Collaboration with Hermès 2019

Collaboration with Hermès 2019 Light, Assertive, On the Move How does a man transport his life? In a world in perpetual motion, where new ways of moving, working, consuming and communicating are emerging, the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship at ECAL were led to reflect creatively on the male leather goods objects linked to this societal context. This unique collaboration resulted in the selection of 6 projects, 2 of which were then selected for development by the Maison Hermès and presentation at the Podium (January 2020).

Wasteland Project
Wasteland

Antoine Flahaut – Wasteland Jérôme has failed his High-School leaving exams. He spend the day with his best friend, David before to go to a party. Fiction / 18 min Synopsis Jérôme has failed his High-School leaving exams. His best friend, David, has passed his exams and is getting ready to leave. They spend the day hanging out around their village, where they know every nook and cranny, and in the evening go to a party with their old schoolmates... Summer is just beginning but their friendship seems doomed to end. Comment Antoine Flahaut was to write a feature film script to conclude his studies at ECAL. His preliminary documentation work soon took on the scope of a gigantic research project, commensurate with the ambition of the project. By telling the story of a young man from a working class family in Montbéliard in the spring of 1968, Antoine was indeed proposing to resurrect a world. Wasteland is a gesture. An almost improvised short film, faithful in the background to the scenario of the feature film, but which also frees itself from it to better reconnect with the original inspiration of its author. A series of sensitive and fragile moments that reveal a soul, that of a boy on the border between childhood and manhood. A poem of vertigo in the face of the opacity of life, between nostalgia and the call of the sea, between early disenchantment and great hopes. Emmanuel Salinger / Actor, screenwriter, director

Archigraphiæ. Rationalist Lettering and Architecture in Fascist Rome Project
Archigraphiæ. Rationalist Lettering and Architecture in Fascist Rome

Archigraphiæ. Rationalist Lettering and Architecture in Fascist Rome Letterforms carry messages – in public space, they are powerful propaganda tools. Witness to this fact are the inscriptions placed on display by Emperors to showcase their power across the Roman Empire. During a Summer School at the Swiss Institute in Rome, ECAL MA in Type Design and ISIA Urbino students explored a more recent avatar of this communication tool. During a Summer School at the Swiss Institute in Rome, ECAL MA in Type Design and ISIA Urbino students explored a more recent avatar of this communication tool. During the fascist era in Italy (1922–1943), the rise to power of Benito Mussolini made his revolutionary political party a ruling institution, which had, as its ambition, the creation of an empire modelled on ancient Rome. The visual aesthetic of the Caesars was captured and used by the fascists to position themselves as successors to a glorious tradition. Imagery and photography also played a part in this endeavour, as did architecture and inscription letters. The buildings and monuments of the 1930s frequently display mottos and texts carved in white marble. Latin and Italian were used, and full capitals, in the ancient Roman tradition. While the design of these letters is based on Ancient models, their shapes are definitely modern; sans serif geometric letterforms. In the first instance, Archigraphiæ sought to collect images of inscriptions on monuments, public buildings, graveyards, street plaques in Rome. Then some of those original designs were digitised to reveal their construction, and the ways in which small elements can be capable of turning a neutral geometrical font into a very Italian-style fascist symbol. By mapping this conspicuous feature of fascist propaganda, the Summer School aimed to deconstruct the mechanisms used to promote political ambitions, and to compare this font with other modernist sans serifs of the time. An analysis of the storytelling behind the use of the letterforms allowed students to develop critical thinking about current (political, commercial, militant) uses of type and lettering.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader) (project leader) Jonathan Pierini (project leader)Research teamLecturers and researchers Chiara Barbieri Gianluca Camillini Pippo Ciorra Emilio Gentile Alessandra Tarquini Paul Shaw Carlo Vinti Assistants StudentsECAL MA Type Design , , , , , , , ECAL MA Photographie ISIA Urbino MA in Communication, Design and Publishing Gianluca Ciancaglini, Alberto Malossi, David Mozzetta, Giuseppe RomagnoPeriodseptember 2018Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne ISIA Urbino Istituto Svizzero di RomaDisseminationSummer school Archigraphiæ. Fuori catalogo / Out of production Project
Fuori catalogo / Out of production

Fuori catalogo / Out of production The Fuori catalogo research project calls into question the way we think about the life cycles of contemporary design objects by shifting focus from a product s birth and lifespan to its “end moment”. The research team led by Anniina Koivu (Head of Master Theory, ECAL) and Rosanna Pavoni (scientific director of Fondazione Studio Museo Vico Magistretti), explored the important yet under-researched topic of why and how products cease to be available on the market by examining the vast body of work left behind by Italian architect and product designer Vico Magistretti (1920–2006). One of the seminal figures in postwar Italian design, he based his work on a close collaboration with manufacturers, creating 334 products and furniture objects. Yet only 65 of these design classics are still in production as of January 2020. Researchers drew on the extensive archives of the Fondazione Vico Magistretti, analysed specialist journals and conducted interviews with manufacturers and many of the original decision-makers investigating the manifold factors underpinning the decision to cease production of twelve Magistretti s iconic creations, here employed as case studies. They are also the focus of a portfolio of new images created by ECAL alumni from the Photography courses. The outputs of the research project are disseminated through the book Vico Magistretti: Stories of Objects, published by Triest verlag with graphic design by NORM, available in Italian an English editions.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Rosanna Pavoni (Fondazione studio museo Vico Magistretti)Research teamLecturers and researchers Maddalena Dalla Mura Francesco Zanot Research assistant Photographers PartnerFondazione studio museo Vico MagistrettiPeriodmay 2017 – august 2018Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationPublication Anniina Koivu, Vico Magistretti. Collaboration with Aesop Project
Collaboration with Aesop

Collaboration with Aesop The skincare, haircare and body products specialist Aesop chose ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne to design two accessories for its brand : an electric essential oil burner and a washbag. In doing so, Aesop clearly showed it cared for smart and sustainable design. After an in-depth presentation and a visit to the three Aesop shops in Zurich, 17 ECAL graduate students from the MAS in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship started working under the leadership of professor and designer Tomas Kral. At the end of the workshop, a jury made up of some of the brand executives – among them Mandy Cupper, Head of Product, who had made the trip from Melbourne especially – selected some twenty projects that explored materials as varied as wood, cork, natural resins, ceramic, hand-blown glass and textile. In addition to an aesthetic and innovating design, the students brief included sustainability. Through working prototypes, students imagined projects such as a neoprene washbag inspired from the surfing world or a pocket-size foldable washbag, an essential oil burner producing steam reminiscent of Japanese mountains and a completely transparent oil burner revealing its fan blades and its usual bottle of essential oils. All the other projects also have their own distinctive world in which our bodies and minds are invited to travel through our senses of sight, smell and touch.

Augmented Photography Project
Augmented Photography

Augmented Photography Photography has contributed, throughout its history, to building up a framework of knowledge based on an ability to demonstrate visibly, and therefore objectively, the reality of things. The widespread nature of digital imagery – images that have been created, processed, disseminated or stored as digital data – has led us to review critically the precision of our gaze. In the past, photographic images were deemed to be trustworthy and irrefutable documents. They have now become malleable and plausible data that we instantly assimilate into our visual habits. Since the 1990s, this development has given rise to considerable discussion about the nature of photographic realism, and a questioning of entire areas of activity. The digital creation of images has been accompanied by their manipulation in ways that are similar to painting, sculpture and, more analytically, the computer sciences. In this respect, Web 2.0, by facilitating in the circulation of ideas, things and persons at unprecedented speed, has further accelerated a process that began with the advent of the Internet. This research project allowed us to experiment with new practices and analyse the positions adopted by influential actors, such as photographers, critics and curators. It offered participants conceptual and practical tools to allow them to position themselves in hyper-connected environments. In the absence of any master s degrees in photography in Switzerland, this research helps provide a robust theoretical framework and a way of keeping abreast of the shifting nature of the discipline.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research team (researcher) (research assistant)Visiting lecturersAnn-Christin Bertrand, Estelle Blaschke, Rachel de Joode, Marco De Mutiis, Anne de Vries, Christophe Gaillard, Claus Gunti, Joe Hamilton, Kim Knoppers, Nicolas Nova, Harm Van Den DorpelPeriodoctober 2016 – october 2017Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationPublication Augmented Photography, edited by Milo Keller, Joël Vacheron and Maxime Guyon, ECAL, Renens, 2017 Website augmented-photography.ch

Genesis Project
Genesis

A coproduction between Fondazione Vico Magistretti and ECAL. Exhibition curated by Anniina Koivu & Francesco Zanot. HD Images This exhibition looks at five Vico Magistretti designs, all of which are out of production, through the lenses of five young photographers. The selected objects are: a light, a table, a bookshelf and two chairs. All are iconic, with distinct stories to tell, and all five designs are remarkable for their contemporaneity. Even if (currently) not available on the market, each object is an important reference for contemporary design today. The photographers are Maxime Guyon, Quentin Lacombe, Calypso Mahieu, Nicolas Polli and Jean-Vincent Simonet, all graduates of the Bachelor or Master Photography programmes at ECAL. With their distinct styles, each photographer offers a personal interpretation of the objects. In the process, they generate new desires for the objects that, nonetheless, remain just out of reach. Workshop in Berlin Project
Workshop in Berlin

Workshop in Berlin To celebrate the launch of a new master s degree in photography at ECAL in 2016, the first year students worked together with Taiyo Onorato and Milo Keller (Head of Photography at ECAL) in Berlin for one week to produce a book about the city s architecture in turmoil. Using the wide streets of Berlin as a blank canvas, the students were encouraged to interpret rather than document the spaces of the vast metropolis and build their own story of its distinctive character. The picturesdepict the shift that Berlin has undergone in the past, from the perspective of unexpected encounters, vacant spaces, countless construction sites and shared revelations. The book was printed and bound at Helmut Newton Foundation during the C/O Berlin Book Days, 29.9 – 2.10.2016. Participants: Johannes Bauer, Vilhelm Björndahl, Senta Simond, Nicolas Toulotte, Laura Zoccarato, Marc Asekhame, Calum Douglas, Bastien Gomez, Karla Hiraldo Voleau, Yuliya Khan, Stéphane Mocan, Eunwook Nam, Shin Young Park, Robert Swierczynski, Maria Tasula, Justinas Vilutis, Maria Grazia Grasso The book has been produced in collaboration with C/O Berlin for the Book Days 2016. In search of the Tatzelwurm

Nasthasya Reuter – In search of the Tatzelwurm A massive reptilian body, about 80 cm long, two single forelegs, a large neck and a  thick tail. Here is the description made of the Tatzelwurm. It was provided from several witnesses who confirmed a glance at the animal, in deserted areas of the Swiss mountains. However, until this day no one was able to prove its existence. À La Recherche Du Tatzelwurm explores the trace of the mysterious reptile in an investigation mixing archives and fictional elements. Within this association, I was able to blur the borders between fiction and reality. A massive reptilian body, about 80 cm long, two single forelegs, a large neck and a thick tail. IKEA: Essentials for Modern Living by ECAL Event
IKEA: Essentials for Modern Living by ECAL

IKEA: Essentials for Modern Living by ECAL,08–09.06.2016,Democratic Design Days, Älmhult On the occasion of the Democratic Design Days organised (8th and 9th June) at the IKEA headquarters in Älmhult (Sweden), Bachelor Industrial Design students present " IKEA Essentials for Modern Living by ECAL", a series of projects created in collaboration with the famous Swedish brand. If you only had 50 things to furnish your apartment, what would they be and look like? This was the starting point of the latest collaboration between the Swedish furniture giant IKEA and ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. “A company like IKEA engaging with a school like ECAL challenges both parties around contemporary design practices and proves that Design can be collaborative as well as democratic” explains ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos. In the prospect of the Democratic Design Days in Älmhult, Sweden, IKEA s Design Manager, Marcus Engman, and its design team invited 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design students of ECAL to rethink basics, fundamental pieces of furniture and accessories for life and work at home - flexible and functional products - with a strong focus on affordability and sustainability. “Together with IKEA s design team, we tried to give the students a real taste of how it is to work with the largest furniture brand in the world: visiting their headquarters in Sweden and bringing them to factories in Poland. Something that only a handful of designers will experience in their career” says ECAL Head of Bachelor Industrial Design Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard. Under the guidance of designer Nicholai Wiig-Hansen, familiar with IKEA s values and work processes, the students produced a range of 50 essentials across all product areas, from chairs to cutlery, and textiles to lightings. As part of the design process, Wiig-Hansen wanted the students to work as a group, discover themselves, their strengths and weaknesses, and know where they can be valuable in a team. Nicholai Wiig-Hansen explains: “IKEA is about group effort, and I think teamwork is about designers leaving their ego aside for a moment and pushing together as a whole. This is something we unfortunately don t see enough in school projects where the process is often linear and idealised”. http://ikea.today/

ECAL Conference: Swiss Typefaces Event
ECAL Conference: Swiss Typefaces

ECAL Conference: Swiss Typefaces,27.05.2016,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL ECAL Conference: Ian Party & Emmanuel Rey (Swiss Typefaces), Lausanne Conférences ECAL Ian Party & Emmanuel Rey (Swiss Typefaces), Lausanne Vendredi 27 mai, 17h, Auditoire Leenaards, ECAL Their passion is type design. Having studied graphic design at ECAL, Ian Party and Maxime Buechi founded Swiss Typefaces in 2003, a company that designs typefaces that can be purchased from their online shop. They create complete alphabetic character sets that are comprised of about 800 different signs, which in part are composed of upper and lower case letters along with numerals. These two friends have known each other since their teenage years, 14 years old to be exact, they used to graffiti the streets of Lausanne together. Always knowing they wanted to be independent to create their art, they established themselves under the name B&P Typefoundry and gained some notoriety as a great force in the type design world when creating some custom typefaces for publications and companies like Vogue, L Officiel, Esquire, SangBleu, Mugler and more recently SKY TV and the City of Stockholm. As of 2011, Emmanuel Rey who also studied graphic design at ECAL joined the team and is now co-CEO and design director, with Ian Party. The company was renamed Swiss Typefaces the same year. These two designers now sit on the board of directors and oversee all affaires and creative decisions for the company. www.swisstypefaces.com

Exhibition "1020 Renens" Project
Exhibition "1020 Renens"

Exhibition "1020 Renens" 1020 Renens Exhibition photo 03 mars – 23 mars 2016 Place du Marché, Renens It s all a question of time. A photograph is shot in a fraction of a second, in one instant. A city changes, it transforms; and to be defined into a new image, it could take years, decades or centuries. During one year, the photographer Nicolas Faure has worked together with the 15 students of the 3rd year photography class at ECAL in Renens. They explored various themes such as the documentary of an African community or the life of teenagers in schools or at the pool as well as the every day life at the office or the intimacy of retired people. The images, assembled in a book as a tribute to Nicolas Faure, are pieces of reality that are sometimes raw and sometimes reworked. They let our mind travel around even when we are still here, in Switzerland, in Renens. 1020 RenensExhibition photo03 mars – 23 mars 2016Place du Marché, RenensIt s all a question of time. Signage of the kindergarten and UAPE Prangins Event
Signage of the kindergarten and UAPE Prangins

Lazy Pen Project
Lazy Pen

Nicolas Nahornyj – Lazy Pen After receiving a dozen handwritten letters from my grandmother, I finally decided to answer them. I wanted to combine the practical side of computer-based word processing and the emotional aspect of one s handwriting. This tool allows the user to distort the typeface as they write, using the moving palettes placed beneath their palms. The goal is to be able to produce one s own typography in real time, thus offering a more personal touch.

Scottish Project
Scottish

Tancrède Ottiger – Scottish My graduation project is a typographical interpretation resulting from my interest in typography as much in its historical forms as in its modern aesthetics. Scottish is a character built on the classic models from the Renaissance era but with a radical language. The family is composed of 3 different but complementary cuts: light , regular & bold , and their corresponding italics. The challenge of this design was to conciliate a baroque structure which includes various calligraphic angles with the stability of a simple digital look. Everett Font Family Project
Everett Font Family

Nolan Paparelli – Everett Font Family Everett is a grotesque font family. It s a font with a symmetrical structure, an organic drawing and a digital flavour. I worked on typographic details adding a high tension while keeping reading comfort. The goal was to find the right balance between a font that is graphic and fluid. Five different cuts form a coherent family, offering various design solutions ranging from magazine to poster. Everett is a grotesque font family. RE:STADIA

Frederik Mahler-Andersen – RE:STADIA The stadium is the fusion between architecture and sport, providing a structure to host spectators for various events. While the sport hasn t changed much over the years, the architecture surrounding the field finds itself in a constant state of flux. RE:STADIA explores the future of the stadium. This catalogue enters into a dialogue between architecture and sport, and aims to compare new concepts of stadium architecture by looking at their context, forms, associations and reactions.
