ECAL inaugurates its new Print Centre,02.02.2017,ECAL, Renens Thanks to Canton of Vaud and to generous support from institutions in the region, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has inaugurated its new Print Centre at the heart of its campus in Renens, offering new state-of-the-art equipment to its students. These premises can be discovered during the ECAL Open Days 2017 on Friday 3 February (afternoon) and Saturday 4 February (all day). ECAL is constantly rewriting the book. The spaces made available in June 2016 the ECAL building by the Ateliers de la Ville de Renens have served to establish a unique Print Centre dedicated to students, which brings together, over close to 900 sq.m, a printing press (offset press and binding equipment), plotters, inkjet and laser printers as well as screen printing, lithography and etching workshops. Transformed this summer, fitted out at the end of the year, and finally equipped with new machines, including a Heidelberg 5-colour offset press, these new premises are now fully operational. But why develop a printing house and related techniques in an all-digital era? The main answer is the explanation of the acronym ECAL: Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne. The primary vocation of a SCHOOL is to teach know-how, to put fundamentals into practice, to encourage experiments and to provide skills in specific techniques. As such, a printing house is a great educational tool which is essential for a complete top-quality education. An art school without a quasi-professional printing house is not really an art school. The 600 ECAL students make this place their home to create or enhance their works. Graphic artists and photographers produce posters, magazines or books, industrial designers lay out portfolios, artists create editions, filmmakers print their posters. From an institutional point of view, all ECAL exhibition invitations, as well as numerous books and catalogues, are printed in-house, thus promoting the students achievements, but also highlighting the excellence of education in our Canton and region. Without a high-level printing facility on its premises, ECAL would not be what it is today - one of the world s top schools of art and design. And what would ART be without printing techniques and paper? Not much... No paintings, no books, no posters... Not to mention the contribution of techniques such as lithography, screen printing or etching, which are part of the history of art and which ECAL continues to develop, because this know-how allows widening the various media and promotes diversity in creativity. ECAL would like to thank Canton of Vaud, without which this project could not have been completed, as well as the generous institutions whose support allowed the development of the Print Centre: Loterie Romande, Sandoz Family Foundation and Fondation Casino Barrière de Montreux, Fondation ECAL+

«ECAL Graphic Design» book and exhibition,03.03–08.04.2016,Gallery l elac, ECAL On the occasion of the release of the “ECAL Graphic Design” book published by JRP|Ringier, ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne presents from 4th March to 8th April at the Gallery l elac (opening on Thursday 3rd March 2016 from 6pm to 8pm) an exhibition of projects realised by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction. In relation with this event, François Rappo, Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction Professor, will give a lecture titled “Next” on Thursday 24th March 2016 at 6pm in the IKEA Auditorium, ECAL. IMAGES HD ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Edited by the Gavillet & Rust studio, the book revolves around a long succession of tracking shots in which projects are not classified in categories, but organised by colour. The exhibition design orchestrated by Adrien Rovero is based on the same concept, allowing a total flexibility of the exhibition. Exhibition "ECAL Graphic Design" Exhibition from 4th March to 8th April 2016, Wednesday to Friday, 1pm to 5pm. Closed from 25th March to 5th April 2016. A «teaser» version of the exhibition is presented at the Musée des beaux-arts du Locle until the 29th of May 2016. Klaus Stille – The Blick Book The absurd articles that give me my inspiration for this publication come from the newspaper Blick am Abend . A visual odyssey through the world s perpetual absurdity. At the same time, an image of our modern society emerges. Newspapers no longer serve solely to convey information, but also to give the reader a certain type of entertainment. And so it comes about that we are confronted with a load of rubbish every day. The diary helps me to digest and process this trash. As with the daily news, I had to produce on a daily basis. This is also about the working process, and work experience. Fun factor 100%. The absurd articles that give me my inspiration for this publication come from the newspaper Blick am Abend. Exhibition and book Vertiginous Parallels From November 14 to December 4, 2014, Elac Gallery presents Vertige des correspondances (Vertiginous parallels), an exhibition by ECAL s Fine Arts Master students, while ECAL launches an eponymous publication. The show and the book are the twofold outcome of a research project directed by Julien Fronsacq with the support of HES-SO/University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland. The works of Charles Blanc-Gatti (1890-1966) are largely unknown. In his search for synesthetic harmony, this musicalist painter also played with a loss of spatial markers. These two sides of Blanc-Gatti s art are explored in this project, through the relationship the artist entertained with the alpine space. The show presents a novel selection of artworks and documents by Charles Blanc-Gatti, together with works by student-researchers Jérôme Baccaglio, Anaïs Defago, Arthur Fouray, Julien Gremaud, Marine Julié, Emanuele Marcuccio, Rubén Valdez and Linda Voorwinde. Vertiginous Parallels is also a bilingual (FR/EN) publication comprising 188 pages with 85 reproductions from Blanc-Gatti s archives. Published by ECAL and distributed by Presses du réel, the book is edited by Julien Fronsacq in collaboration with Lucile Dupraz, with graphic design by Marietta Eugster and Teo Schifferli, and photographs by Jonas Marguet. Experts from various fields have contributed essays, including the music specialist Maxime Guitton, the art historian and curator Gallien Déjean, the cinema historian Teresa Castro, the artist and historian of medicine Jelena Martinovic, and the art historian and modern danse specialist Sarah Burkhalter. Documents and works by Charles Blanc-Gatti courtesy the Swiss Film Archive, the Swiss Institute for Art Research (SIK-ISEA) and the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne.

Exhibition and book "Ecal Photography" The exhibition offers a selection of works produced by 58 young talents during their Photography Bachelor curriculum at ECAL. All these images were chosen by exhibition curator Nathalie Herschdorfer, who has developed several internationally acclaimed projects around emerging photography, as well as by Milo Keller, head of the Photography programme at ECAL, and Alexis Georgacopoulos, ECAL director. The scenography of the exhibition is created especially by Swiss designer Adrien Rovero. The “ECAL Photography” book (296 pages, 385 images) supports this event. This book is produced by art publishers Hatje Cantz, with a worldwide reputation for their catalogue of publications on photography. An art school is an image factory. New Handwriting Tools Job Wouters aka Letman, well known for its lettering artworks, took out of his suitcase pencils and markers, as well as strange utensils much different than a typical pen and asked to his students to create, produce or divert objects from their original function to turn them into new handwriting tools. Students brought back plastic fans, water hoses, electric toothbrush, treadmills, and other uncommon objects to generate their very own handwriting machines. After a lot of trial-and-error experimentation, specific gestures and choregraphies, these newly constructed DIY machines brought about a unique aesthetic and a variety of proportion in the letter forms they produced. The results included experimental videos, books, posters, and photographs. In conclusion, the project facilitated a fun and productive week. New collaboration ECAL/Vacheron Constantin,06.03.2013,Auditorium Leenaards, ECAL With the generous support of Vacheron Constantin, ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, featuring among the world s top ten universities of art and design, is resuming the former MAS in Luxury Industry and Design, henceforth provided as the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship. Under this new heading, the programme intends to highlight various types of know-how and give young industrial designers the opportunity to investigate, over the course of a year, sectors of excellence as diverse as the arts & crafts, fine watch-making, tableware or specific techniques using noble materials. The contribution of such as prestigious manufacture as Vacheron Constantin, which has shone over the watchmaking industry for more than 250 years and is actively involved in promoting outstanding craftsmen, is a token of the richness of this curriculum and ensures its continuity. Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship Switzerland is a privileged country in terms of know-how in the field of luxury. Building on this tradition, this Master of Advanced Studies is for the holders of a Bachelor or Master s degree wishing to further their knowledge in industrial design and investigate sectors of excellence as diverse as fine watch-making, tableware or specific techniques using noble materials. Through collaborations with prestigious brands – some with a century-old heritage – and workshops provided by major actors on the international scene, students experiment all production stages: from designing an object to its completion, via 3D rendering or photography. They also have the benefit of brand identity analyses and conferences delivered by experts in the field, as well as tours of luxury goods manufacturers. Many projects are singled out by partner companies to be produced, exhibited and published in the international press. After one year at ECAL, the students are able to submit a varied portfolio to the highest professional standards. Highly sought after by international agencies and world-leading companies, they also often have the opportunity of simultaneously establishing their own business. Graduates are frequently offered internship opportunities right at the end of their curriculum – often leading to steady employment. EXHIBITION OF THE PRIX IMAGES VEVEY X ECAL: LEA SBLANDANO,24.09–21.12.2025,L Appartement – Espace Images Vevey From 24 September to 21 December 2025, as part of L Appartement – Espace Images Vevey, Lea Sblandano, winner of the Prix Images Vevey x ECAL 2024, presents Neijuan, her Bachelor Photography project. The Images Vevey × ECAL Prize was created in 2021 to strengthen the collaboration between the two institutions. Each year, it offers a graduate from ECAL s Bachelor or Master Photography programme a first solo exhibition opportunity. The awarded project is presented as a monographic exhibition by Images Vevey, either during its biennale or in its permanent space. Winner of the Images Vevey × ECAL Prize 2024, presents Neijuan, a project developed during her Bachelor in Photography at ECAL. “Neijuan,” a Mandarin slang word meaning “involution,” refers to a withdrawal into oneself, a symptom of an increasingly fast and competitive society. Through a documentary and collaborative approach, the artist follows a group of people she met online in forums, video games and chat platforms, where new identities emerge outside the norms of the physical world. The exhibition unfolds across three spaces: The Corridor, a threshold between the real and the virtual, combining portraits and urban landscapes. The Living Room, where the Neijuan book mock-up revisits key images of her research, oscillating between avatars, Asian megacities and reflections on the sexualisation of bodies. The Cinema, an immersive installation of nine screens showing videos, webcams and avatars, centred on Kei, a virtual roommate living in Japan. This work blurs the boundaries between real and virtual, questioning connected solitude, fragmented identities and the transformation of intimate spaces.DATES & SCHEDULE24.09–21.12.2025 2 pm–6 pm Wednesday to Sunday Free entryVENUEL Appartement – Espace Images Vevey Gare CFF de Vevey Hall principal (2e étage)OPENINGWednesday, September 24, 2025, 6 pmWEBSITEimages.chGUIDED TOUROctober 9, November 6, December 4, 2025

Documentary film workshop with Alessandro Comodin The 2025 documentary film workshop for 2nd year students was lead by french italian director Alessandro Comodin. Head of workshop: "This year, there s been a lot of talk about pebbles on tiles and eggs dangerously stuffed into jeans pockets. The pebbles, I confess, were me, Alessandro Comodin, a forty-something Italian director, who had thrown them at the windows of my new apprentice filmmakers. It was my mission, or so I interpreted it. Yes, I was the one who threw those pebbles, because I ve always enjoyed being disturbed by a friend who might have dropped by unexpectedly, because he or she didn t know what better to do than to come to my house. So, as so often with the gifts we give, it s the ones we d like to receive, I took the liberty of getting young people off their sofas and into the dark and magical world of documentaries. Or that they might simply open the windows without fear. The eggs, on the other hand, were the students projects. The image of the egg may be banal, but it s been a nutritional staple since long before the happy experience of Noah s Ark, and not to displease vegans or allergy sufferers, because eggs were never to be eaten or broken, just put in your pocket and kept there. A highly perilous exercise, but you can t be a filmmaker s apprentice without an acute awareness of the passage of time and the fragility of appearances. Let me conclude with a quote from Julio Cortazar. In 1980, he was invited to give a series of lectures to students at Berkeley. At one point he said that an idea is like a bird that sneaks in through the window; you never know when it s going to fly in, and it s not easy to catch it. I would add that you still need to have your windows open. We ve learned that this year, that it s really nice to open your windows a little bit every day, even at night, because a bird might come in or a friend might throw a pebble in, and you never know when that pebble might turn into an egg." Two ECAL photographers honoured with the Dior Prize for Photography 2025 Sara de Brito Faustino and Aline Savioz, respectively a graduate and student of the Bachelor s programme in Photography at ECAL, are among the winners of the 2025 edition of the prestigious Dior Prize for Photography and Visual Arts for Young Talents. Organised by Dior in collaboration with LUMA Arles and the Ecole Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie (ENSP), this prestigious award celebrates the next generation of international contemporary photographers. Since its creation in 2018, the Prix Dior has supported the unique perspectives of young artists from leading art and photography schools around the world. Following a rigorous selection process, the ten winners are invited to produce a new work based on the theme ‘Face-to-Face . The winners works, including those by Sara De Brito Faustino and Aline Savioz, are presented in a group exhibition at LUMA Arles as part of the Rencontres de la Photographie until 5 October 2025. This exceptional visibility allows these young talents to engage with an international audience of contemporary photography enthusiasts. Exhibition From 5 July to 5 October 2025 La Lampisterie, Luma Arles prix-dior.luma.orgAlien Love Call by Aline Savioz Created in 2024, Alien Love Call draws inspiration from romantic ideals and the collective imagination shaped by 1950s cinema, 1970s design and popular culture codes, particularly those of science fiction. This project is set in a fictional and fantastical universe, where fulfilment and lightness intertwine. Composed of six images staged and shot in medium format film, the series brings to life a retro-futuristic fiction, telling a love story between two aliens. It explores nostalgia for the future, that paradoxical feeling of attachment to a time we have never known, when we projected an idealised future. Alien Love Call evokes this unique melancholy and creates a visual refuge where romance blossoms in a setting from another time, both familiar and unreal. Through the images, we follow the protagonists in the moments leading up to their meeting, until their rendezvous at the Jazz Club, animated by a caricatured trumpet player in a cinematic atmosphere. @saviozalA Home With No Roof by Sara De Brito Faustino The place where I grew up was a mixture of strangeness and familiarity. It should have been a refuge, but it was the scene of painful moments. Uncomfortable and dysfunctional, it bears the traces of traumas that I can hardly remember, except for deep scars. The only remnants are in the decor of my current flat. This project stems from that, using 1:15 scale models of my house to explore this history in a new light. By reconstructing the space in miniature, I am able to confront it with distance. These scenes become a dialogue with my traumas. The confrontation takes place through reduced objects, body sculptures and plays on scale. My flat becomes a hybrid place, somewhere between shelter and threat. The images convey the identity of a young girl in the making, growing up in imbalance. By deconstructing and reconstructing, bodies become objects, and vice versa. I am both subject and object in this space, confronting what has shaped me. Photography becomes catharsis, bringing me closer to a blurred past. A Home With No Roof questions what it means to face one s history: a silent dialogue to reconcile the intimate. The series is a face-to-face encounter with my traumas, allowing me to become a healthy adult. @colddaily

Image Creation BA1S2 – Insta Books In the age of social media, Instagram has become a true space for graphic experimentation. This semester, first-year Graphic Design students created a printed edition of at least 100 pages, exploring the question: what does it mean to design for Instagram? Through this investigation, they examined the platform s visual codes, its attention-driven dynamics, and the graphic forms it inspires. Each project reflects on how these creations can be translated, extended, or reinterpreted in the digital space. Balancing printed matter and online presence, these works outline new ways of inhabiting both images and networks.

Manor Cultural Prize 2026 awarded to Lucas Erin Congratulations to artist Lucas Erin, ECAL graduate, who has been awarded the 2025 Manor Cultural Prize for the canton of Vaud. The jury was impressed by his approach, both precise and poetic. Created in 1982 to support emerging Swiss talent, the Manor Cultural Prize is awarded every two years by a jury of experts. Presented at a key moment in the careers of young artists, the prize offers significant momentum for their work and contributes to the promotion of contemporary art in the canton of Vaud. The award also includes a solo museum exhibition at MCBA and the publication of a catalogue. Born in 1990 in Clamart, France, Lucas Erin holds a Master s degree in Visual Arts from ECAL, where he also worked as a teaching assistant for several years. His practice spans installation, sculpture and video. Deeply interested in the notion of contact, as traced through objects, and attentive to the shifting boundary between interior and exterior, Lucas Erin explores what succeeds or fails in the act of exchange. Through carefully constructed arrangements, found objects and meticulously crafted sculptures, he creates spaces rich with overlapping histories and emerging narratives. Influenced by thinkers of creolisation, his process relies on association, recovery and displacement to allow new meanings to emerge within the exhibition space. His work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions in Switzerland and France, and has also been featured in numerous group shows. Between 2013 and 2020, he was actively involved in the independent art scene as co-founder of Happy Baby Gallery in Crissier, a team member of La Colonie in Paris, and a collaborator on various curatorial projects between Paris and Lausanne. The artist will present a solo exhibition in the Project Space at MCBA in autumn 2026, accompanied by a publication. lucaserin.com @_lucas.erin_

Screen Design 2024 Websites developed over a semester according to a book chosen by the students as part of Harry Bloch s Screen Design course, second year Bachelor of Visual Communication. Le Vieux qui lisait des romans d amour An interpretation of the novel by Chilean author Luis Sepúlveda, this site immerses you in the small Amazonian town of El Idilio. The experience invites you to live the hunt led by Antonio José Bolívar, in search of a Tigrillo that has killed a man. by Nyria Graber, Carolina Crivelli The Consolations of the Forest An interpretation of Sylvain Tesson s story, this website explores the experience of solitude and withdrawal from the world in a cabin on the shores of Lake Baikal. The students worked around the notion of time passing and the repetition of daily gestures, translating the slowness, contemplation and cyclical rhythm of life in isolation. by Yann Müller, Maeva Chanson The Suitcase Interpretation of Sergei Dovlatov s book, in which the main character rediscovers the suitcase with which he left the USSR. The site explores the idea of interstices: openings through which the objects in the suitcase emerge, but also spaces where forbidden Soviet alternative culture came to life. by Jonathan Vögele, Simeon Dubuis

ECAL × Images Vevey Lecture - Rineke Dijkstra,07.05.2025,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL ECAL welcomes Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra for a talk on her contemporary approach to portraiture. Since the early 1990s, Rineke Dijkstra has produced a complex body of photographic and video work, offering a contemporary take on the genre of portraiture. Her large-scale color photographs and videos, mainly of young, typically adolescent subjects, present subtle and minimal contextual details, encouraging us to focus on the exchange between photographer and subject, and on the relationship between viewer and viewed. Born in The Netherlands, in 1959, Dijkstra studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. She has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Johannes Vermeer Prijs (2020), the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography (2017), SPECTRUM – International Prize for Photography of Stiftung Niedersachsen (2017), and The Citibank Private Bank Photography Prize (1999). Over the past three decades, she has exhibited her work in renowned institutions around the world, including the Art Institute of Chicago (2001), Jeu de Paume in Paris (2005), La Caixa in Barcelona (2005), Fotomuseum Winterthur (2005), Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (2006), Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco (2012), the Solomon R. Folklore Fusion Folklore Fusion – a CGI character project developed by students in Bachelor Media & Interaction Design at ECAL, exploring the creative collision between Japanese and Swiss folklore through the lens of contemporary visual storytelling. Through the immense popularity of anime, manga, or global phenomena, Japanese narratives and visuals have conquered the world, shaping pop culture and popularizing themes from Japanese folklore in Western media. In this context, Folklore Fusion explores the creative interplay between tradition and modern visual storytelling with a cutting-edge CGI character project. After an intense trip through Tokyo s vibrant neighborhoods, rich history, architecture, and local legends, ECAL Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students created the Swijūs—fusion of “switzerland” and “Kai-Jū”—hybrid creatures blending Japanese and Swiss folklore. Each student focused on a specific district of Tokyo, merging its cultural and architectural identity with legendary figures from both traditions to craft unique narratives. By studying clichés and stereotypes, they reinterpreted cultural symbols to create an unexpected fusion between the two worlds. Behind a seemingly naive approach, Folklore Fusion deeply investigates the capabilities of modular design system in both storytelling and visual language, following detailed creation guidelines that ensure balance between the two folklores. Much like a successful phenomenon expanding its range of media, the project plays with multiple cross-media formats that reflect how popular culture circulates in the digital age. It features an authentic trading card game (TCG) collection that easily fits into other existing decks, with various levels of rarity and immersive augmented reality (AR) content that brings the Swijūs to life. A magazine-style printed edition documents research inspirations, while an interactive online map allows exploration of a reimagined Tokyo where each Swijū watches over its district. Beyond paying homage and respect to Japanese culture, Folklore Fusion and its Swijū become imaginary artifacts of an era marked by cross-cultural influences and shared narratives.Magazine of Fusion Explore the bilingual Folklore Fusion Japanese-English edition, a magazine-style book printed with metallic pantone. Serving as a visual archive, it compiles research, iconic imagery, and analyses to extend the project.
