Collaboration with Vacheron Constantin – 2016 Project
Collaboration with Vacheron Constantin – 2016

Collaboration with Vacheron Constantin – 2016 The Art of Celestial Mechanics For the third year of the partnership between Vacheron Constantin and ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne (ECAL/University of Art and Design), 16 Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship students worked on the theme of astronomy and telling the time, in particular as related to Celestial Mechanics. The students were tasked with drawing inspiration from three ancestral instruments whose common denominator is the relationship between the Sun and the Earth (the armillary sphere, the astrolabe and the astronomical ring) and revisiting them in a conceptual, contemporary manner. To provide them with a better understanding of the Maison Vacheron Constantin and the world of Celestial Mechanics, students were invited to the Manufacture s headquarters for a week-long introduction, and subsequently to the Geneva History of Science Museum for a “customised” visit. Drawing on these inspirations and their extensive research, the students studied various means of representing time: using the sun to tell the time, illustrating the position of the stars in the sky or identifying the time the sun sets and rises by using an exact date and place. Throughout the development phase, the students worked in multicultural teams. They were accompanied and guided by teams from ECAL, Vacheron Constantin and famous Italian designers from the Studio Formafantasma (Simone Farresin and Andrea Trimarchi). Six different objects were born of this adventure, and have in common the technical challenge, creativity and a quest for excellence.THE IMPRINT OF TIME Sunbeams hit the magnifying glass and leave marks on thermal paper. Fascinated by the light spot from the sun indicating the time on the astronomical ring, we wanted to create an object that would exalt this natural light and the energy it exudes. The phenomenon of the concentration of light with a magnifying glass was an instant source of inspiration. The light spot becomes so hot it burns the material against which it collides, leaving the mark behind. The paper rings thus become evidence of the passing days and retain the marks of sunny days, while leaving the white of cloudy days unmarked. Maud Laurent (France), Jiwon Choi (South Korea), Naoto Suzuki (Japan) GE462615 The engraved plaque illustrates the movement of the stars in real time, while the sound is the result of waves emitted by the same stars. This visual and sound device inspired by the armillary sphere is a direct link with the sky and infinity. It is an invitation to a new way of telling the time which is based on the positioning of the zodiac constellations, in sidereal time which differs from the earthly temporal system. The engraved plaque indicates the position of the stars in the sky in real time for a given place (Geneva) and does a complete rotation every 23 hours and 56 minutes, which corresponds to the time that it takes the earth to rotate on its own axis (a sidereal day). With the help of French astrophysicist Sylvie Vauclair and composer Claude-Samuel Lévine, the device is accompanied by sound obtained from waves emitted by the visible stars. Once assembled and transformed, these waves create a symphony that comes straight from space. Jenna Kaes (France), Renaud Meunier (Belgium), Weiji Wang (China) HORIZON An artificial light representing the sun can be moved around a graduated ring to indicate sunrise and sunset times on a given date in a given place. Based on the armillary sphere, the project aims to reinterpret this antique instrument and to indicate the sunrise and sunset times throughout the year. In the Middle Ages, people thought that the earth was flat and in the centre of the universe, and that the sun rotated around the earth. We started with this belief to turn the horizon into a flat disc to which we added a sundial. The latter enables one to see the light moving slowly throughout the day in order to make the object simple and easy to understand. Clément Beaugé (France), Jungyou Choi (South Korea) DAWN AND DUSK A mechanical system that indicates the time the sun sets and rises on a given date in a given place, while a sparkling dot representing the sun gives the hour in real time. Deliberately positioned somewhere between a watch dial and an astrolabe, our concept consists of two mechanisms: the first, driven by a motor, tells the time in real time through a polished brass dot depicting the path of the sun. The second is a manual mechanism that provides a visual illustration of the night using a set of metal cut-outs that obscure the dial. These two pieces overlap or move apart according to the time of year. In winter, as the nights are longer, the dial is largely covered, while during summer, the dial is only slightly obscured. Thanks to this simple mechanism, sunrise and sunset times can be indicated in a very visual, educational manner. Martin Bolo (France), Hyewon Lim (South Korea), Bongon Koo (South Korea) DANCE OF THE STARS The glass disc on which a map of the stars is engraved makes it possible to determine the exact position of the constellations on a given date. Using the information provided by the astrolabe, we focused on the indication of the stars in the sky. We wanted to deconstruct this traditional metal object so as to endow it with a certain lightness reminiscent of the celestial dome. A silk panel representing the sky is hung over a rack. The latter is held to the ground by a rock, a metaphorical representation of the earth and gravity. By sliding the circle of the stars on which the months are written, one can align the date chosen with the time when one wishes to observe the stars. By superposing the layers, the stars engraved on the glass circle appear on the partly dyed blue silk. Clarisse Mordret (France), Einat Kirschner (Israel) EQUILIBRIUM An engraved stone representing a city acts as a counterweight to create the exact latitudinal position on the mechanism, thereby thus making it possible to see the exact time with the help of sunbeams. We based this on the archetypal pendulum clock that works using stones as counterweights to balance the mechanism. Using this reference, we wanted to reinterpret the astronomical ring in a more poetic version, thus telling the time with the help of a natural element – stone. This weight, attached to the end of the device creates an exact angle (latitude) on the mechanism. After adjusting the day and the month on a graduated tube, one can tell the time by the sunrays. Pauline Masson (France), Hyunjee Jung (South Korea), Takahiro Yamamoto (Japan)

«ECAL Graphic Design» in Hong Kong Event
«ECAL Graphic Design» in Hong Kong

«ECAL Graphic Design» in Hong Kong,30.11.2016–25.03.2017,Experience Centre, Hong Kong In collaboration with the Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) and the Institute of Vocational Education (Lee Wai Lee), ECAL presents an exhibition of projects created by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction. Images HD ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Edited by the Gavillet & Rust studio, the book revolves around a long succession of tracking shots in which projects are not classified in categories, but organised by colour. The exhibition design orchestrated by Adrien Rovero is based on the same concept, allowing a total flexibility of the exhibition. «ECAL Graphic Design» exhibition Opening on Tuesday 29 November 2016, from 6 pm to 7 pm at HKDI and IVE (LWL). "Walk with Pierre Hardy" exhibition,11–13.11.2016,Paris Photo On the occasion of Paris Photo, Pierre Hardy & the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne present the exhibition "Walk with Pierre Hardy". Fifteen iconic models by the designer were visually reinterpreted by the students of Bachelor Photography under the direction of Philippe Jarrigeon. Additionally, a luxurious special publication marks the occasion. To be discovered from 11 to 13 November 2016 (10 am to 7 pm) at the Pierre Hardy boutique (9-11 Place du Palais-Bourbon). HD pictures: www.ecal.ch/en/1649 “I really enjoyed interacting with the students. At ECAL, my role was very different from that of a teacher coaching the students on their work – as I myself was the subject I knew the stuff inside out! Just show me half a centimetre of a heel and I instantly recognise the model which I created”, says Pierre Hardy. The ECAL Bachelor Photography students thus worked on various collections produced by the Parisian designer in the past fifteen years in order to give them a new visual interpretation. Photographer Philippe Jarrigeon comments on the method he chose to conduct this workshop at ECAL: “Together with Pierre Hardy s team we selected fifteen pairs of shoes in the archives – a purely practical decision which allowed us to keep the models as long as we wanted at ECAL. In addition, this allowed students to free themselves from seasonal trends. At the beginning of the workshop in October 2015, each student got a model on which to work by drawing lots”. This project allowed the students to question the relationship between photography and footwear, and by extension to confront the interconnection between photography and fashion. Milo Keller, Head of Photography at ECAL, observes that “Students, working without any business constraints in that case, are less formatted than a professional and therefore often offer unexpected approaches”. The results are indeed surprising and offbeat, sometimes even provocative or poetic, but always treat the original creations with respect.

Infolio Editions. «ECAL Graphic Design» in China Event
«ECAL Graphic Design» in China

«ECAL Graphic Design» in China,23.09–13.11.2016,Beijing & Shanghai Invited by Pro Helvetia Shanghai, ECAL presents an exhibition of projects created by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction on the occasion of the Beijing Design Week in Beijing, West Bund Art and Design Fair in Shanghai, and then travel to Hong Kong Design Institute (more information soon). HD Images ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. «ECAL Graphic Design» exhibitions Beijing Design Week 2016 23 September to 7 October 2016 Baitasi, No.32, Gongmenkou Sitiao, Xicheng District, Beijing West Bund Art and Design Fair VIP Preview: 8 November 2016 Public: 9 to 13 November 2016 West Bund Art Center, 2555 Longteng Avenue, Xuhui District, Shanghai ------- Book "ECAL Graphic Design" Distributed by JRP|Ringier Collection Anthologies & Art Theory www.jrp-ringier.com Edited by: Angelo Benedetto, Lionel, Bovier, Vincent Devaud (Graphic design), Gilles Gavillet (Graphic design), Alexis Georgacopoulos Authors: Angelo Benedetto, Alexis Georgacopoulos, François Rappo Photography: Philippe Fragnière Technical specifications: Hardcover, 225 x 295 mm, 160 pages, 64 color images, English/French, March 2016 ISBN: 978-3-03764-455-3 Price: CHF 48 / EUR 40 / £ 30 / US 49.95

ECAL at Festival Images Vevey Project
ECAL at Festival Images Vevey

ECAL at Festival Images Vevey From 10 September to 2 October 2016, Festival Images Vevey will once again transform the little town of Vevey into the Swiss capital of photography. Visitors will get to discover  75 projects  based on the theme of ‘immersion. Besides the numerous graduates, ECAL offers various installations: ----- ECAL/Florian Amoser –  Quai Maria Belgia Quantified Landscape introduces an ongoing research project on the photographic transposition of space on a flat surface. Deep in the heart of underground galleries, Florian Amoser maps out the relief by placing a motor-mounted laser on the ground. The light beam slowly sweeps the walls of the cave, thereby drawing a continuous line according to the principle of contour lines. These long exposures create black and white landscapes that refer as much to analogue practice as to the digital finish of 3D modelling. These pictures are exhibited on display panels facing Lake Geneva. Original scenography by Festival Images Vevey ----- ECAL/Marvin Leuvrey – Quai Maria Belgia Revelations offers a fantasy-like narrative by immersing into Lake Geneva images of fragmented bathers. Leuvrey combines photography with visual research by applying soil, sand and trash collected from the lakeside onto the negatives and trying out various experiments with acetone, paint and oil. He also integrates water into his work by using the lake as a developing bath. By inviting visitors to tread on the images exhibited on platforms along the waterfront, the installation which starts off on Quai Maria Belgia prolongs the experimental process that Leuvrey uses on his photographs. Original scenography by Festival Images Vevey and Bachelor Industrial Design students (Margaux De Giovannini, Maki Nakaya-Sommet, Mélanie Zufferey). ----- ECAL PhotoJukeBox – La Ferblanterie Photography and music have much closer ties than we might think. Many musicians have paid tribute in one form or another to this mode of artistic expression, including Paul Simon (Kodachrome), Neil Young (Distant Camera), Lady Gaga (Paparazzi), Kraftwerk (Das Model), Barbara (Si la photo est bonne), Eddy Mitchell (La photo des jours heureux), Duran Duran (Girls on Film), The Cure (Pictures of You), Depeche Mode (Photographic) and Ringo Starr (Photograph). Festival Images has invited some thirty first-year Bachelor Photography students from ECAL to produce in one day a video clip for a song. The result is presented in the form of a jukebox that enables festivalgoers to select and listen to a tune by their favourite artist while enjoying a tailor-made video clip. A production by Festival Images Vevey and ECAL . Curating: Stefano Stoll, Milo Keller ----- ECAL Scenography Bachelor of Industrial Design students worked on orginal scenography to present the projects of the various artists. ----- Festival Images Vevey Information Dates: 10 September – 2 October 2016 Free entrance Opening: Saturday 10 September Opening hours for indoor exhibitions: Every day, 11:00-19:00 Festival Images is an outdoor photography festival, which encourages you to walk around the city to discover installations on walls, in streets and in parks. Drei Nächte Project
Drei Nächte

Drei Nächte In this painting, we can count no less than eight boner sex members,  one of the character, entirely naked like the others, is dealing simultaneously with two men and one animal. Indeed, this character, down on his knee is not only sodomizing the animal but he is also grabbing the animal sex member in erection. Furthermore, the lower back character, or even its bump, is being caressed by another man, which in turn has his member in erection held by another one towards the first one s mouth. As for the sodomized animal, its tongue is directed towards the bump of another man, who also have his sex in erection. Even the animals tongues shapes and representations evoke more the sex member in erection than actual tongues. Hermann Eidenbenz Teaching Graphic Design Project
Hermann Eidenbenz Teaching Graphic Design

Hermann Eidenbenz Teaching Graphic Design Hermann Eidenbenz (1902–1992) was one of the first professionals in Switzerland to describe himself as a graphic designer. From the 1910s to the 1950s, he was involved in graphic design education in Zurich, Magdeburg, Basel and Brunswick, first as a student and later as a teacher. Starting from a broad research on historical type design education, the project culminated in the discovery of two consistent convolutes of didactic materials. A collection of glass plates documenting a lettering course in Magdeburg, Germany (1926–1932) and a set of student works reflecting a course in basic design exercises in Basel (1940–1943), both held by Eidenbenz as a teacher. Together with documents from private and public archives in Basel, Berlin, Brunswick, Magdeburg and Zürich, the outcome of the project sheds light on a significant chapter in Swiss graphic design, shortly before it became internationally known.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader) Research team (researcher) (supervisor) (supervisor)Periodoctober 2014 – november 2016PartnersECAL/University of Art and Design LausanneDisseminationPublications Sarah Klein, Die Schriftklasse von Hermann Eidenbenz, in Maramm. IKEA: Essentials for Modern Living by ECAL Event
IKEA: Essentials for Modern Living by ECAL

IKEA: Essentials for Modern Living by ECAL,08–09.06.2016,Democratic Design Days, Älmhult On the occasion of the Democratic Design Days organised (8th and 9th June) at the IKEA headquarters in Älmhult (Sweden), Bachelor Industrial Design students present " IKEA Essentials for Modern Living by ECAL", a series of projects created in collaboration with the famous Swedish brand. If you only had 50 things to furnish your apartment, what would they be and look like? This was the starting point of the latest collaboration between the Swedish furniture giant IKEA and ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. “A company like IKEA engaging with a school like ECAL challenges both parties around contemporary design practices and proves that Design can be collaborative as well as democratic” explains ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos. In the prospect of the Democratic Design Days in Älmhult, Sweden, IKEA s Design Manager, Marcus Engman, and its design team invited 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design students of ECAL to rethink basics, fundamental pieces of furniture and accessories for life and work at home - flexible and functional products - with a strong focus on affordability and sustainability. “Together with IKEA s design team, we tried to give the students a real taste of how it is to work with the largest furniture brand in the world: visiting their headquarters in Sweden and bringing them to factories in Poland. Something that only a handful of designers will experience in their career” says ECAL Head of Bachelor Industrial Design Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard. Under the guidance of designer Nicholai Wiig-Hansen, familiar with IKEA s values and work processes, the students produced a range of 50 essentials across all product areas, from chairs to cutlery, and textiles to lightings. As part of the design process, Wiig-Hansen wanted the students to work as a group, discover themselves, their strengths and weaknesses, and know where they can be valuable in a team. Nicholai Wiig-Hansen explains: “IKEA is about group effort, and I think teamwork is about designers leaving their ego aside for a moment and pushing together as a whole. This is something we unfortunately don t see enough in school projects where the process is often linear and idealised”. http://ikea.today/

Comme des Loups Project
Comme des Loups

Comme des Loups The Wolf patrol, led by Julie, a young scout leader, goes off wilderness camping in the mountains. Hugo, a high-ranking scout goes with them to assess the young woman s leadership skills. A film by Aude Sublet, photographed by Raphaël Dubach Fiction / 20 min Synopsis The Wolf patrol, led by Julie, a young scout leader, goes off wilderness camping in the mountains. Hugo, a high-ranking scout goes with them to assess the young woman s leadership skills. While the young wolves have fun, Julie recalls her first camp when Hugo was a handsome, young scoutmaster. Comment How to film certain scouting rituals? How to frame a group of children? How to get closer to the natural light in the mountains? Raphaël Dubach, student cinematographer, and the young director Aude Sublet answer these questions. Together they have found the right distance to look at, forming an almost organic duo. Like wolves is filmed with grace and fluidity, mainly with a handheld camera, in sumptuous yet never illustrative settings. Between the darkness of the night games and the whiteness of the day, the love desire of the adult scouts oscillates, under the inquisitive and amused gaze of the "little wolves". They point their guns at the cashier, who despite their yelling, fails to react the way they d expected… Comment The din of an automatic door slamming. The din of a freezer motor. The deafening ventilation of an air conditioner. A very close-up on a hearing aid. Welcome to the ear of Martien, a young man with a hearing impairment, employed in a gas station, who, one night, is going to undergo an extraordinary experience... Maxime Pillonel s challenge is to make us see, hear and, above all, make his handicap an expressive force, just like his hero. The distortion of the sounds, the precision of the deaf dialogues, the sustained rhythm of the editing, the overkill of characters, each one more out of place than the other, make this comedy a fable on the difference. The choice in Martian is to make us laugh, and here, crack, boom, wizzz, it works! Bruno Deville / Director

Fedor Project
Fedor

Fedor Two young boys have stolen some expensive scarves and are being pursued. To get out of town, they hijack a young girl s vehicle. She ends up following them as they flee. A short film by Hugo Radi, photographed by Augustin Losserand Fiction / 25 min Synopsis Two young boys have stolen some expensive scarves and are being pursued. To get out of town, they hijack a young girl s vehicle. She ends up following them as they flee. Comment This title mixes literary reminiscences as the film does cinematographic references. As a spectator, one has the impression of never being in front of a narrative taken in hand and led to a good port, but rather that of assisting to the quickly tired hatching of a possible story. Nothing is completely accomplished and yet everything appears. The film is not that of its heroes (locked in their cage of fear, desire, disgust, innocence, their cage of childhood in too large bodies) but is another character (the fourth) of the improbable encounter between petty thieves and a bourgeoise. And it is a clever way of Hugo to tell us nothing of the difficulty of jealousy between two brothers, of the desire that wanders, of the defeat of bare feet against the mechanics of drones, but to make us feel, hear, experience them. Of adolescence (no longer an easy theme for a graduation film but a sort of obligatory subject) Fedor is proof of this through the test. Ma Yan Chan - Waves of Transition Project
Ma Yan Chan - Waves of Transition

Jonas Scheu – Ma Yan Chan - Waves of Transition Since generations, the dockers and their families live and work at the Ayeyarwady riverbank in Mandalay, the ancient royal capital of Myanmar. In a time of great transition, their lifestyle is subdued to lasting transformations. Against their will, the authorities try to dislocate them into newly built concrete buildings. Documentary / 29 mn Synopsis Since generations, the dockers and their families live and work at the Ayeyarwady riverbank in Mandalay, the ancient royal capital of Myanmar. In a time of great transition, their lifestyle is subdued to lasting transformations. Against their will, the authorities try to dislocate them into newly built concrete buildings. Comment On a boat, the silence is disturbed by morning noises and we can gradually guess, between the waves, a transition, a place where people live as best they can with solidarity, resistance and dignity, distrusting the promises of a better future. The transformation of a society is too often done on the backs of the underprivileged, their vital space being threatened for the benefit of others. With an extraordinarily fine eye, Jonas Scheu allows us to discover a historical moment in Burma. His aesthetic choices, in the service of a human perspective, support the protagonists in pale, luminous and transparent images. UnderWater Project
UnderWater

Audrey Bersier – UnderWater Valentina is waiting for her brother Dino. They re going to spend Easter together. Only this time, Dino will be accompanied by Leonore. Fiction / 17 min Synopsis Valentina is waiting for her brother Dino. They re going to spend Easter together. Only this time, Dino will be accompanied by Leonore. Comment Italy. A childhood home. The sweetness of a grandmother. The strength of a relationship between a brother and a sister. Valentina is younger, a teenager, and she will remain so forever. She is dead. And she does not understand that one can grow old, fall in love, move away from childhood to make one s own life like Dino who comes back to introduce the woman he loves. The resolutely poetic point of view of the script met the very beautiful incarnation of its young actress who knew how to magnify it, to go beyond it. Curiously, the character of the ghost, Valentina, is the most alive of the film. She lives an eternal present, a demanding adolescence that each shot manages to render with sensitivity. And because she loves her brother, because she understands that he must live far from her memory, Valentina decides to leave, to die again, in all discretion. Raphaëlle Desplechin / Screenwriter

«ECAL Graphic Design» exhibition at the D Days Paris,30.05–05.06.2016,Boon, Paris Invited by Eyes on Talents, ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne presents an exhibition of projects realised by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction on the occasion of the D Days Paris (Boon Gallery) from 31 May to 5 June 2016 (cocktail 1 June from 7pm to 11pm). HD Images ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. «ECAL Graphic Design» exhibition Monday 30 May from 11am to 5pm for the press and private visits Tuesday 31 May to Sunday 5 June, from 10am to 8pm Cocktail Wednesday 1 June, from 7pm to 11pm Boon 9 Rue de Lesdiguières 75004 Paris http://boonparis.com Book "ECAL Graphic Design" Distributed by JRP|Ringier Collection Anthologies & Art Theory www.jrp-ringier.com Edited by: Angelo Benedetto, Lionel, Bovier, Vincent Devaud (Graphic design), Gilles Gavillet (Graphic design), Alexis Georgacopoulos Authors: Angelo Benedetto, Alexis Georgacopoulos, François Rappo Photography: Philippe Fragnière Technical specifications: Hardcover, 225 x 295 mm, 160 pages, 64 color images, English/French, March 2016 ISBN: 978-3-03764-455-3 Price: CHF 48 / EUR 40 / £ 30 / US 49.95

ECAL Conference: Swiss Typefaces

ECAL Conference: Swiss Typefaces,27.05.2016,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL ECAL Conference: Ian Party & Emmanuel Rey (Swiss Typefaces), Lausanne Conférences ECAL Ian Party & Emmanuel Rey (Swiss Typefaces), Lausanne Vendredi 27 mai, 17h, Auditoire Leenaards, ECAL Their passion is type design. Having studied graphic design at ECAL, Ian Party and Maxime Buechi founded Swiss Typefaces in 2003, a company that designs typefaces that can be purchased from their online shop. They create complete alphabetic character sets that are comprised of about 800 different signs, which in part are composed of upper and lower case letters along with numerals. These two friends have known each other since their teenage years, 14 years old to be exact, they used to graffiti the streets of Lausanne together. Always knowing they wanted to be independent to create their art, they established themselves under the name B&P Typefoundry and gained some notoriety as a great force in the type design world when creating some custom typefaces for publications and companies like Vogue, L Officiel, Esquire, SangBleu, Mugler and more recently SKY TV and the City of Stockholm. As of 2011, Emmanuel Rey who also studied graphic design at ECAL joined the team and is now co-CEO and design director, with Ian Party. The company was renamed Swiss Typefaces the same year. These two designers now sit on the board of directors and oversee all affaires and creative decisions for the company. www.swisstypefaces.com

PUNKT. We are more dependent than ever on electronic devices. There s the fancy phone, watch or tablet, constantly vibrating and begging for attention; but let s not forget the simple tools of everyday life. Those basic objects that help in your daily routines: waking up in the morning, connecting the power plug, or talking to someone with a good old-fashioned landline. How can we make these better, more intuitive, or get rid of any unnecessary functions and simplify both their use and formal language? Thilo Alex Brunner, head of the Master Product Design programme, provides some possible answers to theses questions: “To cooperate with both Petter Neby (Punkt founder/president) and the Jasper Morrison Office for Design (Punkt. art director) means a great deal for us, since we share many ‘Swiss design values such as efficiency and simplicity – but always with an element of surprise.” Under the guidance of designer Augustin Scott de Martinville, the students product ideas are diverse and range from weather stations to wall printers, and torches to projectors. Collaboration with Reuge – 2016

Collaboration with Reuge – 2016 On the occasion of Baselworld from 17th to 24 March 2016, ECAL and Reuge present four music boxes realised by students of the MAS Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship. MEDITATION Clément Beaugé This project is a new interpretation of what a music box can do. Inspired by the idea of using your senses, this is a piece that you can enjoy visually, you can feel, you can smell and of course, you can listen to. The magical music, the candle sent with its delicate light will transport you into world of relaxation. It won t be long before your new music box becomes your favorite ritual for relaxing at home. This music box is simple and elegantwith a pleasant surprise, the mechanical movement makes the candle turn. The candle platform isdirectly attached to the spring-housing, so when the movement starts you can see the candle turn around the music box. Approximately 8 to 9 turns when the movement is fully charged. HARMONY Einat Kirschner This music box is inspired by contemporary design. At first glance the music box appears to be a modern speaker or portable radio. This look allows the piece to easily fit the modern style that speaks to a younger audience while still enjoying the soothing traditional sound of a music box. The design was created using the traditional music box materials but with a new interpretation of the design. The key, which becomes a main element in the design, takes its shape from the modern collection of Reuge music boxes and the volume button of radios and speakers. This music box can be both hung on a wall or stationed on a table. With this new design we give you the possibility of having a unique music box that can be very easily moved from your living to your bedroom or the bathroom, ... The perforated pattern on the box allows the music to come through and highlights the key that turns slowly while the music is playing. DISCOVER Jungyou Choi A surprising piece that opens in an original way. Often our music boxes are closed and the movement inside isn t easily seen or, sometimes its not even possible to see the movement at all! With this original opening concept we wanted to show more of the beautiful movement and allow the costumer to have a playful music box. There are two metal pieces that cover the movement and protect it. These covers slide in one direction from the front to the back or in the opposite direction. Just slide the first or second cover or both and discover a beautiful golden-colored 36 note musical movement. The graphics on the first cover, made with holes, allows you to see the second cover and creates a dynamic object with an overlay of colours and materials. ALPHORN Pauline Masson Limited edition of 10 pieces signed by the Swiss craftsman. What could be more natural then for a Swiss company with over 150 years of experience to be inspired by an iconic Swiss instrument, the Alphorn. This music boxis a reinterpretation of the traditional Alphorn which is a symbolic object of Switzerland and the Swiss craftsmanship. The box is made from a very rare wood, the exceptional resonance spruce. This wood which is over 200 years old is the fundamental type of wood chosen by stringed instrument makers. It combines lightness, ensuring an excellent response to vibrations, with rigidity and tonicity guaranteeing substantial mechanical resistance. It originates from the Risoud Forest, (located right next to our factory) one of the largest and oldest in Europe. Even in the age of Stradivarius, specialists sourced tone wood from this forest which, thanks to its poor soil and its harsh climate, produces wood of exceptional quality. Be surprised by the amazing sound of this special music box, made by the magical alliance of this unique wood and our mechanical musical movement.
