ECAL x Jean Paul Gaultier: Smells Like Queer Spirit "Smells Like Queer Spirit" at Musée des beaux-arts du Locle - an exhibition created in collaboration with Jean Paul Gaultier by third-year Bachelor Photography students, under the direction of Florence Tétier and Nicolas Coulomb (Novembre magazine). In the 1980s Jean Paul Gaultier overturned dress codes and showed the porous boundary between masculine and feminine. The fashion designer playfully reversed roles, overturned gender and designed silhouettes that combined masculine sensitivity with feminine power. When they were launched, the brand s perfume bottles also broke with the androgynous fashion of the 1990s. Now iconic, these served as the starting point for photographic exploration by students of the Bachelor in Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. For this research project directed by Florence Tétier and Nicolas Coulomb – under the watchful eye of Claude Emmanuelle Gajan-Maull, consultant LGBTQIA+ – the photography class questioned the human body and its representations. The images created in 2021 by the 12 students relate to themes of pride and tolerance. These works show that commitment to a more inclusive society also relies on images. A publication, co-edited by ECAL x Jean Paul Gaultier x Novembre and designed by Baptiste Gerbelot Barillon & Jean Marques, is also being published to coincide with this exhibition. ECAL x Fondation Martin Bodmer - Scripts of the World,24.01–20.03.2022,Fondation Martin Bodmer, Cologny (GE) ECAL / University of Art and Design Lausanne and the Fondation Martin Bodmer have joined forces to celebrate typographic creation and the scripts of the world. ECAL will present original projects in contemporary typography and graphic design, from its Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Type Design programmes, comparing them with Fondation Martin Bodmer s UNESCO listed heritage through a series of lectures, events and workshops on Sunday afternoons on 6 February, 27 February and 20 March 2022. 6 February 2022, 14:00-18:00 The Scripts of Aram: Syriac-Aramaic Typefaces (FR/EN) Registration At the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, the Switzerland and Liechtenstein office of the UNHCR, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, collaborated with the students of the ECAL Master Type Design on a case: the Syriac script. Historically used to transcribe languages over a vast geographical area, Syriac is today mainly used as the liturgical script of Eastern Christians. Speakers of Modern Aramaic languages live in Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Iraq, but compose mainly a worldwide diaspora. While only a few digital fonts exist, providing contemporary and innovative typefaces would contribute to broadening the possibilities for the language to thrive, as well as to cultivate community ties. This day proposes to celebrate Syriac writing and Aramaic culture through the collections of the Martin Bodmer Foundation, typography projects of the ECAL and various reflections on writing, its power, its relationship to politics, language and identity. Conferences 14:30 Politics and type design, Syriac script: a case study (FR) by Matthieu Cortat, head of MA Type Design, ECAL 15:00 About the publication "Aram" (FR) by Elena Baranowski, student MA Type Design, ECAL 15:15 Syriac in the collections of the Fondation Martin Bodmer (FR) by Nicolas Ducimetière, vice-director, Fondation Martin Bodmer 15:45 Break 16:15 Critical Regionalism in Type Design - A survey of moments in history when social, political, economic systems change in parallel with typography (EN) by Nicolas Bernklau, assistant MA Type Design, ECAL 16:35 Aramean communities in Switzerland today (EN) by Melki Toprak, president, and Tony Ürek, secretary, Federation of Arameans in Switzerland 17:00 Concert of the ARAM Ensemble, A view on Syriac traditions, led by Jalal Polus Gajo, soloist, with Ammar Ai Toumi, percussionist Carles Dorador, oud Liqaa Marooki, soloist Marie Wahida, soloist Fadi Wahida, Qanun preceded by an introduction by Véronique Nebel, board member, Laus Plena Foundation (ANG) Workshop 14:00 - 18:00 Gutenberg press with Yvan Hostettler Syriac-Aramaic script with the Aramean Federation of Switzerland 27 February 2022, 14:00-18:00 (FR) Typographic Art: From the Major Names to the Revival Registration This day will take you through the history of typeface design, from the major names to the collection of the Martin Bodmer Foundation, then confronting it with the contemporary practice of revival. With this technique, a typeface is digitally redesigned from a historical typeface, or serves as a template from which a new design is developed, more or less faithfully to its source. The success of these digital fonts and their distribution are interesting mechanisms, which will also be discussed, mirroring the long history of typography, reflected in the collections of the Martin Bodmer Foundation. New website: ecal-typefaces.ch,15.12.2021,wwww.ecal-typefaces.ch Active since 2016 and having published nearly 30 fonts so far, the ECAL Typefaces website has been completely updated with a new design and new features: ecal-typefaces.ch Active since 2016 and having published nearly 30 fonts so far, the ECAL Typefaces website has been completely updated with a new design and new features: www.ecal-typefaces.ch ECAL Typefaces is the first online type foundry based within a university. Its initial remit was to respond to frequent requests to purchase typefaces featured in ECAL corporate communications such as posters, invitation cards and catalogues. The foundry is now fully embedded in the ECAL Master Type Design programme and also showcases work from the school s Bachelor Graphic Design programme. All the fonts are designed by students. From 2021 this new website will offer a broader overview of our students works. We have now added a ‘Stories tab to present an ever-evolving collection of student writings that reflect on the challenges that are driving contemporary type design forward. These essays are written and edited in the Master Type Design theory classes under the supervision of Wayne Daly and Roland Früh. The fonts sold on ECAL Typefaces typically originated from classes tutored by Kai Bernau, Matthieu Cortat, Alice Savoie or Radim Peško, as well as workshops led by internationally renowned guests. These provide students with the opportunity to help select typeface releases and determine how they represent their typefaces in a professional foundry. Their designs are developed from early sketches to workable files under the close supervision of Malte Bentzen. The new version uses broader criteria and includes text fonts and larger families, enabling students to demonstrate a wider range of skills, thereby highlighting the working process. In addition, a new license model adds a more precise and clear approach to licensing fonts so that clients may find a license model that meets their needs more precisely. The design of the new website was created with the aim of making it easier for users to browse, test and purchase the typefaces. Half of the income generated from sales goes directly to the students, with the remainder contributing to running costs, technical assistance and inviting guest lecturers to offer us their insights into the world of font design.
Images Vevey x ECAL Award exhibition: Sara Bastai,14.12.2021–30.01.2022,L Appartement – Espace Images Vevey From 14 December 2021 (opening at 6pm) to 30 January 2022, as part of L Appartement - Espace Images Vevey, Sara Bastai, the first winner of the Images Vevey x ECAL Prize, will exhibit her Master s degree project in Photography, completed in 2021. The Images Vevey x ECAL Prize was created in 2021 and strengthens the collaboration between the two institutions. Its aim is to offer a first exhibition experience to a student graduating from the ECAL s Bachelor s or Master s degree in photography. The winning work is presented in the form of a monographic exhibition by Images Vevey on the occasion of its biennial or in its permanent space. Sara Bastai s project, "RAM_2.0" is the result of her collaboration with an artificial intelligence. By submitting the hundreds of photographs contained in her smartphone to AI, the latter analyses the images and describes what it perceives in them. Sara Bastai then creates new settings based on the captions generated. A dialogue between the artist and the machine is established to explore the notion of memory through the eyes of technology. She has specifically adapted her project for the rooms of L Appartement - Espace Images Vevey. In the lounge of L Appartement, Maxime Guyon, a graduate of ECAL s Bachelor of Photography programme, also presents a series of images from his book "Aircraft - The New Anatomy", published by Lars Müller Publishers.DATESOpening reception Tuesday 14 December at 6pm Exhibition From 14 December 2021 to 30 January 2022 Wednesday to Sunday From 2pm to 6pm Free accessADDRESSL Appartement – Espace Images Vevey Vevey CFF station www.images.ch/en/lappartement_programmeARTISTSara Bastai

ECAL presents "Time to Move" at De Mains de Maîtres, Luxemburg,20–28.11.2021,19 Liberté, Luxemburg At the end of 2020, UNESCO inscribed the craftsmanship of mechanical watchmaking and mechanical arts on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Always ahead of its time, ECAL has long been highlighting projects based on these age-old crafts through original creations produced as part of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship. The De Mains de Maîtres Biennial from 20 to 28 November was the perfect opportunity to pay tribute to craftsmanship by presenting a selection of the best projects designed over the last ten years by students in the programme. The selection thus features modernised music boxes for the Swiss company Reuge; clocks in the form of kinetic sculptures that take the shape of a racing car or a hot-air balloon developed with Jura-based manufacture L Epée 1839; two unique pieces created at Mec Art in Sainte-Croix (a true watchmaking capital of Switzerland), one of which illustrates the harmony between the three mechanical arts typical of the region (watches, automatons and music boxes) and the other offers a play of colours based on the optical illusion of Japanese professor Akiyoshi Kitaoka. The works on display also include a series of wall and table clocks, whose marble from the Italian Marsotto manufacture creates a dichotomy between the majesty of the stone and the lightness of the movement. ECAL celebrates its 200th anniversary (1821-2021),01.09.2021–30.04.2022,Various locations To mark this 200th anniversary, we are pleased to invite you to a varied programme of activities and events in Switzerland and internationally, highlighting contemporary issues and themes that lie at the core of ECAL s various disciplines, thus offering a reflection on the contribution of art and design to society. ECAL is delighted to celebrate its 200th anniversary (1821-2021)! In 1821, a decree of the Grand Council of the Canton of Vaud formalised the opening of the Ecole cantonale de dessin, housed in Cité-Devant near the Cathedral in Lausanne. Twenty years later, the school integrated the newly built Musée Arlaud, located in the city centre and which also bears the name of the first director of both institutions, Marc-Louis Arlaud. For almost 150 years, the establishment has had many personalities as directors, moved to various locations in the region and had different names, before finally settling on Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne in 1986. Since then, the acronym ECAL has become popular as the reputation of the institution has grown, and it is now considered one of the best art and design schools in the world thanks to the countless successes of its teaching staff, students and alumni. To mark this 200th anniversary, we are pleased to invite you to a varied programme of activities and events in Switzerland and internationally, highlighting contemporary issues and themes that lie at the core of ECAL s various disciplines, thus offering a reflection on the contribution of art and design to society. ECAL x MEHARI EDEN The 2CV Méhari Club Cassis has developed an electric version of the iconic Citroën released in 1968 : the EDEN. From its inception, this car was designed for summer sports and leisure activity. Our current renewed interest in outdoor activities together with electric technology makes this car particularly attractive. With this in mind, the 2nd-year BA students in Industrial Design, under the direction of Stéphane Halmaï-Voisard, Head of Programme, and designer Elric Petit, showcase a series of accessories for tomorrow s electric Méhari. A genuine “LEGO car”, the Méhari lent itself perfectly to being reinvented by ECAL s students : a steering wheel with a built-in Bluetooth speaker, a rowboat doubling as a roof for the ride towards your favourite boating spot, practical surfboard and bike racks, a ready-to-use picnic set hidden in the tailgate, a waterproof roof cover made from banana plants, or the backrest of the rear seat that converts into a side table are just some of products on display.

Following the method of carefully observing our daily routines to identify unique needs and then creating intuitive and practical products, the Bachelor of Industrial Design students imagined a collection of clever furniture and household accessories to help organise our daily lives, under the guidance of designer Michel Charlot. As an important part of the development of MUJI products is based on detailed photographic studies in people s homes, the students were invited to follow the same process by documenting the spontaneous state of their own homes and other people s environments in order to reveal how they interact with the products, and to identify how the objects are used as direct inspiration for their design.

Housed within the museum s former 20th Century Gallery, this newly curated space brings together leading design objects alongside the first redisplay of V&A s celebrated "Rapid Response Collecting" programme since its founding in 2014. As part of the gallery, new acquisitions will go on display, including the ECAL Digital Market project by ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. “We are delighted to bring the ECAL Digital Market project into the V&As collection of digital and product design,” says Corinna Gardner, Senior Curator of Design and Digital at the V&A. “We have an established history of acquiring 3D printed designs and this project has the ability to speak to the future of this exciting discipline.” In partnership with the 3D printing company Formlabs, the idea of this project is to present digital manufacturing as an industrial production tool thanks to a print farm composed of numerous machines printing the same pieces simultaneously. Imagined by Camille Blin, Head of the Master Product Design, and Christophe Guberan, ECAL tutor, ECAL Digital Market offers functional and well-designed everyday objects, created by Master Product Design students as well as by a selection of ECAL-related designers (faculty members and alumni). Digital files of the objects can also be purchased online: www.ecal-digital-market.ch As part of the “Automation & Labour” thematic within the exhibition at the V&A, ECAL Digital Market was initially created for the Milan Design Week 2018. After its success in Italy, the project was presented at the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, at CIBONE Tokyo and already at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London. “We first brought this project to the V&A as part part of a London Design Festival display,” says Johanna Agerman Ross, Curator of Furniture and Product Design at the V&A. “It s great to see the work of both early career and established designers now joining the collection and fitting that it s now featured in the new Design 1900-Now gallery.” For ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos: “It is very rewarding for both teachers and students to see their work become part of such a prestigious museum collection. It confirms us in our choices and motivates us to push the boundaries even further.“ Victoria and Albert Museum Cromwell Road London, SW7 2RL www.vam.ac.uk

On the occasion of the reopening of the Maison de Rousseau et de la Littérature (MRL) in Geneva on April 21, 2021, students of the ECAL/HEAD (Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne/Haute école d art et de design Genève) Master s degree in Cinema are presenting a series of films as part of the Parcours Rousseau, which was designed by the Zurich architect Tristan Kobler of the Holzer Kobler office and co-written by two Rousseau specialists - Martin Rueff and Guillaume Chenevière. This journey perpetuates and updates the thought of the famous Swiss philosopher, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, by confronting it with the challenges of our time: education, nature and environment, secularism, citizenship, happiness. From September 2020 to January 2021, fifteen students of the ECAL/HEAD Master of Cinema - five in Directing, three in Scriptwriting, four in Sound, three in Editing - have taken up the major challenge of bringing together in a coherent way the historical and literary dimension of Jean-Jacques Rousseau with a personal and creative approach through filmic objects (documentary, fiction, montage film, archive film...). Each participant took part in the conception, direction and post-production of the films - mixing teams and roles (direction, editing, sound, script...). Eleven works are thus to be discovered within the framework of the course.

ECAL Master Fine Arts Symposium,23.03.2021,Online, Zoom ECAL Master Fine Arts Symposium: "Frantz Fanon s Critical Legacy : From the Alienation of the Individual to the Emancipation of Practices" Psychiatrist, essayist, theorist, and Algerian independence activist, Frantz Fanon (born in Fort-de-France in 1925, died in Bethesda in 1961) is a major figure of anti-colonial theory. From the decolonisation of the self, developed in "Black Skin, White Masks", to the use of violence in "The Wretched of The Earth", he fought against the conditions of a subaltern existence to go beyond race and colonial systems. The symposium seeks to open a conversational space, taking up Fanon s attitude of refusal to consider contemporary art practices, structures, and theories. In an effort to question the structures of contemporary society and the artistic field, lecturers share tools to become “conscious of [our] unconscious”, asking if the consciousness of structures instigates a renewal of thoughts and forms. The three conversation sessions are oriented around theories (counter-narratives), practices (regarding artists production), and means of action (by creating spaces, time and methodologies). 10:15am Introduction Stéphanie Moisdon, Head of Master Fine Arts 10:30am – 12pm Counter-narratives • Slavs and Tatars, artists collective 1:30pm – 3:30pm The Politics of Images • Noémi Michel, senior lecturer and researcher in Political Theory, UNIGE • Deborah Joyce Holman, artist and curator, founder of the art space 1.1, associate director at Auto Italia 4pm – 6pm Reparation and Means of Action • Kader Attia, artist and founder of La Colonie • Françoise Vergès, political scientist and feminist activist, founder of the association “Décoloniser les arts”.
