Consécration de l ECAL lors du palmarès des «Plus beaux livres suisses 2013» Le palmarès du concours des «Plus beaux livres suisses» organisé par l Office fédéral de la culture (OFC) est une véritable consécration pour le Bachelor Design Graphique et le Master Art Direction de l ECAL, puisque onze professeurs et neuf diplômés de l ECAL ont été primés. Deux livres réalisés par l ECAL ont également été récompensés: «Atrocity Exhibition Archive Paradoxe: Déambulations dans La Foire aux atrocités» et «30 Years of Swiss Typographic Discourse in the Typografische Monatsblätter. Exhibition «Ring Bell Twice» by John M Armleder,06–28.03.2014,Gallery l elac, Renens Du 7 mars au 4 avril 2014 à la Galerie l elac, l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne est très heureuse de présenter «Ring Bell Twice», une exposition de John M Armleder. Le mardi 11 mars à 18h dans le Studio Cinéma de l ECAL, le plasticien genevois fera également des performances inédites avec le musicien et artiste suisse Christian Marclay. Sous l impulsion de Stéphane Kropf (responsable du Bachelor Arts Visuels), John M Armleder a produit de nouvelles peintures directement dans la Galerie l elac (après une exposition organisée dans cet espace en tant qu artiste en 2003 et une autre en tant que curateur en 2007). Cette installation célèbre la transition entre le professorat de John M Armleder à l ECAL (initié par Pierre Keller en 1995) et de futures collaborations entre l ECAL et l artiste genevois. D ailleurs, en tant qu enseignant et plasticien, John M Armleder a influencé de nombreux jeunes talents issus de l ECAL, dont Valentin Carron, Philippe Decrauzat, Cyprien Gaillard ou encore David Hominal. Outre une grande pièce murale constituée de plusieurs Puddle Paintings et de rideaux disco, l exposition comporte une série de diptyques qui confronte les différentes approches de John M Armleder à la peinture sur toile, qu elle soit géométrique, en gouttes ou coulée. Au sol, des tas de matériaux de construction et d artefacts culturels tentent de créer un liant négligé à l exposition, dans un joyeux questionnement sur l utile et le futile, la précision et l organique, la fonctionnalité et le déchet. Collaboration with Rémy Martin Under the supervision of designer Tomas Kral, the students worked on the theme of mixology (the association of materials, just like the mixed ingredients that make up a cocktail) and developed in a few weeks various projects, focused either on objects related to a recipe or on ritual. For the launch of this project with Rémy Martin, we had the chance to spend two days in Cognac to discover the secrets of the production process and the cellars of the House, through numerous tastings, and then to immerse ourselves in the trendy Parisian world of cocktail bars by testing numerous recipes. In the end, 10 objects were designed by the 10 students from the programme. Nomad Rachel Suming My project is inspired by the street vendors that can be found all over the world. The current gastronomic trend is towards foodtrucks and street food revisited. Applied to the Rémy Martin universe, I imagined a tray in the house colours, which would invite a mobile, younger and more contemporary approach to cognac. The idea of "mix" is found in the use of the object which allows the preparation of a VSOP cognac cocktail prepared in front of you and at the minute. But it also lies in the mix of the house s identity codes with a more contemporary use: the oak and copper tray, echoing the cognac cask in the Rémy Martin cellars, can be slipped over the shoulders thanks to leather straps, like a travelling salesman, to move around in the evening and help prepare cocktails. Cocktail Carrier Samuel Williams Cocktail Carrier is inspired by the traditional milk carrier basket. This project interprets the idea of "mix" by marrying the world of cognac with that of cocktails to be shared. Rémy Martin VSOP cognac becomes synonymous with conviviality by bringing friends together around a set of eight glasses and a cognac cocktail carafe. This object is mainly made of copper-plated steel, with two different finishes (polished and brushed). Keeping a copper look was an opportunity for me to revisit the traditional materials of cognac making and give it a more contemporary and premium touch. Crystal shaker Anouk Meier My project is a fusion between a vintage spirit bottle and a shaker, bringing together crystal and copper for their classic and luxurious look. During a party, the bartender can prepare the cocktail directly in this container, whose parts of the upper part take up exactly the codes and functions of the traditional shaker (stopper and strainer). Once the drink is finished, the cut glass base is brought directly to the table and the drink served in the glasses. Totem Hongchao Wang The Totem project stems from the desire to optimise and ritualise the cocktail service. The base, made of transparent glass, contains the ready-made drink. One "tier" above, a metal container is used as a container for ice. This piece, whose base is made of cork, functions as a cork to hermetically seal the carafe. The glasses are stacked in a small cavity in the ice bowl and remain easily accessible. The whole thing is then connected to a leather handle, which makes it easy (one-handed) and safe to carry. The combination of these shapes and materials creates a very sculptural and surprising object, similar to tribal totems, with animal heads stacked on top of each other.

One minute repeater On the occasion of the 24th edition of the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH), which took place in Geneva from 20th to 24th January 2014, the ECAL/ University of Art & Design Lausanne created, for watchmaker Vacheron Constantin, a special installation named “The Minute Repeater”. This installation is the result of a research work directed at ECAL by Vincent Jacquier, Head of Visual Communication Department, and Alain Bellet, Head of Bachelor Media & Interaction Design. This research, which brings together students from both Bachelor in Media & Interaction Design and Industrial Design, permitted to develop a stand for the watchmaker based in Geneva. Not less than 12 screens reveal the oneiric sense of the Calibre 1731 of Vacheron Constantin. Thank to the animations unveiled on each screen by the magic of magnifying glasses, ECAL proposes its interpretation of this minute repeater movement, known to be the flattest on the market. Workshop "One painting, one scene" Félix Vallotton retrospective at the Grand Palais This year s workshop had the particularity of confining us to a single location: the Château de la Sarraz, and of having a relationship - whatever it may be - with the work of Félix Vallotton. The films made in collaboration with the theater students of La Manufacture were sometimes inspired by this and sometimes opposed to it. Two films illustrate these possibilities in their own way. Commentary Meat has its origin in a still life by the painter. The precision of Christophe Saber s text, its restrained actors, its formalist and pictorial cutting, its contrasting light create a film that comes as close as possible to the graphic work of Félix Vallotton s illustrations. Several shots could be part of the series of famous black and white engravings. The film gives the cruel impression that even humor is a blade... splitting the flesh. Collaboration with Hermès – 2014 The collaboration with Hermes allowed the students from the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship to discover the universe of window displays, where supports, lighting and colours need to draw your eye to the objects being showcased. Wang Hongchao Sketches of Animals For this project designed for the French brand Hermès, I have been directly inspired by Pablo Picasso s abstract paintings and sculptures. Sketches of Animals is a collection of window displays, constructed in cherry wood, which highlight the value of Hermès products by using them to bring life to the different animals. A printed plate is then turned into the eye of a fish, cushions become the scales and a crystal glass the extremity of its antenna. This playful and narrative project has been designed for the stores in Zürich and Geneva on the occasion of the Fall/ Winter 2014 collections.

Commentaire Night s Dream is inspired exactly by one of the painter s paintings: pictorially first (frontal staging) and in the choice of characters (two women, one asleep, the other sitting on the same bed). From this silent painting, staging a secret that is not told, he creates a situation of speech, even of vaudeville. Josua Hotz adds a protagonist who will modify the rigid framework of the painting. The characters are embodied in their reality, their fragility (it is the same actress who plays both roles and it is interesting to see the difference in "acting"), and the image, nuanced, moving, takes us into an impressionist world, the opposite of Vallotton s art. Souvenir items for The Olympic Museum,07.01.2014,Olympic Museum, Lausanne To mark the reopening of The Olympic Museum, the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has been working on designing souvenir items for the Museum shop, created by Bachelor of Industrial Design students after a workshop with Hector Serrano, a Spanish designer based in Valencia. Two of these projects are set to go on sale in the Museum shop shortly. HD PICTURES ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos is pleased to present the projects produced by second-year Bachelor of Industrial Design students for The Olympic Museum. In December, The Museum reopened after a makeover that will allow it to offer its visitors new experiences after 20 years of existence. To celebrate this event, The Olympic Museum invited the ECAL to work on a series of souvenir items for its shop. The aim was to create a collection of souvenirs which reflect the spirit of Olympism and The Museum in a contemporary, fun way. Using his experience in this area, Spanish designer Hector Serrano gave the students some tips on what makes a successful souvenir item. The students came up with around 30 proposals, which were submitted to a jury composed of Olympic Museum and IOC employees. Junk Museum This workshop, directed by Thomas Mailaender, was aimed at students in the second year of their Bachelor s degree in Photography. The students were immersed in the art of physically constructing an image and its presentation device. The idea was to broaden their artistic horizons through an awareness of installation, scenography and sculpture. The creative atmosphere of the workshop was enriched by a bold touch, where the singular smell of waste added an unexpected sensory dimension, transforming each creation into a unique exploration. Thomas Mailaender challenged the students to push the boundaries of photographic creativity. The project then took the form of an exhibition in Chavannes-Près-Renens. At the heart of this immersive experience, images were projected, hung, cut and superimposed, giving rise to unique, innovative and immersive works.

Exhibition "ECAL Photography" at ECAL,12.12.2013–15.02.2014,Gallery l elac, Renens From 13 December to 15 February 2014, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents the “ECAL Photography” exhibition in the Gallery l elac at Renens. The exhibition offers a selection of works produced by 58 young talents during their Photography Bachelor curriculum at ECAL. All these images were chosen by exhibition curator Nathalie Herschdorfer, who has developed several internationally acclaimed projects around emerging photography, as well as by Milo Keller, head of the Photography programme at ECAL, and Alexis Georgacopoulos, ECAL director. The scenography of the exhibition is created especially by Swiss designer Adrien Rovero. The “ECAL Photography” book (296 pages, 385 images) supports this event. This book is produced by art publishers Hatje Cantz, with a worldwide reputation for their catalogue of publications on photography. HD Images An art school is an image factory. New generations of artists are constantly emerging, joining the marathon of exhibitions and publications from the very first years of their creative lives. In this context, the art school has become a particularly attractive place for ambitious young artists. Exhibition and book "ECAL Photography",15.11–15.12.2013,Gallery Azzedine Alaïa, Paris From 15 November to 15 December 2013, ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents the “ECAL Photography” exhibition in the gallery of famous fashion designer Azzedine Alaïa in Paris. The exhibition offers a selection of works produced by 58 young talents during their Photography Bachelor curriculum at ECAL. All these images were chosen by exhibition curator Nathalie Herschdorfer, who has developed several internationally acclaimed projects around emerging photography, as well as by Milo Keller, head of the Photography programme at ECAL, and Alexis Georgacopoulos, ECAL director. The scenography of the exhibition is created especially by Swiss designer Adrien Rovero. The “ECAL Photography” book (296 pages, 385 images) supports this event. This book is produced by art publishers Hatje Cantz, with a worldwide reputation for their catalogue of publications on photography. HD Images An art school is an image factory. New generations of artists are constantly emerging, joining the marathon of exhibitions and publications from the very first years of their creative lives. In this context, the art school has become a particularly attractive place for ambitious young artists. This book features a selection of works by photography students from one of the world s top art universities: ECAL, in Lausanne, Switzerland, an institution commited to training artists, graphic designers, industrial designers, typographers, filmmakers, interaction designers, and photographers. Here, students create freely, question the traditional genres, explore new territories, and experiment with and beyond their media. Julien Gremaud – Thatcher is Dead April 8 2013 : Margaret Thatcher passes away at the age of 87, reawakening a collective imagination that had slowly disappeared since the beginning of the 21st century. Juxtaposed in the systemic stream of contemporary images, a large body of images used by the press to recontextualize Thatcher provide a starting point to observe the visual strategies of the media.Thatcher is Dead is a constellation of superimposed photographs ; chance encounters obtained by a digital scanning process identical to that of positive films. Disrupting this system, the hurricanes create a parallel perspective of a new, slower reading of images. The past is neither contested nor revisited, but reactivated by its system of references. Dmitry Bukreev – Varst Varst Having spent the first twenty years of my life in Moscow, I am interested in the relationship between the strong architecture of the 1920 s and the fashion of nowadays. I use the model of Constructivism and update it through the fashion catalogue of an imaginary designer named Varst. Varst is a universe of strict lines and geometric shapes. This catalogue is a combination of 2D graphic shapes – illustrations, collages, typography – which comes alive in volume and takes shape. This project is a work of art direction, styling, and visual experiments. Julien Savioz – Warming by the Devil s Fire Warming by the Devil s Fire recounts the life of Robert Johnson. Considered today as one of the fathers of early Blues Music, he died in fact anonymously in 1938 at the age of 27 and fell into oblivion. It was only during the 60 s that white folk and rock musicians rediscovered his 2 albums and started being interested in his life. In 30 years though, his story had been told so many times and in so many different ways that it had turned into a tale. Theories, white fascination and romantic visions completed the myth, to which – as a European fan – I decided to contribute by telling my own version. "If it s true that every book must have a raison d être , this isn t a book," Marguerite Duras wrote of La vie matérielle , which she published in 1987. Practicalities (La vie matérielle) considers the utopian reach as well as the material bounds pertaining to art produced in the art school s realm. How may a showcase of works by art students be formulated? Can it be an exhibition and function as such? Could one articulate its raison d être anew? This project results from a one-year exchange program initiated by artist Willem de Rooij in collaboration with curator and art critic Stéphanie Moisdon. Conceived by students and recent graduates of the Fine Arts Master directed by Moisdon at ECAL/ Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, Practicalities is the second part of a twofold exhibition program. It echoes and completes Influence at 1m3, whose display introduced to a Lausanne audience works by artists studying under de Rooij s professorship at Städelschule Frankfurt. Ways of making and displaying art vary from one territory to another. As Practicalities stands at a threshold between two localities, it acknowledges the constraints and liberties one experiences here and there as an artist not yet fully concerned with commercial strategies or institutional demands. Océanne Hänni – Watch Out Watch Out is an interactive video clip for iPad. The user is able to cut the screen in different parts which can be modified in real time. He will sometimes notice that the application takes control and forbids him to interact for a moment. This pattern is directly in reference to the lyrics that talk about choices and obligations in life. This work was an opportunity to get involved in a real project working with singer Lila Cruz and to gain experience in filming and creating interactive systems. Océanne Hänni
Charlotte Krieger – Cherry Queen “My short film attempts to articulate the life of my cousin Sabrina between her native United States and Switzerland where she is studying. The film focuses on issues of beauty, fantasy and uprooting. Following Sabrina enabled me to construct a filmic tension between fiction and non-fiction, that emphasizes the game that Sabrina sometimes played with the camera. By establishing an intimate relationship withmy subject, I tried to recreate the transience, the waiting that impregnate her daily life. He sees in Massimo a person willing to listen to his fears and desires. For the first time in his life, Matteo feels ready to open up to someone… Commentaire Desire is a blade that needs sharpening. Matteo, the 17-year-old hero, does not yet hold the knife by the handle, but that does not prevent him from trying to uncover what is lurking in the heart of Don Massimo. Filippo Demarchi films this struggle in the island of a small granite village in Ticino with a scalpel. While the dynamite explosions resound in the surrounding quarries, the camera ventures under Matteo s sheets, in his arms too, with infinite tenderness. In the places of childhood, the director, close to his actors, stretches a fragile thread between two worlds that had given the illusion of being similar and that during the vacations discover themselves to be completely different. Commentaire Melanie s film resembles her and that surely is what attaches me to it in the first place. It s so devious the way movies make you discover who you are, who you thought you weren t and ultimately who you would like to be. Melanie is a discreet and stubborn woman, secretive and proud, shy and intense. It s hard to know where she s taking you, but she holds your hand. Burns tells in its own way the dark side of the love relationship when you are a girl who is not "obvious" and that you would like to love normally, bourgeoisly. The heroine is a princess; she lives in a castle with a pet except that everything is messed up: the dog runs away and the mother says slimy and disgusting things with her mouth. The princess loves a prince, but he is also a mess: he says disgusting things with his slimy mouth, but he kisses so well. The idea for this documentary came to me when I met Stéphane Lambiel. I was moved by the much more humble image of him that he let me see that goes beyond his glimmering branded image. With my little camera in hand, I decided to follow him while he was on tour in Russia and east-europe while remaining in the shadows of the ice rink, in a corner of hotel rooms and cars. Commentaire On the theme of the city, Christophe Saber has filmed a nocturnal huis clos through an eternal fraternal conflict. Kaspar Schiltknecht succeeds, with gentleness and grace, in filming the ages, the states of the body, the desires for freedom and guilt, the beauty and the unattractive, and reveals a young actress with a confounding naturalness who seduces her educator almost in spite of herself. A major component of the project is a publication which works on one hand as a medium to feature the latest fashion collection and to introduce the designer, on the other hand it is an exploration and interpretation of sources of inspiration. It tells the stories behind the collection´s topics and creates a specific mood. This work is a collaboration between a fashion designer and two graphic designers. Basile Mookherjee – My diploma project is a report on Dubaï inhabitants, examined through the lense of cars. Cars occupy an essential place in the lives of people from the United Arab Emirates; cities are stretched over several kilometres, with sixteen lanes highways cutting through the urban fabric, and it is not uncommon that one has to drive several hours daily to go work in another emirate. Cars being free of taxes, the competition to have the the most impressive car is fierce, and even extends to registration plates inscriptions. Cars are a way of showing who you are and what your social status is, but also a seduction tool in a society where it is forbidden to approach a woman directly, and wearing the traditional clothing – dishdash for men, abaya for women – is mandatory. I wanted to document the sudden modernization of the U.A.E, and its consequences on their ancient heritage fed by the nomadic and decorative cultures. There Will Be Blood Sonya Dyakova wanted to do something about conveying music through typography. She have watched recently a Paul Thomas Anderson film ‘There Will Be Blood , and found it very moving and inspiring. The film features an original orchestral score by Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, and she felt the music had integral and powerful role in the film. On day one the students and I watched the film together. Afterwards, I have asked them to create a poster for it. The poster had to embody the essence of the story and ‘weave in the feeling that the sound made. Design is about telling a story, and I wanted to the audience to be able to get the story, or an essential aspect of the story, from looking at the poster. One of the tasks of the designer is to extract essence and communicate it in the most clear voice through tools that we know — typography, colour, image making, printing techniques. All elements of the poster had to have a reason and purpose. She have asked the students to create a list of words, while the film was fresh in their mind, which were reflecting the story. From these words she wanted them to start making visual elements that would make up the poster. She asked the students to use printing press, using wood and metal to create printing plates. Which, in turn, instructed the look of the poster to some degree. The number of layers was limited by the number of students and time they had — any project has constraints, and so did this one. The result was a healthy variety of approaches: some posters were abstract, some more figurative. She tried to push the students not to be afraid of the obvious. Alan Fletcher s words are always in her mind: “What distinguishes designer sheep from designer goats is the ability to stroke a cliché until it purrs like a metaphor”. Prix pour un documentaire à Visions du Réel A l occasion de la 19e édition du Festival international de Cinéma «Visions du Réel» à Nyon, Laurence Favre, diplômée du Master Cinéma ECAL/HEAD, a obtenu pour son film «NWA-MANKAMANA» le «Prix spécial La Mobilière» pour le court métrage le plus innovant de la Compétition internationale Les fragments de texte extraits du journal intime d une missionnaire s entremêlent aux réflexions de la réalisatrice nous donnant ainsi accès à une subjectivité faite des paradoxes du comportement colonial. En voulant filmer et comprendre ce nouveau monde pour s émanciper du sien, le personnage livre un témoignage contradictoire permettant à la réalisatrice de dresser un portrait singulier. ECAL MIlano 2013: "Savoir-Faire",08–14.04.2013,Spazio Orso 16, Milan The “Savoir-Faire” exhibition showcases a selection by ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos, featuring projects in Product and Industrial Design, Art Direction, Photography, Graphic Design and Media & Interaction Design by ECAL Bachelor and Master students. Following a successful experience at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan last year, ECAL offers, for the second time, an exhibition which introduces photography, graphic design, art direction and interaction design amidst “traditional” product & industrial design works. “At ECAL there is no single way to create, although we do take to heart such values as precision, professionalism, innovation – and even humour. Our outmost objective is to develop different skills specific to each programme, but also to integrate this diverse know-how in the cross-disciplinary fashion which has established our school s reputation. With this exhibition we wanted to show that our students “know how” to contribute with passion to each field developed at ECAL”, says ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos.
Low-Tech Factory,21.03–21.04.2013,Hôtel Droog, Amsterdam ECAL presents "Low-Tech Factoy" at the Droog Hotel in Amsterdam. On this occasion, Alexis Georgacopoulos, and Chris Kabel, professor at ECAL, will participate in a debate (April 21 at 7pm) to answer this question: "Why are so many young designers making machines these days?" Low-Tech Factory is a project by ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, Switzerland. In a workshop led by Chris Kabel and Thomas Kral, students from Bachelor in Industrial Design and Master in Product Design created a series of simple but sophisticated machines that not only create an experience, but actually produce finished goods—hats, mirrors, bags, toys, lamps and popcorn. With this project, the theme of auto-production is raised. Recently we have seen countless designers make their own machines. And while it often seems the machine becomes more important than the result, in this case, the design of the machine and its resulting product are in balance. The exhibition presents six machines with videos. At the opening on March 21st, the designers will demonstrate the machines themselves. The question—why are designers making so many machines—still remains. With this question, we will enter into a debate on March 21st with Alexis Georgacopoulos, director of ECAL, Chris Kabel, Joanna van der Zanden and Joris Laarman. The evening will be moderated by Tracy Metz. ----- Students projects "Oncle Sam" by ECAL/Laurent Beirnaert, Pierre Bouvier, Paul Tubiana The "Oncle Sam" machine processes grains one by one, focusing on the transformation of corn into popcorn. An explosion that usually occurs en masse is here isolated so that the spectacle can be enjoyed. Satisfaction is at once visual and gastronomic. "Rocking-Knit" by ECAL/Damien Ludi, Colin Peillex "Rocking-Knit" is a new interpretation of the rocking chair. It offers its user productive moments of relaxation. The to-and-fro movement of this armchair knits hats for the winter and requires no exertion whatsoever. "Stamp" by ECAL/Anaïs Benoit Dignac, Arthur Didier, Edrris Gaaloul "Stamp" is a production line that converts simple plastic trellis into portable lamps. The steps in the manufacturing process are carried out along a rail: the plastic is heated, shaped, and finally crimped over an inexpensive bulb. The result of this ingenious production is a portable lamp complete with a graphic lightweight shade. "Swing" by ECAL/Léonard Golay, Camille Rein "Swing" is a giant punch that transforms pieces of stretch tarpaulin into extendable openwork sacks. The items are produced by the weight of the user who, gyrating, executes a production movement resembling a dance step. "Animal Growth" by ECAL/Eleonora Castellarin, Moises Hernandez Through the use of simple hand tools, this fun worktop breaks down the production process of animal toys manufactured from expanded foam. Cutting, gluing, filling and observing the animals takes shape before your very eyes. "Marbelous" by ECAL/Anurag Etchepareborda, Flora Fixy Using a surface transfer method known as “marbling”, the Marbelous transforms simple objects by coating them with a thin layer of marbled motifs. With a few drops of paint, surprising colour effects are transferred to metallic mirrors, giving your reflection an unexpected impression.

Né en 1957 à Amsterdam, il a emménagé à New York en 1979, où il s est investi au sein de la scène artistique locale au contact d artistes tels que Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring ou Robert Mapplethorpe. Depuis, Ari Marcopoulos est reconnu comme un photographe et un documentariste majeur de la culture contemporaine.
François Rappo, Prix Jan-Tschichold 2013 François Rappo, professeur en Bachelor Communication Visuelle et en Master Art Direction à l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, vient de remporter le prestigieux Prix Jan-Tschichold 2013. Sont également lauréath·e·s pour Les plus beaux livres suisses 2012, trois ancien·ne·s étudiant·e·s (Jonas Berthod, Marietta Eugster et Teo Schifferli), ainsi que plusieurs professeurs à l ECAL (Ludovic Balland, Gilles Gavillet, Winfried Heininger) Prix Jan-Tschichold 2013 En mémoire du typographe Jan-Tschichold, à l initiative à qui nous devons le lancement du concours de l art du livre suisse en 1944, le jury décerne chaque année le prix Jan-Tschichold, dont le·la lauréat·e ne se trouve pas nécessairement parmi les livres candidat·e·s au concours. Depuis 1997, le Département fédéral de l intérieur (DFI) permet ainsi au jury de récompenser une personnalité, un groupe ou une institution dont les réalisations sont remarquables dans le domaine de l art du livre. Les 15 000 francs du Prix Jan-Tschichold vont cette année au typographe et designer graphique François Rappo de Lausanne. François Rappo Né en 1955, François Rappo étudie le design graphique à l ECBA (Ecole cantonale des beaux-arts, Lausanne, classe d art appliqué, 1980) où il se spécialise dans la typographie. Il a créé toute une série de polices de caractères, parmi lesquelles « Didot Elder », « Theinhardt Grotesk », « Genath », « Orso », « Plain Grotesque » (Optimo, fonderie numérique de caractères typographiques). Il a dans son portfolio des projets pour Vogue Hommes International, The New York Times Magazine et ICA Institute of Contemporary Art London. De 2001 à 2007, François Rappo a été le président du jury du concours Les plus beaux livres suisses. Multimodal Publishing The sphere of mass media is deeply transformed by the irruption of network technologies. Thus, the editorial field of magazines faces an increasing phenomenon of fragmentation and differentiation. New editorial projects and new “communities of readers” appear, characterized by an unprecedented and innovative structure of diffusion and reception. These media are a paradox : they are at the same time products of high editorial complexity while being based on a restricted editorial structure. In this context, Multimodal Publishing aims at : developing new forms of magazines able to take part, even to anticipate the changes of the considered media ; characterizing the new design space authorized by this new press magazine mainly influenced by its various actors ; revealing and describing the new competences to be developed in a specific way, for and on behalf of the designers.
