Shadia and Saphira

pauline amacker – Shadia and Saphira

This atlas describes the relationship between two Métis sisters who lived in Switzerland and then in Cameroon after their parent's divorce. They haven't seen each other for 5 years as the eldest came back in Switzerland. They kept in touch through Facebook messages and looking at them points out a cultural gap. Shadia and Saphira's duet was forged through separation and their striking resemblance leads to confusion. They are proud of their dual identity but saddened to be rejected in both countries. My aim is to discuss physical distance within the family and question cultural barriers.

DRIVE For this week’s theme, “Drive,” first-year photography students were asked to create a portrait shot on medium-format film. Inspired by the sensation of a first driving experience, travel, empowerment, or discovery, the week aimed to explore the relationship between one or more people and a vehicle.
