ECAL x Fondation Martin Bodmer - Scripts of the World Event
ECAL x Fondation Martin Bodmer - Scripts of the World

ECAL x Fondation Martin Bodmer - Scripts of the World,24.01–20.03.2022,Fondation Martin Bodmer, Cologny (GE) ECAL / University of Art and Design Lausanne and the Fondation Martin Bodmer have joined forces to celebrate typographic creation and the scripts of the world. ECAL will present original projects in contemporary typography and graphic design, from its Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Type Design programmes, comparing them with Fondation Martin Bodmer s UNESCO listed heritage through a series of lectures, events and workshops on Sunday afternoons on 6 February, 27 February and 20 March 2022. 6 February 2022, 14:00-18:00 The Scripts of Aram: Syriac-Aramaic Typefaces (FR/EN) Registration At the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, the Switzerland and Liechtenstein office of the UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, collaborated with the students of the ECAL Master Type Design on a case: the Syriac script. Historically used to transcribe languages over a vast geographical area, Syriac is today mainly used as the liturgical script of Eastern Christians. Speakers of Modern Aramaic languages live in Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, but compose mainly a worldwide diaspora. While only a few digital fonts exist, providing contemporary and innovative typefaces would contribute to broadening the possibilities for the language to thrive, as well as to cultivate community ties. This day proposes to celebrate Syriac writing and Aramaic culture through the collections of the Martin Bodmer Foundation, typography projects of the ECAL and various reflections on writing, its power, its relationship to politics, language and identity. Conferences 14:30 Politics and type design, Syriac script: a case study (FR) by Matthieu Cortat, head of MA Type Design, ECAL 15:00 About the publication "Aram" (FR) by Elena Baranowski, student MA Type Design, ECAL 15:15 Syriac in the collections of the Fondation Martin Bodmer (FR) by Nicolas Ducimetière, vice-director, Fondation Martin Bodmer 15:45 Break 16:15 Critical Regionalism in Type Design - A survey of moments in history when social, political, economic systems change in parallel with typography (EN) by Nicolas Bernklau, assistant MA Type Design, ECAL 16:35 Aramean communities in Switzerland today (EN) by Melki Toprak, president, and Tony Ürek, secretary, Federation of Arameans in Switzerland 17:00 Concert of the ARAM Ensemble, A view on Syriac traditions, led by Jalal Polus Gajo, soloist, with Ammar Ai Toumi, percussionist Carles Dorador, oud Liqaa Marooki, soloist Marie Wahida, soloist Fadi Wahida, Qanun preceded by an introduction by Véronique Nebel, board member, Laus Plena Foundation (ANG) Workshop 14:00 - 18:00 Gutenberg press with Yvan Hostettler Syriac-Aramaic script with the Aramean Federation of Switzerland 27 February 2022, 14:00-18:00 (FR) Typographic Art: From the Major Names to the Revival Registration This day will take you through the history of typeface design, from the major names to the collection of the Martin Bodmer Foundation, then confronting it with the contemporary practice of revival. With this technique, a typeface is digitally redesigned from a historical typeface, or serves as a template from which a new design is developed, more or less faithfully to its source. The success of these digital fonts and their distribution are interesting mechanisms, which will also be discussed, mirroring the long history of typography, reflected in the collections of the Martin Bodmer Foundation. Conferences 15:00 The major names in typography by Nicolas Ducimetière, vice-director, Martin Bodmer Foundation 15:45 Break 16:15 Revival: digital typography and its relationship to historical models by François Rappo, type designer and typographer, Lausanne with an introduction by Angelo Benedetto, head of BA Graphic Design, ECAL followed by a contribution by Gilles Gavillet, graphic designer and founder, Optimo and Gavillet & Cie on the distribution of revivals by a foundry followed by a Q&A session with all guest speakers Workshop 14:00 - 18:00 19th century press with Nicolas Regamey, Atelier Typo de la Cité 20 March 2022, 14:00-18:00 (FR/EN) Languages and Cultures: Inventing a Materiality Registration A selection of editorial and typographic projects will be presented by their authors, all students or alumni of the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Type Design programmes at ECAL. Whether it is about Cypriot dialects, a Lukumí-Español dictionary, Chinese characters drawn with the help of artificial intelligence tools, the crossing of Hebrew and German in Hebrew Yiddish, Lebanese multilingualism or the history of Cyrillic writing in Russia, these innovative and personal projects are as many different ways of contributing to the perpetuation of a culture, of a language, through their transmission but also, to their possible evolutions. Ornamental Impulse Project
Ornamental Impulse

Timo Tiffert – Ornamental Impulse Ornamental Impulse , the first issue of SUPER FRESCO FUMETTI , is a magazine that addresses a variety of topics in a playful and visually experimental way. The issue deals with structural ornaments found in our everyday architectural life. It questions contemporary craftsmanship, how mass customisation and digital control are reviving the long-lost aura of ornaments and how politics impacts on architecture. By dematerialising the built space and recomposing urban structures, this collection of structural ornaments aims to rethink their use in urban, visual and/or conceptual environments.

L10n Project
L10n

Inés Barrionuevo – L10n L10n is an independent web platform and magazine allowing the geolocation of a quality but non-mediatised movement. It supports artists and aims to compensate for social inequalities. Our society is becoming increasingly post-cultural. Borders, both cultural and geographical, are becoming obsolete. This vision is utopian in the music world, even more so in the so-called mainstream hip-hop genre. Artists do not have the same opportunities in different cultures. As a result, they cannot impact the world to the same extent. Switzerland suffers from this despite its particular style and sound. For its first issue, L10n sought to document and question the stylistic and cultural mixes in hip-hop in French-speaking Switzerland.

MoMo Project
MoMo

Alan Schopfer – MoMo MoMo is a landing mat for beginner and intermediate bloc climbers. It is designed with several distinct sectors filled with recycled and crushed EVA and PU foam waste. Also, by controlling the air outlet, the mat reacts more or less densely depending on the impact. This system allows it to be as dense and compact as required, while still being comfortable and soft. It conforms to any surface and can easily cover rocks vertically. Its Cordura cover allows it to be handled, dragged, pushed and thrown over rocky terrain. Thanks to its air gap and carrying system, it can be rolled, hold equipment and carried on the back on steep paths.

Excerpts from Master Type Design theses Project
Excerpts from Master Type Design theses

Excerpts from Master Type Design theses AUTHOR: Simona Alina Andone TITLE: The Aura of Type Design The Aura of Type Design stems from the necessity of creating a critical discourse around the type design discipline. In which cultural and social settings is type design embedded? This thesis explores some of the contexts in which type design manifests itself – from Instagram to institutions, exhibitions, archives, and so on. What effects do these manifestations have on perceptions about how type design works? ---- AUTHOR: Romain Tronchin TITLE: To be seen not read SUBTITLE: The formal expression of typography Without even being conscious of it, I have always been interested in typography and its shapes. When I was a kid, I was fascinated by the numbers on football shirts. Later, it was graffiti, with its illegible letters. Today, it is the typefaces of designers like Herb Lubalin, Jean Alessandrini or Zuzana Licko that awaken my interest. All these typefaces have one thing in common: they are typefaces that are not meant to be read, but seen. Their formal aspect comes first, before their functionality. So, we can see these expressive typefaces as images before considering them as tools. This sentence by Herb Lubalin sums up this phenomenon well: “Sometimes you sacrifice legibility to increase impact.” ---- AUTHOR: Marcel Saidov TITLE: The Telephone Directories of Total Design and Ladislas Mandel SUBTITLE: Modernist Internationalism and Cultural Identity By comparing the iconic phone book by Total Design with the typefaces and their application in telephone directories by Ladislas Mandel, I want to create a dialogue between traditionalism and modernism; internationalism and cultural identity. I will not only examine the differing design approaches, but also compare two opposing philosophies. In addition, I would like to investigate which kinds of technical knowledge gleaned from the design of telephone directories and their typefaces can still be of use today. By comparing two opposing ideologies of the past century, I will try to conduct a contemporary discourse on type and culture. ---- AUTHOR: Alberto Malossi TITLE: Extraordinary Gentleman SUBTITLE: The typefaces of Giovanni Mardersteig History is something that I have always been keenly interested in. Luckily, I found a way to channel it into my work, which I feel is very much based on historical awareness. Especially as a type designer, the saying “standing on the shoulders of giants” is something that I think about daily: I see my practice as bound to both enshrine the memory of those who came before me, and to build upon their work. That is why I felt a deep connection with the typefaces of Giovanni Mardersteig (1892-1977). His work was always aware of the past, while somehow completely contemporary. ---- AUTHOR: Paul Christ TITLE: Pixels, Geometry, Theosophy, Philosophy In the following thesis, I will be taking a deeper look at geometry, theosophy and the pixel in the oeuvre of JLM Lauweriks (1864–1932). At the same time, I will reflect on the relationship between mysticism, philosophy and geometry in contemporary design through an interview with Dimitri Bruni from NORM, while conducting a short investigation of Jurriaan Schrofer s work. ---- AUTHOR: Chiachi Chao TITLE: Type Design in the Zeitgeist Letters are shapes with intentions. A typeface is an instrument built to convey meanings and information. The design criteria for a typface are clear: it must facilitate the efficiency of the reading process, allowing the eyes to identify the image shape, then glide through the line as fast as possible. Since ‘reading and ‘seeing are two fundamentally different physical mechanisms, the functionality (readability and legibility) in types is always more important than the ‘style of letter-shapes given that text is meant for reading. Its form is determined by the condition in which the typeface intends to be applied. With this premise, type design draws a clear line between graphic design in which personal expression plays a significant role. ---- AUTHOR: Nicolas Bernklau TITLE: Critical Regionalism in Type Design SUBTITLE: A survey of moments in history when social, political and economic systems change in parallel with typography Typography is a substantial part of visual identities and thus a means of identification for countries, corporations and communities. Type can be used as a transporter of aims and values. It can provide orientation and a sense of purpose. Once you see a certain type connected to a particular era, style or area it immediately evokes certain feelings and tells you its narrative. It is a very powerful means. So on the one hand, whenever there is change, type can play a leading role in expressing this change and on the other hand, a new type can be introduced in order to cause change. Examples of such changes could be: A political ideology is associated with a certain style of type, a country switches its script from Arabic to Latin or a type design studio designs a multi-script typeface. All these changes are triggered by different intrinsic or extrinsic motivations and reasons: e.g. historical, economic, political, educational, aesthetic or modernisation reasons. In these cases type is used to embody these changes and socio-political shifts as a transporter of ideas and values. The thesis consists of three parts, the transition from Fraktur to roman, the world political topic of changing type through alphabet shifts as well as internationality in type design today with the topic of expansion. ---- AUTHOR: Benedetta Bovani TITLE: The role of intertitles SUBTITLE: From a typographic necessity to a means of expression Intertitles have been a topic of discussion throughout the more or less thirty years (1895–1930) in which they were largely used. When one would talk about these elements, it was usually to criticise them or to highlight their flaws. Indeed, intertitles were controversial. The use of the word, and especially the written word, in cinema – then a silent medium – was by most seen as unnecessary, even dangerous. Admitting that writing was necessary to the success of cinema was like admitting that silence was a deficit. Nevertheless, intertitles slowly became an essential element, that even today has left its trace in modern films. The goal of this master thesis is to investigate and map the use of intertitles. Starting from their inception, when they were just a typographic necessity, to their prime – when they played an active role in the narration of movies and represented a means of expression as important as picture itself. ---- AUTHOR: Anne Seseke TITLE: Barbara Radice & Fragments of Terrazzo (1988–1995) Ever since I discovered post-modernist objects, I have fostered an ambivalent relationship to them. Their shape, patterns and materials. The more I researched, the more I found interesting writings, interviews and a lot of lesser-known projects. I scraped the shiny, plastic, colourful surface and discovered thought-provoking reflections on society. In this master thesis I will approach my topic in a manner similar to the way in which Barbara Radice edited Terrazzo magazine (1988–1995): strong research roots tied together by a spiderweb of associations. ---- AUTHOR: Antonio D Elisiis TITLE: The Eldorado of Legibility SUBTITLE: Optical sizes, variable fonts and accessibility in the digital environment Designing aesthetically pleasing fonts that remain legible in various situations of use. Achieving this difficult balance has always been the ultimate goal in type design. Sought by punchcutters first, and later by the most modern type designers. These applied two fundamental practices to character design: optical size, and optical correction. I will analyse both practices and how they have evolved over time – especially with the change of various technologies (printing, information support and visualisation, tools that allow the design of characters, etc.). I will also analyse how optical corrections were applied, and why. ---- AUTHOR: Lucile Billot TITLE: Colophons etc. SUBTITLE: A collection of colophons, from medieval to contemporary, and the related stories they tell This master thesis focuses on the narratives of colophons, and some related paratextual devices, such as design notes, acknowledgements etc. The thesis builds bridges between different periods, highlighting (for example) relationships between medieval and contemporary colophons. At first sight, colophons seem to be a quite dry part of any book, as they only deal with credits. But they are not simply the ‘finishing stroke of a book. They also give clues and backdrops, both about the book itself (its content) and its context (in terms of design / production / circulation). This thesis explores the colophons evolution and transformations, as well as the contextual stories that are hidden in them, and the effect they can have on our understanding of a book.

Excerpts from Master Photography theses

Excerpts from Master Photography theses AUTHOR: Sara Bastai TITLE: How to build a collective memory in the digital realm? SUBTITLE: Depicting humankind through methods of preservation It seems, sometimes, like today s main focus of interest lies in how future societies will perceive us. The traces we might leave behind can significantly impact the history and interpretation of our current present. Can we rely on digital preservation? What should we document for the future? How can we represent and preserve society in the 21st century without being reduced to mere computational information processing? This master thesis is a speculative reflection on our current and past methods of preservation of social history. ------ AUTHOR: Maeva Bosko TITLE: Dream worlds SUBTITLE: What happens when we re asleep? Since my early childhood, I have dreamt a lot. Sweet, pleasant or strange dreams, nightmares, sometimes even lucid dreams. Night is when I escape to these virtual worlds. But what are these worlds? Why are they so different from my ordinary waking world? I ve even gotten to the point, on various occasions, when I preferred these dream states to my everyday reality. This is a research project into the world of dreams as an attempt to decode the unconsciousness in relation to the virtual universe and reality we experience at night. ------ AUTHOR: Natalie Maximova TITLE: Walking the landscape, in video games With a focus on landscape representation in video games called “walking simulators”, this thesis attempts to uncover questions related to a complex and ambiguous notion of landscape, from its original conception to today. During my research, I applied the interpretive approach of “reading” and decoding landscapes that have been used by geographers, as well as sociologists, artists and historians. Video game landscapes could be thought of as a system consisting of natural, man-made and cultural forces which can be identified and studied. The landscape in this case plays as a medium that combines, holds and channels these forces. If video game environments exist as part of our culture, what kind of connections do these virtual spaces form? This thesis tries to uncover processes behind the construction of the “natural” in video game environments. ------ AUTHOR: Joanna Wierzbicka TITLE: Why should our bodies end at the skin? SUBTITLE: Rethinking bodily matter beyond a humanist imagination This thesis follows the turn to matter within the fields of body studies, posthuman feminist theory, and new materialism in order to rethink the definition of what a body is and, more importantly, what a body can do. The main research objective is to find out how through questioning the definition of a body and the use of metaphorical thinking in this process, we can establish a more ethical living ground among other bodies. ------ AUTHOR: Olivia Wünsche TITLE: Myths shape reality After having lived a deeply transformative psychedelic experience, all previously held beliefs and perceptions which conditioned my relationship to the surrounding reality, suddenly broke free from the prison of mental programming and limited awareness. Different aspects of this internal change manifested through an almost visceral connection to the Earth. I started to direct my attention towards subjects revolving around environmental and humanitarian crisis, simultaneously wanting to find the cause that has led to our current state of separateness, in which we distance ourselves from others and from nature. I understood quite rapidly that socio-political problem-solving is undoubtedly urgent and indispensable, however it remains shallow and incomplete by treating symptoms without curing the cause. ------ AUTHOR: Zhang Manqin TITLE: A diamond-shaped egg This master thesis is based on different tools that can be used to explore the power of memory. Closely related to the author s “I m not a loner” photo installation, this research project combines fictional writing with the documentary approach of a diary. This is a research project into the world of dreams as an attempt to decode the unconsciousness in relation to the virtual universe and reality we experience at night.------ AUTHOR: Natalie MaximovaTITLE: Walking the landscape, in video gamesWith a focus on landscape representation in video games called “walking simulators”, this thesis attempts to uncover questions related to a complex and ambiguous notion of landscape, from its original conception to today. This thesis tries to uncover processes behind the construction of the “natural” in video game environments.------AUTHOR: Joanna WierzbickaTITLE: Why should our bodies end at the skin?SUBTITLE: Rethinking bodily matter beyond a humanist imagination This thesis follows the turn to matter within the fields of body studies, posthuman feminist theory, and new materialism in order to rethink the definition of what a body is and, more importantly, what a body can do. The main research objective is to find out how through questioning the definition of a body and the use of metaphorical thinking in this process, we can establish a more ethical living ground among other bodies.------ AUTHOR: Olivia WünscheTITLE: Myths shape realityAfter having lived a deeply transformative psychedelic experience, all previously held beliefs and perceptions which conditioned my relationship to the surrounding reality, suddenly broke free from the prison of mental programming and limited awareness. I understood quite rapidly that socio-political problem-solving is undoubtedly urgent and indispensable, however it remains shallow and incomplete by treating symptoms without curing the cause.------ AUTHOR: Zhang ManqinTITLE: A diamond-shaped eggThis master thesis is based on different tools that can be used to explore the power of memory. Closely related to the author s “I m not a loner” photo installation, this research project combines fictional writing with the documentary approach of a diary.

Supertifo Project
Supertifo

Romain Tronchin – Supertifo Supertifo is a typeface family of five styles inspired by the lettering on the banners of ultras. Born at the beginning of the 1970s in the Years of Lead in Italy, ultras were inspired by communist groups to support their club with banners, chants and smoke bombs, taking this passion to the extreme. At the same time, a group of scientists called the Club of Rome published an alarming report about the future of the planet. This report did not have the expected impact and 50 years later the situation is more than worrying. What would have happened if the Club of Rome had been supported by a group of ultras, like a football club?

Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited Project
Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited

Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited The research project Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited is divided into three sub-projects: ‘Principles of Education , ‘Networks of Practice and ‘Strategies of Dissemination . This three-year project is the biggest research collaboration established in the design field since the SNSF began its activities. Swiss graphic design and typography are representative of Swiss culture, but have themselves also had an impact on this country s national identity. In the SNSF project Swiss Graphic Design and Typography Revisited, seven universities engage in joint research into the status of Swiss graphic design from today s perspective. Coordinated by the Bern University of the Arts, researchers of the universities of applied sciences from Basel, Geneva, Lausanne, Lugano, and Zurich, as well as from the University of Bern are participating. In the three sub-projects, mixed groups of researchers from the different institutions investigate into different aspects of Swiss graphic design – its teaching, its networks and its forms of publication. The result is a critical contribution to our understanding of the emergence and current self-perception of Swiss graphic design and typography. Above and beyond this, the project helps to consolidate ‘design history as a field of research and practice in Switzerland, and provides new, relevant findings for the international scholarly discourse on visual communication.Main applicantsHKB – Haute école des arts de Berne Arne Scheuermann Michael Renner Sarah Owens Peter J. The Sources of Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography Project
The Sources of Jan Tschichold’s The New Typography

The Sources of Jan Tschichold s The New Typography Jan Tschichold s essay Die neue Typographie (The New Typography, 1928) is a game-changing book, acclaimed as the curtain raiser of modern graphic design. While it takes the form of a critical essay and an operative manual, its sources have been understudied because of their difficult identification. This project aims to reconstruct the body of sources that Tschichold drew on to understand the broader cultural context of the book, through an international conference on its impact and a travelling exhibition. The year 2018 marked the 90th anniversary of the publication of Jan Tschichold s Die neue Typographie (The New Typography). After almost a century, Tschichold s game-changing book, together with the typographic movement that stemmed from it, still attracts the interest and curiosity of graphic design historians and practitioners. The book has entered the historiographical canon and its appeal has not faded. Yet, The New Typography is a victim of its own success: it enjoys the benefits of canonisation, while suffering some side effects. Having reached an almost mythical status, The New Typography is often taken for granted and rarely questioned or closely scrutinised. This paradox is the starting point of the present research project. Jan Tschichold (Leipzig 1902 – Locarno 1974) was a German-born, Swiss-naturalised typographer, type and book designer, teacher, typography theorist and critic. In the 1920s he became one of the leaders of the New Typography movement. His conversion to the Modernist cause was mediated by the Bauhaus lesson. This was learnt first through a visit to the Bauhaus exhibition in Weimar in the summer of 1923, and encouraged in the following years through acquaintance and friendship with key exponents of the Modernist movement such as László Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky. With the Nazis rise to power in 1933, Tschichold escaped Germany and took refuge in Switzerland, where he spent the rest of his life with the exception of two stays in England, in 1937 and between 1947 and 1949. Published in Berlin in 1928, Tschichold s The New Typography is a manifesto. It follows an earlier statement published in October 1925 in a special issue of the trade magazine Typographische Mitteilungen, entitled “Elementare Typographie.” It was intended as a textbook for graphic designers, printers, typesetters and typographers. The term “New Typography” was first used by László Moholy-Nagy in the Bauhaus exhibition catalogue of 1923. The New Typography, also known as “elementary” or “functional” typography, is the manifestation of Modernism in graphic design and printed communication. Its rules included the privilege for sans-serif typefaces, non-centred page layouts, photography and photomontage, standardised paper sizes, and the active use of white space. After the war, Tschichold gradually distanced himself from the New Typography. He condemned the rigidity of the movement from both a political-moral and a strictly typo- graphical perspective. The research project relies on the hypothesis that, despite being broadly considered a pivotal and game-changing book that paved the way to modern graphic design, The New Typography deserves further and closer scrutiny. Building on the hypothesis that bibliographic sources are among the so-far overlooked and neglected aspects of The New Typography which are waiting to be identified, discussed and contextualised, the research project employs them as a means to open the black box in which Tschichold s book has been kept until now. Once the bibliographical references (books, magazines, grey literature) have been identified, the project investigates what they can tell us about the lineage in which The New Typography was rooted and the kind of discourses and networks it stemmed from. The focus on the sources aims to provide a more complex alternative to the worn-out rhetoric of the “pioneers” of graphic design.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Matthieu Cortat Davide FornariResearch teamChiara Barbieri Martin SøbergPeriodMay 2019 – June 2021Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne HES–SO, Fonds stratégique RCDAVDisseminationWebsite die-neue-bibliographie.ch Conference Jan Tschichold s The New Typography: Its Roots and Impact on National Scenes, 26 April 2023, ECAL/École cantonale d art de Lausanne

VideoArt Festival Locarno (1980–2001) – Symposium Online

Founded by the art dealer Rinaldo Bianda, the VideoArt Festival Locarno (1980-2001) was a pioneer platform for the presentation of the video art in Europe. Its series of colloquium and round tables organised by theorist and museum director René Berger made it a central platform for the theoretical exploration of the impact of video and, more broadly, of technology, on perception, as well as of the emergence of ‘technoculture and the reorganisation of knowledge. Concluding the research project supported by the Swiss National Science Foundation and based at ECAL, this colloquium seeks to revisit the VideoArt Festival and critically address its history and its role in championing and shaping video and new media art in Europe, through discussions and presentations with its protagonists as well as by experts in the field. Those who care to know each other (photography) Project
Those who care to know each other (photography)

Thibault Villard – Those who care to know each other (photography) Two figures meet in a pitch black room to make love. Once the lights are on, Lucien and Anton are faced with their differences but are drawn even closer together. Fiction / 18 min Synopsis West Lausanne – 2020. A Grindr encounter sees two men meet in an apartment, leading to unusual nocturnal reflections on youth and love. Comment I designed the film s tones in relation to a cinematic period that is dear to me, in line with Christopher Doyle and Jean-Yves Escoffier. The film is dark and somewhat expressionist. Nowadays, if you use digitally assisted workflows, cinema photography can quickly become bland, which is why I was not afraid to play with the limits of the camera. Thibault Villard

Rondinella Project
Rondinella

Nikita Merlini – Rondinella Staying with her mother after the fire, Sofia dreams of freedom. But the smell of smoke doesn t leave.. Fiction / 24 min / Mention Very good Synopsis After their house burns down, 18-year-old Sofia and her mother Carla have to live together in a small room at « The Little Swallow Hotel ». Sofia explores the building and meets new inspiring people. A thousand opportunities seem to open up for her. Carla, on the other hand, has to get used to the idea of her daughter leaving. In this closed-door environment, mother and daughter try to find a new balance in their relationship. Comment A mother and her daughter in a hotel room, a few meters from what was their house... gone up in smoke, taking their common past with them. The film, like a parenthesis in this place of transit that is "La Rondinella", where strangers meet and make memories, spaces of intimacy, a place where Sofia and her mother seek to rebuild, with the fragility and awkwardness that characterize the love that binds a daughter to her mother. Nikita invests the enclosed space by the character, Sofia, formidably interpreted by Elena Stoll, who bewitches us by her presence, her face at the same time babyish and feminine, and with whom Nikita continues his collaboration. Sofia draws us into her boredom, her expectations, her encounters, her solitary wanderings, but above all into her impulse for life and renewal. For Rondinella is also the portrait of this youth, full of dreams and obstacles. Nikita Merlini directs a sensitive, delicate, hypnotic film that seizes time. This vulnerable time. The time of childhood. The time of emancipation. The time of suffocating, yet unfailing love. Elsa Amiel / Director

Imperial (direction) Project
Imperial (direction)

Coline Confort – Imperial (direction) At dawn, a cannon shatters the silence. The horses gallop across the beaten ground. Eva, 21, wants to join the Imperial HorseGuards, a historical reenactment of a Napoleonic regiment reserved for men. Documentary / 22 min Synopsis At dawn, a cannon shatters the silence. The horses gallop across the beaten ground. Eva, 21, wants to join the Imperial HorseGuards, a historical reenactment of a Napoleonic regiment reserved for men. In search of romance, she conceals her identity so that she can set her foot in the stirrup //(climb into the saddle), defying a 200-year-old ban. In this world of powder and smoke, Eva finally finds herself as she had always dreamed: ‘a handsome soldier beside a beautiful princess. Comment There are films that take a long time to be found, others that are born of an obviousness. One cannot say which is preferable. One cannot tell by looking at a film if its trajectory was eventful or peaceful. What counts is its impact on the present and the trace it leaves. Imperial has known versions of the script very different from the finished film. But these variants have nourished Coline s reflection, and this documentary carries within it all the others that were not made. Like layers. As if it had taken all these detours to finally manage to tell us a simple story, one of those that always thrill us, a story of desire and love. We can notice the great maturity in the management of the duration of the shots, the beauty of the frames and the attention given to the light. The almost feverish look at her character, while at the same time a great determination in the way she accompanies her. Eva s trajectory is simple and fluid in its accomplishment, and this simplicity (so difficult to achieve) is movingly beautiful. As can be the look of Eva on a young girl who is enough to put "a little glitter in her life". Laurent Larivière / Director

Delivery Trip Project
Delivery Trip

Stefan Tanase – Delivery Trip In 2017 I started to focus on the contemporary meaning of “delivery” as a daily job in real life. Since then, this concept has become the main subject of my artistic approach. This topic has also become a cultural movement throughout the world. Nowadays, “delivery” acts as a daily reminder about my day-to-day work. Hence, when you see someone in the city making a delivery or when he/she is delivering something to your home, it evokes my work and vice versa. What comes to your mind when you think about delivery? Struggles, illusions of happiness, easy money, the youth, neighbourhood life, the working classes, etc. More than that, the cultural aspect of delivery impacts upon everyone (Amazon, DHL, artwork deliveries, Uber Eats to name but a few…). For my graduation project I address the concept of delivery like a trip (excursion) and a journey under the influence (trip). What next?

Passerines Project
Passerines

Aurore Péry – Passerines “Passerines” is a short animated film that addresses the notion of cycle in the environment, through the theme of bird migration and its deterioration in relation to various aspects of human activity. Inspired by educational films and wildlife documentaries, this project aims to raise awareness of our impact on our environment through a loop that our actions influence and which deteriorates with time. Between contemplative scenes and explanations, this short film is an invitation to question our relationship to our environment. Prix BG Ingénieurs Conseils

Visite Maciet Project
Visite Maciet

Astrid Durand – Visite Maciet The aim of this project is to question our perception of museums and the artefacts within them. The issue here pertains to the museum s impact on the obsolescence or enhancement of the material exhibited. With the Maciet collection, I sought to create a hybrid, flowing exhibition. The carpet, the main medium of this project, enhances our relationship with handicrafts and artefacts while providing visitors with a new museum experience and overcoming traditional hierarchies.

"Thek it and Hang it" installation Event
"Thek it and Hang it" installation

"Thek it and Hang it" installation,02.06.2020–18.04.2021,Musée romain de Lausanne-Vidy As part of the exhibition "Le temps et moi" at the Musée romain de Lausanne-Vidy, "Thek it and Hang it" installation created at the instigation of artist Miriam Laura Leonardi. Installation created at the instigation of artist Miriam Laura Leonardi by Djellza Azemi, Ana-Francesca Balan, Tudor Ciurescu, Peilian Li, Cyane Findji, Ernest Gachet, Tennessee MacDougall, Christian Schulz and Stefan Tanase, students from the Bachelor Fine Arts at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. As part of the exhibition "Le temps et moi" at the Musée romain de Lausanne-Vidy, from 2 June 2020 to 18 April 2021. Inspired by the notions of time and memory, the American artist Paul Thek (born in Brooklyn, 1933 - 1988) proposed to its students to design "something to put over a child s bed". A group from ECAL took up the same topic to imagine and create this installation. The time here is upside down: a cradle has been dismantled, its bars soaked in wax, then sunk one s teeth into, before being put back together as a mobile. Common in children s rooms, especially above cribs, mobiles entertain infants and stimulate their sight. The bed protecting the child here becomes a fragile distraction, suspended in the room covered with soft carpet topped with blue. On the floor, the night light is a bulb covered by hair. And by way of a lullaby, you can get carried away by a poem more disturbing than soothing in the earphone... Thanks to Philippe Decrauzat, Stéphane Kropf, Charly Mirambeau, Gina Proenza and Paul Thek as well as the Roman Museum team. Dates and times From 2 June 2020 to 18 April 2021 Normal: 11:00-18:00 Closed on Mondays, except July-August and public holidays. Closed on 24, 25, 31 December and 1st January. "Making FASHION Sense" exhibition with ECAL graduates Event
"Making FASHION Sense" exhibition with ECAL graduates

"Making FASHION Sense" exhibition with ECAL graduates,16.01–08.03.2020,HEK, Basel On the occasion of the exhibition " Making FASHION Sense " at HeK - Haus der elektronischen Künste Basel until 8 March 2020, two ECAL alumni presents several projects. This exhibition showcases the radical transformation of fashion through technology. Robot arms and mixed reality, holograms and drones have all paraded down international catwalks. «Making FASHION Sense» focuses on the impact of technology upon creative processes in the fashion industry, as well as on artistic paths leading towards increasing sustainability: Fashion which makes sense. With "BASE" (2019), presented for his BA Media & Interaction Design diploma, the Swiss designer Alfatih introduces a concept of fashion for digital spaces, and thereby an alternative fashion economy. The project includes a collection of filters for Instagram/Snapchat, a series of garments that can be used for avatars in the game Grand Theft Auto, as well as an interactive installation/performance presenting the concept of the brand BASE. “Active Shoes” (2019) by ECAL BA Industrial Design graduate Christophe Guberan belongs to a series of “active textiles”, which uses technology to radically questiontraditional production processes. By printing on stretch fabrics of varying layer thicknesses, he develops self-assembling designs which reconfigure themselves in preprogrammed shapes. ECAL at the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020 Event
ECAL at the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020

ECAL at the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020,09–22.01.2020,Lausanne On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020 , ECAL particpates in several projects. On the occasion of the Youth Olympic Games – Lausanne 2020, ECAL particpates in several projects: --- Design of the cauldron, medal trays and podiums The cauldron, the medal trays and the podiums are three of the most symbolic elements of the Olympic Games. Second-year Industrial Design Bachelor s students from the ECAL were tasked with designing them. The students had to meet certain operational constraints and technical requirements: The cauldron must be able to be supplied with wood pellets, the result of a partnership between several organisations in the Vaud region, including the Lignum Vaud, which brings together all the regional players in the wood sector. This ecological innovation makes this cauldron the most eco-responsible in the history of the Olympic Games. It must also be removable and an integral part of the Games legacy. The podiums would have to be assembled outside at the last minute, often on uneven ground. They needed to be solid, light and large enough for several athletes. The medal trays had to be big enough to hold both medals and mascots. Cauldron Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Student: François Lafortune Production: C-FOR! + Ecole de la construction This cauldron project took inspiration from “freeskiing” culture, seeking to reflect it in both style and substance. Freeskiing is the world of skateparks and snowparks, with which many young people are very familiar. The installation comprises a mini jump and a ramp, with the cauldron placed at the top. The project s designer, François, envisaged that it would be an integral part of the Opening Ceremony and that the cauldron could be lit by a freerider. After Lausanne 2020, the installation is set to be converted into part of a permanent skatepark for the people of Lausanne. Podium Design: ECAL (Bachelor Industrial Design) Students: Louis Bétin + Theo Luvisotto + Estelle Rougerie Production: Ecole de la construction The podiums juxtapose the outlines of three mountain ranges where the competitions are being held: the Jura mountains, the Vaud Alps and the mountains of St Moritz. Plateaux des médailles Design and Production: (Bachelor Industrial Design) Student: Olivia Dall Omo The medal trays have coverings in the colours of the official hat worn by the volunteers. “The outfit is completed by a pair of mittens. So you ll be nice and warm, and all set to go cheer on your favourite athletes!” Mapping of the BodyCity Show Unique creation imagined for Lausanne en Jeux! - the animation program of the Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 - BodyCity is a show where arts and urban sports meet in an impressive open-air setting, on the place Centrale of Lausanne. Five performances will take place in public on January 9, 11, 12, 18 and 19, 2020 at 6 p.m. "Bodies in fusion with the city", it is from this strong image that Nicolas Musin directed BodyCity, a contemporary show questioning the relationship of young generations to the city. On an open-air stage representing a city in constant mutation, more than 50 performers aged between 9 and 30 years will cross their disciplines from January 9, bringing together urban arts and sports suchas skateboarding, BMX, rollerblading, scooter, parkour and dance. Imagined within the framework of Lausanne en Jeux!, this show is above all a work of youth carried by art schools and urbandisciplines training centers established in the Lausanne conurbation. BodyCity was thus able to bring together different Lausanne actors such as the students of the ECAL (conception of video images) of the HEMU (composition of the original music and recording of the soundtrack), thedancers of the Ecole-Atelier Rudra Béjart (dance and percussion), JDS Events (hip hop, breakdance) aswell as the riders of La Fièvre and the tracers of X-Trem Move. A meeting between different cultures and disciplines that the director Nicolas Musin has managed to reunite in order to offer a unique and unprecedented show in Lausanne. The mapping of the show was thus created by the students of the Visual Communication Department (BA Graphic Design, BA Photography, BA Media & Interaction Design) under the direction of Vincent Jacquier, Angelo Benedetto, Jean-Vincent Simonet and Mitch Paone while editing was managed by Amaury Hamon and Clément Lambelet.

Smartphone Peripheral Companions Project
Smartphone Peripheral Companions

Smartphone Peripheral Companions The research project Smartphone Peripheral Companions explores new forms of interaction with the data flows passing through our smartphone, questioning the status of total object that this device has acquired. So much of contemporary culture and interactions is taking place through interfaces; interfaces are part of cultural expression and participation. Therefore, questioning the impact of the mechanisms underlying current smartphone interfaces is also a societal interest. The research team conducted a number of reflections around a broad vision of the issues related to the use of smartphones and the data flows that pass through them. In order to also collect contributions from smartphone users, they set up an online participatory platform, voluntarily moving away from the usual form of the scientific questionnaire. By imagining, designing and prototyping new objects or apparatuses, this project aims to offer proposals for re-appropriation, re-extraction of certain features locked in the smartphone, thereby allowing a different, more customizable access to data or functions. Consequently, fostering a shift from the glowing rectangle to a more detached and focused interaction, away from the screen. The main results of the project include a series of 5 to 10 objects offering alternative access to some data transiting through the smartphone. These semi-functional prototypes are documented and presented as images and films on the project website as well as made available for exhibition. A kit of tools and instructions to reproduce some of them, together with an ever-growing, participative collection of anonymous testimonies from smartphone is also accessible online.Main applicantECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research team (research assistant) (research assistant) Andreas Sonderegger Visiting lecturerJesse HowardStudents, , , , , , , , Emily Groves, , , , , , , , , , , Periodseptember 2018 – february 2020Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationWebsite smartphone-confessions.worldPartnerEPFL+ECAL Lab
