Exhibition "ECAL Photography" at ECAL,12.12.2013–15.02.2014,Gallery l elac, Renens From 13 December to 15 February 2014, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents the “ECAL Photography” exhibition in the Gallery l elac at Renens. The exhibition offers a selection of works produced by 58 young talents during their Photography Bachelor curriculum at ECAL. All these images were chosen by exhibition curator Nathalie Herschdorfer, who has developed several internationally acclaimed projects around emerging photography, as well as by Milo Keller, head of the Photography programme at ECAL, and Alexis Georgacopoulos, ECAL director. The scenography of the exhibition is created especially by Swiss designer Adrien Rovero. The “ECAL Photography” book (296 pages, 385 images) supports this event. This book is produced by art publishers Hatje Cantz, with a worldwide reputation for their catalogue of publications on photography. HD Images An art school is an image factory. New generations of artists are constantly emerging, joining the marathon of exhibitions and publications from the very first years of their creative lives. In this context, the art school has become a particularly attractive place for ambitious young artists. This book features a selection of works by photography students from one of the world s top art universities: ECAL, in Lausanne, Switzerland, an institution commited to training artists, graphic designers, industrial designers, typographers, filmmakers, interaction designers, and photographers. Dmitry Bukreev – Varst Varst Having spent the first twenty years of my life in Moscow, I am interested in the relationship between the strong architecture of the 1920 s and the fashion of nowadays. I use the model of Constructivism and update it through the fashion catalogue of an imaginary designer named Varst. Varst is a universe of strict lines and geometric shapes. This catalogue is a combination of 2D graphic shapes – illustrations, collages, typography – which comes alive in volume and takes shape. This project is a work of art direction, styling, and visual experiments. Practicalities (La vie matérielle) Exhibition at Basis e.v., Frankfurt , from September 19 to October 13, 2013. "If it s true that every book must have a raison d être , this isn t a book," Marguerite Duras wrote of La vie matérielle , which she published in 1987. Practicalities (La vie matérielle) considers the utopian reach as well as the material bounds pertaining to art produced in the art school s realm. How may a showcase of works by art students be formulated? Can it be an exhibition and function as such? Could one articulate its raison d être anew? This project results from a one-year exchange program initiated by artist Willem de Rooij in collaboration with curator and art critic Stéphanie Moisdon. Conceived by students and recent graduates of the Fine Arts Master directed by Moisdon at ECAL/ Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, Practicalities is the second part of a twofold exhibition program. It echoes and completes Influence at 1m3, whose display introduced to a Lausanne audience works by artists studying under de Rooij s professorship at Städelschule Frankfurt. Ways of making and displaying art vary from one territory to another. As Practicalities stands at a threshold between two localities, it acknowledges the constraints and liberties one experiences here and there as an artist not yet fully concerned with commercial strategies or institutional demands. Pauline Miserez – Elusiveness “We live among people whom many would describe as exceptional or marginal. Aware of their differences and suffering from isolation, they try to blend in with the crowd. Despite their suspicions, the observation has allowed me to uncover some of them. I then attempted to determine the components of their identity to translate it ostensibly using photography ; through visual associations, I developed a range of signs and clues which, interpreted as a whole, make visible what is theoretically known only by their confidants. The texts, for their part, recount my encounters with these characters. This collection evokes, through the accumulation and repetition of forms, the overrepresentation of the work of art from its inception to its inscription in the collective unconscious. ECAL Book Tour 2013,07.09–18.11.2013,Lausanne, New York, Zurich, Paris Dès septembre 2013, l ECAL entame une tournée pour présenter différentes publications. Par l intermédiaire d une délégation de son Master Art Direction, elle se rendra successivement à Lausanne, New York, Zurich et Paris dans des foires dédiées aux livres d artistes, monographies, catalogues, périodiques et fanzines. Lors de ces événements, une dizaine de publications récentes de l ECAL seront à découvrir, dont des nouvelles parutions telles que: - «Mock-Up x 36», compilation des meilleurs projets de magazines tirés du «cours magazine» Bachelor et Master de l ECAL. - «Dear Herb», fruit d un workshop sur les archives du célèbre graphiste américain Herb Lubalin par les étudiants du Master Art Direction lors d un séjour à la Cooper Union de New York. - «30 Years of Swiss Typographic Discourse in the Typographische Monatsblätter», projet de recherche mené par Louise Paradis (en collaboration avec Roland Früh et François Rappo). Vitrines ECAL/Hermès at Zürich,03.09–15.11.2013,Store Hermès Zürich As a result of a collaboration with Hermès (Switzerland), the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship of ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne conceived vitrine proposals for their Zürich store. Under the supervision of Head of department Nicolas Le Moigne, the aim of the workshop was to create 5 large and 9 small vitrines by developing different compositions around Hermès s annual theme of “A sporting Life”, while staying true to the brand s universe and design codes. Following a presentation of life-size mockups, one of the 10 propositions particularly seduced the jury of 3 brand managers. The “Silhouette” project by student Fabien Gerlier is conceived of different sculptural structures designed to present the objects from the Autumn-Winter collection. Caught in the beam of light of a projector, the objects create shadows which illustrate the “A sporting Life” theme. Thus a climber climbs a mountain created out of the shadow of an item of clothing while a dancer appears graciously due to the superposition of jewellery, a scarf and a belt. Combining simplicity and poetry, this idea was developed in all 5 of the store vitrines, creating different compositions, each one playful and artistic. ECAL at the Locarno International Film Festival 2013,07–17.08.2013,Locarno A l occasion du 66e Festival international du film de Locarno (du 7 au 17 août 2013), l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne sera fortement représentée. Après avoir remporté quatre fois en cinq le prix du Meilleur court métrage suisse, l ECAL comptera sur un film de diplôme et trois films d anciens étudiants pour briller dans cette compétition. Quant à Blaise Harrison, diplômé en 2003, il défendra son nouveau film, «L Harmonie», dans la sélection «Cinéastes du Présent». La Piazza Grande aura le privilège d accueillir deux longs métrages événements avec «Les Grandes Ondes (à l ouest)» de Lionel Baier, responsable du Département Cinéma à l ECAL, et «L expérience Blocher» de Jean-Stéphane Bron, diplômé en 1996 et intervenant régulier à l ECAL. Le lundi 12 août dès 16h au Pavillon Swiss Films (La Sala), l ECAL profitera également pour présenter son nouveau DVD avec une sélection des meilleurs films 2012-2013 du Département Cinéma. Public Prize for an ECAL student at Design Parade 8 Après avoir déjà remporté dans ce cadre des prix en 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011 et 2012 (Adrien Rovero, Michel Charlot, Antoine Boudin, Brynjar Sigurdarson, Julie Richoz), l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne continue sa moisson à l occasion de Design Parade 8 (Festival international de design) présenté à la Villa Noailles (Hyères). Pour l édition 2013, Mugi Yamamoto (né en 1988 à Tokyo), diplômé en Bachelor Design Industriel depuis quelques jours, est lauréat du Prix du public. Outre Mugi Yamamoto, le jury avait sélectionné cinq autres écaliens (Sylvain Aebischer, Sarha Duquesne, Daniele Bortotto, Dimitri Bähler, Béatrice Durandard) parmi les 10 candidats en compétition. Ils ont été sélectionnés par un jury présidé par le designer Bertjan Pot. Les projets présentés par Mugi Yamamoto: Bio Composite A Lausanne, la terre a pour composante une glaise de très bonne qualité. Aussi, j ai choisi d utiliser ce matériau, polyvalent et fascinant, d en conserver les qualités écologiques et recyclables en mélangeant uniquement la terre locale à des éléments biodégradable sans avoir à les cuire. Pour trouver l assemblage optimal, j ai expérimenté plus d une cinquantaine de combinaisons composées de vingt-quatre éléments différents. Toutes ont été pressées dans le même moule, puis séchées à l air. Par la suite, j ai éprouvé leur résistance en exerçant une force de manière progressive sur chacune d entre elles, et en mesurant le poids au moment de l écroulement. J ai été surpris par la résistance du mélange final. L assise du tabouret possède une épaisseur de seulement 2 cm et cela est suffisant pour qu une personne puisse s asseoir, sans qu aucun écroulement ne survienne. La toile de jute qui est intégrée aux deux côtés du mélange possède plusieurs fonctions. Elle procure une sensation tactile plus agréable que la terre, elle permet de préserver la propreté de celui qui s assoit et apporte un supplément de résistance à la terre. Grâce à ce travail d expérimentation, ce projet m a permis de concevoir un nouveau dérivé de ce matériau bon marché, facile à produire, entièrement écologique et très stable. Gravity C est le résultat d un workshop d une semaine à l Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne (ECAL) sur le thème de la gravité. Cette lampe, inspirée des ready-made, est facile à monter et d une étonnante simplicité. Chaque pièce ou élément possède une double fonction: la batterie sert d ancre et d alimentation, le câble maintient le ballon à la batterie et transmet l énergie. Quant au ballon, il contient l hélium et agit comme un diffuseur ou un réflecteur de lumière. Hover Hover est un vase en céramique pour pivoines avec une base solide et un anneau élevée, qui permet de maintenir les fleurs dans la bonne position. L anneau est relié à la base avec un fil métallique, qui par sa couleur verte et son épaisseur se confond avec les tiges des pivoines. L ECAL vous mène en bateaux!,04.07–29.09.2013,La Vallette-du-Var Jeudi 4 juillet à 17h30 au Jardin remarquable de Baudouvin à La Valette-du-Var, vernissage de l exposition de bateaux réalisés par les étudiants de l ECAL lors d un workshop avec le designer français Antoine Boudin. En novembre 2012, Antoine Boudin, également diplômé de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne en 2008, a été invité à diriger le workshop «Vaisseaux» à l ECAL. Les étudiants de 3e année du Bachelor Design Industriel devaient concevoir des objets naviguant grâce à la force du vent. Une première expérience dans ce domaine pour la plupart d entre eux! Après une semaine de recherche, huit maquettes d embarcations ont été testées en situation sur le lac Léman. L ECAL at Lausanne Jardins 2014 Trois projets imaginés par des étudiant·e·s de l ECAL ont été primés et seront réalisés dans le cadre de la manifestation Lausanne Jardins 2014, «Landing» Voici dans l ordre, les projets gagnants: 1er prix – Louis-Marie de Montbenon (Arthur Cotteaux, Clarisse Mordret, Paul Tubiana) Cette création aux consonances royales revisite l art topiaire (taille des arbres dans un but décoratif), en équipant l arbre d une roue afin de le transporter plus facilement. Une nouvelle réflexion sur les fonctionnalités du végétal en ville. Suivez ce lien pour visionner le premier lauréat Louis-Marie de Montbenon. 2e prix – Garden Balance (Marlo Guerry-Karamounas, Arthur Didier, Sofaya Philemon) Cette étonnante serre possède une vocation participative puisqu elle transforme le passant en véritable acteur du jardin. A son extrémité, la balance géante est dotée d une serre de protection que l on peut soulever pour jardiner à sa guise. Un moyen simple et ingénieux pour protéger son potager tout en interagissant avec les autres visiteurs. Seule règle ; être au minimum deux. 3e prix – Grenade (Camille Ringenbach, Guillaume Renaudin, Alejandra Perini) Grenade est sans aucun doute le plus microscopique des jardins. Monté sur un élastique, ce projectile d argile abrite des graines afin de transformer le jardin en douce fronde. Inspiré du mouvement «guerilla gardening», le projet invite le promeneur à faire fleurir le pavé au gré de son imagination. La Grenade d argile viendra compléter la gamme d objets dérivés de Lausanne Jardins 2014. It is an investigation into why people dream of escaping to the other side of the world seeking for exoticism. People everywhere desire what they don t have. So why is the grass greener on the other side? Transvercity looks into this abstract representation of longing for distance phenomenon. Fexy Sans is a bilingual typeface designed for this project. The Latin version is unicase typeface inspired by the Chinese characters. This cross-cultural experiment is set to explore alternative identity of in-between world. Katharina Tauer and Martina Vierthaler – This work is a collaboration between a fashion designer and two graphic designers. The development of a visual identity includes the creation of a corporate typeface and the art direction of a photographical style. A major component of the project is a publication which works on one hand as a medium to feature the latest fashion collection and to introduce the designer, on the other hand it is an exploration and interpretation of sources of inspiration. It tells the stories behind the collection´s topics and creates a specific mood. This work is a collaboration between a fashion designer and two graphic designers. The development of a visual identity includes the creation of a corporate typeface and the art direction of a photographical style. A major component of the project is a publication which works on one hand as a medium to feature the latest fashion collection and to introduce the designer, on the other hand it is an exploration and interpretation of sources of inspiration. It tells the stories behind the collection´s topics and creates a specific mood.

The shapes are deformed, reduced to a simple representation, and pass before our eyes, mobilizing commonplaces and stereotypes. This game plays with a tradition that needs to be discussed. The exploration is light, uninhibited, and the path gets intriguing when it joins document research with knowledge criticism. Travaux de nuit is a subjective overview that shows its operating system, emphasizing the way the journey is made. Grégory Corthay , Personne Explore the variety of media to experience the range of perceptions. Translate and face toward the horizon of emptiness welcoming the native return of an origin. The taste of travel narrative and stroll contributes to a significant cosmogony around notions of landscape, our presence within its conquest and reveals visions of legends, traditions and innovations. Sylvain Croci-Torti , Uncomfortably Numb In my work the canvas is used to reproduce and reinterpret different influences, from TCS (Swiss Automobile Club) to EMI. The long and painstaking preparation of the canvases contrasts with the quick, efficient and radical gestures with which the paint is applied. Just like a punk song played on a fancy Gibson. Lucile Dupraz , Higher Than It Is Wide Higher Than It Is Wide is a lecture performance paced to a stream of pictures, all of which portray the same sitter. Handling these visuals as I speak, I weave together threads of descriptive and technical language while forming narrative patterns. These take the audience through thoughts occurring to an image maker, those formed by a viewer, and transcriptions of camera or computer processes. Wishing to address the act of looking by means of spoken words I chose a hybrid medium for a composite task. I thus saw the photograph s mute, frozen likeness evolve to richer nuances, by dint of its translation into gestures and phrasings uttered live. Richard Hollis,23.04–17.05.2013,Gallery l elac, ECAL Du 24 avril au 16 mai 2013 (vernissage le mardi 23 avril à 18h30), l espace lausannois d art contemporain (l elac – galerie de l ECAL) accueille «Richard Hollis». Une exposition réalisée pour la Gallery Libby Sellers à Londres par l historienne du graphisme Emily King. Une occasion unique de découvrir 267 documents issus des archives personnelles et professionnelles du graphiste britannique Richard Hollis. «Richard Hollis est graphiste, auteur et professeur. Il a réalisé ses premiers travaux depuis son appartement du centre de Londres au milieu des années 1950. Aujourd hui, il travaille toujours depuis chez lui. En effet, Hollis privilégie une collaboration étroite avec ses commanditaires (écrivains, éditeurs, artistes, commissaires d exposition et architectes). Estimant que le travail d un graphiste est de communiquer efficacement le message d un client avec la plus grande économie de moyens, il le décrit comme «diamétralement opposé au travail d un artiste» et ajoute que «si tout se passe bien, le processus s apparente à une consultation chez le médecin qui dispose d un savoir et d une expertise». Né à Londres en 1934, Richard Hollis a fait ses études à Chelsea et à l école d arts de Wimbledon. En 1957, il délaissa ses cours à Wimbledon, préférant exercer comme graphiste indépendant, imprimant souvent ses travaux à son domicile. Parallèlement, il a suivi des cours du soir à la Central School of Arts and Crafts, qu il considérait plus pointus que ceux de Chelsea et de Wimbledon. Malgré son manque de qualifications formelles, il commença à enseigner en 1958, tout d abord à la London School of Printing and Graphic Arts, puis, plus tard, à la Chelsea School of Art et à la Central School. Il a travaillé de 1964 à 1966 au West England College of Art avec le designer «du construit» Norman Potter avec qui il a fondé une nouvelle école de graphisme. Admirateur du graphisme moderniste Suisse et de l art concret, Hollis a voyagé à Zurich à la fin des années 1950 pour rendre visite à des artistes et des graphistes, dont Richard Paul Lohse et Josef Müller-Brockmann. Il y rencontra également des membres de l ancienne avant-garde à Paris, comme par exemple l artiste De Stijl Georges Vantongerloo. En 1960, il rencontra le personnel et les étudiants de la Hochschule für Gestaltung d Ulm. Deux ans plus tard, il retourna en Suisse pour visiter l école de design de Bâle et, presque cinquante plus tard, il écrivit et conçut le livre «Swiss Graphic Design» (Laurence King, 2006). En 1962, Hollis se rendit à Cuba, voyage au cours duquel s est fondée sa sensibilité politique de gauche. A son retour, il publia «I, Eye», un journal de voyage grand-format racontant ses expériences. De 1963 à 1964, Hollis vécut à Paris où il travailla comme directeur artistique pour les Galeries Lafayette. Sa publicité pleine page de Noël, «Mais j ai oublié. Tante Agathe!» a été nommée réclame du mois par Vendre magazine. Hollis a dirigé et conçu le graphisme de plusieurs journaux parmi lesquels New Society, New Middle East, Sogat Journal ainsi que Modern Poetry in Translation, le dernier qu Hollis ait conçu en quarante ans de travail. Il a par ailleurs travaillé pour de nombreux éditeurs dont ponctuellement pour Penguin ainsi que comme directeur artistique du journal de gauche Pluto-Press et brièvement comme directeur de la production de Faber & Faber. En 1972, Hollis fut un des cinq de l équipe qui produisit la série télévisée de John Berger intitulée «Manières de voir». Il utilisa à cette occasion des caractères gras pour représenter la voix du présentateur alternant avec des images non légendées, avec le désir de produire un équivalent imprimé de l expérience télévisuelle. Hollis avait auparavant travaillé avec Berger, en concevant le graphisme de son roman «G.» (1972) et son étude sur les travailleurs émigrés intitulée «Un Septième homme» (1975), produite avec la collaboration du photographe Jean Mohr. En 1969, Hollis commença à travailler pour la Whitechapel Art Gallery alors dirigée par Mark Grazebrook. Il quitta l institution en 1972 mais y retourna en 1978, juste après la nomination de son nouveau directeur Nicholas Serota. Travaillant pour la Whitechapel Art Gallery sept années durant, Hollis put y établir un système de communication graphique cohérent. Depuis ce moment, il collabora avec de nombreuses institutions privées et publiques, et au cours de ces années, forgea des relations durables avec nombre d artistes. Hollis a ainsi dessiné de nombreuses publications pour Bridget Riley et a récemment collaboré à de multiples projets pour l artiste et cinéaste Steve McQueen. Depuis les années 1960, Hollis a également publié de nombreux articles dans des magazines et des revues, la plupart à propos du design. Il est aussi à la fois l auteur et le concepteur de «Graphic Design: A Concise History» (Le Graphisme de 1890 à nos jours), édité par Thames & Hudson en 1994. En 2010, il a commencé à éditer des ouvrages sous son propre nom, dont celui de son compagnon Romek Marber «No Return: Journeys in the Holocaust». Une compilation des écrits de Hollis a été publiée par Occasional Papers en avril 2012, sous le titre «About Graphic Design». Passant en revue l ensemble de cinquante années d activité, Hollis y affirme qu il n a pas de style en particulier et que chaque proposition porte son style en soi. Richard Hollis, né à Londres en 1934, s est imposé comme une figure majeure du graphisme anglo-saxon. Ses collaborations avec des artistes (Steve McQueen, Bridget Riley), des critiques d art (John Berger) et des institutions (la Whitechapel Art Gallery) furent l occasion de publications remarquables. Parmi ses nombreuses réalisations, on peut noter le livre « Swiss Graphic Design : The Origins and Growth of an International Style, 1920 – 1965 ».
Junk Museum,19.04–08.05.2013,Hall Kudelski, ECAL Junk Museum From April 22nd to May 8th (opening on friday April 19th at 6pm), ECALl/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne presents at ECAL (Hall Kudelski) the exhibit “Junk Museum” put together by students from the Bachelor of Photography, following a workshop with Thomas Mailaender. Transform five tons of junk into images! This was the challenge set forward by french photographer Thomas Mailaender during a two week workshop undertaken by 28 students from the second year Bachelor of Photography headed by Milo Keller. By means of cut, superimposed, hung and projected images, the challenge not only allowed the students to get familiar with the art of scenography and installation but also to introduce a perhaps unexplored domain like sculpture. “This is not an ordinary exhibit but a collective effort embodied by a interactive and photographic 400 square meter sculpture-terrain built on multiple layers in a huge box. This genuine invitation for the visitor to experiment is also a wonderful container to showcase the students work”, explains Thomas Mailaender. This incredible device is paired with a newspaper that the students produced in a few hours to present their work. The Iceland Whale Bone Project Each year some fifteen whales get stranded on the coasts of Iceland. A whole local tradition is being kept alive around the bones of these gentle giants, often used in their raw state but rarely worked on by designers. In January 2013, 17 ECAL Product Design Master students went to the Iceland Academy of the Arts in Reykjavik to attend a workshop led by Icelandic designer Brynjar Sigurðarson. According to him “the idea was to collect various types of bones on the beach, but also shark skin or teeth, or even bits of plastic waste. From this starting point, the ECAL students who had come from all corners of the earth were supposed to draw on the atmosphere of this particular environment to create objects”. From the skull of a Minke whale repainted like a car body to cutters using shark s teeth, via ship models whose centreboard is made from whale vertebrae, masks put together using the remains of marine animals and contemporary materials, and including a geometric decorative object made of bone and placed on a pedestal, this surprisingly poetic selection is the fruit of a reflection on contrasts between the old and the new and the meeting of the primitive and the progressive. ECAL MIlano 2013: "Savoir-Faire",08–14.04.2013,Spazio Orso 16, Milan The “Savoir-Faire” exhibition showcases a selection by ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos, featuring projects in Product and Industrial Design, Art Direction, Photography, Graphic Design and Media & Interaction Design by ECAL Bachelor and Master students. Following a successful experience at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan last year, ECAL offers, for the second time, an exhibition which introduces photography, graphic design, art direction and interaction design amidst “traditional” product & industrial design works. “At ECAL there is no single way to create, although we do take to heart such values as precision, professionalism, innovation – and even humour. Our outmost objective is to develop different skills specific to each programme, but also to integrate this diverse know-how in the cross-disciplinary fashion which has established our school s reputation. With this exhibition we wanted to show that our students “know how” to contribute with passion to each field developed at ECAL”, says ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos.
Dear Peggy,06.04–04.05.2013,Treize, Paris « Dear Peggy », une exposition d oeuvres d étudiants du Bachelor et du Master Arts Visuels de l ECAL. Sélection de Gallien Déjean (critique, commissaire et professeur invité), Stéphane Kropf (artiste et responsable du Bachelor AV) et Stéphanie Moisdon (critique, commissaire et responsable du Master AV). L utilisation de logiciels de modélisation 3D s est accrue dans le domaine de la conception des expositions. Ces outils offrent aux designers et aux commissaires une plus grande maniabilité pour reconstituer l espace virtuel de la galerie et y expérimenter les différentes options scénographiques envisagées. Pourtant, malgré l éventail des possibilités de ces logiciel (la déconstruction de l espace tridimensionnel en superposition de plans et de facettes), leur usage dans le champ curatorial reste souvent désespérément conventionnel : le tableau est accroché au mur, le mur est perpendiculaire au sol, la sculpture est posée sur le sol devant le mur. En présentant chez Treize (Paris) les travaux de 14 artistes sélectionnés parmi les étudiants du Bachelor et du Master Arts Visuels de l ECAL, le projet « Dear Peggy » explore certaines ressources de la modélisation virtuelle pour les appliquer, avec des matériaux et des techniques simples, dans l espace réel. Bien avant l invention des logiciels 3D, l architecte Frederick John Kiesler avait imaginé pour la section surréaliste d Art of This Century (la galerie new-yorkaise de Peggy Guggenheim, ouverte en 1942) des murs convexes à partir desquels les œuvres, accrochées sur des tiges, étaient projetées dans l espace. En s inspirant de ce système, «Dear Peggy» s affranchit de la linéarité et de la planéité murale du white cube pour métamorphoser l espace d exposition, démultiplier les plans de l accrochage et donner une nouvelle matérialité aux œuvres présentées. Exposition sans thème, «Dear Peggy» incarne la diversité des pratiques développées au sein de l ECAL. Cette mise entre parenthèse d œuvres disparates entre deux murs incurvés fonctionne comme un emballage, une métaphore simultanée de l exposition collective temporaire et de l école d art. «Dear Peggy» est un tube ouvert de part et d autre, un passage transitoire, comme peut l être une école dans la carrière d un artiste. Low-Tech Factory,21.03–21.04.2013,Hôtel Droog, Amsterdam ECAL presents "Low-Tech Factoy" at the Droog Hotel in Amsterdam. On this occasion, Alexis Georgacopoulos, and Chris Kabel, professor at ECAL, will participate in a debate (April 21 at 7pm) to answer this question: "Why are so many young designers making machines these days?" Low-Tech Factory is a project by ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, Switzerland. In a workshop led by Chris Kabel and Thomas Kral, students from Bachelor in Industrial Design and Master in Product Design created a series of simple but sophisticated machines that not only create an experience, but actually produce finished goods—hats, mirrors, bags, toys, lamps and popcorn. With this project, the theme of auto-production is raised. Recently we have seen countless designers make their own machines. And while it often seems the machine becomes more important than the result, in this case, the design of the machine and its resulting product are in balance. The exhibition presents six machines with videos. At the opening on March 21st, the designers will demonstrate the machines themselves. The question—why are designers making so many machines—still remains. With this question, we will enter into a debate on March 21st with Alexis Georgacopoulos, director of ECAL, Chris Kabel, Joanna van der Zanden and Joris Laarman. The evening will be moderated by Tracy Metz. ----- Students projects "Oncle Sam" by ECAL/Laurent Beirnaert, Pierre Bouvier, Paul Tubiana The "Oncle Sam" machine processes grains one by one, focusing on the transformation of corn into popcorn. An explosion that usually occurs en masse is here isolated so that the spectacle can be enjoyed. Satisfaction is at once visual and gastronomic. "Rocking-Knit" by ECAL/Damien Ludi, Colin Peillex "Rocking-Knit" is a new interpretation of the rocking chair. It offers its user productive moments of relaxation. The to-and-fro movement of this armchair knits hats for the winter and requires no exertion whatsoever. "Stamp" by ECAL/Anaïs Benoit Dignac, Arthur Didier, Edrris Gaaloul "Stamp" is a production line that converts simple plastic trellis into portable lamps. The steps in the manufacturing process are carried out along a rail: the plastic is heated, shaped, and finally crimped over an inexpensive bulb. The result of this ingenious production is a portable lamp complete with a graphic lightweight shade. "Swing" by ECAL/Léonard Golay, Camille Rein "Swing" is a giant punch that transforms pieces of stretch tarpaulin into extendable openwork sacks. The items are produced by the weight of the user who, gyrating, executes a production movement resembling a dance step. "Animal Growth" by ECAL/Eleonora Castellarin, Moises Hernandez Through the use of simple hand tools, this fun worktop breaks down the production process of animal toys manufactured from expanded foam. Cutting, gluing, filling and observing the animals takes shape before your very eyes. "Marbelous" by ECAL/Anurag Etchepareborda, Flora Fixy Using a surface transfer method known as “marbling”, the Marbelous transforms simple objects by coating them with a thin layer of marbled motifs. With a few drops of paint, surprising colour effects are transferred to metallic mirrors, giving your reflection an unexpected impression.

Né en 1957 à Amsterdam, il a emménagé à New York en 1979, où il s est investi au sein de la scène artistique locale au contact d artistes tels que Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring ou Robert Mapplethorpe. Depuis, Ari Marcopoulos est reconnu comme un photographe et un documentariste majeur de la culture contemporaine.

François Rappo Né en 1955, François Rappo étudie le design graphique à l ECBA (Ecole cantonale des beaux-arts, Lausanne, classe d art appliqué, 1980) où il se spécialise dans la typographie. Typographische Monätsblatter With more than 70 years in existence, the journal witnessed significant moments in the history of typography and graphic design. The covers are a prominent aspect of the research, and their examination provides witness to the attitudes and aesthetic concerns of the period in which they were published. The Typographische Monatsblätter not only made “Swiss Design” known to an international audience, it also spread the burgeoning ideas of the “New Wave” style. Multimodal Publishing The sphere of mass media is deeply transformed by the irruption of network technologies. Thus, the editorial field of magazines faces an increasing phenomenon of fragmentation and differentiation. New editorial projects and new “communities of readers” appear, characterized by an unprecedented and innovative structure of diffusion and reception. These media are a paradox : they are at the same time products of high editorial complexity while being based on a restricted editorial structure. Atrocity Exhibition John Graham Ballard s literary technique influenced by Surrealism, his explicit or indirect references to artworks or artpractices and the relationships the author had with the british Pop artists attest that The Atrocity Exhibition has an affinity with the discipline of contemporary art. The aim of this research project was to design the parameters of an exhibition dedicated to The Atrocity Exhibition. The student-researchers inquired into the status of exhibitions - such as documentary, historical or thematical – and into more recent experimental displays. They decided to conceive an exhibition that articulated documentary restitution and creation. The few selected documents were used to blur the notions of context and reference in order to echo with the ambiguous media criticism in Ballard s work. The display structure created for the exhibition points towards devices as eclectic as contemporary commercial fairs, world s fairs or the Independent Group s Pavilions, in an elliptic and entropic gesture involving oblivion, decay, mutation and sedimentation. A book gathers all the lectures by invited experts, the interventions by the professors and the results of the sudents research in the conception of this exhibition. Grand Prix pour l ECAL à Cologne Dans le cadre du salon international du meuble imm cologne (14 au 20 janvier 2013), Lucien Gumy (né à Fribourg en 1988) a été récompensé par le 1er prix (3 000 euros) du prestigieux D3 Contest pour son travail de diplôme Bachelor en Design Industriel réalisé en 2012 à l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne. Pour ce concours, les organisateurs avaient reçu plus de 670 inscriptions et retenu dans la compétition finale 21 produits créés par 27 designers "L étagère en bois" par ECAL/Lucien Gumy "L étagère en bois est l aboutissement d une recherche sur la manière d assembler l horizontal et le vertical. Elle est réalisée dans des sections standards uniquement en bois massif avec une perte de matière minimale. Mon but était de réaliser une étagère démontable en supprimant les ferrements et les perçages. En évoluant, le projet s est simplifié et mon intervention sur les montants et les rayons est devenue de plus en plus légère." Ce projet a également reçu le "Prix BG du développement durable" en juin 2012. Basics of Creativity André Vladimir Heiz The fruit of the research project “Didactica” 1. In every sense of creativity Hailed as the “bible for designers” on the German radio, the “Basics of Creativity” broach all branches of Arts and Crafts. The methods concerning the artistic know-how dwell on the decisive transition to formation, information and transformation. Mind the gap! Practise builds the bridge between imagination and realization, form and function and leads the way to appropriate solutions. It begins by presenting the decisive perspectives from which processes, projects and products can be confined and analysed. Each volume covers a different point of view : Volume 1: Processes and programs Volume 2: Structures and systems Volume 3: Sign and Context Volume 4: Identities and Differences There has never been a standard reference like this one, dealing with all areas of design, close to the trigger moment when making a decision makes the difference and sense bythe way – for designers of all types, architects and artists as well. 2. The harvest of research “Basics of Creativity” represent a prototype of research through, about and essentially for Design. Experimental adventures, empirical grounded approaches, scientific investigations and good many case studies permitted to build up the topics as a whole. A united research team explored different approaches to bring out an optimal presentation. In response to the research goal for enlightening pictures and tools, designers opened the doors of their archives and studios and contributed insightful examples. Research gave all the time we need to find out innovative entries for perception and production. “Basics of creativity” are a hotbed of ideas in order to break patterns. 3. Love is the thing What would love be without an outstanding declaration? What would things and signs be without having a remarkable impact? Designers, craftsmen and artists have to show and tell what they mean by developing their traces really and practically. Indeed they have to understand increasingly well how they manage projects and products, within their daily round work as a go-between, carrying the creative process through a convincing solution. Theories of perception and production scout out the possibilities and conditions due to artistic specificities and aims. Whatever it is a matter of developing a font, an urban concept, a logo, public art, product design, communication or research – precise perception defines the way the problem initially is framed. 4. What comes it down to? Open it, look at it, read and pace up and down the “Wonderland” of the “Basics”. You ll light upon a salutary example, fall on significant observations and follow the logical demonstration of diagrams. Readers and observers are taken by the hand and guided along gently with a good sense of humour. Each spread is a discovery, couched in the rhythm of knowledge acquisition. Drop in and space out: examples help with orientation. Like glasses or scissors, a pen or necessary software-tools “Basics of Creativity” come in handy. All you have to do is to make a break, close your windows and open one of the volumes of the “Basics”. Collection d art de la Banque Cantonale Vaudoise A catalogue published on the occasion of the exhibition “Contemporary… Is It? The BCV Art Collection”. It offers a look at the BCV art collection, a major player in the art scene in the canton of Vaud. Through the eye of photographers Michal Schorro Florence and Prune Simon Vermot, the reader is invited to discover the works in unusual contexts, ranging from workshops, meetings with artists, spaces of the banks, places of the artworks creation, to the status of art objects and collectibles. The visual essay provides a unique glimpse into the artistic creation in the canton of Vaud and the active support of the BCV. It is thus, by its content and by the point of view of photographers, a reference light on the artist s life here and now. In addition to the two photographers, the graphic design and realization of the catalogue was coordinated by Katharina Tauer and Simon Ladoux, students of the Master Art Direction, supervised and guided by François Rappo, Anouk Dulguerov, Robert Huber and Alexis Georgacopoulos. Published by BCV and co-published with the Hermitage Foundation, the exhibition catalogue is prefaced by Sylvie Wuhrmann, Director of Fondation de l Hermitage, and Olivier Steimer, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the BCV and President of the Commission of the art collection BCV. It brings together contributions from Jean-Paul Felley and Olivier Kaeser, co-directors of the Centre Culturel Suisse in Paris, and Catherine Girard-Othenin, curator of the art collection BCV and curator of the exhibition. Low-Tech Factory For its 14th edition, Langenthal Designers Saturday offers carte blanche to the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. It provides the setting for the ECAL to present its exhibition entitled “Low-Tech Factory”, a selection of machines designed by Bachelor s and Master s students of Industrial Design and Product at a workshop led by designers Chris Kabel and Tomás Král. At Langenthal, factories are omnipresent.For this carte blanche, it seemed to us natural to ask students to look at showcasing the manufacturing process of an object, from the machine to the finished product. They therefore experimented with simple and ingenious shaping methods such as moulding, thermoforming and knitting to obtain finished products. “Low-Tech Factory” tackles the subject of automatic production beloved by designers, bringing together six entertaining machines which throughout the exhibition produce mirrors, hats, sacks, toys, lamps, and even popcorn! Offices Unlimited “ Offices Unlimited ” is a research on office furniture in collaboration with furniture manufacturer Vitra (CH). ECAL and zai at blickfang Zurich,23–25.11.2012,Blickfang, Zurich On the occasion of blickfang Zurich (23-25 November 2012), the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Luxury Industry and Design at the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne present objects realized in collaboration with zai, a Swiss manufacturer of skis based in Disentis (GR). These projects have been developed through a workshop with the British designer Alexander Taylor. The four projects, presented as prototypes, have been developed from a series of tough specifications set by the Swiss company. The challenge was to create highly functional objects such as snow shoes or tools while using, if possible, leftovers from the zai ski production.The results embody the no-compromise approach of the company and some are bound to become products in the near future. Essenz snowshoes Romain Deleury & Emelie Lundquist Made from punched and folded aluminum sheets, the Essenz snowshoes are extremely light. In-depth research was performed, many mock-ups were built, and during the process “test and trial” proved crucial. We studied different methods to treat the metal to make it as light and resistant as possible. The choice of material for the Essenz snowshoes was aluminium, a material that was often associated with Swiss expertise, to the point that it was nicknamed “Swiss gold” in the 50 s. The body consists of sheets that have been folded, pierced and punched to give lightness in addition to enhanced rigidity. The two side parts are made of steel to hold the binding and are riveted together with the front part of the shoe. The aluminium surfaces are anodised black, hardening the aluminium and protecting against corrosion. Core axe Kacper Hamilton The Core axe consists of a helve and two interchangeable heads. The straight shaft helve re- sembles a tomahawk, made from a sandwich of zaiìra® and ash wood. The layering construction is inspired by zai s process and philosophy of making skis using raw and contrasting materials. The helve has been refined to be slim and lightweight; thereby generating greater striking momentum and more efficiency when cutting or splitting wood. The heads are made from forged high carbon steel. They can be changed using the integrated quick release system; this allows for secure head attachment, easier sharpening and safer transportation. Each head has a different function, one is for felling trees and the other for splitting logs of wood. Higo knife & tool Kacper Hamilton The Higo collection is influenced by the traditional Japanese ‘Higonokami knife. The Higo tool contains two essential screwdriver heads for adjusting ski bindings, whilst the Higo knife contains a short robust blade. The slim profile of these accessories gives extra safety when carried close to the body whilst skiing. The Higo collection are one handed operational devices. They can be easily opened, locked and closed; providing utmost efficiency in mountain conditions. Both have an automatic locking mechanism, ensuring that they are always safely stored and handled. The unibody of each object is machined out of a single piece of aluminium, therefore making it strong and durable. Rope tool Léo Rodriguez During the visit of the zai factory we discovered their universe which I really liked. The rough aspect of their skis and search for extreme efficiency inspired me for my project. One thing that caught my attention is the fact that they were always carrying the screwdriver in their ski shoes to avoid injuries while skiing. I then decided to make a set of retractable tools using the same components as you can find in their skis. EPFL+ECAL Lab: Lazy Bites,22.11–07.12.2012,EPFL+ECAL Lab, Renens Soixante ans après sa création sous le nom de «Lazy Bones», la télécommande s apprête transformer notre relation aux contenus numériques. L EPFL+ECAL Lab, en collaboration avec le Groupe Kudelski, présente aujourd hui le projet «Lazy Bytes», qui revisite en profondeur ce lien avec les contenus désormais disponibles par la télévision. Lazy Bytes rassemble des créations de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, l ENSCI‐Les Ateliers à Paris, le Royal College of Art de Londres et Parsons, the New School for Design à New York. Pourquoi sommes‐nous attachés à un vase, à une tasse ou à une lampe, mais beaucoup plus rarement à une télécommande de télévision? Tous ces objets ont pourtant une fonction pratique au coeur de notre salon. L EPFL+ECAL Lab a invité quatre des plus prestigieuses écoles de design du monde à collaborer autour de cette question, emblématique dans la mesure où la télévision devient une fenêtre d accès privilégiée aux contenus numériques. Jusqu ici, les évolutions des télécommandes se sont orientées avant tout sur la performance, avec des fonctions toujours plus nombreuses. Or, comme des études récentes en sciences humaines l ont montré, l ergonomie physique et la simplification de ces interfaces ne suffisent pas pour élaborer des solutions stimulantes et convaincantes. Il est nécessaire de prendre en compte ce que représentent ces objets, les valeurs qu ils véhiculent, les références qu ils invoquent, les sensations qu ils génèrent. Avec 63 projets dont 29 sélectionnés pour l exposition, Lazy Bytes ouvre ce champ de réflexion avec des idées étonnantes, comme Rolling Control qui s inspire d un ancien jeu ou Zap, le livre à encre conductrice qui conjugue inscription manuscrite et commande numérique. Et présente aussi des projets concrets, capables de modifier très prochainement notre quotidien, à l instar de la petite Free Hand qui peut adhérer à une tasse ou une canette pour la transformer en télécommande. Plusieurs de ces projets font désormais l objet de tests dans une version fonctionnelle. Ces objets n ont pas pour but de remplacer les télécommandes multifonctions de dernière génération. Ils visent à proposer une alternative, des expériences inédites, créer de nouvelles relations entre l utilisateur et les appareils dont il s entoure. Lazy Bytes associe une démarche académique, grâce au soutien de la Fondation Leenaards et de la Loterie Romande, avec des perspectives d innovation concrètes grâce à l implication du Groupe Kudelski et de son expertise dans le domaine de la télévision numérique. Il s inscrit dans un programme d exploration plus large sur notre rapport au numérique, dont l importance dans notre vie personnelle et sociale ne cesse de croître. Après Lausanne, l exposition Lazy Bytes débutera en 2013 sa tournée internationale qui passera notamment par Paris, Londres et New York.
