The prolific designer is the focus of this exhibition hosted by ECAL and the Sainte-Croix Museum of Mechanical Art and Heritage.

Long overlooked, Richard Authier (1925–2018) is considered one of the pioneers of industrial design in French-speaking Switzerland. Trained as a draftsman, technician, and engineer, he joined Paillard in 1947, a company founded in Sainte-Croix and a flagship of northern Vaud’s industry with a global reputation. Shortly thereafter, he won an internal competition for new products organized by the radio department. This event marked the beginning of a design career spanning more than forty years.

His career trajectory reflects the entire evolution of products manufactured in the region: first mechanical, then electrical, electronic, and finally computer-based. Authier designed Hermes typewriters, Paillard radios, Bolex cameras and accessories, as well as Thorens record players. Beginning in the 1970s, he also contributed to the development of the first computer systems at Hermes Precisa International, designing computers, printers, and complete workstations.

A versatile designer, Authier also creates store windows, exhibition booths, scenography, and numerous graphic designs. By placing functionality at the heart of his approach, he has helped shape the identities of brands that have carried the region’s expertise throughout the world. His body of work now stands as an exceptional testament to the transformation of industry, from precision engineering to the early days of computing.

Conducted by ECAL/Lausanne Cantonal Art School (HES-SO) between 2024 and 2025, a research project based on the study of Authier’s personal archives and several institutional collections, notably those of MuMAPS, made it possible to trace his career, identify numerous creations, and shed light on his creative approach. The results of this research are presented in the book Richard Authier, designer. Une carrière chez Paillard, 1947–1988, published in 2026 by ECAL and Triest Verlag (Zurich). This exhibition builds on that work by bringing together objects, drawings, and documents that bear witness to Authier’s remarkable contribution to the history of design and regional industry.
