzzles becoming more and more complex along the game. This project was an opportunity for me to create a coherent universe, but also to offer an entertaining and challenging experience.
Victor Tual – Kinetica My diploma project is a digital poster for Kinetica, an optical and kinetic art exhibition. In order to announce the events spread throughout the exhibition, I submit models of static optical art to development on an animated media. I therefore propose a visual language disturbing and playing with the viewers perception as well as allowing them to read information. In this project, I enjoyed using a mathematical organisation in order to create unexpected moments and give the illusion of random. My diploma project is a digital poster for Kinetica, an optical and kinetic art exhibition. In order to announce the events spread throughout the exhibition, I submit models of static optical art to development on an animated media. I therefore propose a visual language disturbing and playing with the viewers perception as well as allowing them to read information. My main fascination: the players fantasies, their obsessions, the way they pick numbers, and the rituals used to influence the implacable logic of numbers and call for luck, day after day. In order to reveal the dream, I used the grid and the numbers to generate visual layers built around three characters. By developing images, I was able to recreate this whole atmosphere of euphoria and imagination. Also, the player uses a set of rules to make up the grid, as does the graphic designer. In this project, I dealt with lottery games. ECAL Appartement 50, Cité Radieuse,04–19.07.2015,Cité Radieuse, Marseille In September 2014, twelve Master Product Design students of ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne were invited to reflect on a collection of objects to meet everyday needs in the Cité Radieuse in Marseille. The outcome of this research is being displayed as part of an exhibition staged in Apartment 50 from 4 to 19 July 2015. A 52-page publication produced by the Art Direction Master students will be issued concurrently. HD PICTURES Apartment 50 was restored by two enthusiasts, Jean-Marc Drut and Patrick Blauwart, as close as possible to its original condition. Listed as a historical monument, the venue occasionally hosts exhibition projects. World-renowned designers have already exhibited there, such as Jasper Morrison, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic and Pierre Charpin. Thus, under the direction of Thilo Alex Brunner, head of the Master Product Design at ECAL, and of ECAL professor Augustin Scott de Martinville, a series of objects was produced over one semester by the Product Design Master students. The project began in September 2014 with a three-day workshop in the Cité Radieuse, allowing students to experience life in the building. Based on their various observations, they created objects to “inhabit” Apartment 50, focusing particularly on the following features: The specific climate of the apartments: the fan creates an air flow on the mezzanine and the cushions are designed to fit both on the living room s indoor parapets and on the loggias tables. The flexibility of interior spaces: the large rotating lamp serves to light either the dining room or the living room in turn, while the small model can be used either on a desk or a bedside table. Tours of Apartment 50 which take place regularly: the carpet, crafted with the support of the Ruckstuhl AG manufacture in Langenthal, displays a map showing how the Cité Radieuse blended in with its environment at the time of construction, while the “unit” metre provides a simple tool to explain the Modulor system. Life in the communal areas, especially the roof terrace which serves as a meeting place: the chair and folding table are designed to facilitate migration from the living room of the apartment, while the picnic box allows to comfortably carry everything you for an aperitif. In addition to the projects around the above-mentioned specificities, half a dozen other objects can be discovered on the spot or in the related publication. In March 2015, the students of the ECAL Master Art Direction were invited to attend a four-day workshop to experience and document everyday life in the building with a view to editing a publication. Through the architectural spectrum across 52 pages, this editorial project includes portraits of residents or fictional characters inspired by the Modulor system, as well as still lifes and original typefaces echoing the building s proportions. Maxime Guyon – Technological Exaptation This project deals on the technological evolution at its large sense. Replicating the hyper-commercialization aesthetic codes, this series dissects standardized commodities and high technologies which are here listed as full species. Some of the images are intentionally manipulated, which finally witness the hybridizations that the photographic medium as well as technology undergo. This work helped me to go further in my researches on the role of a photographer nowadays while we currently experience a significant rise of post-internet art. Sheep Mowers of Metis Reford Gardens and ECAL collaborated on bringing to Québec 25 students from Bachelor Industrial Design, with the support of the "Summer University" program of the Canton of Vaud. This project was conceived and built by 2nd year students in the Bachelor Industrial Design from ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, Switzerland, overseen by the Swiss designer Adrien Rovero, on the occasion of a one week workshop at Reford Gardens. Diplomas Jérôme Wilfredo Baccaglio , Logos for Drones and Such... I created a catalogue for drone logos. It gathers a heterogenous iconography (invented, drawn, found) whose every motif is available for purchase as a canvas, a tattoo, a drawing or a sticker. This is an oblique strategy adopted to talk about the interpretation of an image (as the spectator, or as the artist, to assign it a meaning, a name); the versus created by hand-made work and a digital image; mercantilism; the matter of copyright and its role in an information-infested era. Tina Braegger, Fasanenstrasse 30 I made an architectural model of white cardboard, placed on four white metal legs. I decorated the model with white curtains that flow over the model down to the floor. Inside the model, I put old toys of mine, objects that originally belong to a doll s house. By attaching the legs directly to the model, it looks like a table. I wanted to create something surreal, like a dream; the objects inside the model are slightly too big, and the model bleeds off as the curtains overflow. Appartement 50 Cité Radieuse Apartment 50 was restored by two enthusiasts, Jean-Marc Drut and Patrick Blauwart, as close as possible to its original condition. Listed as a historical monument, the venue occasionally hosts exhibition projects. World-renowned designers have already exhibited there, such as Jasper Morrison, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic and Pierre Charpin. Thus, under the direction of Thilo Alex Brunner, head of the Master Product Design at ECAL, and of ECAL professor Augustin Scott de Martinville, a series of objects was produced over one semester by the Product Design Master students. The project began in September 2014 with a three-day workshop in the Cité Radieuse, allowing students to experience life in the building. Based on their various observations, they created objects to “inhabit” Apartment 50, focusing particularly on the following features: The specific climate of the apartments: the fan creates an air flow on the mezzanine and the cushions are designed to fit both on the living room s indoor parapets and on the loggias tables. The flexibility of interior spaces: the large rotating lamp serves to light either the dining room or the living room in turn, while the small model can be used either on a desk or a bedside table. Tours of Apartment 50 which take place regularly: the carpet, crafted with the support of the Ruckstuhl AG manufacture in Langenthal, displays a map showing how the Cité Radieuse blended in with its environment at the time of construction, while the “unit” metre provides a simple tool to explain the Modulor system. Life in the communal areas, especially the roof terrace which serves as a meeting place: the chair and folding table are designed to facilitate migration from the living room of the apartment, while the picnic box allows to comfortably carry everything you for an aperitif. In addition to the projects around the above-mentioned specificities, half a dozen other objects can be discovered on the spot or in the related publication. In March 2015, the students of the ECAL Master Art Direction were invited to attend a four-day workshop to experience and document everyday life in the building with a view to editing a publication. Through the architectural spectrum across 52 pages, this editorial project includes portraits of residents or fictional characters inspired by the Modulor system, as well as still lifes and original typefaces echoing the building s proportions. "Life is a Bed of Roses (un roman)" exhibition,26.05–04.07.2015,Fondation Ricard, Paris Une exposition de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne et de la Fondation d entreprise Ricard, Paris. «Life is a Bed of Roses (un roman)» – Exposition jusqu au 4 juillet 2015 – L Ecole de Stéphanie du 2 au 4 juillet 2015 Ce projet a été conçu par Stéphanie Moisdon, avec la participation des étudiants et des enseignants du Master Arts Visuels de l ECAL. Sous la forme d un roman d éducation de l imagination ou d imagination de l éducation, l exposition est le lieu d un théâtre et d un chœur, d un décor, d apparitions de formes, d objets et de personnages. Le cheminement évolutif de ce roman d apprentissage s est progressivement formé, durant toute une année, autour d un film d Alain Resnais, du souvenir déplié du château du Comte Forbek, dans l esprit des temps médiévaux, celui des artisans de tous temps. Pour écrire à plusieurs ce conte léger et moderne de la jeunesse, il aura fallu s appuyer sur quelques stratégies obliques, circuler entre l expérience et l immaturité, le talent et le métier, entre les prédispositions personnelles et l idéal collectif. Ce travail en «ateliers» a été conduit par Valentin Carron, Sylvie Fleury, Tristan Garcia, Stéphane Kropf, Fabian Marti, en collaboration avec Lucile Dupraz. La scénographie a été réalisée par Denis Savary avec Ruben Valdez et le générique par Lisa Stein. L Ecole de Stéphanie L exposition accueille durant trois jours la 6ème édition de «L Ecole de Stéphanie», qui se déroule dans un espace modélisé à partir des fonctions minimales d une salle de classe. Son image a été pensée par Pierre Joseph, qui la définit ainsi: «L espace intègre une série de douze photographies de vitraux, une moquette bleue, une table de conférence, un équipement audio-visuel, et des sièges en nombre suffisant. L ensemble pourrait évoquer d emblée une salle de classe de l enseignement catholique mais ce n est pas ici véritablement l enjeu. La série d images, prise sans vocation documentaire, ni cadrage exigeant, nous renvoie davantage du côté du mitraillage photographique et touristique que vers une lecture savante de l iconographie religieuse. Malgré cela, fruit du hasard et de différents paramètres, dont l ensoleillement de la cathédrale Notre-Dame, où ont été prises ces photos, ce jour-là, de la distance objectif/sujet, de la focale et de l exposition, une seule scène de vitraux aura été choisie. Il s agit d un motif fréquent de l art chrétien, l arbre de Jessé, dans une version restaurée de Viollet-le-Duc. On pourra donc y voir et y lire, une allusion parcellaire à la généalogie de Jésus et donc à l histoire et la transmission au sens large. L arrière-plan de chacun des personnages de ces vitraux étant bleu comme l est la moquette qui emplit l espace de la classe, le dispositif inclut malgré lui le visiteur ou l élève dans cette «histoire» Ces images sérielles n en sont pas moins tout à fait décoratives et joueront de cette manière et sur ce registre avec le reste de l exposition.» Le prototype de «L Ecole de Stéphanie» n est ni une fiction ni une parodie, mais le pilote d une école, une situation amenée à se déplacer et à se renouveler, comme c est le cas depuis sa création en 2006 pour «La force de l art», triennale d art contemporain à Paris. «L Ecole de Stéphanie» est un espace de projection, de travail, de transmission et de mutualisation des savoirs. Une petite école temporaire où les questions d image, de représentation et de langage circulent librement. Un lieu émancipé des règles et de l autorité, des classements et des disciplines, qui fonctionne hors programme et sans manuel. Sur toute la durée de la manifestation, des «maîtres» et «maîtresses» interviennent selon un rythme intensif. Ils ne cherchent pas à régner, ils s inventent des filiations et des trajectoires personnelles, des méthodes et des outils de pédagogie. Ils enseignent, le temps d une classe, une leçon de choses, une leçon de mots. In the form of a Bildingsroman (“education novel”) about imagination, or about imagination of education, the exhibition is the venue for a theatre and a choir, a set, and appearances of forms, objects and characters. The evolving path of this “education novel” has been gradually formed, over a whole year, around an Alain Resnais film, and the unfurled memory of Comte Forbek s castle, in the spirit of mediaeval times, the spirit of craftsmen of all times. For several pens to write this light and modern tale of youth, it was important to rely on a few oblique strategies, and travel between experience and immaturity, talent and craft, between personal predispositions and collective ideal. ECAL exhibition at Montreal,22.05–11.10.2015,Montreal For its 53rd season, the Reford Gardens (Les Jardins de Métis) present ‟Lambmowers”, a series of installations at once practical and amusing. These agricultural accessories will enhance the well-being of the sheep who will mow the lawns previously maintained by a fleet of lawnmowers and Reford Gardens staff. Exhibition from May 23 until October 11, 2015. This project was conceived and built on site by 2nd year students in the Bachelor Industrial Design from ECAL. A selection of the installations and photographs by Nicolas Haeni, graduate of the Bachelor Photohraphy and of the Master Art Direction, are exhibited in the open air on the Place de la Dauversière next to the historic Musée du Château Ramezay Museum in Old Montreal. Collaboration with Christofle 2015 ECAL lays the table For this fifth collaboration between ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne and the Maison Christofle, the students of the Master of Advanced Studies have taken the challenge to dive straight into the heart of silversmithing history by creating a set of cutlery. This particularly demanding project required a perfect mastery of proportions, ergonomy and detail refinement. During a four weeks workshop, led by the Slovakian born and Lausanne based designer Tomas Kral, the 12 students of the programme have individually created their concepts. Within the variety of proposals, 6 projects were selected for further development and the production of prototypes. This second phase enabled the students to further refine the details, while constantly verifying the precision of the forms trough 3D printed resin mock-ups. Thanks to cutting edge technologies - in particular 3D printing in metal - and the expertise of Christofle s centuries old craftsmanship, 6 sets of forks, knives and spoons were produced in a record timeframe, while ensuring the outstanding quality of the manual finishing.Dipping Rodrigo Caula Inspired by the Christofle manufacture visit and especially by the process of silver coating, this project creates the illusion of a raw core hidden in the inner of the cutlery. During the process, the pieces are submerged in a silver bath while being held on its tips. The chiseled core which reveals the raw and textured appearance, seems to be covered and smoothened by a film applied to the rest of the piece. Frisson Alexis Tourron For this project, the point of departure was an abstentious and pure form, while the handles were subtilely transformed. Inspired by the movement and waves on the surface of the water, this series of cutlery comes to life through its refined aesthetics and the reflections on the polished metallic surface. Posata Stefano Panterotto This project bridges the gap between tradition and modernity with its forms inspired by the gestures and the handling of the cutlery. The details like bevels, cuts or marks become subtile decorations and enrich the pieces with a refined and contemporary character. Collerette Ophélie Sanga Just as the Renaissance costumes, the ruff decorates the edges of this cutlery set. Reminding us of gathered fabric, the wavy surface creates a dynamic play of reflections, referencing at the same time the past and the present, resulting in a highly contemporary piece. Etang d Or Kaja Solgaard Dahl This project was largely inspired by the lakeside landscape at dusk. The base of the cutlery was hollowed out and the resulting indentation was then plated with a golden reflecting finish. The erosion of the volume leads to a pronounced contrast between perfection and imperfection. Point de Paris Annie Tung Anchored in the French cultural patrimony, the laced fabric creates a direct association to the environment of the table. All the pieces of cutlery seem to be wrapped by a fine broidery in order to perfectly match to the fabric of the tablecloth and the napkins. The pieces manage to be at the same time feminine, delicate and classic while maintaining a contemporary impression due to their minimalistic formal language.

Jeudi 7 mai 2015 à 18 h, Auditoire IKEA, ECAL Wade Guyton, artiste, New York Né en 1972 à Hammond (Etats-Unis), Wade Guyton produit des œuvres qui assument la structure et l apparence de peintures au sens traditionnel du terme et réalisent pourtant un bouleversement complet des codes du modernisme. Elles sont produites à l aide de très grandes imprimantes jet d encre . Son travail a fait l objet d expositions à la Galerie Chantal Crousel (Paris), à la Kunsthalle (Zürich) ou encore au Whitney Museum of American Art (New York). Virginia Overton, artiste, Brooklyn Née en 1971 à Nashville (Etats-Unis), Virginia Overton est connue entre autres pour des sculptures réalisées avec des matériaux comme le bois. Elle a exposé en solo notamment à White Cube (Londres), au Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, à la Kunsthalle Berne ou encore à The Kitchen (New York). Thymio meets ECAL During a one week workshop students were asked to develop projects using the Thymio robot. 50 Robots were available. The week began with an introduction to Thymio and its secrets by Prof. Francesco Mondada from EPFL. Students worked then in group with the task to make Thymio(s) write a word, all those words was then put together to form a sentences that you can discover in this movie. Thymio is an affordable educational robot. It provides three main features: a large number of sensors and actuators, an educative interactivity based on light and touch and a programming environment featuring graphical and text programming. Thymio Robot has been developed in a collaboration between the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the Ecole Cantonale d Art de Lausanne (ECAL).
