Image Creation BA1S2 – Insta Books

Image Creation BA1S2 – Insta Books In the age of social media, Instagram has become a true space for graphic experimentation. This semester, first-year Graphic Design students created a printed edition of at least 100 pages, exploring the question: what does it mean to design for Instagram? Through this investigation, they examined the platform s visual codes, its attention-driven dynamics, and the graphic forms it inspires. Each project reflects on how these creations can be translated, extended, or reinterpreted in the digital space. Balancing printed matter and online presence, these works outline new ways of inhabiting both images and networks.

Paolo Moretti appointed head of the ECAL Cinema Department Article
Paolo Moretti appointed head of the ECAL Cinema Department

Paolo Moretti appointed head of the ECAL Cinema Department As of September 1, 2022, Paolo Moretti will become the new head of the Cinema Department at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. Director and programmer of festivals, notably of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs at the Cannes Film Festival, Paolo Moretti will take over the responsibility of the Cinema Department of ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne in September 2022. He will succeed Pauline Gygax as head of the Bachelor Cinema program and Lionel Baier for the Master Cinema program (co-directed by HEAD Geneva). "I am above all very grateful to ECAL for offering me this opportunity. I am excited to continue the work initiated by Lionel Baier, then Pauline Gygax and to confront myself with a new dimension of the transmission of the codes and languages of contemporary cinema", says Paolo Moretti. After studying modern literature, between 2001 and 2008, Paolo Moretti worked for several film festivals and institutions in Europe, including the Centre Pompidou, the Filmoteca Española, the Cinemateca Portuguesa, the Leeds Film Festival and Cinéma du Réel. From 2008 to 2011, he was assistant to the director and programming advisor at the Venice Film Festival. In 2012 and 2013, he is a programming advisor for the Rome Film Festival (CinemaXXI). Since 2012, he has been collaborating with the Visions du Réel festival (Nyon), first as a member of the selection committee (2012-2017), then as an artistic advisor. From 2012 to 2018, he is also a member of the selection committee of FIDMarseille. He is the associate producer of the American independent feature film L for Leisure by Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn, presented at the Rotterdam Film Festival in 2014. Between 2014 and 2020, he works as a director of the La Roche-sur-Yon International Film Festival and of the art house cinema Le Concorde. Between 2018 and 2022, he is the general delegate of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs at the Cannes Film Festival. Since 2020, he has been the director of the art house cinema Les Cinémas du Grütli in Geneva, where he will be able to continue to carry out his mission in conjunction with ECAL, thanks to a redistribution of tasks, notably administrative, of the Geneva institution. "Paolo Moretti has an exceptional network and a rich and varied international experience, punctuated by numerous successes. Through his desire to constantly highlight the films of young talent, he has established himself over time as a valuable and privileged interlocutor for filmmakers and the industry. I am sure that his approach as an outstanding facilitator will suit our students perfectly and will lead them to progress even further and to surpass themselves", says Alexis Georgacopoulos, ECAL Director. For the Bachelor Cinema program, Paolo Moretti will replace Pauline Gygax - who will keep a part of her teaching at ECAL, but will concentrate primarily on her activity as a producer, the intensity of which obliges her to reduce her workload within the Cinema Department. As for Lionel Baier, co-director of the Master Cinema program, he will continue his career as a director, while also maintaining a teaching schedule at the Lausanne school. ECAL would like to take this opportunity to thank them for all their work and for having contributed to the fact that its film courses are considered among the best internationally. Higurashi book launch Project
Higurashi book launch

Higurashi book launch In Summer 2019, thirteen students from the ECAL Master s in Photography programme supervised by Milo Keller travelled to Japan to work on thirteen individual projects in collaboration with Japanese photographer Taisuke Koyama within the framework of the Tokyo Photographic Research project. The students artworks range from still and moving images to computer-generated photographic visuals and explore multiple facets of the Japanese megalopolis which is, once again, undergoing major transformation in preparation for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Some projects focus on aspects specific to the city, from the destruction of small residential houses to the construction of the gigantic Olympic Village and the conquest of new territories by the sea. Other works investigate distinctive Japanese culture such as home-cooked food, the appetite for designing humanoid robots, the blending of child and adult worlds in manga, pachinko gambling, the reinvention of ikebana and young girls as ‘rising stars. Finally, the works seek to visually represent more abstract concepts such as loneliness, emptiness and intimacy in a city that, due to its density, size and power, offers a challenging, fascinating and extremely stimulating complexity to the eyes of the thirteen photographers. Higurashi has been presented at Espace Commines in Paris in November 2021, inside the exhibition Automated Photography during Paris Photo. On the occasion of the reopening of the Maison de Rousseau et de la Littérature (MRL) in Geneva on April 21, 2021, students of the ECAL/HEAD (Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne/Haute école d art et de design Genève) Master s degree in Cinema are presenting a series of films as part of the Parcours Rousseau, which was designed by the Zurich architect Tristan Kobler of the Holzer Kobler office and co-written by two Rousseau specialists - Martin Rueff and Guillaume Chenevière. This journey perpetuates and updates the thought of the famous Swiss philosopher, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, by confronting it with the challenges of our time: education, nature and environment, secularism, citizenship, happiness. From September 2020 to January 2021, fifteen students of the ECAL/HEAD Master of Cinema - five in Directing, three in Scriptwriting, four in Sound, three in Editing - have taken up the major challenge of bringing together in a coherent way the historical and literary dimension of Jean-Jacques Rousseau with a personal and creative approach through filmic objects (documentary, fiction, montage film, archive film...). Each participant took part in the conception, direction and post-production of the films - mixing teams and roles (direction, editing, sound, script...). Eleven works are thus to be discovered within the framework of the course. ECAL book 2018 Project
ECAL book 2018

ECAL book 2018 To be a filmmaker in 2018 is to be a bit of a spiritualist. The rarefaction of the film object, humble, palpable, which weighs in the hand, is a fact. Its historical place of diffusion, the theatre, is also disappearing in Europe. Even DVDs and USB keys are relics of yesterday s world. Modern computers don t care about the ports where these objects could drop anchor. There is hardly any material trace of the cinematographic creation anymore. Some data stored on a cloud on the other side of the world, wind in a cloud. The filmmaker s job is therefore to produce the invisible for nomadic souls, not to say wandering souls, in a bus in Tokyo or a café in Denver. It is to speak to the spirits. There is no nostalgia in this observation of the times, just the desire to adapt to the Zeitgeist. At ECAL, we love objects. Like Georges Perec, who was "all about the language that surrounds things, about what s underneath, about everything that feeds them, about everything that s injected into them. Because it is a language, the cinema is matter. It agglomerates what we are, we the creators, we the spectators, in a communion of thought. To testify to this encounter, an object was needed. And the most beautiful of all: a book. To say what nourishes us, but also what we give to eat. The encounters, the essays, the filming, the trips, the debates that make up the living and vibrant body of our school. The one that asks the only question that matters: for whom are we doing what? May this book be the Ouija board that allows us to communicate with the spirits, here and elsewhere, today and tomorrow. Many thanks to Rachel Noël, coordinator of the ECAL s Cinema Department, initiator and curator of this first volume. And to all the contributors. Lionel Baier / Head of the Film Department

Infolio Editions. «ECAL Graphic Design» book and exhibition Event
«ECAL Graphic Design» book and exhibition

«ECAL Graphic Design» book and exhibition,03.03–08.04.2016,Gallery l elac, ECAL On the occasion of the release of the “ECAL Graphic Design” book published by JRP|Ringier, ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne presents from 4th March to 8th April at the Gallery l elac (opening on Thursday 3rd March 2016 from 6pm to 8pm) an exhibition of projects realised by students of the Bachelor Graphic Design and the Master Art Direction. In relation with this event, François Rappo, Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction Professor, will give a lecture titled “Next” on Thursday 24th March 2016 at 6pm in the IKEA Auditorium, ECAL. IMAGES HD ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has long been recognised as a world reference in terms of graphic design. Be it in designing books, catalogues, magazines or posters, typography or digital projects, ECAL students are able to embrace all fields of this discipline and to masterfully perform a wide variety of assignments. This success is largely based on a policy of workshops allowing them to learn from the best Swiss or international graphic designers directly on the school premises. With this in mind, ECAL has had the good fortune of welcoming in recent years leading figures such as Ludovic Balland, Bibliothèque, Mirko Borsche, Thomas Buxo, Veronica Ditting, Europa, Johann Kauth, Jürg Lehni, Ari Marcopoulos, Maximage, Young Na Kim, NORM, OK-RM, Brian Roettinger, Hansje van Halem, Cornel Windlin and Job Wouters aka Letman. The exhibition and book “ECAL Graphic Design” largely retraces projects conducted in the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses over the past five years in the framework of these visits, but also of other courses which have contributed to the School s reputation. Edited by the Gavillet & Rust studio, the book revolves around a long succession of tracking shots in which projects are not classified in categories, but organised by colour. The exhibition design orchestrated by Adrien Rovero is based on the same concept, allowing a total flexibility of the exhibition. Exhibition "ECAL Graphic Design" Exhibition from 4th March to 8th April 2016, Wednesday to Friday, 1pm to 5pm. Closed from 25th March to 5th April 2016. A «teaser» version of the exhibition is presented at the Musée des beaux-arts du Locle until the 29th of May 2016. The Blick Book Project
The Blick Book

Klaus Stille – The Blick Book The absurd articles that give me my inspiration for this publication come from the newspaper Blick am Abend . A visual odyssey through the world s perpetual absurdity. At the same time, an image of our modern society emerges. Newspapers no longer serve solely to convey information, but also to give the reader a certain type of entertainment. And so it comes about that we are confronted with a load of rubbish every day. The diary helps me to digest and process this trash. As with the daily news, I had to produce on a daily basis. This is also about the working process, and work experience. Fun factor 100%. The absurd articles that give me my inspiration for this publication come from the newspaper Blick am Abend. Exhibition and book Vertiginous Parallels Project
Exhibition and book Vertiginous Parallels

Exhibition and book Vertiginous Parallels From November 14 to December 4, 2014, Elac Gallery presents Vertige des correspondances (Vertiginous parallels), an exhibition by ECAL s Fine Arts Master students, while ECAL launches an eponymous publication. The show and the book are the twofold outcome of a research project directed by Julien Fronsacq with the support of HES-SO/University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland. The works of Charles Blanc-Gatti (1890-1966) are largely unknown. In his search for synesthetic harmony, this musicalist painter also played with a loss of spatial markers. These two sides of Blanc-Gatti s art are explored in this project, through the relationship the artist entertained with the alpine space. The show presents a novel selection of artworks and documents by Charles Blanc-Gatti, together with works by student-researchers Jérôme Baccaglio, Anaïs Defago, Arthur Fouray, Julien Gremaud, Marine Julié, Emanuele Marcuccio, Rubén Valdez and Linda Voorwinde. Vertiginous Parallels is also a bilingual (FR/EN) publication comprising 188 pages with 85 reproductions from Blanc-Gatti s archives. Published by ECAL and distributed by Presses du réel, the book is edited by Julien Fronsacq in collaboration with Lucile Dupraz, with graphic design by Marietta Eugster and Teo Schifferli, and photographs by Jonas Marguet. Experts from various fields have contributed essays, including the music specialist Maxime Guitton, the art historian and curator Gallien Déjean, the cinema historian Teresa Castro, the artist and historian of medicine Jelena Martinovic, and the art historian and modern danse specialist Sarah Burkhalter. Documents and works by Charles Blanc-Gatti courtesy the Swiss Film Archive, the Swiss Institute for Art Research (SIK-ISEA) and the Cantonal Museum of Fine Arts in Lausanne.

Die Nacktwanderer Project
Die Nacktwanderer

Die Nacktwanderer When I saw a nudist beach for the first time last summer, I immediately knew  that I had to deal with this group nudity in my diploma. “Naked hiking” is a modern split-off from which even primal naturists take distance; nudity in public provokes.  Nudity and Nature have always been big subjects in art. Inspired by the romantic paintings I was hunting for photographs which feature this tension between romantic nature and disturbing contemporary elements – an opposition between nature and culture. Exhibition and book "Ecal Photography"

Exhibition and book "Ecal Photography" The exhibition offers a selection of works produced by 58 young talents during their Photography Bachelor curriculum at ECAL. All these images were chosen by exhibition curator Nathalie Herschdorfer, who has developed several internationally acclaimed projects around emerging photography, as well as by Milo Keller, head of the Photography programme at ECAL, and Alexis Georgacopoulos, ECAL director. The scenography of the exhibition is created especially by Swiss designer Adrien Rovero. The “ECAL Photography” book (296 pages, 385 images) supports this event. This book is produced by art publishers Hatje Cantz, with a worldwide reputation for their catalogue of publications on photography. An art school is an image factory. New generations of artists are constantly emerging, joining the marathon of exhibitions and publications from the very first years of their creative lives. In this context, the art school has become a particularly attractive place for ambitious young artists.  This book features a selection of works by photography students from one of the world s top art universities: ECAL, in Lausanne, Switzerland, an institution commited to training artists, graphic designers, industrial designers, typographers, filmmakers, interaction designers, and photographers. Here, students create freely, question the traditional genres, explore new territories, and experiment with and beyond their media. Exhibition «Ring Bell Twice» by John M Armleder Event
Exhibition «Ring Bell Twice» by John M Armleder
