ECAL × OFFECCT AT 3 days of design Event
ECAL × OFFECCT AT 3 days of design

ECAL × OFFECCT AT 3 days of design,18–20.06.2025,Copenhagen ECAL is taking part in the 2025 edition of 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen with the project Sound & Vision, created in collaboration with Swedish brand Offecct. As the modern workspace and living environment trend towards open-plan designs, the need for versatile acoustic solutions have regained momentum. Offecct has teamed up with students part of Master Product Design from ECAL, led by course tutor Camille Blin, to reinterpret the acoustic room divider, an essential tool in structuring both our spaces and our ideas. Acoustics have been a steady part of Offecct s portfolio since the early 2000s, and it is time for this category to question its own versatility and its influence on the well-being of our workplaces. These projects do more than divide space: they reinterpret familiar gestures, reveal the poetry of modest materials, and offer sensitive responses to the needs of the contemporary office. Together, they form a landscape of objects that are both technical and adaptable, where every separation becomes an opportunity for expression, comfort, and reinvention of the workplace.VENUEAmbassaden Henrik Ibsens gate 48, via Løkkeveien/Hansteens gtDATES & SCHEDULEFrom 18 to 20 June 2025HEAD OF PROGRAMMEWEBSITE3daysofdesign.dkSTUDENTS, , , , , , , ASSISTANTOPENING18 June at 4pmPARTNERSFLOKK DESIGN Marianne Sælid, Vice President, Design Managment Oscar Shu Hao Kwong, Designer, Design Managment Special Thanks To: Christian Lodgaard OFFECCT Magdalena Borowiec, Brand Manager Øystein Austad, Design Manager offecct.flokk.com

ECAL label for the Vaud Parliament wine Article
ECAL label for the Vaud Parliament wine

ECAL label for the Vaud Parliament wine To celebrate the collaboration between the three branches of government, the Vaud Parliament is unveiling its very first vintage wine – adorned with a label designed by ECAL. For the first time in the canton of Vaud, a wine of the Vaud Parliament has been bottled to celebrate the joint work of the legislative, executive and judicial branches. On this occasion, the institutions called upon the talent of ECAL s Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Type Design students to create a symbolic and contemporary label. The selected label, entitled Les Trois Portes, was designed by Léa Verboux. Its design pays tribute to the former entrance of the Parliament and its architecture, composed of three doors, while also evoking the separation of the three powers. To highlight the design, the label is printed directly onto the bottle using a digital printing process carried out by the company Univerre at its site in Bioley-Orjulaz, Vaud. This project once again illustrates ECAL s commitment to forging links with public and cultural institutions in the canton, while offering its students opportunities to bring their creativity to life through concrete projects.

ECAL × Nnormal

ECAL × Nnormal,28.05.2025,Milan ECAL teams up with trail running brand NNormal for a unique photography project that blends visual exploration with pushing physical and creative boundaries. Inspired by the mountains, this collaboration invites students to challenge conventions through technical precision, immersion in nature and bold imagination. In September 2024, ECAL launched a unique photographic collaboration with NNormal, the trail running brand founded by Kilian Jornet. Under the guidance of Nicolas Poillot and Régis Tosetti, students from the Bachelor Photography programme explored a shared territory between performance, nature and visual creation. Inspired by the demands of trail running and the power of alpine landscapes, they developed works that blend technical precision, creative freedom and a deep sensitivity to the natural world. Through this experience, the mountains became both the setting and subject of an imagination shaped by effort, light, materials and the unexpected. VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS Event
VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS

VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS,04–13.04.2025,Nyon As guest of honour at the 56th edition of the Visions du Réel festival in Nyon, filmmaker Raoul Peck will be giving a masterclass on Tuesday 8 April, organised in partnership with the Cinémathèque suisse. The programme also includes five films by the ECAL s Cinema Department and alumni. MASTERCLASS: RAOUL PECK Filmmaker, Haiti Born in Haiti in 1953, and raised in Congo, New York, France and Germany, Raoul Peck is one of the most important filmmakers of the late 20th and early 21st century. Over the course of the last forty years, the filmmaker has anchored his complex body of work, which includes internationally acclaimed feature films and documentaries, in a deep political commitment. The genesis of his cinematographic tales stems in equal measure from his multicultural personal experience, his journey as an activist, and what he refers to as a “Marxist reading” of the global economy. An indefatigable narrator of tales as seen from the viewpoint of those subject to domination, Raoul Peck has also questioned the links to capitalism in his own personal history, haunted by the ghosts of colonialism. His films examine omissions from official Western history, shining a light on aspects ignored by this account, often sketching a portrait of politicians or artists who have openly deconstructed it, such as Patrice Lumumba in Lumumba, La Mort du prophète, a feature film released in 1990, followed bythedocumentary Lumumba (2000), James Baldwin in I Am Not Your Negro (2016), and, most recently, Ernest Cole with Ernest Cole: Lost and Found (2024). Summoning the past to examine the present and rejecting any call to neutrality, Raoul Peck s work is a reinvention of activist cinema, which he transforms using a cinematographic, poetic and highly subjective language, freely intermingling genres and formats. Exterminate All The Brutes, a hybrid series in four parts (produced by HBO) – which will also be screened during the Festival – is a perfect example of this: it is a journey back in time, a radical re-examination of the history of European colonialism, from America to Africa, using personal, visual and literary narration to starkly revisit the darkest hours in human history right up to the present day. It won a Peabody Award in 2022, and was also the subject of a critical and literary essay. An event in collaboration with the Cinémathèque suisse. Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025 ECAL x Ceramaret At the invitation of Watches and Wonders Geneva, ECAL will present a brand-new project in partnership with Ceramaret, a leading Swiss company in the manufacture and high-precision machining of technical ceramics. To mark the occasion, a selection of five jewellery and bracelet designs will be on display at the LAB, a venue dedicated to innovation and design. Thanks to this first collaboration with the Neuchâtel-based manufacturer, students in MAS Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship got to discover a state-of-the-art machine park. Renowned for developing and producing components for the luxury watchmaking industry, Ceramaret s teams contributed their expertise to this ambitious research. Combining innovation with creativity, the project brings together the know-how of specialised engineers in materials science and the boundless inventiveness of an up-and-coming generation of designers. Following the presentation of the students 15 concepts, five designs were selected and prototyped in technical ceramics, using additive technologies – a 3D printing process that provides the possibility to create intricate, previously unimaginable shapes. This collection, including bracelets inspired by fine watchmaking and innovative jewellery designs, draws its inspiration as much from the beauty of organic forms as from the complexity of systems derived from engineering. ECAL × SDOL, Horizon Ouest, Regards sur la métamorphose urbaine Project
ECAL × SDOL, Horizon Ouest, Regards sur la métamorphose urbaine

ECAL × SDOL, Horizon Ouest, Regards sur la métamorphose urbaine New transport infrastructure is emerging, while former industrial wastelands are giving way to modern buildings and redesigned outdoor spaces. Gradually, residents are moving into these new neighborhoods and adopting new habits.  To capture the first moments of life in these spaces, the association "Ouest lausannois: Prix Wakker 2011" has invited second-year students from the ECAL Bachelor of Photography program to observe them throughout 2024. This project highlights 18 ongoing construction sites or recently completed neighborhoods. Through their perspectives, the students offer original approaches to discovering, understanding, and appropriating these new spaces.  Photography maintains a unique relationship with the world around us, as it often depends on it. Far from merely documenting reality in a strict sense, it has the power to transfigure and reveal the invisible or the unspeakable. This is the approach adopted by the ECAL photography students at the request of the "Ouest lausannois: Prix Wakker 2011" association, as they explored various territories in western Lausanne. As part of this commission, each student was randomly assigned a specific location—be it a new neighborhood, a construction site, or a distinctive building—on which they worked over an academic year. Faced with spaces that were sometimes unphotogenic or even resistant to imagery, the challenge was to look beyond appearances, to resonate with these places in order to grasp their unique dynamics. The photographs question our perception of these recent landscapes and bear witness to the human activity unfolding within them. What do they reveal about our ways of living and moving? Who are the people inhabiting these spaces? What new landscapes emerge from these rapid transformations?  Through approaches that are sometimes sensitive and intimate, sometimes detached and analytical, or even driven by a formal fascination with the objects captured, the works presented reveal the density and diversity of everyday life. They bring forth a poetic vision of the city, inviting us to consider these territories not merely as functional backdrops but as fully-fledged spaces, rich with history, form, and identity—fluid and multifaceted, just like those who inhabit them.

ECAL Night Live Project
ECAL Night Live

ECAL Night Live During an intensive week, first-year students from the Visual Communication department at ECAL had the opportunity to create and produce the first edition of ECAL Night Live. The goal was to design a show inspired by satirical television formats. Divided into multidisciplinary teams—including students from the Bachelor programs in Graphic Design, Media & Interaction Design, and Photography—they collaborated to create all the content, set design, and visual identity of the show, delivering a fully homemade project in record time. The main theme revolved around self-mockery, targeting the visual communication professions, students, and the institution itself, with a subtle touch of current events. This project was supervised by Vincent Veillon and Paul Walther, directors of the RTS show 52 Minutes, as well as Florian Pittet, a digital scenography expert who guided the creation of the show s set design.

ECAL LECTURE – JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC Event
ECAL LECTURE – JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC

ECAL LECTURE – JEAN-CHARLES DE CASTELBAJAC,18.03.2025,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL An avant-garde designer and artist, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac anticipated what today constitutes the basis of new creation: art and fashion, detour and collaboration. Multi-disciplinary work of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac - art, fashion and design - revolves around a short chromatic range of blue, yellow and red, one of the finest representations of which was to dress Pope John Paul II, bishops and priests for the 1997 World Youth Day. Passionate about heraldry, the science of coats of arms, vexillology, the science of flags, semiotics, the study of signs, pop art and the world of childhood, his art and fashion bring together these dualities: the epic, the historic, the traditional and the alternative. He has collaborated with many artists, including Keith Haring, Lady Gaga, Robert Mapplethorpe, Pedro Winter and Pharrell Williams. He began his career as a designer alongside his mother, setting up Ko & Co in Limoges. His first obvious garment was a coat cut from his boarding-school blanket, as well as clothes made from mops, thus launching the concept of upcycling. He went on to found the Jean-Charles de Castelbajac fashion house in 1978. As early as the 1980s, he anticipated the current decompartmentalization of art and fashion by collaborating with artists of all disciplines on his shows: musicians, photographers and visual artists. He worked with Miquel Barceló, Ben and Robert Combas to create tableau dresses, with Robert Mapplethorpe, Keith Haring and Cindy Sherman to create invitations for his shows, and with Malcolm McLaren to create the music for his shows. In 1986, he was exhibited at New York s Fashion Institute and Technology. In 2006, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, then at the Musée Galliera in Paris in 2007. Also an artist, he created a 3700 m2 fresco for Orly airport in Paris in 2015. In September 2018, he created a monumental work for the Biennale des antiquaires de Paris at the Grand Palais. From 2018 to 2022, he is artistic director of United Colors of Benetton. His artistic work is the subject of an exhibition entitled Le Peuple de Demain at the children s gallery of the Centre Pompidou in 2021-2022, presented at the West Bund Museum in Shanghai and at the Centre Pompidou Malaga in 2023. In 2022, he will also be present at the Mobilier National with the scenography for the exhibition No taste for bad taste, retracing 40 years of French design, and with a carte blanche entitled L atour d assises, focusing on French styles. In June 2024, he installs a 15-metre trellis sculpture on the wall of the Société de Géographie in Paris, called “L Ange Géographe”. He was chosen by the Diocese of Paris to design the liturgical vestments and ornaments for the reopening of Notre-Dame de Paris in December 2024.DATES & SCHEDULE18.03.2025 6pm Free entryVENUEIKEA Auditorium, ECALWEBSITEjeancharlesdecastelbajac.com

ECAL at Art Genève Event
ECAL at Art Genève

ECAL at Art Genève,30.01–02.02.2025,Palexpo, Geneva For Art Genève 2025, Bachelor Fine Arts students have come up with ‘Dont Be Happy, Worry , a creation that grew out of a workshop given by the American artist Kenneth Goldsmith. This collaborative project by ECAL Bachelor Fine Arts students challenges conventional perspectives on art and meaning. Inspired by an intense and thought-provoking workshop by Kenneth Goldsmith, the students explored subtle signs of life and everyday details, transforming wandering thoughts into a carpet: not as a design, but as a detour; not as a statement, but as a collection of overlooked absurdities. It s a soft landing for stray thoughts, misplaced objects, and the kind of meaning that sneaks up on you, waiting to trip you up when you least expect it. Kenneth Goldsmith is an American poet, artist and critic, founder of the online archive ubuweb.com and professor at University of Pennsylvania. His writing is motivated by his own 2007 manifesto “Uncreative Writing” and is often a collage of found material. He s the author of books and critical texts, radio shows and installations and was appointed Moma s first Poet Laureate.DATES AND SCHEDULES30.01–02.02.2025 12pm to 9pm except Thursday and Sunday from 12pm to 7pmVENUEPalexpo, GenèveWEBSITEartgenèveOPENINGThursday, January 30, 2025, 2-9 pm by invitationSTUDENTS, , , , , , , , , , , , , Lisa Okhrimchuk, INVITED ARTISTKenneth GoldsmithHEAD OF PROGRAMME

ECAL x AGO - Seoul Highlights Project
ECAL x AGO - Seoul Highlights

ECAL x AGO - Seoul Highlights AGO Lighting has come together with ECAL Bachelor students in Industrial Design, under the guidance of Swiss designer Adrien Rovero, to conceive a collection of lighting installations to be used in public places such as museums, hotel lobbies, coffee bar and so on. Focusing primarily on the spatial aspect of light, our approach was to design lighting structures based on components supplied by AGO and inspired by the fabric of Seoul, rather than creating mere lamps. We believe that lighting defines spaces. The importance of light in every space is essential, which is why we favor lighting as the starting point when building a space. Moreover, most of AGO Lighting collections offer lighting options that can be specified by architects and designers. The challenge we set ourselves was to reimagine the chandelier – an object that lends a distinctive status to a space, while fulfilling its initial purpose of diffusing functional light. ÉVÉNEMENTS LIÉSECAL students had to explore and identify potential landmarks scattered around Seoul many vibrant districts – from Jongno, the historic center of Seoul, and coveted Gangnam, to Mapo and Dasan-ro industrial heritage. Based on their findings, they designed various lighting typologies, taking into account the specific characteristics of each venue and setting; such as a light-pole system inspired by the typical Euljiro District electric street pylons overloaded with cables; a lamp at the crossroads of avant-garde streetwear and futuristic clothing; a planter with an integrated luminaire to highlight plants at the botanical garden; a lighting structure that can host a full table or up to a three-seater sofa underneath its lights; and a high table that bring people together under its gentle light. Presented for the first time at Seochon Lounge, operated by Hanok Heritage Preservation Division of Urban Regeneration Office and Swiss Embassy in Korea in collaboration with Design Press. To explore all the final projects in detail, visit the project website: This project was made possible with the generous support of the Summer University program of the Board of Higher Education (DGES) – State of Vaud.

Vulcan is inspired by the work of Haroun Tazieff and the couple Katia and Maurice Krafft, and is an extension of a reflection begun during my thesis on the reconstruction of myths using digital tools. ECAL X KVADRAT - SUIT UP Project
ECAL X KVADRAT - SUIT UP

ECAL X KVADRAT - SUIT UP For this project, the students had to design a seat, or rather requalify and rehabilitate a chair or armchair using existing models such as the monobloc, aluminium bistro chair, or deck chair, as the base structure. Employing Kvadrat upholstery textiles, the designs had to be reversible, meaning it should not alter the existing structure. While the original function of the chair could be maintained or altered, the proposals aimed to improved the comfort and aesthetic character of the seats. RAVIOLI CHAIR by The entire project aims to enhance an affordable chair – the Transat – by bringing the chair, which is often associated with being "accessible, practical, for outdoor use," indoors and giving it a more unique and comfortable design. Using fabrics, padding materials, and a sewing machine, where technique plays a central role, the focus is on an intensive exploration of different ways to manipulate textiles in order to create an exceptional quilted pattern. The chair is completely covered, so the original shape disappears, and no association with the Transat can be made. The Transat is thus used as a framework to create a new indoor lounge chair. Some say that the best product [sustainability speaking] is the one that already exists. SUIT UP aimed to make us reflect on our relationship with furniture, the comfort it brings us and the legacy of upholstered furniture; to take a critical look at how these products are manufactured, distributed, enjoyed and discarded today. Following a selection of the projects.Strapp by Strapp utilizes the existing wooden frame of the deck chair to hold two sets of fabric loops tactfully sewn and interwoven with each other. "Strapp" can be mounted onto the chair frame during its assembly, thus becoming an integral part of the chair. The woven structure appears flat but adjusts comfortably to the person seated. The Strapp design was created to enhance the comfort of the deck chair. The material used is a cool wool upholstery fabric, making the seat soft and cozy. YUPPIE CHAIR by Yuppie Chair is a project aimed at creating a cover for the monobloc chair, thus transforming this outdoor chair into an indoor chair. The project draws more inspiration from the fashion world, as in its initial phase, it was oriented toward bridal gowns. The goal was to design a cover inspired by the yuppie style of the 1980s, using Kvadrat upholstery fabric. It was necessary to find a way to merge the language of fashion with furniture. The cinching detail evokes how tailored jackets are themselves cinched.Link by Link is a conference chair cover. Designed to instantly transform an aluminum chair into a comfortable, practical chair that can be connected to other chairs. A zipper linking the chairs allows them to be attached, providing safety and organization during gatherings at events.SIENNE by Sienne is a cover that easily fits over aluminum terrace chairs to transform them into indoor armchairs during the winter months. Thanks to two zippers, the cover can be adjusted to take shape. The edges fold over the sides, providing wide and comfortable armrests.VANO by Vano is a waterproof cover specifically designed to fit aluminum bistro-style chairs. Composed of two parts, it retains the stackability of the original chair while adding extra comfort. Terrace enthusiasts can once again enjoy the pleasure of savoring their drinks outdoors. The toggle buttons create an ingenious fastening system that gives the chair its enveloping appearance.

ECAL at Swiss Photomonth Event
ECAL at Swiss Photomonth

ECAL at Swiss Photomonth,03.10.2024,ECAL, Renens ECAL presents “We Do The Rest”, a performative event on the occasion of Swiss Photomonth. “We Do The Rest” is a performative event that questions photographic limits. Together with artist Augustin Lignier, students in the Master of Photography program at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne invite the public to an exceptional evening in their school s monumental hall. From image capture to distribution, “We Do The Rest” explores the notions of effort and bodily constraint in contemporary photographic mechanics. Through a series of sometimes spectacular, sometimes discreet and minimal performances, students in the Master of Photography program at ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne question, through their gestures and actions, the structure of image-making. From apnea photography to the confinement of framing, from mental images to the bubbles of social networks, all the projects test photographic limits through the body. The project, directed by artist Augustin Lignier, revisits the radical performances of the 60s in the digital age, when audiences are mainly virtual and relationships reduced to pixels. Through still images and videos, through words, movements and sounds performed for one evening only in the monumental hall of the ECAL, we invite you to experience photography differently, to immerse yourself in these simulations, for real. And it s up to you to press the shutter...VENUEECAL Avenue du Temple 5 1020 RenensDATES & SCHEDULE03.10.2024 6pm–8.45pmWEBSITEswissphotomonth.chART DIRECTION, , HEAD OF PROGRAMMESTUDENTS, , , , , , , , , , , ,

ECAL x AREA OF WORK - CO-EXISTENCE Project
ECAL x AREA OF WORK - CO-EXISTENCE

ECAL x AREA OF WORK - CO-EXISTENCE ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has teamed up with Paris-based studio Area of Work at Paris Photo to present CO-EXISTENCE, a monumental immersive installation in the heart of Paris s 11th arrondissement, from 7 to 9 November 2024. In a large metropolis, a small, seemingly empty apartment reveals discreet traces of human presence. On another scale, a conquering population manifests itself. Wings flap, slime trails, antennae shivers... In the industrial setting of the former Garage République in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, CO-EXISTENCE showcases a living cohabitation through a sequence of artificial images created using Computer Generated Imagery (CGI). These spectacular yet intimate photo-realistic projections highlight the imperceptible, the infra- thin, and the invisible, blurring the scales between micro and macro. Developed during three series of workshops conducted from 2023 to autumn 2024 by Area of Work, CO- EXISTENCE bears witness to the technical and artistic skills that are honed within the ECAL MA Photography. These workshops enabled students to transpose their photographic skills into the virtual space of 3D graphics to understand the temporal, artistic, and commercial issues involved in creating CGI. ‘This collaboration offered ECAL students an introduction to the tools and possibilities of 3D graphics, exploring their integration into the processes of creating photorealistic and hyper-realistic images, while highlighting the importance of the artistic and cinematographic dimensions that are at the heart of our identity. – Amine Ghorab & Scott Renau, Area of Work, Paris. Founded in Paris in 2018 by artists and directors Amine Ghorab and Scott Renau, Area of Work is known for its distinctive contemporary visual narratives, blending graphic framing and rigorous photographic direction. ECAL at Festival Images Vevey Event
ECAL at Festival Images Vevey

ECAL at Festival Images Vevey,07–29.09.2024,Vevey From September 7 to 29, graduates of ECAL s Bachelor and Master of Photography programs present their work at the Festival Images Vevey. VENUEVeveyDATES & SCHEDULEFrom September 7 to 29, 2024WEBSITEimages.chFrom September 7 to 29, 2024, photography in all its forms takes over the streets of Vevey, invades the parks and strolls along the shores of the lake. For three weeks, the Festival Images Vevey transforms the small town on the Riviera and welcomes a wide audience. This year, four ECAL graduates are part of the program. Positive Illusions Diploma project by , Master Photography graduate With this project , Benjamin Freedman is reconstructing his childhood memories using CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). The artist diverts this technology, mostly used in films and video games, which requires close involvement in the creation of every object, detail and lighting. Freedman meticulously reconstructs a family roadtrip between Montreal and Maine in the United States in 1999, reproducing his point of view at the age of nine. Created for the Boéland site near the Swiss Museum of Games, the installation explores how memory shapes, transforms and simulates reality. Positive Illusions plunges nostalgically into the joyous world of childhood, fragmented by memory and reassembled by technology. Cash Me Online Diploma project by , Master Photography graduate Cash Me Online is a satirical project combining photography, performance and social media footage. Amandine Kuhlmann creates a hyper-feminine alter ego that she embodies online and during performances to achieve viral fame. She exaggerates her poses, imitates TikTok and Instagram trends and dramatizes her everyday life to make herself noticed. The artist reappropriates videos, drawing on the suggestions of her algorithm and the female stereotypes portrayed by social networks. These caricatured images reveal the ambiguities of virtual profiles, between the objectification of the body and the desire for individuality. Questioning the impact of social media and the monetisation of the self, the installation presents a reflection to a generation obsessed with their physical and digital appearance. One Last Journey , Master Photography graduate One Last Journey addresses artificial intelligence and the instant photographic process through the telling of a fictional love story. Attempting to imitate the aesthetics of the Polaroid camera, Alexey Chernikov writes short descriptions of a couple s last journey before separation on the Midjourney image-generating software. These images are then reproduced on a traditional Polaroid camera using a new printing device developed by the same company. Interested in the emotional potential of AI, the artist questions the reliability of the photographic medium. From one image to the next, the pair appears different each time, confusing the sense of reality. Using the Polaroid as definitive proof of authenticity, the project invites us to reconsider the photographic snapshot in light of AI. Get the Look! , Bachelor Photography graduate What would happen if we let algorithms dress us? This is the question Romain Mader asked himself when he founded Get the Look! He set himself a challenge: to follow the recommendations of his smartphone s algorithm and order clothes from online stores as suggested, without making any personal choices. Since the algorithm is influenced by his and his partner s browsing activity, the result would be expected to match their style and personality. In his studio, the artist adopts a number of incongruous postures. By examining the sales techniques and marketing tools used by fast-fashion websites to encourage consumption, the series ironically denounces industryinduced addiction. Through the example of fashion, Mader universally reveals the influence of algorithms on our lives.
