Aural Practices in Visual Arts Project
Aural Practices in Visual Arts

Aural Practices in Visual Arts The project is an investigation into the creative process of visual art through the concept of aurality, which explores sound, listening and auditory perception from a cultural perspective. It is about stepping beyond object culture to look at listening as part of the broader and richer cultural approach developed by studying the case of ECAL, its (human) actors and (non-human) agents. The aim of the project is to better integrate the issue of sound and listening in transmitting knowledge of art and artistic practices and to give students a starting point on which to develop critical and reflexive listening in their work. The results show in particular how actors influence sounds at ECAL. These acts of meaningful listening were observable thanks to a methodology involving artistic interventions using sound, in the form of disturbances of daily life in the school. The way in which the actors repair disturbances helps describe shared perceptions in action. Breaching experiments have given a detailed description of how the actors continuously define the meaning of the sounds or the absence of careful listening, depending on the interaction and the place in the school. The successive experiments, by confirming or diverging from the results of the one before, refine methods of privatising spaces by using audio equipment at the place of the group work. In short, the study shows the fertile ambivalence whereby no school sound is ever just a school sound. They are only sounds, of course, but the meaning that the actors attribute to them define part of the institution at any given moment.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader) (professor) Anna Harris, Université de Maastricht (expert) Philippe Sormani, Institut Suisse de Rome, Université de Lausanne (expert)Visiting lecturersAmy Cimini, Bill DietzPeriodfebruary 2018 – july 2019Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV) Ville de RenensArtistsKevin Drumm, Christina Kubisch, Scott Arford, Randy H. ECAL Milano 2015 (with Vacheron Constantin): Arts & Crafts & Design: Time according to ECAL & Swiss Craftsmen Event
ECAL Milano 2015 (with Vacheron Constantin): Arts & Crafts & Design: Time according to ECAL & Swiss Craftsmen

ECAL Milano 2015 (with Vacheron Constantin): Arts & Crafts & Design: Time according to ECAL & Swiss Craftsmen,14–19.04.2015,Museo Bagatti Valsecchi, Milan Vacheron Constantin will be presenting the “Arts & Crafts & Design: Time according to ECAL and Swiss Craftsmen” exhibition, produced in partnership with ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne (University of Art and Design Lausanne) and the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d Arte (at the Swiss Pavilion at Expo Milan 2015, (the Universal Exhibition to be hosted by Milan) and of which a preview will be launched during the Milan Furniture Fair. This is an innovative approach combining contemporary creation and arts and crafts, and entirely dedicated to knowledge transfer. Images HD Catalogue Official press relase The Manufacture Vacheron Constantin is delighted to share its passion and its philosophy in its capacity as partner to the Swiss Pavilion at Expo Milan 2015. This prestigious event represents a magnificent opportunity for exchanges as well as a unique showcase for the expertise and crafts of the participating countries. Expo Milan 2015 will take place in Italy from May 1st to October 31st2015 and is particularly relevant in view of the history of the Manufacture: in 1819, François Constantin, during a voyage to Italy, first enounced the working principle that is now the company motto: “Do better if possible, and that is always possible…” The exhibition to be presented in Milan is the fruit of a joint project bringing together ECAL, the prestigious university of art and design with an international reputation, the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d Arte, an institution known for its commitment to the sustainability of the artistic crafts, and the Manufacture Vacheron Constantin. Since 2013, Vacheron Constantin has partnered the ECAL s Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship, a unique training course for the various creative arts professions related to the world of luxury. This is an opportunity for students to make a contribution each year to conducting a concrete project, in partnership with the Manufacture. This original approach links contemporary creation to ancestral know-how. Within the framework of this project, ECAL and Vacheron Constantin have asked 12 students to combine their creativity with that of experienced craftsmen in order to produce unique objects and demonstrate the richness, the variety, as well as the relevance to contemporary creation of these artisanal crafts. Under the leadership of Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin (Studio Formafantasma) these 12 “duos” have worked on the same theme, Time, and more precisely the cyclical time of the seasons, using materials as diverse as paper and glass. Visitors will thus have an opportunity to explore mobiles crafted with an automaton maker; a picnic bag made with a saddler; a vase created with a glass blower; a mirror cast in an aluminium foundry; a lamp built with a stonemason; an axe and knives developed with an expert in carbon fibre; an assembly of stained glass windows composed with a master glassmaker; plates designed with a ceramist; fans produced with a paper-cutting specialist; a tray fashioned from marquetry; a millstone carved in conjunction with a stone sculptor and finally a musical box executed with the help of a stringed-instrument maker (luthier). These works, born of a student-craftsman dialogue, have given rise to an exhibition entitled “Arts&Crafts&Design: Time according to ECAL and Swiss Craftsmen, previewed in Milan during the Milan Furniture Fair (Salone Internazionale del Mobile from April 14th to 19th 2015) prior to being presented in the context of the VIP Lounge of the Swiss Pavilion for the entire duration of Expo Milan 2015 (May 1st to October 31st 2015). Taking part in Expo Milan 2015, a prestigious event steeped in history, is a fascinating opportunity for ECAL, for the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d Arte as well as for Vacheron Constantin, and provides an opportunity to present the very best of Swiss expertise.

Exhibition of the Master Fine Arts in Francfort Event
Exhibition of the Master Fine Arts in Francfort

Exhibition of the Master Fine Arts in Francfort,19.09–13.10.2013,basis, francfort Gallery basis, based in Francfort, is delighted to be presenting the exhibition "Practicalities (La vie matérielle)", a collaboration between the Master in Fine Arts at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne and Willem de Rooij s class at the Städelschule, Frankfurt am Main, from September 19 to October 13, 2013 (opening September 18, 7pm). "If it s true that every book must have a raison d être, this isn t a book," Marguerite Duras wrote of La vie matérielle, which she published in 1987. This autumn at Basis Practicalities (La vie matérielle) considers the utopian reach as well as the material bounds pertaining to art produced in the art school s realm. How may a showcase of works by art students be formulated? Can it be an exhibition and function as such? Could one articulate its raison d être anew? This project results from a one-year exchange program initiated by artist Willem de Rooij in collaboration with curator and art critic Stéphanie Moisdon. Conceived by students and recent graduates of the Master Fine Arts directed by Moisdon at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, Practicalities is the second part of a twofold exhibition program. It echoes and completes Influence at 1m3, whose display introduced to a Lausanne audience works by artists studying under de Rooij s professorship at Städelschule Frankfurt. Ways of making and displaying art vary from one territory to another. As Practicalities stands at a threshold between two localities, it acknowledges the constraints and liberties one experiences here and there as an artist not yet fully concerned with commercial strategies or institutional demands.

Exposition des étudiants en Bachelor Arts Visuels,22.11–16.12.2012,Hall Kudelski, ECAL «There is a difference between a shaky or out-of-focus photograph and a snapshot of clouds and fog banks.»

Exposition Master Arts Visuels Event
Exposition Master Arts Visuels

Realtime Narratives 2025 Project
Realtime Narratives 2025

Realtime Narratives 2025 During the Realtime Narratives course, second-year students had to create a real-time narrative experience using Unreal Engine software. The aim of the project was to raise students awareness of the use of 3D realtime engines and the various links with other software specific to each stage of development. Overload This project explores how the environment and pressures of modern office life seep into the subconscious of an ordinary person. During a dream in a dark and stormy forest, the player is confronted with a landscape imbued with palpable tension, where oversized office objects illustrate the weight and omnipresence of the professional world. These strange visions represent the transformation of the banal into oppressive figures within mental space. The dreamlike journey leads to a cavern housing a human-sized office, marking a tipping point where the chaos outside calms down before the character s abrupt awakening. By Our Badgers Climb Starting a journey isn t simple. Sometimes you need a little push from someone you trust — or maybe it s a stranger who helps you chase your goals. In this minigame, that idea comes to life. You play as a young badger. A badger that feels bored and restless while visiting his grandparents. When his grandfather suggests he set out on an adventure, the little badger is unsure and hesitant. But with the encouragement and support of those he meets along the way, he begins to create memories he ll treasure forever. This story is about perseverance, believing in what you can achieve, and remembering you re never alone — there s always someone out there who can help you find your way. By Overload This project explores how the environment and pressures of modern office life seep into the subconscious of an ordinary person. By Robot Family Robot Family is a narrative experience that confronts the player with the passage of time. Plunged into the heart of a robot family, the player can explore the house and interact with its members. But to evolve and discover the world, they must leave their family cocoon. Each time out, the player is faced with a challenge symbolizing a stage in life. Once they ve overcome the challenge, they can choose to return home. However, time does not flow in the same way inside and outside. Each time he returns, the house has changed, marked by the effects of time, just like his family. By

Manor Cultural Prize 2026 awarded to Lucas Erin Article
Manor Cultural Prize 2026 awarded to Lucas Erin

Manor Cultural Prize 2026 awarded to Lucas Erin Congratulations to artist Lucas Erin, ECAL graduate, who has been awarded the 2025 Manor Cultural Prize for the canton of Vaud. The jury was impressed by his approach, both precise and poetic. Created in 1982 to support emerging Swiss talent, the Manor Cultural Prize is awarded every two years by a jury of experts. Presented at a key moment in the careers of young artists, the prize offers significant momentum for their work and contributes to the promotion of contemporary art in the canton of Vaud. The award also includes a solo museum exhibition at MCBA and the publication of a catalogue. Born in 1990 in Clamart, France, Lucas Erin holds a Master s degree in Visual Arts from ECAL, where he also worked as a teaching assistant for several years. His practice spans installation, sculpture and video. Deeply interested in the notion of contact, as traced through objects, and attentive to the shifting boundary between interior and exterior, Lucas Erin explores what succeeds or fails in the act of exchange. Through carefully constructed arrangements, found objects and meticulously crafted sculptures, he creates spaces rich with overlapping histories and emerging narratives. Influenced by thinkers of creolisation, his process relies on association, recovery and displacement to allow new meanings to emerge within the exhibition space. His work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions in Switzerland and France, and has also been featured in numerous group shows. Between 2013 and 2020, he was actively involved in the independent art scene as co-founder of Happy Baby Gallery in Crissier, a team member of La Colonie in Paris, and a collaborator on various curatorial projects between Paris and Lausanne. The artist will present a solo exhibition in the Project Space at MCBA in autumn 2026, accompanied by a publication. lucaserin.com @_lucas.erin_

Screen Design 2024

Screen Design 2024 Websites developed over a semester according to a book chosen by the students as part of Harry Bloch s Screen Design course, second year Bachelor of Visual Communication. Le Vieux qui lisait des romans d amour An interpretation of the novel by Chilean author Luis Sepúlveda, this site immerses you in the small Amazonian town of El Idilio. The experience invites you to live the hunt led by Antonio José Bolívar, in search of a Tigrillo that has killed a man. by Nyria Graber, Carolina Crivelli The Consolations of the Forest An interpretation of Sylvain Tesson s story, this website explores the experience of solitude and withdrawal from the world in a cabin on the shores of Lake Baikal. The students worked around the notion of time passing and the repetition of daily gestures, translating the slowness, contemplation and cyclical rhythm of life in isolation. by Yann Müller, Maeva Chanson The Suitcase Interpretation of Sergei Dovlatov s book, in which the main character rediscovers the suitcase with which he left the USSR. The site explores the idea of interstices: openings through which the objects in the suitcase emerge, but also spaces where forbidden Soviet alternative culture came to life. by Jonathan Vögele, Simeon Dubuis

WHERE DID THE BATS GO?

WHERE DID THE BATS GO?,16.05.2025,Cinéma Bellevaux Pipistrelles, Serotines, and Bachelor Fine Arts students gather at Cinéma Bellevaux for an evening of performances, screenings, and sounds emerging from the invisible. In recent spring weeks, first year Bachelor Fine Arts students and cryptic bats, be they bicolored vesper bats, serotines, pipistrelles, or noctules (though undeniably communicating across two main frequency ranges: some between 40,000–50,000 Hz and others between 50,000–60,000 Hz), have been fabulously trying to establish audible contact, to hear one another, to understand each other, without ever attempting to possess. After several missed encounters, this hybrid collective invites all species to an open evening centered around the political and metaphorical question that has haunted them. Hibernation and/or escape, apathy and/or cigarette smoke, lack of interest and/or lack of water: multiple hypotheses will be raised, presented through performances, concerts, and screenings. We hope to see you and perhaps hear, together, a response emerging from torpor, or in response to it.DATES & SCHEDULEFriday May 16, 2025 7pm – Doors open 8pm – Performances Free entryVENUECinéma Bellevaux Rte Aloys-Fauquez 4 CH-1018 LausanneWEBSITEcinemabellevaux.ch

Folklore Fusion Project
Folklore Fusion

Folklore Fusion Folklore Fusion – a CGI character project developed by students in Bachelor Media & Interaction Design at ECAL, exploring the creative collision between Japanese and Swiss folklore through the lens of contemporary visual storytelling. Through the immense popularity of anime, manga, or global phenomena, Japanese narratives and visuals have conquered the world, shaping pop culture and popularizing themes from Japanese folklore in Western media. In this context, Folklore Fusion explores the creative interplay between tradition and modern visual storytelling with a cutting-edge CGI character project. After an intense trip through Tokyo s vibrant neighborhoods, rich history, architecture, and local legends, ECAL Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students created the Swijūs—fusion of “switzerland” and “Kai-Jū”—hybrid creatures blending Japanese and Swiss folklore. Each student focused on a specific district of Tokyo, merging its cultural and architectural identity with legendary figures from both traditions to craft unique narratives. By studying clichés and stereotypes, they reinterpreted cultural symbols to create an unexpected fusion between the two worlds. Behind a seemingly naive approach, Folklore Fusion deeply investigates the capabilities of modular design system in both storytelling and visual language, following detailed creation guidelines that ensure balance between the two folklores. Much like a successful phenomenon expanding its range of media, the project plays with multiple cross-media formats that reflect how popular culture circulates in the digital age. It features an authentic trading card game (TCG) collection that easily fits into other existing decks, with various levels of rarity and immersive augmented reality (AR) content that brings the Swijūs to life. A magazine-style printed edition documents research inspirations, while an interactive online map allows exploration of a reimagined Tokyo where each Swijū watches over its district. Beyond paying homage and respect to Japanese culture, Folklore Fusion and its Swijū become imaginary artifacts of an era marked by cross-cultural influences and shared narratives.Magazine of Fusion Explore the bilingual Folklore Fusion Japanese-English edition, a magazine-style book printed with metallic pantone. Serving as a visual archive, it compiles research, iconic imagery, and analyses to extend the project. Service Design - 2025 Project
Service Design - 2025

Service Design - 2025 During the Service Design course, the 3rd year of the Graphic Design, Photography and Media & Interaction Design bachelors had to create multi-media projects. A collaboration of the Visual Communication department which had as subject the SDGs (*Sustainable Development Goals). The theme was called "For a good cause, make the SDGs a reality" and its objective was to allow students to develop a cause that is close to their hearts. Each project consists of at least two different media, one primary and one secondary. These projects could take any form that the students deemed relevant, be it a website, editions, posters, a video sequence or virtual reality. The SDGs are meant to be achieved globally by all United Nations member states by 2030. This entails all states equally playing their part in seeking common solutions to the world s urgent challenges. Switzerland is also obligated to implement these goals at the national level. Furthermore, incentives must be created to encourage non-governmental actors to increasingly contribute to sustainable development. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), along with their 169 targets, constitute the core of the Agenda 2030. They integrate the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development and, for the first time, place poverty eradication and sustainable development on the same agenda. 2030 IS NOT FAR AWAY Edition Our docu-fiction takes the form of a black box. As major institutions and the UN admit their failure to achieve the SDGs, it records government activities in the year 2030 through the lens of global energy degradation. Amidst reports and official documents, Ravi Mehta, an energy researcher commissioned by the UN, infiltrates the system logs and reveals what is truly happening behind the scenes of a world on the brink. He exposes the deceptive efforts of states and paints a portrait of a polarized world, where the pursuit of profit makes sustainable development impossible. In 2030, he travels the globe, closely following several projects that promise sustainable energy alternatives. However, government pressure hinders him and his colleagues from properly implementing the program. As the story unfolds, the reader witnesses the worsening situation and becomes aware of the deep interconnection between the SDGs—until the end of the year, when humanity is ultimately condemned by its past inaction. By , & Lasting parcel Edition & Website The project takes the form of a newsletter, delivered like a package in a mailbox. Inside the box, beneath its packaging, the recipient finds an informative edition focused on a specific SDG, featuring text sourced from the official SDG website, along with four postcards containing QR codes. When scanned, each card leads to a website offering a rich, immersive visual interpretation of the newsletter s theme. The user can navigate through various types of content—graphic boards, videos, sounds, and images—allowing for a non-linear exploration of the edition. Visitors can also access an index, presented as an interactive map, which brings together past and future newsletters of the project. Each edition can be viewed or ordered directly from the platform. There are four newsletters in total—four packages—each containing the same set of media formats. By , & SDG QUEST Video game Our video game offers an interactive experience designed to raise awareness and explain the environmental and social challenges of the SDGs to younger audiences, using a language and format that resonates with them. Players take on the role of a child transforming a grey, polluted world through their actions and interactions with local inhabitants. The goal is to inspire young people and children to take real-world action by showing them that even small gestures can have a big impact. We provide an educational and engaging game that combines entertainment with awareness, empowering the next generation to make a difference. By , & LET S ACT NOW Website An immersive mobile website designed to raise awareness and inspire action around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Let s Act Now presents a series of mobile-first websites, each crafted as an interactive one-page experience dedicated to a specific SDG. Through striking visuals, impactful videos, and 3D animations, each page delves into the global challenges shaping our future. Visitors are immersed in a rich experience where every visual element—from thought-provoking images to animated sequences—is designed to spark curiosity, encourage reflection, and drive engagement. This project aims to make the SDGs accessible, impactful, and engaging, mobilizing a broad audience around the world s most urgent challenges. With Let s Act Now, the mission is clear: turn awareness into concrete action. By , , & Mon monde parfait Edition How do children envision the future? We interviewed 60 children aged 4 to 11, all attending school in Switzerland, to gather their visions of an ideal world. These conversations, centered around the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), allowed us to dive into their imaginations and discover their ideas for a better future. Our project invites these young minds to imagine a utopian world aligned with the SDGs, while also proposing solutions to improve today s reality. The children s ideas were then transformed into creative, colorful visuals that illustrate their unique visions of a perfect future. The publication brings together these in-depth interviews along with the illustrations. A second layer of reading is offered through augmented reality: by scanning selected pages, readers can access more alarming data on today s environmental and social challenges—creating a striking contrast with the children s imagined utopia. This project highlights the richness of children s perspectives and their potential to inspire meaningful reflection on a sustainable future. By , , & Getting Involved Edition & Posters The project consists of three editions, each focused on a specific Sustainable Development Goal (SDG). These editions combine protest slogans with visual symbols that embody their messages. They share a common core derived from the “Getting Involved” chapter of Amnesty International s Sustainable Development Goals text, which offers guidance on how to engage in the fight for the SDGs. Each edition also includes a section dedicated to its respective SDG, featuring detachable and fold-out pages that can be transformed into protest signs. These pages are based on the goals outlined in the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly on September 25, 2015. The editions are modular, allowing pages to be interchanged across editions to vary and customize the slogans. By , &
