Realtime Narratives – 2025

Realtime Narratives – 2025

During the Realtime Narratives course, second-year students had to create a real-time narrative experience using Unreal Engine software.
The aim of the project was to raise students awareness of the use of 3D realtime engines and the various links with other software specific to each stage of development.

Robot Family

Robot Family is a narrative experience that confronts the player with the passage of time. Plunged into the heart of a robot family, the player can explore the house and interact with its members. But to evolve and discover the world, they must leave their family cocoon. Each time out, the player is faced with a challenge symbolizing a stage in life. Once they've overcome the challenge, they can choose to return home. However, time does not flow in the same way inside and outside. Each time he returns, the house has changed, marked by the effects of time, just like his family.

Overload

This project explores how the environment and pressures of modern office life seep into the subconscious of an ordinary person. During a dream in a dark and stormy forest, the player is confronted with a landscape imbued with palpable tension, where oversized office objects illustrate the weight and omnipresence of the professional world. These strange visions represent the transformation of the banal into oppressive figures within mental space. The dreamlike journey leads to a cavern housing a human-sized office, marking a tipping point where the chaos outside calms down before the character's abrupt awakening.

Our Badgers Climb

Starting a journey isn’t simple. Sometimes you need a little push from someone you trust — or maybe it’s a stranger who helps you chase your goals. In this minigame, that idea comes to life. You play as a young badger. A badger that feels bored and restless while visiting his grandparents. When his grandfather suggests he set out on an adventure, the little badger is unsure and hesitant. But with the encouragement and support of those he meets along the way, he begins to create memories he’ll treasure forever. This story is about perseverance, believing in what you can achieve, and remembering you’re never alone — there’s always someone out there who can help you find your way.

Hello World! Goodbye predictable, standardized and interchangeable web. Students questioned the conventions of the digital World, explored the Wide possibilities of the medium, and even invented new approaches to interact with the Web. And what better way to give web design meaning than through the students own portfolios, understood as expressions of attitude and personality. https://websites.ecal-mid.ch/

This workshop explores the use of real-time video streams as a medium for transforming reality. Through live capture or interface-based processes, participants experiment with different ways of altering images using locally run diffusion models. The video stream is approached as raw material, opening up new perspectives on how reality can be perceived and transformed.
