If you re not willing to humiliate yourself, make mistakes and downright fuck up, you should consider working in a cubicle farm. It s safer there. Because as a creative person, you ll be called an idiot at least once a day. That s okay. Making mistakes and risking embarrassment, even failure, is how you make progress. Without it, you ll be stuck in the same old safe zone: not embarrassed, but not better either. In other words: boring. So if we want to do this thing we love – making stuff – we mustn t be afraid of looking stupid. In this workshop and exhibition I stretched the abilities of 2nd year ECAL Bachelor Photography students to the limit. By embarrassing themselves they are able to tell a personal, often awkward and risky story. This gives them an opportunity to explore an area of photography which they would probably not have dared to touch.”  Erik Kessels

It’s not quite the Hilton Project
It’s not quite the Hilton

Tom Zambaz – It s not quite the Hilton It s not quite the Hilton is a fashion film created for fashion designer Jonathan Ageneau s diploma collection in which he imagined the hacker community s changing room. The film refers to the “whistleblower” figure, presenting characters trapped in a blank space experiencing paranoia and boredom at the same time. Through its webcam, the user can interact with the film all along. This prolific collaboration was a great opportunity to design two distinct projects feeding off our exchanges throughout the project.

Postgram Project
Postgram

Sebastian Vargas – Postgram Postgram is my personal automated online bot dedicated to the practice of “fair hacking”. Using an @post.gram instagram account, each time a photo is published, the bot uses geolocalisation data to seek someone living close by, using a public directory. Once someone has been found, he/she is automatically added as a new contact in my phone and is sent a printed postcard of the image. New contacts are notified of the postcard with a suggestion to meet and film the encounter. Postgram counterposes public data and image making, using a process of “fair hacking” of public services.

NIFFF Feature Presentation Project
NIFFF Feature Presentation

Océan Bussard – NIFFF Feature Presentation NIFFF Feature Presentation is a series of animated posters promoting the NIFFF (Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival). Halfway between a poster and a video, this project reinterprets the codes of fantasy cinema with tools related to graphic design. Horror, gore and the intriguing are the themes covered in this hybrid work between cinema and graphics. This project allowed me to expand my practice of graphic design closer to the work of a film-maker by planning sequences with storyboards, experimenting with video editing – all of that through the prism of graphic design. ECAL Appartement 50, Cité Radieuse Event
ECAL Appartement 50, Cité Radieuse

ECAL Appartement 50, Cité Radieuse,04–19.07.2015,Cité Radieuse, Marseille In September 2014, twelve Master Product Design students of ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne were invited to reflect on a collection of objects to meet everyday needs in the Cité Radieuse in Marseille. The outcome of this research is being displayed as part of an exhibition staged in Apartment 50 from 4 to 19 July 2015. A 52-page publication produced by the Art Direction Master students will be issued concurrently. HD PICTURES Apartment 50 was restored by two enthusiasts, Jean-Marc Drut and Patrick Blauwart, as close as possible to its original condition. Listed as a historical monument, the venue occasionally hosts exhibition projects. World-renowned designers have already exhibited there, such as Jasper Morrison, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic and Pierre Charpin. Thus, under the direction of Thilo Alex Brunner, head of the Master Product Design at ECAL, and of ECAL professor Augustin Scott de Martinville, a series of objects was produced over one semester by the Product Design Master students. The project began in September 2014 with a three-day workshop in the Cité Radieuse, allowing students to experience life in the building. Based on their various observations, they created objects to “inhabit” Apartment 50, focusing particularly on the following features: The specific climate of the apartments: the fan creates an air flow on the mezzanine and the cushions are designed to fit both on the living room s indoor parapets and on the loggias tables. The flexibility of interior spaces: the large rotating lamp serves to light either the dining room or the living room in turn, while the small model can be used either on a desk or a bedside table. Tours of Apartment 50 which take place regularly: the carpet, crafted with the support of the Ruckstuhl AG manufacture in Langenthal, displays a map showing how the Cité Radieuse blended in with its environment at the time of construction, while the “unit” metre provides a simple tool to explain the Modulor system. Life in the communal areas, especially the roof terrace which serves as a meeting place: the chair and folding table are designed to facilitate migration from the living room of the apartment, while the picnic box allows to comfortably carry everything you for an aperitif. In addition to the projects around the above-mentioned specificities, half a dozen other objects can be discovered on the spot or in the related publication. In March 2015, the students of the ECAL Master Art Direction were invited to attend a four-day workshop to experience and document everyday life in the building with a view to editing a publication. Through the architectural spectrum across 52 pages, this editorial project includes portraits of residents or fictional characters inspired by the Modulor system, as well as still lifes and original typefaces echoing the building s proportions. Shadia and Saphira

pauline amacker – Shadia and Saphira This atlas describes the relationship between two Métis sisters who lived in Switzerland and then in Cameroon after their parent s divorce. They haven t seen each other for 5 years as the eldest came back in Switzerland. They kept in touch through Facebook messages and looking at them points out a cultural gap. Shadia and Saphira s duet was forged through separation and their striking resemblance leads to confusion. They are proud of their dual identity but saddened to be rejected in both countries. My aim is to discuss physical distance within the family and question cultural barriers. Diplomas – 2015 Project
Diplomas – 2015

Diplomas – 2015 Jérôme Wilfredo Baccaglio ,  Logos for Drones and Such... I created a catalogue for drone logos. It gathers a heterogenous iconography (invented, drawn, found) whose every motif is available for purchase as a canvas, a tattoo, a drawing or a sticker. This is an oblique strategy adopted to talk about the interpretation of an image (as the spectator, or as the artist, to assign it a meaning, a name); the versus created by hand-made work and a digital image; mercantilism; the matter of copyright and its role in an information-infested era. Tina Braegger,   Fasanenstrasse 30 I made an architectural model of white cardboard, placed on four white metal legs. I decorated the model with white curtains that flow over the model down to the floor. Inside the model, I put old toys of mine, objects that originally belong to a doll s house. By attaching the legs directly to the model, it looks like a table. I wanted to create something surreal, like a dream; the objects inside the model are slightly too big, and the model bleeds off as the curtains overflow. Jérôme Wilfredo Baccaglio, Logos for Drones and Such... Appartement 50 Cité Radieuse Project
Appartement 50 Cité Radieuse

Appartement 50 Cité Radieuse Apartment 50 was restored by two enthusiasts, Jean-Marc Drut and Patrick Blauwart, as close as possible to its original condition. Exhibition Life is a Bed of Roses (un roman) Project
Exhibition Life is a Bed of Roses (un roman)

Exhibition Life is a Bed of Roses (un roman) From Wednesday, May 27, 2015 to Saturday, July 4, 2015. A project devised by  Stéphanie Moisdon , with the participation of the Master s course students and teachers. In the form of a  Bildingsroman  (“education novel”) about imagination, or about imagination of education, the exhibition is the venue for a theatre and a choir,  a set, and appearances of forms, objects and characters. The evolving path of this “education novel” has been gradually formed, over a whole year, around an Alain Resnais film, and the unfurled memory of Comte Forbek s castle, in the spirit of mediaeval times, the spirit of craftsmen of all times. For several pens to write this light and modern tale of youth, it was important to rely on a few oblique strategies, and travel between experience and immaturity, talent and craft, between personal predispositions and collective ideal. Workshops led by  Valentin Carron , Sylvie Fleury , Tristan Garcia , Stéphane Kropf , Fabian Marti , in collaboration with  Lucile Dupraz . Scenography realized by Denis Savary with Ruben Valdez , and opening credits video by  Lisa Stein . With works by  Jérôme Baccaglio, Tina Braegger, Lena Brudieux, Francesco Cagnin, Lucas Erin, Jean Etchevers-Bourgois, Arthur Fouray, Antoine Goudard, Thea Govorchin, Emanuele Marcuccio, Francesco Nazardo, Giulio Scalisi, Tomaso Semenzato, Konstantinos Sotiriou, Lisa Stein, and Linda Voorwinde . "Life is a Bed of Roses (un roman)" exhibition Event
"Life is a Bed of Roses (un roman)" exhibition

Avec: Jérôme Baccaglio, Tina Braegger, Lena Brudieux, Francesco Cagnin, Lucas Erin, Jean Etchevers-Bourgois, Arthur Fouray, Antoine Goudard, Thea Govorchin, Julien Gremaud, Emanuele Marcuccio, Francesco Nardozzi, Giulio Scalisi, Tomaso Semenzato, Konstantinos Sotiriou, Lisa Stein, Linda Voorwinde. Collaboration with Christofle – 2015 Project
Collaboration with Christofle – 2015

Collaboration with Christofle – 2015 ECAL lays the table   For this fifth collaboration between ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne and the Maison Christofle, the students of the Master of Advanced Studies have taken the challenge to dive straight into the heart of silversmithing history by creating a set of cutlery. This particularly demanding project required a perfect mastery of proportions, ergonomy and detail refinement. During a four weeks workshop, led by the Slovakian born and Lausanne based designer Tomas Kral, the 12 students of the programme have individually created their concepts. Within the variety of proposals, 6 projects were selected for further development and the production of prototypes. This second phase enabled the students to further refine the details, while constantly verifying the precision of the forms trough 3D printed resin mock-ups. Thanks to cutting edge technologies - in particular 3D printing in metal - and the expertise of Christofle s centuries old craftsmanship, 6 sets of forks, knives and spoons were produced in a record timeframe, while ensuring the outstanding quality of the manual finishing.Dipping Rodrigo Caula Inspired by the Christofle manufacture visit and especially by the process of silver coating, this project creates the illusion of a raw core hidden in the inner of the cutlery. During the process, the pieces are submerged in a silver bath while being held on its tips. The chiseled core which reveals the raw and textured appearance, seems to be covered and smoothened by a film applied to the rest of the piece. Frisson Alexis Tourron For this project, the point of departure was an abstentious and pure form, while the handles were subtilely transformed. Inspired by the movement and waves on the surface of the water, this series of cutlery comes to life through its refined aesthetics and the reflections on the polished metallic surface. Posata Stefano Panterotto This project bridges the gap between tradition and modernity with its forms inspired by the gestures and the handling of the cutlery. The details like bevels, cuts or marks become subtile decorations and enrich the pieces with a refined and contemporary character. Collerette Ophélie Sanga Just as the Renaissance costumes, the ruff decorates the edges of this cutlery set. Reminding us of gathered fabric, the wavy surface creates a dynamic play of reflections, referencing at the same time the past and the present, resulting in a highly contemporary piece. Etang d Or Kaja Solgaard Dahl This project was largely inspired by the lakeside landscape at dusk. The base of the cutlery was hollowed out and the resulting indentation was then plated with a golden reflecting finish. The erosion of the volume leads to a pronounced contrast between perfection and imperfection. Point de Paris Annie Tung Anchored in the French cultural patrimony, the laced fabric creates a direct association to the environment of the table. All the pieces of cutlery seem to be wrapped by a fine broidery in order to perfectly match to the fabric of the tablecloth and the napkins. The pieces manage to be at the same time feminine, delicate and classic while maintaining a contemporary impression due to their minimalistic formal language.

ECAL-Typefaces.ch Event
ECAL-Typefaces.ch

ECAL-Typefaces.ch,30.04.2015,Harpe 45, Lausanne ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne launches an online foundry in association with Swiss Typefaces, allowing to acquire fonts realized by the students in Bachelor Graphic Design and in Master Art Direction. A premiere for a school! www.ecal-typefaces.ch With this website created in collaboration with Swiss Typefaces, ECAL is probably the first university in the world to have launched an online type foundry, allowing direct access for anyone to a selection of typefaces, all designed by students. Thanks to renowned professors such as François Rappo, Aurèle Sack, Ian Party, Gilles Gavillet and Ludovic Balland, and prestigious visiting lecturers such as Frederik Berlaen, Kai Bernau, Peter Bilak, Laurenz Brunner, Christian Schwartz, Paul Barnes and Emmanuel Rey, ECAL has been able to boast a solid reputation in Type Design teaching for several years. Fonts designed by students during the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses (or for the diploma) are regularly used for ECAL corporate communications (posters, invitations cards, catalogues...), and because of this usage, people often ask to us how to acquire these typefaces, in particular our Headline Fonts. This website is here to answer those requests. ECAL is proud to be able to share these fonts with the largest possible audience and to offer a platform for our students, deserving heirs of a typically Swiss know-how.

#Photobooth Project
#Photobooth

#Photobooth The ECAL students of the Bachelor Photography and Master Product Design present a series of interactive installations showing how mobile phone cameras and the selfie phenomenon changed the way we look at ourselves. How can one create objects and installations around the portrait theme in this digital age? What means are available to disseminate these? How can one make visitors interact with the exhibits and turn viewers into the main actors in the exhibition? Over a semester, 1st year Master Product Design students and 2nd year Bachelor Photography students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne worked on these issues with the aim to present their findings as part of an exhibition. Under the watchful eye of Vincent Jacquier, Head of the Visual Communication Department, of designer Camille Blin and photographer Nicolas Haeni, the students were able to understand, using various approaches, how current – material or virtual – technology alters our traditional relationship with portraits, be they selfies or pictures of others. Using modern media as well as more run-of-the-mill devices, exhibition visitors are invited to directly experiment the processes imagined by the students, allowing them to discover new interactive and fun ways of having their picture taken 3.0 style. Based on this principle, the exhibition stages an installation playing with the visitor s shadow; the combination of a mirror and scanner to create realistic or distorted self-portraits; an image which is altered through song; a tribute to famous departed designers through a system of filters placed in front of a smartphone; analogically merged faces; a 180° portrait produced by a range of reflective surfaces; a trompe-l œil projection on a mask; a family of objects able to hijack the smartphone camera function to create original images; a poetic reinterpretation Instagram; and finally, self-portraits captured by the photo itself. Exposition "Arts & Crafts & Design" with Vacheron Constantin Event
Exposition "Arts & Crafts & Design" with Vacheron Constantin

Exposition "Arts & Crafts & Design" with Vacheron Constantin,14.04.2015 Vacheron Constantin presents the “ Arts & Crafts & Design : Time according to ECAL and Swiss Craftsmen” exhibition, produced in partnership with ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne (University of Art and Design Lausanne) and the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d Arte at the Swiss Pavilion at Expo Milan 2015, (the Universal Exhibition to be hosted by Milan) and of which a preview will be launched during the Milan Furniture Fair. This is an innovative approach combining contemporary creation and arts and crafts, and entirely dedicated to knowledge transfer. The Manufacture Vacheron Constantin is delighted to share its passion and its philosophy in its capacity as partner to the Swiss Pavilion at Expo Milan 2015. This prestigious event represents a magnificent opportunity for exchanges as well as a unique showcase for the expertise and crafts of the participating countries. Expo Milan 2015 will take place in Italy from May 1st to October 31st 2015 and is particularly relevant in view of the history of the Manufacture: in 1819, François Constantin, during a voyage to Italy, first enounced the working principle that is now the company motto: “Do better if possible, and that is always possible…” The exhibition presented in Milan is the fruit of a joint project bringing together ECAL, the prestigious university of art and design with an international reputation, the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d Arte, an institution known for its commitment to the sustainability of the artistic crafts, and the Manufacture Vacheron Constantin. Since 2013, Vacheron Constantin has partnered the ECAL s Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship, a unique training course for the various creative arts professions related to the world of luxury. This is an opportunity for students to make a contribution each year to conducting a concrete project, in partnership with the Manufacture. This original approach links contemporary creation to ancestral know-how. Within the framework of this project, ECAL and Vacheron Constantin have asked 12 students to combine their creativity with that of experienced craftsmen in order to produce unique objects and demonstrate the richness, the variety, as well as the relevance to contemporary creation of these artisanal crafts. Under the leadership of Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin (Studio Formafantasma) these 12 “duos” have worked on the same theme, Time, and more precisely the cyclical time of the seasons, using materials as diverse as paper and glass.
