Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac – 2022 Project
Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac – 2022

Documentary film workshop with Guillaume Brac – 2022 The 2022 documentary workshop was lead by Guillaume Brac. In partnership with the Lausanne Sport! ECAL film department proposed that I accompany ten second-year students on a documentary mandate financed by Lausanne Sport, the city s historic soccer club. Although I am interested in this sport, I was very clear from the start: it was not a question of making a film about soccer or the functioning of the club, but a film in which soccer would be the starting point, the spark, allowing me to go on to much more personal, intimate, singular elements. I insisted on the liberating power of the commission, at least when it is accompanied by a real freedom, which was the case here. I encouraged each student to find, if necessary to invent, the form, the device, the staging, that best corresponded to his or her sensitivity and subject. Documentary films offer to curious and adventurous filmmakers infinitely more possibilities in terms of film writing than fiction. And I believe that the films of this workshop, of an extreme diversity of forms, tones, and motifs, are a brilliant demonstration of this. Applied Photography - Spring 2023 - MAP1 Project
Applied Photography - Spring 2023 - MAP1

Applied Photography - Spring 2023 - MAP1 The Applied Photography course will look into the concept of photorealism in all its means. Cactus Magazine has always worked on new visual languages through all sorts of techniques; classic photography, graphic design, video, CGI, VR, Sound design. The only feature that has always guided this research was to seek for a photorealistic result that could ensure a sophisticated and luxurious feeling to the final outcome. In the past 4 years Cactus Magazine has been exploring the CGI technique and always tried to emulate the classic photographic style applied in the 3D realm. This had been done by the means of lights, textures, modeling and also camera techniques. After doing a lot of CGI work we got interested in merging the IRL world in a seamless way with the CGI world. Using XR techniques or VFX. But always looking to have a perfect photorealistic result. With the emergence of Ai powered software for image generating, creating HD images of almost everything seems to be everyone s finger tip. Nowadays people consume more CGI imagery than IRL imagery, just think of Instagram filters.

The wonderful pain of the wild Broom (Direction) Project
The wonderful pain of the wild Broom (Direction)

Olivia Calcaterra – The wonderful pain of the wild Broom (Direction) In the desert of southern Spain, a film designed to bring together animal and human emotions through the trauma of abandonment. Documentary / 22 min Synopsis In the desert of southern Spain, a film designed to bring together animal and human emotions through the trauma of abandonment. Comment Having gone in search of stray and abandoned Spanish greyhounds in Almeria, I decided to address the theme of abandonment through a documentary focusing on the introspection of emotions linked to this trauma. Inspired by Leopardi s poem about resilience, I sought to bring together human and canine feelings in the experience of being abandoned by someone. The urge to make a documentary came after my first documentary last year. I wanted to try to give the project an aesthetic sense linked to fiction, to have two contrasting worlds in the film. The film is accompanied by a narrative voice, which is not didactic, in order to unite the reportage side with a more photogenic and experimental aspect. Olivia Calcaterra

Les mouches de Beni (Direction) Project
Les mouches de Beni (Direction)

Alice Denyse – Les mouches de Beni (Direction) Beni, a young woman with bipolar disorder, forms a musical friendship with her 65-year-old neighbour Gégé. Fiction / 20 min Synopsis One evening, Beni, a young woman, meets her 65 year old neighbour Gégé. The two women become friends and Beni invites Gégé to discover her world through a surprising adventure. The birth of their cross-generational friendship will shed light on the complexity of bipolarity, a disorder from which Beni suffers. Music unites them and strengthens the core of their friendship. Student s comment Beni, a young woman with bipolar disorder, befriends her next-door neighbour, Gégé, a 65-year-old woman with a passion for her gospel choir. Bipolarity is a subject that touches me personally, since my grandmother Denyse, after whom I am named, was bipolar. In order to better understand this illness, I met people with bipolar disorder who helped me clarify the point of view developed in my film. This also helped me understand the importance of female solidarity for the people concerned. This is why I wanted to portray a relationship between two women where mutual care and support are essential. A colourful film to reflect Beni s vision: I wanted the viewer to identify with her. Alice Denyse Matthey

Drifiting away (Direction) Project
Drifiting away (Direction)

Marion Reymond – Drifiting away (Direction) A young caregiver uses her imagination to cope with the mourning of her mother and to escape from the nursing home where she works. Fiction / 13 30 min Synopsis A young caregiver reverts to a fantasy world to cope with the grief of losing her mother and to escape from the drudgery of the care home where she works. Student s comment Drifting Away (A la dérive) is based on a desire to film a place that is crowded, in this case a nursing home, with the aim of exploring group effects. The tone of the film plays with situational comedy and questions the meaning of existence and death between shots. One of the particularities of the film is that it mixes mediums, between live action and animated sequences. Drifting Away is defined as a sound and poetic film. Marion Reymond

The Parade (Direction) Project
The Parade (Direction)

Michail Galanopoulos – The Parade (Direction) A day in the life of a group of high school students in Athens, Greece, during the day of the national military parade. Fiction / 24 min Synopsis A group of high school students meet to participate in the national parade with their school. A student, is bullied by the teacher because of her nationality. They react, defend her and the conflict becomes intense. To avoid the consequences, they decide to run away. They settle on the top of a nearby hill and spend the rest of the day there, as an act of escapism. Up there, they seem to have forgotten their anxieties and problems, as if they were in another world. Student s comment The film s cinematographic approach is anthropocentric and strongly focused on the characters of the story. The use of handheld camera allows us to follow multiple characters, not limiting the actors movements, but also giving them the freedom to experience the real locations in which they are filmed. The editing, with breaks in the axis several times in the duration of a scene, connecting several shots that depict the same action and pass from one character to another, was chosen specifically for this type of cinematography. The sound establishes continuity throughout each scene.

Ramboy (Direction) Project
Ramboy (Direction)

Matthias Joulaud – Ramboy (Direction) Ramboy is a 30-minute documentary short film, the result of work done with a family of sheep farmers on an Irish island. Being immersed for several months in this island allowed me to weave strong links and to offer a documentary which condenses at the same time problems related to the adolescence of a young boy, and to the hard social and economic reality of a trade whose traditions are under threat. Documentary / 30 min Synopsis On Achill Island, a predominantly sheep-populated island off the west coast of Ireland, Cian tries his best to train his grandfather s sheep dog, Martin. From an opening scene that shows the teenager struggling with disobedient animals and a patient but firm grandfather, the long and rigorous apprenticeship of farm work begins, during a summer he would have preferred to spend with his friends. Wearing a soccer jersey and city sneakers, Cian is confronted with the harshness and demands of a job that he admires and respects, but in which he is not sure he has a long term vision.

Outside (Direction) Project
Outside (Direction)

Charlène Girel – Outside (Direction) It is raining in the park. Natacha and her son Eli are looking for a shelter for the night. Walter wanders alone with his guitar. Fiction / 23 mn Synopsis The rain wets the park where Eli is playing alone. Drops fall on Natacha s embarrassed face as she searches through her phone book for a solution. Not far away, Walter is wandering alone. The sound of his guitar travels up to the mother and child who are seeking shelter for the night. The hostility of the outside world, the fear of being left behind and an encounter, that of a mother and child who have recently become homeless with an outsider: for a moment, in all their modesty, they inspire us with a semblance of a blended family. An actress, a child, a bohemian. Unstable weather, a lot of improvisation and flexibility. A lesson in freedom, simplicity and letting go. For me, as for others, the experience of a project flirting with the documentary was like a powerful rite of passage.

Moments later, she s sitting in the delivery truck with her dog and Antonio, the mattress salesman. Joana doesn t seem to be in a hurry to get home. As it turns out, Antonio doesn t seem to be in a hurry either. He also finds himself facing a major change in his life. His mattress shop is about to close and his future also seems to be full of doubts and uncertainties. Little by little, both of them realize the similarities of their situation. They both find themselves at a point in their lives where they don t know what to do. But if they don t know what to do or where they want to go, one thing unites them, following the dog s example, they will follow their instincts. Student s statement The universe depicted in the film is an absurd one that reveals how we can feel like strangers in the world we live in. We feel humankind s constant plight, torn between hope and despair. The characters run away from all their problems in their own way and avoid getting involved in other people s problems. Existential crises are a central theme of our time. Nowadays, there is constant doubt about the possibility of establishing any meaningful relationship with the world around us.

Nina Defontaine – Clémente (direction) The portrait of Monique (my grandmother) as i accompany her in the great sorting of her objects (her ghosts) at her family house (Clémente). ninadefontaine@gmail.com https://cargocollective.com/ninaphotographies/cinematographie Documentary / 30mn Synopsis Un portrait de ma grand-mère, Monique, 81 ans, qui tente de se détacher des présences de sa maison, Clémente. Director s statement After discovering my grandmother s home movies I sought to explore the filmic outlook of the women in my family and find out what shaped their lives on the most intimate scale. I assisted Monique as she began sorting out her whole life, her objects as well as her memories. Images of the past blended with those of her present daily life as I filmed in 16mm what I hoped to keep from her. The film anchors the presences that flow from my grandmother to her world. Together, we address family transmission, gender constructs and motherhood.

Ecce homo (direction) Project
Ecce homo (direction)

Santiago Chacón – Ecce homo (direction) Juan Antonio finds his father who is back home after a long absence. There, during the preparation of the most important religious festival of the city : the Ecce homo; father and son go to share in solitude, their hatreds for each other. santichacon91@gmail.com Fiction / 14min Synopsis José visits the main church in the city of Popayán, Colombia. The faithful prepare the most important celebration of the Catholic tradition of this place: the procession of the Ecce homo. After his visit, José returns home to his father, Juan Antonio who is back after a long absence. Life brings them together again, but something burns in him. Juan Antonio, a man of brute strength, no longer has the physical strength that accompanied him throughout his life. He and José, who grew up under his strong and conservative authority, will confront each other and let themselves be led by love and hate. During this meeting, José will allow himself for the first time to participate in the procession of the Ecce homo, which his father always forbade him to go to because the celebration is only for men and for Juan Antonio he is not a real man. Student s Commentaire Ecce Homo has gone through me deeply. From its conception, the project questioned me about my life, my ancestors and the city where I come from. It also questioned me about the way I relate to my family, to those around me; it made me understand with love their thoughts, but it also confronted them, opposed them and finally healed them. I want to make films to understand myself and the things around me and, from this understanding, make films as a way of healing, a remedy.

Imperial (direction)

Coline Confort – Imperial (direction) At dawn, a cannon shatters the silence. The horses gallop across the beaten ground. Eva, 21, wants to join the Imperial HorseGuards, a historical reenactment of a Napoleonic regiment reserved for men. Documentary / 22 min Synopsis At dawn, a cannon shatters the silence. The horses gallop across the beaten ground. Eva, 21, wants to join the Imperial HorseGuards, a historical reenactment of a Napoleonic regiment reserved for men. In search of romance, she conceals her identity so that she can set her foot in the stirrup //(climb into the saddle), defying a 200-year-old ban. In this world of powder and smoke, Eva finally finds herself as she had always dreamed: ‘a handsome soldier beside a beautiful princess. Comment There are films that take a long time to be found, others that are born of an obviousness. One cannot say which is preferable. One cannot tell by looking at a film if its trajectory was eventful or peaceful. What counts is its impact on the present and the trace it leaves. Imperial has known versions of the script very different from the finished film. But these variants have nourished Coline s reflection, and this documentary carries within it all the others that were not made. Like layers. As if it had taken all these detours to finally manage to tell us a simple story, one of those that always thrill us, a story of desire and love. We can notice the great maturity in the management of the duration of the shots, the beauty of the frames and the attention given to the light. The almost feverish look at her character, while at the same time a great determination in the way she accompanies her. Eva s trajectory is simple and fluid in its accomplishment, and this simplicity (so difficult to achieve) is movingly beautiful. As can be the look of Eva on a young girl who is enough to put "a little glitter in her life". Laurent Larivière / Director

Comme dans un film

Fanny-Laure Bovet – Comme dans un film « A place where images were not enough and words were redundant. I went on a spiritual and physical journey into the past, the present and perhaps the future too, with my family. It was a rollercoaster ride. It was difficult to get to the end  because the end had happened before I started. Comme dans un film is a short film about language. How we communicate with  each other or don t. Your language defines how you interact with others, how others interact with you. »
