8 ECAL graduates won Swiss Design Awards 2018 Big success for ECAL during the Swiss Design Awards 2018 ceremony at Art Basel with 8 graduates awarded on a total of 17 winners. ECAL also had 20 graduates amongst the 50 finalists. Regarding the Swiss Art Awards 2018, ECAL graduates won 2 important prizes. Congratulations as well to Sylvie Fleury and Thomas Hirschhorn, ECAL lecturers, who won the Swiss Art «Grand Prix»/Meret Oppenheim Award. ECAL Digital Market In partnership with the 3D printing company Formlabs, ECAL Master Product Design students present a range of innovative everyday life objects, produced through a print farm within the exhibition and sold directly on site. Projects from ECAL faculty and alumni are also available. The concept was imagined by Camille Blin, head of the Master Product Design, and Christophe Guberan, ECAL tutor. ECAL has turned Spazio Orso 16, a 17th century Milanese palazzo, into a contemporary production site and retail shop inspired by a new vision of digital manufacturing. Lately, most of the product design research into 3D printing has been focusing on new technologies and the shapes they can generate. The idea of this project is to present digital manufacturing as an industrial production tool thanks to a print farm composed of numerous machines printing the same pieces simultaneously. “ECAL Digital Market” offers functional and well-designed everyday objects, created by Master Product Design students as well as by a selection of ECAL-related designers (faculty members and alumni). The project looks into the possibilities of production on demand. It examines the changing environment of manufacturing processes, it emphasizes how fast and transparent today s design industry could become, and experiments with new design details that are too intricate to achieve with traditional manufacturing techniques. Finally, “ECAL Digital Market” highlights the role of the designer in this new production cycle. Thanks to the 3D printers and know-how provided by Formlabs, a large variety of objects such as combs, tape dispensers, mechanical pencils, shoehorns, coat hooks, scissors, spinning tops, shelves and many more are produced and sold on site by the students. ECAL Conference: Jonas Lindstroem,06.06.2018,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL ECAL Conference: Jonas Lindstroem – Photographer and Director, London and Berlin ECAL Lectures (June 2018) Jonas Lindstroem, Photographer & Director, London & Berlin Wednesday 6 June at 6pm, IKEA Auditorium, ECAL Jonas Lindstroem is a photographer and director of German and Swedish descent, hailing from a small town in Germany. His love for skateboarding as an adolescent inspired his first steps as a photographer, in which he documented his peers and their aesthetics. After finishing high school, Lindstroem moved to Berlin at the age of 19 to study Visual Communication at the University of the Arts. During his studies, he was selected to study at the London College of Communications for a year abroad. Lindstroem started his professional career within the broad context of fashion photography and has developed his directorial and filmmaking work increasingly over the years, balancing editorial, commercial, and personal artistic projects like his 15-minute short film Truth or Dare which documents the narratives sourced from the imaginary minds of a global generation. Lindstroem s vision has been proposed through his work for clients like 032c Magazine, Kenzo, Nike, YSL, Fendi and Louis Vuitton, as well as through his global campaigns for Uniqlo U and Hermès. Jeudi 24 mai 2018, 18h Auditoire IKEA, ECAL Beatrice Trueblood Designer et directrice des publications, Mexico City Née en 1938 en Lettonie, Beatrice Trueblood est engagée en 1966 par le Comité d Organisation des JO de Mexico en tant que Directrice des publications, à la tête d une équipe internationale de 250 personnes. Elle co-crée avec Eduardo Terrazas l identité visuelle du programme Mexico 68. De 1972 à 1975, elle est Directrice des publications du Comité Olympique mexicain, puis de l Université autonome métropolitaine de Mexico. En 1976, elle fonde sa propre société, où elle édite des livres d art sur la culture mexicaine. Eduardo Terrazas Designer, architecte et artiste, Mexico City Né en 1936 au Mexique, Eduardo Terrazas est designer, architecte, muséographe, urbaniste et artiste. Nommé Directeur du programme Urban Design par le Comité d Organisation des JO de Mexico, il est le co-concepteur du logotype et des éléments de l identité visuelle de Mexico 68. Après les Jeux, il poursuit sa carrière pluridisciplinaire et participe à de nombreux projets pour son pays et sur la scène internationale. HD Images Brochure with explanations Picasso, Giacometti, ECAL. Some projects sometimes give rise to what may first seem to be unlikely associations. In this case, it turned out for the best. The Musée national Picasso-Paris challenged ECAL to create new seats, at once practical and discreet and yet with distinctive character, for the exhibition areas. We rose to the challenge. In order to best respond to the visitors needs, ECAL commissioned a group of nine students and graduates to carry out a study on the seats of fifty museums or so in Europe (Germany, England, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland). Inspired by this survey, 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design students worked with materials of their choice under the guidance of designer and professor Chris Kabel. Isabelle Baudraz s ‘Tie bench was selected from the projects put forward before being assessed in situ to make sure it blended with the architecture of the museum and the works of the Spanish genius. The benches were finally produced by the outdoor furniture company Tectona. All the project participants worked in a concerted manner and the project was a great success. Picasso and Giacometti can definitely sit easy. ECAL x Marsotto Lab,17–22.04.2018,Spazio Bigli, Milan In partnership with the Italian marble furniture manufacturer Marsotto Lab, ECAL Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship students present a series of table and wall clocks, created following a workshop led by Jaime Hayon. HD Images Brochure with explanations Further to the growing success of the Marsotto Edizioni collections, which are collaborations with today s major designers, the Italian marble specialist launched Marsotto Lab. This new platform will enable the work of young and promising designers as well as that of students from art and design schools to be produced. The family business entrusted ECAL, and more specifically its Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship students, with the Marsotto Lab s first edition. The students were given the opportunity to highlight the material properties while working on table and wall clocks. During their visit to the manufacture near Verona, the students discovered the impressive production plant, which has been recently optimised with the acquisition of new, cutting-edge equipment. With an experience in marble handed down from generation to generation, as a company, Marsotto excels at combining technology and artisans know-how to design ever more innovating and contemporary pieces. Following their trip, the students were given the opportunity to develop their ideas with the Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, who wished to share his inspiration and his very forward-looking vision of design. This creative exchange resulted in the development of several clock projects. The students were asked to work on new ideas for lamps, starting from concepts of portable light and mobility, imagining how light can accompany our movements through space. Foscarini has supported the ECAL students throughout the design process: from the understanding of the brief to intermediate reviews, all the way to interventions to address problematic issues and stimulate alternative solutions. Nine lamps creating nine different moods were finally selected, each with its own features related to its shape and aesthetics as well as to the use of distinctive materials, ranging from cast aluminum to silk, including wood or ripstop nylon. ECAL Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship exhibition at The Mass, Tokyo,24.03–22.04.2018,The Mass, Tokyo At The Mass gallery s invitation, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne is presenting a selection of Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship student projects. Founded in 2016 by Masayuki Nishimoto, the gallery welcomes the exhibition in the three sculpturally designed rooms that give the Tokyo minimalist architect Nobuo Araki s building its distinctive character. The exhibition is organised around three themes (Fine Tableware, Swiss Craftsmanship and Fashion Accessories) and it highlights some of the many collaborations undertaken with Swiss brands from the fields of luxury and craftsmanship. In addition to the exhibited prototypes, a selection of mock-ups and sketches illustrates the students creative process. ECAL Conference: Peter Saville,19.03.2018,IKEA Auditorium, ECAL ECAL Conference: Peter Saville – Artist and designer, London Conférences ECAL (mars 2018) Peter Saville, Artiste et designer, Londres Lundi 19 mars à 18h, auditoire IKEA, ECAL Né en 1955, Peter Saville est un artiste et designer dont la contribution à la culture a été unique. En tant que fondateur et directeur artistique du légendaire label indépendant britannique Factory Records, il a touché le grand public grâce aux séries de pochettes de disques qu il a créées pour Joy Division et New Order entre 1979 et 1993. Son style radical a cassé toutes les règles, en omettant sciemment les informations sur les artistes ou les titres, tout en questionnant les modes de consommation et de communication. Ses projets récents mêlent design, art et culture. Ces dernières années, il a ainsi occupé le poste de Creative Director auprès de Manchester, sa ville d origine. Ses réalisations ont également été célébrées entre autres au Design Museum à Londres, au Migros Museum à Zurich et partout dans le monde, où il continue toujours d exposer. Depuis les années 1990, il croise l improvisation musicale et l usage physique du son, au moyen de guitares préparées, d oscillateurs de fréquences et de lecteur de bandes magnétiques. Pour ce lancement du projet de recherche sur l auralité à l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, Drumm offre la possibilité d expérimenter le son comme un matériel riche, tangible et manipulable à souhait. ECAL x QWSTION in Zurich,08.03–07.04.2018,QWSTION Store Zurich A joint project between Swiss bag brand QWSTION and ECAL students of the Master Product Design programme, exploring ways of carrying and using the new sustainable and lightweight material CottonShell®. Ten prototypes have been selected for display at QWSTION Zurich from 8 March to 7 April 2018. IMD and ECAL launch partnership,29.01.2018,IMD & ECAL Two of the Vaud region s leading academic institutions join forces to deliver programs on business and design IMD and ECAL, the University of Art and Design Lausanne, have established a partnership agreement and are currently working together on a series of joint initiatives. The two leading academic institutions recently jointly delivered a three-day program on Foundations of Business at IMD for students undertaking ECAL s MAS in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship. The program focused on the major facets of branding and the creation of products and companies. Several other joint initiatives with IMD and ECAL are planned for the current and upcoming semesters. The current line-up of joint programs includes: Foundations of Business This three-day program is led by IMD Professors and is destined for students in ECAL s MAS in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship. Through practical exercises it focuses on familiarizing students with the creation of products and companies as well as the many facets of branding. Coaching IMD Professors provide personalized coaching, advising ECAL students on business projects the students undertake as part of their diploma and with a view to kick-start their careers. MBA Innovation Lab From 23 to 28 April, ECAL students and participants in the IMD MBA program work together on the Debiopharm Inartis Challenge, a competition organized to harness innovation and tackle a societal challenge: to improve the lives of healthcare patients. During the week, the IMD and ECAL students will explore the processes of creating new ideas, insight-gathering, prototyping and pitching. Orchestrating Winning Performance (OWP) On the occasion of IMD s signature program, Orchestrating Winning Performance from 25 to 29 June 2018, several graduates from ECAL will participate in discussions in the design thinking stream led by Cyril Bouquet and will focus on what business can learn from the art world. Professor Cyril Bouquet leads IMD s participation in the partnership and focuses on teaching innovation and design thinking notably in the MBA innovation Lab. Professor Stéphane J.G. Girod delivers teaching on the luxury industry and Prof. Professor Peter Vogel shares his expertise in entrepreneurship and start-ups. Other focuses include business model strategy, marketing and sustainability. Nicolas Le Moigne is in charge of the MAS in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship at ECAL. ECAL – Ten Years in Renens,06.12.2017–16.02.2018,Gallery l elac To celebrate the 10th year anniversary of its arrival in its new building in Renens, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents an exhibition of the best projects created during this period by students from all fields of studies. Under the impulse of Pierre Keller (director from 1995 to 2011), ECAL took up residence in Renens in 2007 in the former premises of the IRIL factory, a building renovated by the Franco-Swiss architect Bernard Tschumi and the Fehlmann office in Morges. Ten years later, ECAL presents an exhibition of the best projects created during this period, emblematic of the various disciplines taught between its walls (Art Direction, Fine Arts, Cinema, Industrial and Product Design, Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship, Graphic Design, Media & Interaction Design, Photography, Type Design). Alexis Georgacopoulos, Director of ECAL, and Heads of all Departments have selected nearly 300 projects from the harvest of a rich decade (1456 diplomas, 310 exhibitions, 655 awards, 100 collaborations), staged in a structure shaped as an X, imagined by Adrien Rovero and Béatrice Durandard, both graduates of the Bachelor Industrial Design. This is the perfect opportunity to see works that have contributed to the reputation of ECAL and perpetuated its international renown (5th Dezeen Hot List published late 2016, ranking the best schools of art and architecture in the world). The exhibition offers the opportunity to (re)discover among others: "Delirious Home", featuring a series of objects in a playful interpretation of the "smart home" concept (Award for the best show at the Milan Furniture Fair 2014). A wide selection of films including, award-winning films of the Locarno Film Festival. In 2005, Patterson completed his first project, Sound Affects, a collection of color photographs that explore Memphis utilizing light and color as visual analogues to sound and music. In 2008, a Sound Affects monograph was published by Edition Kaune, Sudendorf (Cologne). His second monograph Redheaded Peckerwood was published by MACK in 2011 and was named one of the best books of the year by numerous noted international photography critics, nominated for the 2012 Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards and won the prestigious 2012 Recontres d Arles Author Book Award. The book appeared in The Photobook: A History, Volume 3, co-edited by Gerry Badger and Martin Parr. In 2013, Patterson was awarded a 2013 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship, or Guggenheim Fellowship. In 2015, he won the Grand Prix Images Vevey 2015/2016. Each attending student registers for one workshop only. Both Cecilia Bengolea and Karl Holmqvist find themselves in shifting positions, moving alongside the art scene, towards the space of the stage, between writing practices, language, poetry, visual forms, film, and sound. The workshops will take place outside of the art school, in a location suited to host both practices, at the Arsenic – Centre d art scénique contemporain, the theatre located in the city centre of Lausanne. --- Cecilia Bengolea Workshop statement I would like to share a practice of dance and writing. The ancestors of Bolivia, the Argentine cumbia street dances and Jamaican dancehall as well as automatic writing. The work on breathing, on hyperventilation as practiced in these dances interest me particularly in order to then write and think about other rhythms and speeds. Biography Born in Buenos Aires, Cecilia Bengolea was trained in urban dances and studied anthropological dance with Eugenio Barba before graduating in philosophy and art history from the University of Buenos Aires. In 2001, she moved to Paris and attended the Ex.e.r.c.e. course in Montpeller, directed by Mathilde Monnier. In 2011, Cecilia Bengolea co-directed two short films which were in dialogue with Levi-Strauss s work : Tristes Tropiques : La Beauté (tôt) vouée à se défaire with Donatien Veisman and Cri de Pilaga with Juliette Bineau. Cecilia Bengolea performs dance like animated sculpture, with the possibility of becoming object and subject in the same instance. She regularly collaborates with artists such as Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Monika Gintersdorfer and Knut Klassen, as well as with dancehall specialists Damion BG Dancerz et Joan Mendy. In collaboration with the British artist Jeremy Deller, Cecilia Bengolea has also co-directed the films RythmAssPoetry and Bombom s Dream. I wanted to invoke it however with the sense that there s something beneath the surface, behind the noise or what artist James Benning has stated as artists being people “who are able to look at the world around them”, the notion that art making is in fact part of processing this act of looking or “listening”. Part of “deepening” it. Proposing a workshop at ecal about the use of language in art, as spoken word or graphic design. As meaning carrier or a type of flashing picture largely part of today s urban landscape. Also about memory function, “brain washing” techniques and repetition. How things can stay perfectly clear in one s memory and yet also change over time or even right there in the moment. Biography Karl Holmqvist is an artist living and working in Berlin. The main focus of his artistic practice is on language and includes writing in the form of artist s books, in video animations and room size installations as well as in spoken word performances. His writing is mostly made up of quotations from a variety of sources rearranged in the form of a type of written collage that deals with repetition, double meaning and memory function. Recent one-person exhibitions include Centre d Art Contemporain, Geneva, Indipendenza, Rome (with Klara Liden), Kunstverein Braunschweig (with Klara Liden), Power Station, Dallas and Camden Arts Centre, London. He has participated in the Venice Biennial in 2003 and 2011, and Performa, New York in 2005, 2007 and 2013. Touche-à-tout de génie, diplômé de la Rhode Island School of Design, passionné de peinture et de musique, il s affirme dès ses débuts comme un digne hériter de la Beat Generation avec des films tels que Drugstore Cowboy ou My Own Private Idaho. Il rencontre ensuite le succès auprès du grand public avec Prête à tout, Will Hunting (Oscar du meilleur scénario pour Ben Affleck et Matt Damon) et A la rencontre de Forrester. En 2003, il connaît la consécration en recevant la Palme d or au Festival de Cannes pour Elephant. Depuis, il a notamment réalisé Harvey Milk, pour lequel il sera nommé à l Oscar du meilleur réalisateur, et des films à la veine plus indépendante comme Last Days ou Paranoid Park. ECAL x QWSTION at the Vienna Design Week,29.09–08.10.2017,QWSTION Store, Vienna A joint project between Swiss bag brand QWSTION and ECAL students of the Master Product Design programme, exploring ways of carrying and using the new sustainable and lightweight material CottonShell®. Ten prototypes have been selected for display at Vienna Design Week from 29 September to 8 October. Cocktail will be held on 4 October, 6-9pm. Images HD In the project led by Christian Paul Kaegi, Swiss Designer and Creative Director at QWSTION, the sustainably produced CottonShell® was the starting point for an extensive research. CottonShell® has so far been used for clothing only and its unique construction makes it water-resistant without the use of any coating. Questioning the norm, using straightforward materials and integrating functionality in effortless ways are the core brand values of QWSTION which completed the brief. The students engagement with both the QWSTION brand as well as the new material resulted in interesting new ideas and concepts going beyond the ordinary: a scarf with hidden pockets aims to challenge airline staff, a new method of protecting contents inspired by bubblewrap makes for minimal carry and a backpack with integrated rain coat tackles unpleasant weather surprises. GLASSWORKS x ECAL at TRESOR Contemporary Craft,21–24.09.2017,Messe Basel Matteo Gonet (Glassworks) and ECAL have teamed in order to design and produce a glass chandelier. The project was directed by London-based designer Bethan Laura Wood and involved the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship of ECAL. At the end of a workshop, "Goethe", the project created by a group of four students (Savvas Laz, Maximilian Maertens, Mauro Martinho, Enrico Pietra), was selected and produced into a working prototype by the Münchenstein-based glassblower. From the colorful universe of sweets, these students focused on the creation of a wide variety of pieces to illustrate the different techniques that only glassblowers can master. The tubular forms interlockwith a metal structure to create a unique installation, such as a contemporary chandelier, resulting in a perfect celebration of student s creativity and craftsmanship. «ECAL Graphic Design» at swissnex San Francisco,16.06–25.08.2017,swissnex San Francisco In collaboration with swissnex San Francisco, ECAL presents an exhibition of projects created by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction. Images HD ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of – amongst others – graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Edited by the Gavillet & Rust studio, the book revolves around a long succession of tracking shots in which projects are not classified in categories, but organised by colour. ECAL x QWSTION A joint project between Swiss bag brand QWSTION and ECAL students of the Master Product Design programme, exploring ways of carrying and using the new sustainable and lightweight material CottonShell®. In the project led by Christian Paul Kaegi, Swiss Designer and Creative Director at QWSTION, the sustainably produced CottonShell® was the starting point for an extensive research. CottonShell® has so far been used for clothing only and its unique construction makes it wa-ter-resistant without the use of any coating. Questioning the norm, using straightforward materials and integrating functionality in effortless ways are the core brand values of QWSTION which completed the brief. «A good answer is the result of the right question. I think it s a really important part of studying to keep questioning the status quo, of society, technology and their relation.» mentions Christian Paul Kaegi. The student s engagement with both the QWSTION brand as well as the new material resulted in interesting new ideas and concepts going beyond the ordinary: a scarf with hidden pockets aims to challenge airline staff, a new method of protecting contents inspired by bubblewrap makes for minimal carry, and a backpack with integrated rain coat tackles unpleasant weather surprises. De là, elle voit Marie, sa grande sœur, et Eloi, son futur mari, arriver pour passer le week-end en famille.
