ECAL at Lausanne Jardins 2019 Event
ECAL at Lausanne Jardins 2019

ECAL at Lausanne Jardins 2019,15.06–12.10.2019,Lausanne From 15 June to 12 October at Lausanne Jardins 2019, discover some thirty gardens, including three projects created by ECAL Product Design Master students following a workshop with the Dutch designer Wieki Somers. The three projects presented on the Terrasse de Bellefontaine are: Le Point (Timothée Mion, Fabien Roy, Leonardo Vianello): Perched atop the roof of a car park above the level of the street, The Bellefontaine terrace is inconspicuous and little-used. To attract the attention and incite passers-by to discover this hidden garden, a sail unfolds every time the car park s air vent is activated, like a landmark up in the sky. The blast that comes from the bowels of the earth propels the piece of fabric that twirls around in the wind. Air is the invisible link between all the layers of this place and Le Point makes it visible. The Nocturnal Garden (Jeffery Lambert, Lorenz Noelle, Mathilde Lafaille): Sculptures during the day, stage directors at night: a series of lampshades bring the Bellefontaine terrace to life as night falls. They transform the park, diverting the rays of existing lights onto natural elements for a new experience of the garden. Each reflector creates little scenes with a dramatic interplay between light and nature that varies according to the wind and the rain. Entrance (Samuel Lodetti, Benjamin Bichsel, Jingxiang Zhang): There is something fascinating about gazing into water. Through the transparency of this element, hidden worlds appear and one can get lost in their infinity. Entrance plays on this fascination. Thanks to an optical effect, the park is connected to the various levels of the car park. The small fountain transforms into a bottomless abyss of stratified storeys, and visitors are invited to dive into this endless world. https://lausannejardins.ch/en/

ECAL x Bloc studios: Rational Balance Collection,06–09.06.2019,EDIT Napoli ECAL x Bloc studios: Rational Balance Collection On the occasion of EDIT Napoli from 6 to 9 June 2019, ECAL and Bloc studios present a collection of projects by BA Industrial Design students. IMAGES HD Marble connotes weight, stability and robustness, and is a quintessentially noble material. In light of this, what kind of objects are able to take full advantage of these properties? How can the sensations of balance or weight be fully expressed, while respecting the innate qualities and limits of this substance? This was the question that ECAL /University of Art and Design Lausanne Industrial Design Bachelor s students addressed in 2016 at a workshop led by Swiss designers Joséphine Choquet and Virgile Thévoz. This collection has been jointly developed over recent years by Bloc studios and ECAL, and comprises a selection of objects that focus on the rational balance between materials and proportions – playful ball-joint mirrors, punk marble plates pierced through with steel, marble vases in tension with aluminium, minimal tub plugs and mesmerising wedged vases. Opening: Every day, from 10am to 6pm Vitra Design Museum Charles-Eames-Str. 2 D-79576 Weil am Rhein www.design-museum.de In partnership with the 3D printing company Formlabs, ECAL Master Product Design students present a range of innovative everyday life objects, produced through a print farm within the exhibition and sold directly on site. Projects from ECAL faculty and alumni are also available. The concept was imagined by Camille Blin, head of the Master Product Design, and Christophe Guberan, ECAL tutor. HD Images Brochure with explanations ECAL has turned Spazio Orso 16, a 17th century Milanese palazzo, into a contemporary production site and retail shop inspired by a new vision of digital manufacturing. Lately, most of the product design research into 3D printing has been focusing on new technologies and the shapes they can generate. The idea of this project is to present digital manufacturing as an industrial production tool thanks to a print farm composed of numerous machines printing the same pieces simultaneously. “ECAL Digital Market” offers functional and well-designed everyday objects, created by Master Product Design students as well as by a selection of ECAL-related designers (faculty members and alumni). The project looks into the possibilities of production on demand. It examines the changing environment of manufacturing processes, it emphasizes how fast and transparent today s design industry could become, and experiments with new design details that are too intricate to achieve with traditional manufacturing techniques. Finally, “ECAL Digital Market” highlights the role of the designer in this new production cycle. Thanks to the 3D printers and know-how provided by Formlabs, a large variety of objects such as combs, tape dispensers, mechanical pencils, shoehorns, coat hooks, scissors, spinning tops, shelves and many more are produced and sold on site by the students. The digital files of the objects can also be purchased online: www.ecal-digital-market.ch Press preview Monday 16 April, 4 pm – 6 pm Opening hours Tuesday 17 April – Saturday 21 April, 11 am – 8 pm Sunday 22 April, 11 am – 4 pm Spazio Orso 16 Via dell Orso 16 20121 Milano

ECAL x MacGuffin,02–26.05.2019,Arles + Istanbul Biennial Design "A School of Schools: Design as Learning" is a multi-platform knowledge-based exhibition that uses, tests, and revises a variety of educational strategies UPDATE: "A School of Schools: Design as Learning" is a multi-platform knowledge-based exhibition that uses, tests, and revises a variety of educational strategies. Curated by Jan Boelen — co-founding artistic director of the research program Atelier Luma — with Vera Sacchetti and Nadine Botha for the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Cultureand Arts, it presents the work of over 90 artists and designers from around the world. Among these, ECAL presents "ECAL x MacGuffin (read below). A School of Schools is presented at Luma Arles as part of the Guest Program of Luma Days #3,a yearly forum of art and ideas, which takes place in Arles from May 22to 25, 2019, and presents public events, conferences, professional workshops, displays and art installations. This year, the topic of the forum is: “TOGETHER, a declaration of inter- dependence”. From 02/05/2019 to 26/05/2019 Parc des Ateliers, 45 chemin des Minimes, 13200 Arles, France www.luma-arles.org/fr/articles/school-of-schools Can a magazine be a design school? Or a design school a magazine? This autumn, MacGuffin and Swiss art and design school ECAL present the results of their collaboration during the 4th Istanbul Design Biennial, which is all about design as learning, and learning as design. The exhibition explores the ways in which the two can enrich the other. Last autumn, Dutch product designer Chris Kabel tutored Bachelor Industrial Design students at ECAL in collaboration with design magazine MacGuffin. The students used the magazine s editorial model as a methodology to study the use of everyday things and to design objects derived from them. They modelled their approach on the way the magazine themes its issues, and chose MacGuffins like The Roof, The Shade, The Wheel, The Ruler, The Lock and The Socle as the focus of their investigations. Their research resulted in a range of observational studies, contextual reportages and visual essays on the materiality of the objects, to be used as a basis for designing new objects. The outcome is an exciting collection of narratives and objects that explore The Life of Things, presented in the form of a 3D magazine. From Umbrella Stories and Wheel Stoppers to Real-Life Rulers and a platform for the Bottom of Things. 22 September – 4 November 2018. ECAL Milano 2019: Objects for Nomadic Life by ECAL/Sebastian Maluska Event
ECAL Milano 2019: Objects for Nomadic Life by ECAL/Sebastian Maluska

ECAL Milano 2019: Objects for Nomadic Life by ECAL/Sebastian Maluska,09–14.04.2019,SaloneSatellite, Rho Sebastian Maluska, ECAL Master Product Design graduate (2018), presents three outdoor projects related to a nomadic lifestyle, including camping and travelling. HD Images “Nest” is a low-profile car volume extension, acting as a tent and storage space. Inspired by the sailing world and its technology, it is made up of two frames covered with waterproof sailing fabric. Once it opens up, “Nest” provides sheltered sleeping space for two people. While driving, sport equipment, such as surfboards or skis, can be stored on top or inside of “Nest” between the two fabric layers. Modern mountaineers travel as fast and light as possible, trying out new routes and pushing the boundaries of distance and time. They are never assured of being able to make it home before dark or of getting to the next safe spot before the weather changes. Naturally, a backup option becomes an essential part of your kit. This backup comes in the shape of an “Odon” backpack, essentially a hyper-light shelter solution. This shelter is so light that it can always remain attached to your daypack. “TRS 1” is a trail running shoe with a replaceable outsole. This lets users personalise their own trail running shoes. The inner shoe can be changed to adapt to colder or warmer temperatures or even for washing when needed. An added advantage is that certain parts of the shoe can be easily repaired or replaced when worn or damaged. ECAL Milano 2019: ECAL x Marsotto Lab

ECAL Milano 2019: ECAL x Marsotto Lab,09–14.04.2019,Corso Garibaldi 50 In partnership with the Italian marble manufacturer Marsotto LAB, ECAL Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship students present a series of home accessories devised during a workshop with French designer Pierre Charpin. HD Images Brochure with explanations The Italian marble manufacturer that entrusted the project development to ECAL Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship with a clock collection for last year s Milan Design Week, chose to repeat the collaboration to create home accessories for this year s edition. Marsotto LAB, the new laboratory of the family business founded in 2018 for which the students had worked before, gives talented young aspiring designers an opportunity to present simple yet functional objects while learning about the specific properties of marble, namely its weight, hardness and aesthetics. A tour of the factory in the outskirts of Verona provided the students with a unique opportunity to discover the Marsotto manufacturing plant as well as the leading-edge machines that enable them to optimise production while maintaining the level of handcrafted quality to which the Marsotto brand has been equating for six generations now. After their trip, the students were able to develop their ideas alongside Pierre Charpin, the French designer who shared with them his enthusiasm for perfect and well-balanced shapes. The result is an original and surprising collection of kitchenware (a champagne bucket, containers, trays and other accessories) vases and incense burners, all these objects form a fresh yet useful range that aims to complement the marble furniture collections created by renowned designers for Marsotto edizioni, a brand that has been internationally successful for a number of years. ECAL Milano 2019: Sound & Vision

ECAL Milano 2019: Sound & Vision,09–14.04.2019,Spazio Orso 16, Milano On the occasion of the “Sound & Vision” exhibition, ECAL and the design research centre EPFL+ECAL Lab awaken your senses through a range of immersive experiences, from surprising ringing bells to audiovisual music recordings. ECAL showcases “Ring my Bell”, an offbeat collection of interactive doorbells, while the EPFL+ECAL Lab unleashes the potential of Virtual Reality with “Hands on Vision”. DONG! TRRRRRR! Or maybe even GLING! Or BLING!, MHHHH! And sometimes even BRAOUM! ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents an offbeat collection of interactive doorbells developed by first-year Bachelor Industrial Design students, under the joint guidance of Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard, Head of Bachelor Industrial Design, and Mathieu Rivier, a Bachelor Media & Interaction Design graduate. This project is part of the “Sound & Vision” exhibition, shown for the first time, in collaboration with EPFL+ECAL Lab, at the 2019 Milan International Furniture Fair. Sound and object design are two notions that industrial designers rarely have the opportunity to combine. Nevertheless, most everyday objects potentially produce sounds. Just pull up a chair, open or close a drawer or even flip a switch and you will create sound. What do all these actions have in common? Movement, friction and interaction which draw on the basic laws of physics to create tones. With this in mind, the students have offered a fresh and original take on an everyday object, one that is unremarkable yet never silent—the doorbell. They have designed a range of mechanical and electrical doorbells that offer a unique, sometimes even thunderous, sound experience. Well-known chimes step aside and are replaced by a curious metallophone triggered by a punch card reminiscent of traditional mechanical music boxes. The former door knocker is now amplified by a vibrant dong! The familiar buzzer has been replaced by an energetic drum roll. The everyday doorbell has been replaced by a curious device that makes a sound like thunder. At last, where you might expect a ding-dong, there is now a stertorous mooing mhhhh! These are just some of the contraptions displayed. Come in and ring! Hands on Vision In the “Sound & Vision” exhibition, the EPFL+ECAL Lab takes you to others worlds with “Hands on Vision”. The immersion turns into a sensory, social and nomadic experience. The design research shapes a new future for immersion and mobility. Six installations demonstrate how objects bring new life to virtual content, – in the company of celebrities such as singer, Nina Simone, and designer, Roger Tallon. ECAL & EXECAL Residences at La Becque Event
ECAL & EXECAL Residences at La Becque

ECAL & EXECAL Residences at La Becque,20.03.2019,La Becque, La Tour-de-Peilz UPDATE (20.03.19) EXECAL Residence at La Becque – Announcement of the laureates. UPDATE (20.03.19) EXECAL Residence at La Becque – Announcement of the laureates ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne is delighted to announce the laureates of the first EXECAL Residences at La Becque I Artists Residency. This initiative, part of the partnership that binds the two institutions, aims at fostering research projects and promoting excellence in art and design education. Each will be granted with a month-long residency program, between July and September 2019, with the objective to develop a project connected to their practices but also to the thematic focus of La Becque, the exploration of the intersection of nature and technology. Therefore, the jury composed of Catherine Othenin-Girard (President, EXECAL –Association des anciens étudiants et des amis de l ECAL), Luc Meier (Director, La Becque) and Alexis Georgacopoulos (Director, ECAL) selected: Aladin Borioli (BA Photography) Since 2014, Aladin Borioli has pursued his DYI research project "Apian", looking at the links between honeybees and humans, and at how both beings mould each other. Being drawn closer to the humanities, Aladin graduated in 2018 with an MA in Visual and Media Anthropology at the Freie Universität Berlin. "Apian" has been then presented in artistic contexts as well as in anthropological forms. Pauline Lemberger & Iris Andreadis (BA Industrial Design) In 2015, Pauline Lemberger co-founded “Bouchée Double”, in Brussels, a studio where she explores the culinary world at the intersection of scenography, photography, product design and illustration. She investigates cuisine through a global approach, enhanced during residencies in Japan and Mexico but also through the conceptualization of pop-up restaurants. For her part, Iris Andreadis is currently studying architecture in Paris. At the heart of her practice lays her deep fascination for building processes and structures, as well as for smart objects and their economy of means, all of which she had the chance to observe during stays in Greece and Hong Kong. Thomas Grogan (BA Industrial Design) With a background in industrial and speculative design, Thomas Grogan, based in London, has developed an artistic practice that investigates current and future social issues around emerging technologies through various artistic outputs like sculpture, installation, animation and digital platform. His work uses a visual language that is strongly influenced by corporate branding, manufacturing and product hacking. The first joint venture between the artist residency and an art and design school, the ECAL x La Becque initiative aims at fostering research projects and promoting excellence in art and design education. Therefore, during summer 2019, the EXECAL Residence at La Becque will offer three ECAL alumni the opportunity to each participate in a four-week residency, exploring the intersection of nature and technology, La Becque s lead thematic orientation, while benefiting from the unique infrastructure that the residency has to offer. Regardless of the discipline it is developed in, the residency project will later be integrated into a digital catalogue showcasing the EXECAL Residences at La Becque. The call for applications is open to all ECAL alumni from all disciplines having graduated at least three years before the beginning of the residency programs at La Becque in summer 2019. The call for applications for the EXECAL Residence at La Becque is now closed. The selected 2019 residents will be informed in February 2019. ECAL presents Loucia Carlier à Artgenève Event
ECAL presents Loucia Carlier à Artgenève

ECAL presents Loucia Carlier à Artgenève,31.01–03.02.2019,Palexpo, Geneva From 31 January to 3 February at artgenève, ECAL presents an exhibition and a magazine cofounded by Loucia Carlier, a graduate of the Bachelor (2015) and Master (2017) Fine Arts programmes. “This piece of wall is invisible, if one ignores the large fresco that takes place there. A large quantity of images and symbols are penciled, printed and embossed in it. They crossover each other, like in a medieval version of the library in Interstellar, where references to SF, since its inception, encounter various folklore traditions. The rust-colored ship, a vessel, a spacecraft, floats in the middle of the Magonia, like a suffering craft that has become a weird receptacle for phantasmagorical journeys. In the smaller formats, living rooms elements stand out, deserted by their tenants. Absurdly apocalyptic visions emerge as a backdrop.” Klima is a print magazine which gives a voice to creative, singular and conscious individuals by relating art, activism and academia. ECAL book – 2018 Project
ECAL book – 2018

ECAL book – 2018 To be a filmmaker in 2018 is to be a bit of a spiritualist. The rarefaction of the film object, humble, palpable, which weighs in the hand, is a fact. Its historical place of diffusion, the theatre, is also disappearing in Europe. Even DVDs and USB keys are relics of yesterday s world. Modern computers don t care about the ports where these objects could drop anchor. There is hardly any material trace of the cinematographic creation anymore. Some data stored on a cloud on the other side of the world, wind in a cloud. The filmmaker s job is therefore to produce the invisible for nomadic souls, not to say wandering souls, in a bus in Tokyo or a café in Denver. It is to speak to the spirits. There is no nostalgia in this observation of the times, just the desire to adapt to the Zeitgeist. At ECAL, we love objects. Like Georges Perec, who was "all about the language that surrounds things, about what s underneath, about everything that feeds them, about everything that s injected into them. Because it is a language, the cinema is matter. It agglomerates what we are, we the creators, we the spectators, in a communion of thought. To testify to this encounter, an object was needed. And the most beautiful of all: a book. To say what nourishes us, but also what we give to eat. The encounters, the essays, the filming, the trips, the debates that make up the living and vibrant body of our school. The one that asks the only question that matters: for whom are we doing what? May this book be the Ouija board that allows us to communicate with the spirits, here and elsewhere, today and tomorrow. Many thanks to Rachel Noël, coordinator of the ECAL s Cinema Department, initiator and curator of this first volume. And to all the contributors. Lionel Baier / Head of the Film Department

ECAL at the Rencontres d'Arles Event
ECAL at the Rencontres d'Arles

ECAL at the Rencontres d Arles,02–08.07.2018,Arles On July 2nd 2018, ECAL s second year Bachelor photography students presented their "guerrilla communication" project at the opening of Rencontres d Arles. Under the direction of Olivier Cablat (artist, teacher and artistic director of Cosmos Arles Books) and Milo Keller (head of the Photography Department at ECAL), the 2nd year Bachelor students analysed and diverged modes of communication and diffusion for one semester. Both physical and digital strategies have been developed for the field work in Arles: from wild posting, to live webcam, from propaganda to social networks. During the opening week of the festival, the students transformed a 55 m² room of the Cosmos Arles Books into an editorial office, exhibition and work space. This project between installation and caricature, aims to augment our relationship to our society of spectacle, where the speed of dissemination of information sometimes makes the true and false indistinguishable. A newspaper of 250 copies will be printed daily as a physical witness of this experience at multiple media levels. Inauguration: Monday 2 July 2018 at 18h00 Opening hours: free admission from Tuesday 3rd to Saturday 8th from 12h00 to 20h00 https://www.rencontres-arles.com

Aesop x ECAL Event
Aesop x ECAL

Aesop x ECAL,21.06–15.07.2018,Aesop Oberdorfstrasse, Zurich An exhibition of projects by ECAL Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship students in collaboration with Aesop. From 21 June (opening reception from 6.30pm) to 15 July, Aesop Oberdorfstrasse, Zurich. The skincare, haircare and body products specialist Aesop chose ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne to design two accessories for its brand : an electric essential oil burner and a washbag. In doing so, Aesop clearly showed it cared for smart and sustainable design. After an in-depth presentation and a visit to the three Aesop shops in Zurich, 17 ECAL graduate students from the MAS in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship started working under the leadership of professor and designer Tomas Kral. At the end of the workshop, a jury made up of some of the brand executives – among them Mandy Cupper, Head of Product, who had made the trip from Melbourne especially – selected some twenty projects that explored materials as varied as wood, cork, natural resins, ceramic, hand-blown glass and textile. In addition to an aesthetic and innovating design, the students brief included sustainability. Through working prototypes, students imagined projects such as a neoprene washbag inspired from the surfing world or a pocket-size foldable washbag, an essential oil burner producing steam reminiscent of Japanese mountains and a completely transparent oil burner revealing its fan blades and its usual bottle of essential oils. All the other projects also have their own distinctive world in which our bodies and minds are invited to travel through our senses of sight, smell and touch. Exhibition from 22 June until 15 July 2018 Opening Reception: Thursday 21 June, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm Opening hours: Monday - Friday 10am - 7pm, Saturday 10am - 6pm. ECAL x QWSTION in Lausanne Event
ECAL x QWSTION in Lausanne

ECAL x QWSTION in Lausanne,21–30.06.2018,QWSTION Store, Lausanne A joint project between Swiss bag brand QWSTION and ECAL students of the Master Product Design programme, exploring ways of carrying and using the new sustainable and lightweight material CottonShell®. Ten prototypes have been selected for display at QWSTION Lausanne from 22 to 30 June. Cocktail will be held on 21 June from 5pm. Images HD In the project led by Christian Paul Kaegi, Swiss Designer and Creative Director at QWSTION, the sustainably produced CottonShell® was the starting point for an extensive research. CottonShell® has so far been used for clothing only and its unique construction makes it wa-ter-resistant without the use of any coating. Questioning the norm, using straightforward materials and integrating functionality in effortless ways are the core brand values of QWSTION which completed the brief. «A good answer is the result of the right question. I think it s a really important part of studying to keep questioning the status quo, of society, technology and their relation.» mentions Christian Paul Kaegi. The student s engagement with both the QWSTION brand as well as the new material resulted in interesting new ideas and concepts going beyond the ordinary: a scarf with hidden pockets aims to challenge airline staff, a new method of protecting contents inspired by bubblewrap makes for minimal carry, and a backpack with integrated rain coat tackles unpleasant weather surprises. After previously being presented at Vienna Design Week the projects developed by the students will be exhibited in the hometown of ECAL, in Lausanne. From the 22nd to the 30th of June the ten prototypes can be experienced at Rue du Tunnel 7, in the future QWSTION Store which will officially open mid August. Opening Hours: Monday – Friday 10 – 7 pm Saturday 10 – 5 pm QWSTION Lausanne Rue du Tunnel 7 1005 Lausanne www.qwstion.com
