ECAL at Paris Photo 2019: Brutal 003,07–09.11.2019,Au Roi, Paris To celebrate the Paris Photo 2019 edition, the Bachelor Photography students of ECAL, under the artistic direction of Nicolas Poillot, translated the music of the producer IKAZ BOI into images. The visuals, sometimes smooth and neat, sometimes dark and rough, were produced by listening to the new project BRUTAL 3: an intimate album oscillating between romance and darkness composed with instrumental tracks only. Exclusively, 500 unpublished and numbered vinyl copies were created especially for this occasion. For two days, ECAL invests the Au Roi gallery, inviting spectators to a sound and visual journey, in an ephemeral sensory space generated by a synchronous video installation. Pierre Keller: 1945-2019,08.07.2019,ECAL, Renens It is with great sadness that ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne announces the passing of Pierre Keller, its director between 1995 and 2011. “We do everything seriously, without ever taking ourselves seriously.” This was Pierre Keller s maxim when he worked at ECAL, and it allowed him to move a small school in the Canton of Vaud up the ranks of Schools of Art and Design worldwide to become a member of the global elite. A native son of Gilly, Pierre Keller graduated as a graphic designer in 1965 from what was then the Ecole des beaux-arts et arts appliqués in Lausanne (now ECAL), and, while working as a teacher, won fame as an artist, photographer, and representative of the Council of State of Vaud in the organisation of the 700th anniversary of the Swiss nation. In 1995, he returned to ECAL, this time through the front door, and became its new director. For more than 16 years, he moulded ECAL in his own image – one that was vibrant, original and creative. He tackled all manner of challenges and headed up a number of major projects which all contributed to placing the school on the world stage. Pierre Keller has mounted exhibitions in all four corners of the world, forged countless partnerships with leading brands and institutions and was the brains behind the iconic ECAL building that has stood in Renens since 2007 which he, in partnership with his architect friend Bernard Tschumi, designed throughout. He also strove, at all times, to ensure that his students received the very best. While he has won widespread recognition (Prix de Lausanne, the French Ordre des palmes académiques, the Design Prize Switzerland, and has been invited to deliver guest lectures at institutions such as EPFL in Lausanne and the Tecnológico de Monterrey), his greatest source of pride was clearly the opportunity he enjoyed to help hundreds of young artists and designers to fulfil their potential. For all these things, ECAL would like to say to you, Pierre, a big THANK YOU!

ECAL at Lausanne Jardins 2019,15.06–12.10.2019,Lausanne From 15 June to 12 October at Lausanne Jardins 2019, discover some thirty gardens, including three projects created by ECAL Product Design Master students following a workshop with the Dutch designer Wieki Somers. The three projects presented on the Terrasse de Bellefontaine are: Le Point (Timothée Mion, Fabien Roy, Leonardo Vianello): Perched atop the roof of a car park above the level of the street, The Bellefontaine terrace is inconspicuous and little-used. To attract the attention and incite passers-by to discover this hidden garden, a sail unfolds every time the car park s air vent is activated, like a landmark up in the sky. The blast that comes from the bowels of the earth propels the piece of fabric that twirls around in the wind. Air is the invisible link between all the layers of this place and Le Point makes it visible. The Nocturnal Garden (Jeffery Lambert, Lorenz Noelle, Mathilde Lafaille): Sculptures during the day, stage directors at night: a series of lampshades bring the Bellefontaine terrace to life as night falls. They transform the park, diverting the rays of existing lights onto natural elements for a new experience of the garden. Each reflector creates little scenes with a dramatic interplay between light and nature that varies according to the wind and the rain. Entrance (Samuel Lodetti, Benjamin Bichsel, Jingxiang Zhang): There is something fascinating about gazing into water. Through the transparency of this element, hidden worlds appear and one can get lost in their infinity. Entrance plays on this fascination. Thanks to an optical effect, the park is connected to the various levels of the car park. The small fountain transforms into a bottomless abyss of stratified storeys, and visitors are invited to dive into this endless world. https://lausannejardins.ch/en/

ECAL Milano 2019: Objects for Nomadic Life by ECAL/Sebastian Maluska,09–14.04.2019,SaloneSatellite, Rho Sebastian Maluska, ECAL Master Product Design graduate (2018), presents three outdoor projects related to a nomadic lifestyle, including camping and travelling. HD Images “Nest” is a low-profile car volume extension, acting as a tent and storage space. Inspired by the sailing world and its technology, it is made up of two frames covered with waterproof sailing fabric. Once it opens up, “Nest” provides sheltered sleeping space for two people. While driving, sport equipment, such as surfboards or skis, can be stored on top or inside of “Nest” between the two fabric layers. Modern mountaineers travel as fast and light as possible, trying out new routes and pushing the boundaries of distance and time. They are never assured of being able to make it home before dark or of getting to the next safe spot before the weather changes. Naturally, a backup option becomes an essential part of your kit. This backup comes in the shape of an “Odon” backpack, essentially a hyper-light shelter solution. This shelter is so light that it can always remain attached to your daypack. “TRS 1” is a trail running shoe with a replaceable outsole. This lets users personalise their own trail running shoes. The inner shoe can be changed to adapt to colder or warmer temperatures or even for washing when needed. An added advantage is that certain parts of the shoe can be easily repaired or replaced when worn or damaged. ECAL Milano 2019: ECAL x Marsotto Lab,09–14.04.2019,Corso Garibaldi 50 In partnership with the Italian marble manufacturer Marsotto LAB, ECAL Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship students present a series of home accessories devised during a workshop with French designer Pierre Charpin. HD Images Brochure with explanations The Italian marble manufacturer that entrusted the project development to ECAL Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship with a clock collection for last year s Milan Design Week, chose to repeat the collaboration to create home accessories for this year s edition. Marsotto LAB, the new laboratory of the family business founded in 2018 for which the students had worked before, gives talented young aspiring designers an opportunity to present simple yet functional objects while learning about the specific properties of marble, namely its weight, hardness and aesthetics. A tour of the factory in the outskirts of Verona provided the students with a unique opportunity to discover the Marsotto manufacturing plant as well as the leading-edge machines that enable them to optimise production while maintaining the level of handcrafted quality to which the Marsotto brand has been equating for six generations now. After their trip, the students were able to develop their ideas alongside Pierre Charpin, the French designer who shared with them his enthusiasm for perfect and well-balanced shapes. The result is an original and surprising collection of kitchenware (a champagne bucket, containers, trays and other accessories) vases and incense burners, all these objects form a fresh yet useful range that aims to complement the marble furniture collections created by renowned designers for Marsotto edizioni, a brand that has been internationally successful for a number of years. Opening hours: Tuesday 9 April & Sunday 14 April, 10 am – 5 pm Wednesday 10 April – Saturday 13 April, 10 am – 8.30 pm Corso Garibaldi 50 20121 Milano www.ecal.ch www.lab.marsotto.com

ECAL Milano 2019: Sound & Vision,09–14.04.2019,Spazio Orso 16, Milano On the occasion of the “Sound & Vision” exhibition, ECAL and the design research centre EPFL+ECAL Lab awaken your senses through a range of immersive experiences, from surprising ringing bells to audiovisual music recordings. ECAL showcases “Ring my Bell”, an offbeat collection of interactive doorbells, while the EPFL+ECAL Lab unleashes the potential of Virtual Reality with “Hands on Vision”. Ring my Bell www.ecal-ringmybell.ch HD Images Brochure with explanations Video on vimeo DONG! TRRRRRR! Or maybe even GLING! Or BLING!, MHHHH! And sometimes even BRAOUM! ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents an offbeat collection of interactive doorbells developed by first-year Bachelor Industrial Design students, under the joint guidance of Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard, Head of Bachelor Industrial Design, and Mathieu Rivier, a Bachelor Media & Interaction Design graduate. This project is part of the “Sound & Vision” exhibition, shown for the first time, in collaboration with EPFL+ECAL Lab, at the 2019 Milan International Furniture Fair. Sound and object design are two notions that industrial designers rarely have the opportunity to combine. Nevertheless, most everyday objects potentially produce sounds. Just pull up a chair, open or close a drawer or even flip a switch and you will create sound. What do all these actions have in common? Movement, friction and interaction which draw on the basic laws of physics to create tones. With this in mind, the students have offered a fresh and original take on an everyday object, one that is unremarkable yet never silent—the doorbell. They have designed a range of mechanical and electrical doorbells that offer a unique, sometimes even thunderous, sound experience. Well-known chimes step aside and are replaced by a curious metallophone triggered by a punch card reminiscent of traditional mechanical music boxes. The former door knocker is now amplified by a vibrant dong! The familiar buzzer has been replaced by an energetic drum roll. The everyday doorbell has been replaced by a curious device that makes a sound like thunder. At last, where you might expect a ding-dong, there is now a stertorous mooing mhhhh! These are just some of the contraptions displayed. Come in and ring! Hands on Vision In the “Sound & Vision” exhibition, the EPFL+ECAL Lab takes you to others worlds with “Hands on Vision”. The immersion turns into a sensory, social and nomadic experience. The design research shapes a new future for immersion and mobility. Six installations demonstrate how objects bring new life to virtual content, – in the company of celebrities such as singer, Nina Simone, and designer, Roger Tallon. Satisfaction 2019 Satisfying webtoys coded by 1st year Bachelor students in Media & Interaction Design as part of a week-long workshop given by Mario von Rickenbach.

Die Nacktwanderer When I saw a nudist beach for the first time last summer, I immediately knew that I had to deal with this group nudity in my diploma. “Naked hiking” is a modern split-off from which even primal naturists take distance; nudity in public provokes. Nudity and Nature have always been big subjects in art. Inspired by the romantic paintings I was hunting for photographs which feature this tension between romantic nature and disturbing contemporary elements – an opposition between nature and culture. When I saw a nudist beach for the first time last summer, I immediately knew that I had to deal with this group nudity in my diploma.

Zufall??? Schicksal!!!,17.09–17.10.2025,Gallery l elac A Bit of School, A Bit of Snow, And It Derails... claims that art is more than just another subject taught at school. The exhibition deliberately breaks with spatial balance, avoiding a central theme or linear path. With no clear beginning or end, it invites movement, wandering, and uncertain navigation. Unlike immersive formats, the layout creates an unstable space — one that encourages reflection. Through a selection of diverse works and approaches — from artists of different generations, ECAL graduates, Swiss and international — the exhibition offers landmarks within a timeless process. These artistic positions spark doubt, raise questions, and create disorientation. Our stance? Affirming negation. Can one say “I love art” or “I hate art” — especially as an artist? And within the very context of an art school? Coincidence??? Fate!!! Documentary film workshop with Alessandro Comodin The 2025 documentary film workshop for 2nd year students was lead by french italian director Alessandro Comodin. Head of workshop: "This year, there s been a lot of talk about pebbles on tiles and eggs dangerously stuffed into jeans pockets. The pebbles, I confess, were me, Alessandro Comodin, a forty-something Italian director, who had thrown them at the windows of my new apprentice filmmakers. It was my mission, or so I interpreted it. Yes, I was the one who threw those pebbles, because I ve always enjoyed being disturbed by a friend who might have dropped by unexpectedly, because he or she didn t know what better to do than to come to my house. So, as so often with the gifts we give, it s the ones we d like to receive, I took the liberty of getting young people off their sofas and into the dark and magical world of documentaries. Or that they might simply open the windows without fear. The eggs, on the other hand, were the students projects. The image of the egg may be banal, but it s been a nutritional staple since long before the happy experience of Noah s Ark, and not to displease vegans or allergy sufferers, because eggs were never to be eaten or broken, just put in your pocket and kept there. A highly perilous exercise, but you can t be a filmmaker s apprentice without an acute awareness of the passage of time and the fragility of appearances. Let me conclude with a quote from Julio Cortazar. In 1980, he was invited to give a series of lectures to students at Berkeley. At one point he said that an idea is like a bird that sneaks in through the window; you never know when it s going to fly in, and it s not easy to catch it. I would add that you still need to have your windows open. We ve learned that this year, that it s really nice to open your windows a little bit every day, even at night, because a bird might come in or a friend might throw a pebble in, and you never know when that pebble might turn into an egg." Documentary film workshop with Benoit Rossel The 2025 documentary film workshop for 1st year students was lead by french swiss director Benoit Rossel. Head of workshop: "Since it s always ghosts that are presented on screen in a film, I suggested to the 1st year students in the Cinema section that they make a film in which they would have the project of resurrecting a disappeared person or thing of their choice. Cinema, through the properties of the medium, would certainly have the capacity to bring it back to life." On the first year of their Master degree, students embark on a “Grand Voyage” to discover the region and a filmmaker. In 2025, they went to Romania. For three weeks, the students conceived, directed and edited 10 films in collaboration with film students from Transylvania s capital, Cluj-Napoca. They were supervised by director and scriptwriter Radu Jude, and collaborated with the Theatre and Film Faculty of Babeș-Bolyai University.

Direction workshop with Patric Chiha In partnership with La Manufacture, the Cinema Dapartment invited austrian director Patric Chiha for a direction workshop destined to 3rd year students. Head of workshop: "The deepest thing about man is his skin. Although it s not its subject, this beautiful phrase by Paul Valéry speaks to me of the essence of cinema: we only film surfaces and nothing else. During the workshop, I d like to work with the students from ECAL and La Manufacture on a series of screen tests, essays, shots... a bit like what you d do during a casting. For me, a casting is not a moment of verification or testing, but of research and encounter. What can directors and actors do together? Where does this first meeting lead us? How do we approach and film the other? How can we avoid trapping them in a preconceived image, and instead liberate their multiple identities? I don t believe in directing actors, except that perhaps, in an encounter, we direct each other. I believe much more in the tools of cinema - the camera, the light, the music... - as an invitation to play, to surprise, to emotion. Over the five days of the workshop, we ll use a series of improvisations, filmed in natural or artificial light, with or without words, trusting in the mysteries of faces, the pace of bodies and the rhythms of gestures - in everything that may at first seem superficial - and without resorting to scripts, to try to reach emotions." Patric Chiha, director

Screen Design 2024 Websites developed over a semester according to a book chosen by the students as part of Harry Bloch s Screen Design course, second year Bachelor of Visual Communication. Le Vieux qui lisait des romans d amour An interpretation of the novel by Chilean author Luis Sepúlveda, this site immerses you in the small Amazonian town of El Idilio. The experience invites you to live the hunt led by Antonio José Bolívar, in search of a Tigrillo that has killed a man. by Nyria Graber, Carolina Crivelli The Consolations of the Forest An interpretation of Sylvain Tesson s story, this website explores the experience of solitude and withdrawal from the world in a cabin on the shores of Lake Baikal. The students worked around the notion of time passing and the repetition of daily gestures, translating the slowness, contemplation and cyclical rhythm of life in isolation. by Yann Müller, Maeva Chanson The Suitcase Interpretation of Sergei Dovlatov s book, in which the main character rediscovers the suitcase with which he left the USSR. The site explores the idea of interstices: openings through which the objects in the suitcase emerge, but also spaces where forbidden Soviet alternative culture came to life. by Jonathan Vögele, Simeon Dubuis
