Direction workshop with Patric Chiha In partnership with La Manufacture, the Cinema Dapartment invited austrian director Patric Chiha for a direction workshop destined to 3rd year students. Head of workshop: "The deepest thing about man is his skin. Although it s not its subject, this beautiful phrase by Paul Valéry speaks to me of the essence of cinema: we only film surfaces and nothing else. During the workshop, I d like to work with the students from ECAL and La Manufacture on a series of screen tests, essays, shots... a bit like what you d do during a casting. For me, a casting is not a moment of verification or testing, but of research and encounter. What can directors and actors do together? Where does this first meeting lead us? How do we approach and film the other? How can we avoid trapping them in a preconceived image, and instead liberate their multiple identities? I don t believe in directing actors, except that perhaps, in an encounter, we direct each other. I believe much more in the tools of cinema - the camera, the light, the music... - as an invitation to play, to surprise, to emotion. Over the five days of the workshop, we ll use a series of improvisations, filmed in natural or artificial light, with or without words, trusting in the mysteries of faces, the pace of bodies and the rhythms of gestures - in everything that may at first seem superficial - and without resorting to scripts, to try to reach emotions." Manor Cultural Prize 2026 awarded to Lucas Erin Congratulations to artist Lucas Erin, ECAL graduate, who has been awarded the 2026 Manor Cultural Prize for the canton of Vaud. The jury was impressed by his approach, both precise and poetic. Created in 1982 to support emerging Swiss talent, the Manor Cultural Prize is awarded every two years by a jury of experts. Presented at a key moment in the careers of young artists, the prize offers significant momentum for their work and contributes to the promotion of contemporary art in the canton of Vaud. The award also includes a solo museum exhibition at MCBA and the publication of a catalogue. Born in 1990 in Clamart, France, Lucas Erin holds a Master s degree in Visual Arts from ECAL, where he also worked as a teaching assistant for several years. His practice spans installation, sculpture and video. Deeply interested in the notion of contact, as traced through objects, and attentive to the shifting boundary between interior and exterior, Lucas Erin explores what succeeds or fails in the act of exchange. Through carefully constructed arrangements, found objects and meticulously crafted sculptures, he creates spaces rich with overlapping histories and emerging narratives. Influenced by thinkers of creolisation, his process relies on association, recovery and displacement to allow new meanings to emerge within the exhibition space. His work has been the subject of several solo exhibitions in Switzerland and France, and has also been featured in numerous group shows. Between 2013 and 2020, he was actively involved in the independent art scene as co-founder of Happy Baby Gallery in Crissier, a team member of La Colonie in Paris, and a collaborator on various curatorial projects between Paris and Lausanne. The artist will present a solo exhibition in the Project Space at MCBA in autumn 2026, accompanied by a publication. lucaserin.com @_lucas.erin_
ECAL × Images Vevey Lecture - Rineke Dijkstra,07.05.2025,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL ECAL welcomes Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra for a talk on her contemporary approach to portraiture. Since the early 1990s, Rineke Dijkstra has produced a complex body of photographic and video work, offering a contemporary take on the genre of portraiture. Her large-scale color photographs and videos, mainly of young, typically adolescent subjects, present subtle and minimal contextual details, encouraging us to focus on the exchange between photographer and subject, and on the relationship between viewer and viewed. Born in The Netherlands, in 1959, Dijkstra studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam. She has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Johannes Vermeer Prijs (2020), the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography (2017), SPECTRUM – International Prize for Photography of Stiftung Niedersachsen (2017), and The Citibank Private Bank Photography Prize (1999). Over the past three decades, she has exhibited her work in renowned institutions around the world, including the Art Institute of Chicago (2001), Jeu de Paume in Paris (2005), La Caixa in Barcelona (2005), Fotomuseum Winterthur (2005), Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (2006), Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco (2012), the Solomon R. VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS,04–13.04.2025,Nyon As guest of honour at the 56th edition of the Visions du Réel festival in Nyon, filmmaker Raoul Peck will be giving a masterclass on Tuesday 8 April, organised in partnership with the Cinémathèque suisse. The programme also includes five films by the ECAL s Cinema Department and alumni. MASTERCLASS: RAOUL PECK Filmmaker, Haiti Born in Haiti in 1953, and raised in Congo, New York, France and Germany, Raoul Peck is one of the most important filmmakers of the late 20th and early 21st century. Over the course of the last forty years, the filmmaker has anchored his complex body of work, which includes internationally acclaimed feature films and documentaries, in a deep political commitment. The genesis of his cinematographic tales stems in equal measure from his multicultural personal experience, his journey as an activist, and what he refers to as a “Marxist reading” of the global economy. An indefatigable narrator of tales as seen from the viewpoint of those subject to domination, Raoul Peck has also questioned the links to capitalism in his own personal history, haunted by the ghosts of colonialism. His films examine omissions from official Western history, shining a light on aspects ignored by this account, often sketching a portrait of politicians or artists who have openly deconstructed it, such as Patrice Lumumba in Lumumba, La Mort du prophète, a feature film released in 1990, followed bythedocumentary Lumumba (2000), James Baldwin in I Am Not Your Negro (2016), and, most recently, Ernest Cole with Ernest Cole: Lost and Found (2024). Summoning the past to examine the present and rejecting any call to neutrality, Raoul Peck s work is a reinvention of activist cinema, which he transforms using a cinematographic, poetic and highly subjective language, freely intermingling genres and formats. Exterminate All The Brutes, a hybrid series in four parts (produced by HBO) – which will also be screened during the Festival – is a perfect example of this: it is a journey back in time, a radical re-examination of the history of European colonialism, from America to Africa, using personal, visual and literary narration to starkly revisit the darkest hours in human history right up to the present day. It won a Peabody Award in 2022, and was also the subject of a critical and literary essay. An event in collaboration with the Cinémathèque suisse. Watches and Wonders Geneva 2025 ECAL x Ceramaret At the invitation of Watches and Wonders Geneva, ECAL will present a brand-new project in partnership with Ceramaret, a leading Swiss company in the manufacture and high-precision machining of technical ceramics. To mark the occasion, a selection of five jewellery and bracelet designs will be on display at the LAB, a venue dedicated to innovation and design. Thanks to this first collaboration with the Neuchâtel-based manufacturer, students in MAS Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship got to discover a state-of-the-art machine park. Renowned for developing and producing components for the luxury watchmaking industry, Ceramaret s teams contributed their expertise to this ambitious research. Combining innovation with creativity, the project brings together the know-how of specialised engineers in materials science and the boundless inventiveness of an up-and-coming generation of designers. Following the presentation of the students 15 concepts, five designs were selected and prototyped in technical ceramics, using additive technologies – a 3D printing process that provides the possibility to create intricate, previously unimaginable shapes. This collection, including bracelets inspired by fine watchmaking and innovative jewellery designs, draws its inspiration as much from the beauty of organic forms as from the complexity of systems derived from engineering. Visual Identity BA3 S1 2024-2025 Through the prism of visual identity, this project addresses issues of graphic language and artistic direction. Each stage of the project examines an aspect of the development of a visual identity: research, concept, visual language, design and communication. RADIONModular visual identity designed for the RADION club in Amsterdam. Designed to be both recognisable and impactful, it adapts to all formats and uses in order to meet the needs of a nightclub in a highly competitive environment. HS UHT USTThis project explores a potential overhaul of the Swiss Shooting Federation s visual identity in order to place it in a more contemporary and rigorous context. By moving away from the traditional clichés associated with shooting sports, this new identity aims to reposition the federation by emphasising excellence, precision and modernity in order to appeal to a new audience. La jetée In 1962, French filmmaker Chris Marker released La Jetée. It was an experimental film made up of hundreds of 35 mm black and white shots. It tells the story of a journey through time in a distorted post-apocalyptic Paris. The visual identity is based on an original typography designed to pay homage to Marker s raw material and its French context, and transcribes the idea of sequencing and light projection. It evolves through a teaser for a screening of La Jetée and a booklet containing the entire film script. ICONOHow do you talk to images? Should exhibition images be shown or not? Collages, appropriationists, the whole world up to the present day, a constellation of images... Since the beginning of the 20th century, iconographic artists have been appropriating images produced on an industrial scale. The images of these same artists form the name of the fictitious exhibition ICONO. By re-appropriating them, identity uses their codes to communicate. ApneaNumbers are omnipresent in the world of freediving, whether measuring depth or the duration of an immersion. This visual identity is based on a variable typography with two axes, each representing one of these parameters. Duration is illustrated by the change in the fat of the counter-forms, symbolising how full the diver s lungs are. Depth is represented by the thickness of the contours, evoking the gradation of colours that darken with immersion. The animation of these variables creates a breathing effect, echoing the rhythm of apnea. Orpheum TheaterNow abandoned, the Orpheum Theater in New Bedford, USA, had its heyday at the beginning of the XXᵉ century. To illustrate its transition from 6ᵉ to 7ᵉ art, the identity of this film library traces the three major periods that marked this venue. It combines neoclassical ornamentation, as reinterpreted in the Art Deco era, with a typographic structure inspired by flyers from the golden age of theatre. The whole is geometrically
Editorial Design BA3 2024-2025 The third-year students had to produce an edition over half a term, choosing as their subject an event that had appeared in the newspaper on the date of the first lesson. In a world saturated with images, photography becomes a trophy, often overshadowing any ethical considerations. This phenomenon is striking in tourism, where capturing replaces understanding, reducing individuals, landscapes and cultures to mere visual objects. This edition explores these abuses through images printed by acetone transfer, retaining only their imprint. A materialization of the erasure of the subject in favour of its photographic trace. Réclamer l image Avoir du chien is an editorial proposal on the unique link between fashion icons and their pets through the ages. It s a journey into these relationships, from the intimate to the public sphere, and their mutual influence, whether on clothing style or the way people think and create. From Choupette to Toutou or Balthazar, this fascination with four-legged companions extends to the world of fashion, where they can become a veritable source of inspiration. After all, isn t it said that like master, like dog? Avoir du chien Who has the power to establish a heritage? When a selection process based on elitism is imposed, it leads to the obscuring of cultures, traditions and folklore. This book explores the issues involved in heritage preservation through the lens of a vanished building whose history lives on: the Bastille. Destroyed during the French Revolution, it survives through a proliferation of engravings, replicas and fragments scattered all over Paris. La Bastille Once upon a Hoax; a skeptic s fairytale Once upon a Hoax; a skeptic s fairytale is a hybrid of fairy tales and fake climate sceptic reports. By placing the arguments of climate deniers in a fairytale universe, their absurdity is exposed by putting them on the same level as imaginary stories. The Storm Boris is a book that explores the formation of occluded cold low storms through the example of the Boris storm, which occurred on 11 September 2024. The book follows the four key phases in its development. Paper types and sizes have been defined according to temperature and atmospheric pressure, allowing a physical understanding of the storm s dynamics. The Storm Boris

Félix Vallotton, un hommage,29.01–25.05.2025,Musée Jenisch, Vevey To celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the death of Félix Vallotton, the Musée Jenisch Vevey has invited ECAL Bachelor Fine Arts to pay tribute to this emblematic Swiss artist in a group exhibition. Inspired by Félix Vallotton s engraving practice, which captured the atmosphere of late 19th-century Parisian society, Denis Savary invited students in ECAL s Bachelor Fine Arts program to design a collective exhibition of printed images. To evoke Félix Vallotton s contemporary and typically Parisian spaces for disseminating images and ideas, Morris columns are recreated and scattered throughout the museum. These pieces of street furniture, conceived as modular exhibition devices, house a motley production of printed images, leaflets, posters and butterflies that reflect the cultural offerings and voices of the present day. Like the original models, these columns also provide a multi-functional interior space, serving as a storeroom, public toilet or telephone booth.DATES & SCHEDULE29.01-25.05.2025 Tuesday-Sunday, 11am-6pmVENUEMusée Jenisch Vevey Av. de la Gare 2, 1800 VeveyOPENINGJanuary 28, 2025 at 6.30pmWEBSITEmuseejenisch.ch

Genius Loci - Spirit of the place – 2025 Genius Loci, or the spirit of the place, refers to the unique identity or essence of a location. In architecture, this principle suggests that the specific characteristics of a place should be reflected and extended in a design. In the case of the second-year graphic design students, they have applied this principle to communication projects focused on promoting or extending the identity of a particular place through design. Their work likely explores how to visually capture and communicate the essence of a space, using graphic design elements that resonate with the architectural features or history of the place. porteous Édition Par De la Petite arvine au dom pérignon Calendriers imprimés à la presse manuelle Par ateliers de l espérence Édition Par Grand Hôtel du cervin Poster Par 25 Édition Par Porteous Identité visuelle Par

ECAL LECTURE – MATHIEU LEHANNEUR,08.10.2024,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL ECAL welcomes Mathieu Lehanneur for a lecture on October 08, 2024. There s a word that often comes back to Mathieu Lehanneur s lips: magic. The French designer infuses his work with a touch of the irrational to arouse curiosity, provoke emotion or evoke wonder. Known the world over for his work and his talent for bringing together art, design, science and technology, the creator, born in 1974, is one of the few designers of his generation to embrace so many creative fields. His radically multidisciplinary approach is illustrated by the broad typology of his projects: from objects to architecture, from art to products, from one-off pieces to cutting-edge technologies. Mathieu Lehanneur produces and distributes his creations worldwide via his eponymous brand. Following the inauguration of the Factory, the designer will unveil across the Atlantic his new Pied-à-terre in New York in spring 2024. This exclusive space, located in one of the city s most beautiful skyscrapers, will be the setting for his universe and the dialogue between his latest pieces. Mathieu Lehanneur is a leading figure in the world of design, and winner of the “Grand Prix de la Création de la Ville de Paris”. For the 8th year, the Fondation USM has rewarded a group of students from ECAL s Bachelor s degree in Visual Communication, whose Anthracite project aims to raise public awareness of the effects of light pollution on a sustainable future. The 8th edition of the Bouse de la Fondation USM honors the project by Rebecca Alfandary, Emma Louise Grosu and Phinn Sallin-Mason, students in ECAL s Visual Communication department. Anthracite is a reflection of the night sky, which is no longer as dark as it should be. The project focuses specifically on Swiss biodiversity, and aims to raise awareness of the significant impact of light pollution on pollination. It highlights how artificial light disturbs nocturnal insects, interfering with their natural behaviors and ultimately threatening their existence. Today, 60% of Swiss moths are threatened. The project, which combines powerful images with specific information and solutions, consists of a book, a video and an image installation specially designed for the La Becque garden, where it will be on display from September 19 to 22, 2024.VENUELa Becque | Artist Residency Chemin de La Becque 1 CH-1814 La Tour-de-PeilzDATES & SCHEDULE19.09–22.09.2024 11:00–19:00 Free entryWEBSITEfondationusm.org
BURNING CORSO - Thomas Mailaender In the spring of 2024, Thomas Mailaender and the students of the ECAL Bachelor in Photography entered the ruins of the club with the intention of making it resonate once again. Between archaeology, documentary research, and imaginative speculations, the group of adventurers crafted a surprising exhibition path blending mold and glitter, ashes and glamour. For one night, the Corso was filled with explosive sounds and images in a fiery tribute to the nights of Renens.

Loris Ciaburri – Lux Vitae Lux Vitae is a feature-length screenplay developed over two years as part of the ECAL/HEAD Master of Cinema program. The project was built from a synopsis, through various treatment versions to a V1 screenplay. Anne Brouillet supervised the writing process throughout. Lux Vitae is a film set in La Chaux-de-Fonds, incorporating the local socio-historical context. The film follows the story of Anica, a polyamorous, pansexual watchmaker who, following an accident, becomes a paraplegic. Her sex life is limited, so she decides to seek assisted suicide and meets Max, an EXIT counsellor. These two people, totally opposed in their sexuality, come together and bond intimately.
Shaping the future of cinema: ECAL listen to their graduates Just a few days before the opening of the Locarno Film Festival 2024, where several ECAL films will be shown, ECAL and HEAD unveil the results of a survey aimed at shaping the future of cinema training. To guide the development of their HES-SO Bachelor s and Master s programs in Film, the Film Departments at ECAL and HEAD have collaborated to conduct a survey of their graduates. To carry out this project, the research and polling institute gfs.bern was commissioned to design the online questionnaire, while the Observatoire romand de la culture was responsible for organizing focus groups. This is the first initiative of its kind to be carried out among film graduates. Two key findings emerge from the survey: 77% of graduates surveyed are currently working in the film industry Nearly 2/3 of graduates surveyed would choose to study film at ECAL or HEAD again The aim is to fine-tune ECAL and HEAD film courses by analyzing the career paths and feedback on the academic experience of the last fifteen graduating classes. This information is essential for making informed decisions to improve the curricula.

So, how can we live better? – 2024 #2 Beyond questions of functionality, comfort and individual or collective well-being, the built environment is capable of responding in a stimulating way to societal, energy and environmental challenges. Workplaces, homes, public spaces, interiors and streets are all driven by real statements of intent that motivate their design. The 2nd year Graphic Design students worked on a communication based on one of these principles (or others) and on the architectural creation that refers to it in order to promote it. Ailleurs Ici Édition Ailleurs Ici is the story of 132 route de la Fruitière. During their retirement, the two former teachers René and Anne-Marie Favre explored the world. Their travels are above all encounters, the interests of enthusiasts. A history book of faraway lands for René, and a fantastic but tangible herbarium for Annie. But when they return from these expeditions, it s their house that changes. As if undergoing a second metamorphosis. The old renovated barn at 132 Route de la Fruitière has been given a final chrysalis. The walls are filled with colourful objects and prints of exotic negatives. The stones here are filled with prints from elsewhere. Without intending to, René and Annie have turned 132 Route la Fruitière into a museum inhabited by its curators. Elsewhere Here is their catalogue, retracing each of René and Annie s journeys through objects as mystical as they are foreign. Par LEs vieux Blocs Édition Les vieux blocs traces the history of a group of buildings in the Marolles district of Brussels. Emblematic of Art Nouveau architecture, it now represents a meeting point between a social building and an architectural one. This project invites us to explore this controversial dynamic by bringing together the tourist side and the social side in the same architecture, with a testimonial from a neighbour and images of tourists strolling through the district. Par Terrain Gurzelen Édition It s important, even temporarily, to create parentheses in society, bubbles of utopia that can burst at any moment. The energy that emanates from these ephemeral moments is unique. Gurz is a sensory stroll that hijacks, appropriates and translates the materiality of the Terrain de la Gurzelen, a football pitch temporarily occupied by the residents of the city of Biel. The aim is to leave a trace of the life of this surreal place, which will soon disappear. Par 14 21 Vidéo This simulation shows the duality between the inflows and the threats posed by the Grande Dixence dam to the population of the valleys below. It traces the hypothetical course of water from the dam to the town of Sierre. Par CITY STADIUM LEAGUE Édition The city stadium is a multi-purpose urban facility designed for sporting activities and an ideal meeting place for local residents, reinforcing social cohesion. CITY STADIUM LEAGUE, halfway between the famous vignette collection albums and reportage, is an immersive object retracing an amateur football tournament held on 7 and 8 May 2024 in Renens. It highlights not only the sporting event itself, but also the social and unifying impact of the event. Par Hotel à gogo Édition The aim was to pay homage to the abandoned Grand Hôtel Chaumont & Golf in Neuchâtel. Having closed, because it was recluse of any civilization, in the heights of Neuchâtel. At the time it was in operation, the hotel used to organise themed activities to attract customers, but these were unsuccessful and the hotel went bankrupt. So I based the concept of my edition on this theme, recreating melancholy costume scenes inside the hotel, as if someone had never stopped carrying out these activities in this place frozen in time. I did all this with the help of official documents I d picked up on the spot, such as activity reports and flyers promoting the evenings, the bands, the fancy dress costumes and the concerts. These are included in the edition to accompany the photographic sequence. Par

In the first season, with the complicity of Claude Emmanuelle Gajan Maull, the young photographers have fluidified the iconic bottles with their gendered silhouettes — Le Mâle, Le Classique, Le Beau and La Belle — in a fresh LGBTQIA+ perspective. With this upcoming season, the project evolves around the Scandal fragrance, with the creation of still lives in which the liquid, dry and organic contrasting textures evoke the essence of the perfume, its bottle design and its complexities. Through staging, the perfumes become the backdrop for stories of transgression and fantastical projections. Under Your Smell offers a hypnotic and immersive experience through monumental fabric prints all around the exhibition areas. Giant image-cushions welcome the public to lay down and celebrate gender fluidity and the ever changing definitions of beauty and self expression.RELATED EVENTS

L ECAL AT VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS,12–21.04.2024,Nyon As guest of honour at the 55th edition of the Visions du Réel festival in Nyon, filmmaker Jia Zhang-Ke will be giving a masterclass on Tuesday 16 April, organised in partnership with the Cinémathèque suisse. The programme also includes six films by the ECAL s Cinema Department and alumni. MASTERCLASS: JIA ZHANG-KE Cinéaste, Chine Moderated by Jean-Michel Frodon, film critic and journalist A leading figure in independent Chinese cinema, and contemporary cinema more broadly, Jia Zhang-Ke will be presenting a masterclass exploring his captivating and multifaceted oeuvre which examines the history of his country and the characters who inhabit it. A retrospective of his films will run throughout the festival edition. Born in 1970 in the mining region of Shanxi, bordered by the Great Wall of China, Jia Zhang-Ke is a leading light in contemporary cinema. He belongs to a generation of Chinese filmmakers who were profoundly affected by the Tiananmen Square protests. His diverse filmography, which comprises more than 20 short and feature works, borrows elements from both genre and non-fiction cinema. Switching from taught thrillers to documentaries and encompassing a myriad hybrid formats woven together by non-professional actors, fictional works on a canvas of reality, and fantasies bypassing otherwise restrained stories, Jia Zhang-Ke has spent two decades creating a filmography as coherent as it is shifting. His stylistically diverse oeuvre deploys the full range of cinematographic techniques (16 and 35mm, DV, HD, etc.). Approaching his subject as a visual artist, Jia Zhang-Ke offers a subtle and subversive immersion in Chinese society, imbued with a sublimated realism. Resisting censorship and tirelessly defending the cultural significance of his country s cinematic output, Jia Zhang-Ke weaves long-form, epic-style stories to explore personal and multifaceted journeys that challenge the notion of dissolution of the individual within the national narrative. Ever willing to wrestle with the realities of China s recent history, the filmmaker offers a profoundly humanist representation that draws on memories and recollections. To achieve this, Jia Zhang-Ke creates a narrative polysemy that focuses its gaze on the everyday lives of ordinary people living in “intermediate towns” scattered between the rural life and that of the country s burgeoning megacities. By doing so, Jia Zhang-Ke s films dissect the promises and mirages offered under the forced march of modernisation in effect since the 1960s. They examine the effects of this collective story, specifically the imposition of state capitalism on human beings, by providing a romantic and sensitive counter-narrative. An essential and uncompromising filmography that has often fallen foul of the government s strict censorship regime. An event in collaboration with the Cinémathèque suisse. Text: Visions du Réel FILMS As part of Visions du Réel, from April 12 to 21, 6 films by ECAL s Cinema Department and alumni are scheduled. CHRISTIAN MARCLAY × ECAL– PHOTOMATON,29.03–02.06.2024,Photo Elysée Artist Christian Marclay, invited to delve into the Photo Elysée collections in 2021, has explored the thousands of faces recorded by the museum s Photomaton. With him, ECAL s photography students have pored over, scanned and transformed the conserved prints. Four portraits taken by a machine and printed in a few minutes! This is the experience offered by the Photomaton since it was invented in 1924. It was an immediate success, especially with the proliferation of identity documents that require a portrait taken to specific standards. Very few people are unfamiliar with the experience of the Photomaton – the name of this photo booth installed in areas of high footfall. Automated, self-service, available 7 days a week, socially neutral, and above all less expensive than a portrait taken by a professional, and less intimidating too, this photographic process democratises the act of having a portrait taken, quickly, anywhere and at little cost. The ancestor of the Polaroid and the selfie, named after the words “photo” and “automaton”, this unmanned process, a veritable photographic automaton offering four unique prints, has often fascinated artists. A few years ago, Photo Elysée acquired an automated photo studio. Since then, the museum has been inviting members of the public to photograph themselves and, if they wish, leave their portraits to create a collective work of art. Multimedia artist Christian Marclay has explored thousands of faces recorded by the Photo Elysée Photomaton. With him, the students in the ECAL s Bachelor of Photography are making this archive their own through analogue and digital manipulations: collages, kinetic animations, scanning electron microscope and new forms of automation based on artificial intelligence.DATESDu 29 mars au 2 juin 2024ADDRESSPhoto Elysée Pl. de la Gare 17 1003 LausanneWEBSITEwww.elysee.chSTUDENTS, , , , , , , TEACHERASSISTANTS, Angèle Marignac-Serra, OPENING28.03.2024

Visual Identity – 2024 During the visual identity course, the 1st year Graphic Design bachelors had to realize a communication project around a district where they live. FC Liaudet pial Graphic research When I moved into my neighborhood, I quickly got to know my neighbor: Liaudet Pial. Liaudet Pial SA is a plumbing company, a water purification company, a pipefitting company - in short, a company that does all sorts of things involving big, noisy trucks. After immersing myself in their world, I realized that the company had a soccer team playing in the Ligue Romande de Football. I then tried to imagine what this team s visual identity might look like, should it one day miraculously become excellent. by Temps qui passe Research & video This project explores the theme of the passage of time through a black-and-white edition. Illustrating an entire day, from 6:01 a.m. to 5:59 a.m. the following day, it plunges us into the heart of activity on Rue de la Gare. In parallel, a companion edition highlights an old Volkswagen van that has been parked on the street for years, creating a contrast between the constant movement of passers-by and the immobility of the vehicle. This project encourages us to reflect on the notion of time, movement and immutability in our daily urban lives. By Les nouvelles armoiries contheysannes Personalisation catalog The aim of this catalog is to give all residents of the village of Plan-Conthey the opportunity to design their own coat of arms. 6 stages of personalization are detailed, each one representing a category of motifs specific to the design of a coat of arms. By En construction Research & poster In this edition, a reinterpretation of a street under construction is presented. By imagining construction tools and an alternative outcome - innovative buildings - a new universe is explored through collages and future projections, offering a new perspective on urban visual identity. By real district Camo & research Real District is a visual identity project for the Route des Monts neighborhood in Le Locle. Because of the layout of the buildings and windows, as well as being one of the only young people in the area, I feel indiscreetly observed. So I developed a range of camouflage materials to blend in with the neighborhood s various settings. By Balade Research & video A project on the visual identity of a place that brings together different shots of the lakeside. A pleasant place, with a horizon full of subtlety. The landscape is reinterpreted using color palettes and simplified forms to lend a peaceful touch to the environment. At the same time, it adds a poetic touch to the editorial stroll. By
Le livre d artiste - 23/24 As part of the publishing course led by Anouk Schneider and Chi-Long Trieu, 2nd year Visual Communication students had the opportunity to design an artist s book during the first semester. This book project stands out for its contemporary approach aimed at creating an editorial object that harmoniously integrates form and content in the current context of the editorial landscape. Students were encouraged to exploit their artistic freedom at all levels of creation, whether in terms of format, choice of paper, binding, layout, illustrations, text or typography. As part of this course, the artist s book can take shape through various illustration modalities, such as photography, reproduction, contextualization, drawing, 3D, etc. The emphasis is on the author s artistic vision and the means implemented to realize it. Students take on multiple roles as editor, curator and architect, covering the responsibilities of artistic director, designer, photographer, stylist, illustrator, typographer, editor-in-chief, and editorial secretary. This course highlights contemporary editorial design by exploring the narrative potential of a sequence of controlled content. Vietnamese objects: The material culture of resilience in the face of (de)colonisation Cà phê (coffee), atisô (artichoke), xi nê ma (cinema), căng tin (canteen) or xi-măng (cement): in the Vietnamese language, many words bear the imprint of a French origin. And what if the same were true of everyday objects? Somewhere between cultural anthropology, the epistemology of Vietnamese design and the sociology of objects, this research project analyses the production of objects in Vietnam in the light of French colonisation and decolonisation. Through reportage, interviews and research carried out in various archive collections, this book sets out to reveal the mechanisms by which objects, foods, materials and know-how have been integrated into Vietnam until today they can boast authentically Vietnamese characteristics. Like an archive of the present day, through the prism of design and the applied arts, the authors take a decolonial and critical look at the creativity and adaptability of a country that has succeeded in appropriating the techniques of a dominant power. Fiction film workshop with Lionel Baier The 2023 fiction film workshop for 1st year students was lead by Lionel Baier. Head of workshop: "The aim of the workshop was to produce a 3 to 5 minute fiction film during a two days shooting at a single location around Lausanne, based on the script of a pre-existing film. The students saw ten feature films and were assigned one of them. They extracted a scene from it and adapted it. The films ranged from Subway (Luc Besson) to Lazarro Felice (Alice Rohrwacher). Each short film had to be able to be seen independently of the film from which it was taken. The aim of the workshop was to try out the problems of directing actors, cutting and directing without focusing on the script for this first fictional exercise." ECAL LECTURE – El Pampero Cine,24.01.2024,Leenaards Auditorium, ECAL More than just a production company, El Pampero Cine was born in 2002 from the desire of a group of people to experiment and renew the procedures and practices of Argentine cinema. In conference at the ECAL, Wednesday 13 October 2024 at 6.00pm. Part of the formidable revival known as the "New Argentine Cinema", the collective produced films of international renown, such as La Flor (2018), Castro (2009) and Trenque Lauquen (2022), always with a radical economic approach. El Pampero Cine s influence is not confined to aesthetics: its revolution affects above all forms of production and exhibition. Since Balnearios, in 2002, El Pampero Cine has developed a production system based on radical independence from conventional funding sources, which has enabled them to produce consistently fertile output. Historias Extraordinarias confirms that El Pampero Cine has imposed a new way of producing in Argentina, working with budgets that are significantly lower than the smallest industrial productions, without this inferiority of conditions having anything to do with the technical or aesthetic quality of the works. El Pampero Cine is made up of Mariano Llinás, Laura Citarella, Agustín Mendilaharzu and Alejo Moguilansky, Argentine directors, editors, writers and producers. So, how can we live better? – 2024 Beyond questions of functionality, comfort and individual or collective well-being, the built environment is capable of responding in a stimulating way to societal, energy and environmental challenges. Workplaces, homes, public spaces, interiors and streets are all driven by real statements of intent that motivate their design. The 2nd year Graphic Design students worked on a communication based on one of these principles (or others) and on the architectural creation that refers to it in order to promote it. Noli Oblivisci Book In this edition, I analyse the influence of time on the architecture of the Family House, which has been abandoned for many years. Exploring the intergenerational dimension at the heart of this temporal investigation, I have structured each aspect in terms of degrees, generational degrees. As the great-granddaughter of the house s last residents, I represent degree 2, while my father embodies degree 1. So, as we explored the house, we described it by sharing anecdotes and affinities specific to our respective degrees. The investigation thus evolved into a family dimension, going beyond its purely temporal nature. By Ruelle Thomas 21 Book Ruelle Thomas 21 is where my mum s bookshop used to be, on the ground floor of our family home, and which went bankrupt in 2015. Each room was dedicated to a particular audience: cookery books in the kitchen, children s books in the bedroom, and novels in the living room, for adults. The best way for me to express this was to use this separation of the flat to delimit the literary space of each person. I took my point of view as a child who didn t like to read, to experiment with and deconstruct the sequence imposed by literature, using my mum s literary criticism, book covers and a manifesto to make people feel less guilty. By Abri Anti Atomique Book Swiss atomic shelters are an architectural phenomenon that contrasts with the country s neutrality. This is why, when Switzerland publishes documents relating to war and the defence of its citizens, the tone used is very modest, even naïve, given the seriousness of the subjects covered. In the same way, the publication contrasts the seriousness of the subject of shelters with the spectacular beauty of the disasters that justify the use of shelters. By I never felt at home Video "I never felt at home" is about the feeling, the discomfort and the melancholy of never feeling at home, no matter where you live. The discomfort felt outside is brought into the intimacy of the home through projection. By ce qu il reste de la vérité Book Childhood, an ephemeral and singular stage, forms the basis of our identity. "Ce qu il reste de la vérité" is a narrative and personal exploration of childhood in care. The key idea is to present this nuanced experience, oscillating between fleeting happiness and complex issues, through a dual narrative: that of the child who, without really understanding the circumstances, undergoes them with innocence and dissociation; and that of the adult, whose more mature view offers a retrospective reflection on this singular period of life. By Manifeste Photométrique Book This research project involves a technical analysis of lighting interactions within a residential space, with particular emphasis on the mental health criteria engendered by lighting and the visual preferences of potential occupants. The aim of this analysis is to deconstruct the mechanisms and variables influencing interior lighting, architecture and the environment in order to create a synthesis between functionality and aesthetics.
