ECAL won the award for the best exhibition in Milan A l issue du Salon international du meuble de Milan 2014, l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne a été couronnée par le Milano Design Award, qui récompense la meilleure exposition de la manifestation. Ce prix a été attribué à l ECAL pour «Delirious Home» présentée au Spazio Orso 16 à Milan. Cette exposition met en scène une série d objets qui proposent une interprétation ludique du concept de «maison intelligente». Ils ont été réalisés par les étudiants en Bachelor Design Industriel et en Media & Interaction Design de l ECAL. Un projet dirigé par Alain Bellet et Chris Kabel. L exposition « Delirious Home » présente ainsi avec humour et originalité une sélection de projets qui résultent d une collaboration fructueuse entre étudiants Bachelor de l ECAL en Design Industriel et en Media & Interaction Design. Durant tout un semestre, les étudiants ont travaillé en groupes pour nous concocter de sympathiques miroirs qui réfléchissent notre image uniquement lorsqu on les regarde, des cactus hypersensibles qui apprécient lorsqu on les caresse avec douceur, un duo de fauteuils qui vous invite à un « tête-à-tête » dynamique et participatif, une série de cloches alimentaires qui célèbrent les moments de dégustation grâce à des sons harmonieux lors de leur ouverture, une famille de contenants qui défient les lois de la gravité, une horloge qui imite vos gestes, un rideau automatisé très serviable, un ventilateur qui amplifie votre propre souffle et une cuillère capable de suivre une tasse où qu elle aille. ECAL Milan 2014: ECAL & Camper present the film "Training",09.04.2014,Cinema Arlecchino, Milan For the Milan International Furniture Fair 2014, Camper, the Majorcan shoe brand, and the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne present an exceptional multidisciplinary project at the Arlecchino Cinema on Wednesday 9 April (from 9 pm to midnight). Students of the Master Product Design have made a shop, under the supervision of Bethan Laura Wood, which has been used as the set for “Training”, a short film directed by Jan Czarlewski, a graduate of the ECAL Bachelor Cinema. Images HD The projection of this fiction film is accompanied by a documentary by Arthur Touchais, who is also a graduate of the Bachelor Cinema. All communication materials for this event (graphic design and photography) have been undertaken by former students of ECAL. “ The basic idea was to create a full-size Camper shop in the Studio Cinema of ECAL,and shoot a short film,” explains Ramón Úbeda, the person in charge of the project at Camper. “We wanted this project to be multidisciplinary and for it to bring together many of the different skills taught at the ECAL, especially the Cinema option, that makes this school a unique training centre of its kind.” The first stage was having the students of the Master Product Design create a mock-up of a shop. Under the supervision of the British designer Bethan Laura Wood, they have created an original set, an authentic design piece with two-way mirrors – a special effect that is vital to the script – and shaped like a huge shoe box. “ What is there to film in a Camper shop? To discover the film s concept we were inspired by the company philosophy: humour and jokiness”, reveals Jan Czarlewski, director of this short film lasting around 12 minutes. With that in mind, the film could only be a comedy. The story is about the first day at work of a young stammering, awkward and stressed salesman, who is trained by the shop manager, who is himself an anxious person… This short fictional piece is accompanied by a documentary by Arthur Touchais, narrating the process of putting together the whole project, from making the shop to creating the communication materials, done by Romain Collaud, graduate of the Bachelor in Graphic Design at the ECAL. ECAL Milano 2014: «Avant-garde Retro» with Cassina,08–13.04.2014,Showroom Cassina, via Durini 16, Milan During the Milan International Furniture Fair from 8 to 13 April 2014, Cassina presents a selection of projects by ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne at its showroom in via Durini 16. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Maralunga sofa, designed for the Italian brand by Vico Magistretti, the students from the Master Product Design programme have developed new sofa projects based on this icon s chassis. The project was directed by Alexis Georgacopoulos and Tomas Kral. Images HD As a tribute to the 40th anniversary of Maralunga sofa, Cassina challenged 20 international sudents from the ECAL Master Product Design programme to design the sofa of the future starting from the Maralunga chassis. The brief? Simple, comfort first and foremost. The students got their initial inspiration for the project during a visit to the Cassina factory in Meda where they were able to get a feel for the history of the brand and observe production techniques. Following this visit, various workshops with the ECAL Director, Alexis Georgacopoulos, and the designer Tomas Kral were organised, as well as two analysis meetings with the Cassina R&D Centre, which resulted in 20 integrated projects. The work entailed a semester of study, research and development and led to some surprising proposals. During the Milan International Furnitue Fair 2014, Cassina will showcase the two winning prototypes, one by Qiyun Deng, a Chinese girl born in 1983, and the other by Jin Eum, a Korean girl born in 1987, together with models chosen from 6 other projects. A special display dedicated to the world of Maralunga will also on show at the historic Cassina showroom in Milan. The students demonstrate their artful mastery of electronics, mechanics and interaction, developing a new kind of esthetic which goes further than just a formal approach,” explain Alain Bellet and Chris Kabel, the heads of the project. The “Delirious Home” exhibition presents with humour and originality a selection of projects arising from fruitful collaborations between Bachelor students in Industrial Design and Media & Interaction Design at the ECAL. For one semester, students worked in groups to concoct friendly mirrors that reflect only our image when we look at them: hypersensitive cactuses that like it when we give them a caress, two armchairs that invite you to enjoy a lively and meaningful “tête-à-tête”, a series of food domes that celebrate taste sensations with mellow sounds when they re opened, a group of containers that defies the laws of gravity, a clock that imitates your gestures, a very accommodating curtain, a fan that amplifies your breath, and a spoon able to follow a cup wherever it goes. Exhibition and book "Ecal Photography" The exhibition offers a selection of works produced by 58 young talents during their Photography Bachelor curriculum at ECAL. All these images were chosen by exhibition curator Nathalie Herschdorfer, who has developed several internationally acclaimed projects around emerging photography, as well as by Milo Keller, head of the Photography programme at ECAL, and Alexis Georgacopoulos, ECAL director. The scenography of the exhibition is created especially by Swiss designer Adrien Rovero. The “ECAL Photography” book (296 pages, 385 images) supports this event. This book is produced by art publishers Hatje Cantz, with a worldwide reputation for their catalogue of publications on photography. An art school is an image factory. New generations of artists are constantly emerging, joining the marathon of exhibitions and publications from the very first years of their creative lives. In this context, the art school has become a particularly attractive place for ambitious young artists. This book features a selection of works by photography students from one of the world s top art universities: ECAL, in Lausanne, Switzerland, an institution commited to training artists, graphic designers, industrial designers, typographers, filmmakers, interaction designers, and photographers. Here, students create freely, question the traditional genres, explore new territories, and experiment with and beyond their media. ECAL at the Design Days Dubai,17–21.03.2014,Dubai Pour sa seconde participation aux Design Days Dubaï (DDD) du 17 au 21 mars 2014, l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne est fière de présenter un projet de diplôme 2013 en Bachelor Media & Interaction Design réalisé par Benjamin Muzzin. «Full Turn» permet, grâce au mouvement rotatif de deux écrans dos à dos, de créer une séquence animée tridimensionnelle qui peut être vue à 360 degrés. En raison de la persistance rétinienne, les formes qui apparaissent sur les écrans se transforment en sculptures lumineuses cinétiques. Design Days Dubaï (DDD) est un point de rencontre annuel majeur et un catalyseur pour la scène du design régionale. Né à Madrid en 1974, Jaime Hayon est un artiste-designer qui compte parmi les 100 créateurs les plus importants de notre époque selon le Time Magazine. Il a également été classé par Wallpaper* comme l un des créateurs les plus influents de la dernière décennie. Avec des bureaux en Italie et en Espagne, Jaime Hayon cherche sans cesse à trouver des défis et de nouvelles perspectives entre art, décoration d intérieur et design industriel. Il travaille pour des entreprises comme Baccarat, Camper, Established & Sons, Fritz Hansen, Lladró ou encore Magis.
ECAL and SIGG at ISPO,26–29.01.2014,Munich 16 students of the Master Product Design at the ECAL/University of art and design Lausanne were asked to develop lunch boxes, food containers and accessories with SIGG s identity. Folllowing a workshop with french designer Michel Charlot, a selection of this projects is presentend on the occasion of the ISPO Munich (the international main exhibition for sport business) from 26 to 29 January 2014 (Pictures HD). The collaboration ECAL/SIGG started fruitfully in 2013. Following recent trend surveys showing that more and more people bring food to their workplace, students from the Master in Product Design were asked to develop lunch boxes, food containers and accessories in relation to European, Asian and American cultures whilst considering SIGG s identity. After receiving 16 strong concepts, SIGG will now evaluate their feasibility, as well as their marketability, to include one or the other on-the-go design proposals into the future product portfolio. ECAL and Vacheron Constantin present a special installation for the SIHH,20–24.01.2014,SIHH, Palexpo A l occasion de la 24e édition du Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie (SIHH) qui se tient à Genève du 20 au 24 janvier 2014, l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne a créé pour la manufacture horlogère Vacheron Constantin, qui soutient le Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship, une installation spéciale nommée «The Minute Repeater». Cette installation est le fruit d un travail de recherche dirigé à l ECAL par Vincent Jacquier, responsable du Département Communication Visuelle, et par Alain Bellet, responsable du Bachelor Media & Interaction Design. Cette recherche, qui associe des étudiants du Bachelor en Media & Interaction Design et de celui en Design Industriel, a permis de développer sur le stand de la manufacture genevoise, un dispositif de douze écrans qui révèle d une manière onirique le Calibre 1731 de Vacheron Constantin. Grâce à des animations virtuelles, dévoilées sur chaque écran par la magie de loupes, l ECAL propose son interprétation de ce mouvement à répétition minutes, connu pour être le plus plat du marché. Exhibition of 3 ECAL Bachelor Photography graduates,15.01–03.02.2014,Théâtre de Vidy, Lausanne Du 16 janvier au 3 février 2014 (vernissage le mercredi 15 janvier à 18h30), le Théâtre de Vidy-Lausanne présente une proposition de Milo Keller, responsable du Bachelor en Photographie de l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne. «Cherry Queen» par Charlotte Krieger, 2013, 10min44s Ce projet tente d articuler la vie de ma cousine Sabrina entre les Etats-Unis où elle est née et la Suisse où elle étudie. Le film se concentre sur des questions de beauté, de fantasme et de déracinement. Suivre Sabrina m a permis de construire une tension entre documentaire et fiction, qui accentue le jeu que Sabrina entretenait parfois avec la caméra. En établissant une relation intime avec mon sujet, j ai tenté de retranscrire l aspect transitoire, d attente, dont son quotidien est imprégné. La construction idéale de Sabrina, d après des stéréotypes de beauté et de jeunesse, oscillant entre contrôle et égarement, me fascine. «High» par Axel Crettenand, 2013, 9min58s L image de la montagne est l une des plus puissantes et des plus fécondes dans l histoire de la représentation de la nature. Elle semble ne laisser personne indifférent ; on s y retire, on s y purifie et on s y élève, ou alors on y perd l esprit et on tombe au bas d une falaise, la bouche écumante et les yeux fous. Néanmoins, ayant grandi dans les montagnes suisses, je les ressens différemment. L enjeu de mon travail, un court-métrage d une dizaine de minutes, fut donc de bousculer cette épaisse métaphysique du regard et de montrer les Alpes sous un jour nouveau. «Limbo» par Lisa Roehrich, 2010, 14min07s «Limbo» est un projet réalisé au Liban au mois de mai 2010. Il se compose de 14 portraits filmés à la manière des «screentest» d Andy Warhol. Les protagonistes des portraits sont de jeunes libanais tous issus d environnements sociaux différents. Je les ai rencontrés en me baladant à travers le pays. Ma démarche, lors de la prise de vue, consistait à les mettre suffisamment à l aise pour qu ils puissent eux-mêmes décider de la façon dont ils désiraient se représenter. Ces 14 jeunes ont en commun le vécu de la guerre de 2006 sans pour autant avoir un ressenti identique par rapport aux conflits. Second prize for ECAL at imm Cologne Dans le cadre du salon international du meuble imm Cologne (du 13 au 19 janvier 2014), Yann Mathys (né à Genève en 1989) a obtenu le 2e prix du prestigieux D3 Contest pour son travail de diplôme Bachelor Design Industriel réalisé en 2013 à l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne. Pour ce concours, les organisateurs ont reçu près de 700 projets issus de plus d une quarantaine de pays. Reverso by ECAL/Yann Mathys Reverso est un système de séparation d espace interactif qui incite au touché. La trame qui a été découpée puis étirée permet de «dessiner» en retournant les écailles, elles réagissent différemment à la lumière selon leur position. Reverso peut être produit en différents formats, il est muni d un système de montage réglable, ce qui lui permet de s adapter à différentes situations. Ce projet est l aboutissement d une recherche sur le papier. Démarche que j ai appréciée car au fil de l avancement de mes expériences et constats j ai pu découvrir de nouvelles possibilités d applications de ce matériau. http://yannmathys.com

ECAL Graduate awarded by Prestigious Bourse Leenaards La Fondation Leenaards, active dans les cantons de Vaud et de Genève, favorise l essor artistique de cette région en consacrant notamment, chaque année, un demi-million de francs à l attribution de bourses et de prix culturels. Huit bourses d une valeur de CHF 50 000.- permettront à des artistes et créateurs de cette région de réaliser des projets d envergure qui contribueront à l épanouissement de leur talent., parmi eux Christophe Guberan, diplômé de l ECAL en Bachelor Design Industriel en 2012. Christophe Guberan «Des objets qui sont le fruit d expérimentations à partir de simples matières et d observations», c est avec cette formule que le designer industriel de 28 ans Christophe Guberan conçoit les possibilités d interaction et d esthétiques variables de ses créations. Cette formule, il la cultive d abord dans sa formation professionnelle de dessinateur-architecte terminée en 2006, s initiant ainsi aux vécus des formes et des espaces. A partir de 2008, préférant une réalisation et une conceptualisation d objets à une échelle plus réduite, il réoriente son parcours avec un bachelor en design industriel à l ECAL, qu il termine en 2012. Pendant ces années, un premier objet est produit chez Alessi et ensuite présenté au Salon international du meuble de Milan. Dans la foulée, Christophe Guberan participe à un workshop autour du bambou au National Institute of Design à Ahmedabad, en Inde, et effectue un stage au Chocolate Centre of Excellence de Nestlé. Il développe également le projet Hydro-Fold, qui vise à explorer les propriétés du papier et plus particulièrement la façon dont un liquide peut modifier sa structure, permettant de passer de la 2D à la 3D et de créer des volumes en quelques minutes. Ce projet est exposé en 2012 au SaloneSatellite de Milan ainsi qu au festival Les Urbaines de Lausanne. Le caractère innovant de ce travail attire notamment l attention de l EPFL et du MIT Massachusetts Institute of Technology, qui l invitent à présenter ses recherches. Une année d assistanat à l ECAL donne l opportunité à Christophe Guberan de continuer son exploration des nombreux matériaux et des formes qui l inspirent dans ses créations. Outre un workshop sur le verre à Meisenthal, il présente une série de meubles collection Neil, au Festival Images de Vevey. Avec le Collectif Richoz-Clopath-Guberan, il est lauréat du concours Lausanne Jardins 2014. Invité par Erik Demaine, professeur au MIT, Christophe Guberan pourra, grâce au soutien de la Fondation Leenaards, se rendre à Boston pour continuer ses recherches sur Hydro-Fold. La possibilité d y travailler en équipe avec des ingénieurs, jointe à sa fascination pour les matériaux, devrait lui ouvrir de nouveaux horizons et marquer un tournant dans sa carrière de designer industriel.

Elle dirige actuellement le bureau d études pluridisciplinaire Made in Space à Los Angeles.
Ototo meets ECAL Sound production has never been more accessible, it s now possible to make music on everyday computers, smartphones and tablets. The processes that generate the sounds are invisible inside these black boxes, and the traditional link between the action and the result from acoustic instruments is lost to both the performer and audience. This workshop uses Ototo, a printed circuit board synthesiser developed by Dentaku to which conductive materials and sensors to quickly prototype sound interactions. With this as a starting point we will explore how we can represent sound as a physical processes, and create a large scale music making machine!

Vitrines ECAL/Hermès at Zürich,03.09–15.11.2013,Store Hermès Zürich As a result of a collaboration with Hermès (Switzerland), the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship of ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne conceived vitrine proposals for their Zürich store. Under the supervision of Head of department Nicolas Le Moigne, the aim of the workshop was to create 5 large and 9 small vitrines by developing different compositions around Hermès s annual theme of “A sporting Life”, while staying true to the brand s universe and design codes. Following a presentation of life-size mockups, one of the 10 propositions particularly seduced the jury of 3 brand managers. The “Silhouette” project by student Fabien Gerlier is conceived of different sculptural structures designed to present the objects from the Autumn-Winter collection. Caught in the beam of light of a projector, the objects create shadows which illustrate the “A sporting Life” theme. Thus a climber climbs a mountain created out of the shadow of an item of clothing while a dancer appears graciously due to the superposition of jewellery, a scarf and a belt. Combining simplicity and poetry, this idea was developed in all 5 of the store vitrines, creating different compositions, each one playful and artistic. Best short film for a graduate Master ECAL/HEAD at Locarno A l occasion du 66e Festival du film de Locarno 2013, Michele Pennetta (né en 1984 à Varèse en Italie, domicilié à Lausanne), diplômé du Master Cinéma ECAL/HEAD en 2010, a gagné le Pardino d Oro du meilleur court métrage suisse avec le documentaire « A iucata» ‘A iucata Un moyen métrage documentaire de Michele Pennetta, écrit avec Christian Tarabini et produit par Close Up Films. 38 minuti / 16:9 / 5.1 / v.o. siciliano Synopsis Au milieu des quartiers populaires de Catane, en Sicile, loin du contrôle des autorités, se cachent de nombreuses écuries de fortune. Une de celles-ci appartient à Concetto, dit le pharmacien. Personnage respecté voire même craint, il s est construit une renommée dans le monde des courses clandestines de chevaux. Chaque jour, avant le lever du soleil, Vittorio, son fils, se rend à l écurie afin de préparer leur cheval, Vito Portanova, pour l entraînement. Dans quelques jours aura lieu la course clandestine sur une rue déserte au pied de l Etna...
ECAL at the Locarno International Film Festival 2013,07–17.08.2013,Locarno A l occasion du 66e Festival international du film de Locarno (du 7 au 17 août 2013), l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne sera fortement représentée. Après avoir remporté quatre fois en cinq le prix du Meilleur court métrage suisse, l ECAL comptera sur un film de diplôme et trois films d anciens étudiants pour briller dans cette compétition. Quant à Blaise Harrison, diplômé en 2003, il défendra son nouveau film, «L Harmonie», dans la sélection «Cinéastes du Présent». Public Prize for an ECAL student at Design Parade 8 Après avoir déjà remporté dans ce cadre des prix en 2006, 2008, 2009, 2011 et 2012 (Adrien Rovero, Michel Charlot, Antoine Boudin, Brynjar Sigurdarson, Julie Richoz), l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne continue sa moisson à l occasion de Design Parade 8 (Festival international de design) présenté à la Villa Noailles (Hyères). Pour l édition 2013, Mugi Yamamoto (né en 1988 à Tokyo), diplômé en Bachelor Design Industriel depuis quelques jours, est lauréat du Prix du public. Outre Mugi Yamamoto, le jury avait sélectionné cinq autres écaliens (Sylvain Aebischer, Sarha Duquesne, Daniele Bortotto, Dimitri Bähler, Béatrice Durandard) parmi les 10 candidats en compétition. Ils ont été sélectionnés par un jury présidé par le designer Bertjan Pot. Les projets présentés par Mugi Yamamoto: Bio Composite A Lausanne, la terre a pour composante une glaise de très bonne qualité. Aussi, j ai choisi d utiliser ce matériau, polyvalent et fascinant, d en conserver les qualités écologiques et recyclables en mélangeant uniquement la terre locale à des éléments biodégradable sans avoir à les cuire. Pour trouver l assemblage optimal, j ai expérimenté plus d une cinquantaine de combinaisons composées de vingt-quatre éléments différents. Toutes ont été pressées dans le même moule, puis séchées à l air. Par la suite, j ai éprouvé leur résistance en exerçant une force de manière progressive sur chacune d entre elles, et en mesurant le poids au moment de l écroulement. J ai été surpris par la résistance du mélange final. L assise du tabouret possède une épaisseur de seulement 2 cm et cela est suffisant pour qu une personne puisse s asseoir, sans qu aucun écroulement ne survienne. La toile de jute qui est intégrée aux deux côtés du mélange possède plusieurs fonctions. Elle procure une sensation tactile plus agréable que la terre, elle permet de préserver la propreté de celui qui s assoit et apporte un supplément de résistance à la terre. Grâce à ce travail d expérimentation, ce projet m a permis de concevoir un nouveau dérivé de ce matériau bon marché, facile à produire, entièrement écologique et très stable. Gravity C est le résultat d un workshop d une semaine à l Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne (ECAL) sur le thème de la gravité. Cette lampe, inspirée des ready-made, est facile à monter et d une étonnante simplicité. Chaque pièce ou élément possède une double fonction: la batterie sert d ancre et d alimentation, le câble maintient le ballon à la batterie et transmet l énergie. Quant au ballon, il contient l hélium et agit comme un diffuseur ou un réflecteur de lumière. Hover Hover est un vase en céramique pour pivoines avec une base solide et un anneau élevée, qui permet de maintenir les fleurs dans la bonne position. L anneau est relié à la base avec un fil métallique, qui par sa couleur verte et son épaisseur se confond avec les tiges des pivoines. «ECAL Terroir» au Marché de Renens,27.04.2013,Place du Marché, Renens Le 27 avril 2013 dès 09h30, la Ville de Renens lance les animations musicales du marché du samedi avec la formation de jazzSwiss TriBe. A cette occasion, l ECAL présentera exceptionnellement son stand «ECAL Terroir», résultat d un travail surprenant entre étudiants en Master Design de Produit et artisans vaudois. La Ville de Renens et l ECAL sont heureux de s associer lors de la reprise des animations musicales du marché du samedi en présentant de façon exceptionnelle le stand aux couleurs de «ECAL Terroir». Quelque 15 produits ont été ainsi revisités par 16 étudiants de première année du Master Design de Produit. Les étudiants de 7 nationalités différentes sont partis à la découverte des artisans de la région et ont élaboré de nouveaux articles. Les résultats de ces rencontres sont détonants: bricelets provençaux, pâté au fromage de chèvre ou encore sushi de chocolat. Supervisés par le designer et responsable du programme Augustin Scott de Martinville, les étudiants de première année ont pu découvrir lors de cette démarche les savoir-faire de la région et se familiariser avec l exercice de la production en petite série. Ils vendront ainsi des produits du terroir revisités dans leur présentation et leurs emballages dans un stand spécialement conçu en collaboration avec les étudiants du Master Espaces et Communication de la HEAD Genève sous la conduite du designer Adrien Rovero. ECAL Conférence: Richard Hollis,23.04.2013,Auditoire IKEA, ECAL, 17h30 ECAL Conférence: Richard Hollis – Graphic designer, London Richard Hollis, Graphiste, Londres A l occasion de l exposition « Richard Hollis » réalisée par Emily King, historienne du graphisme, pour la Gallery Libby Sellers à Londres et présentée du 23 avril au 17 mai 2013 à l elac (galerie de l ECAL). Richard Hollis, né à Londres en 1934, s est imposé comme une figure majeure du graphisme anglo-saxon. Ses collaborations avec des artistes (Steve McQueen, Bridget Riley), des critiques d art (John Berger) et des institutions (la Whitechapel Art Gallery) furent l occasion de publications remarquables. Parmi ses nombreuses réalisations, on peut noter le livre « Swiss Graphic Design : The Origins and Growth of an International Style, 1920 – 1965 ».

Dan Walsh, Plasticien, New York Derrière des arrangements de pavés colorés dont les lignes courbes et les angles arrondis produisent une délicatesse étrange, le travail de Dan Walsh (né en 1960 à Philadelphie) est principalement axé sur la perception. Représenté par les galeries Paula Cooper à New York, Tschudi à Zuoz ou encore Xippas à Genève et Paris, il a eu des expositions monographiques notamment au PS1 à New York, à la Royal Academy à Londres et au Mamco à Genève.

ECAL Milano 2013: "The Iceland Whale Bone Project",09–14.04.2013,Spazio Orso 16, Milan “The Iceland Whale Bone Project” offers experimental research based on bones of beached whales collected by ECAL Product Design Master students. This work was initiated on the occasion of a workshop in Iceland with designer Brynjar Sigurðarson. Each year some fifteen whales get stranded on the coasts of Iceland. A whole local tradition is being kept alive around the bones of these gentle giants, often used in their raw state but rarely worked on by designers. In January 2013, 17 ECAL Product Design Master students went to the Iceland Academy of the Arts in Reykjavik to attend a workshop led by Icelandic designer Brynjar Sigurðarson. According to him “the idea was to collect various types of bones on the beach, but also shark skin or teeth, or even bits of plastic waste. From this starting point, the ECAL students who had come from all corners of the earth were supposed to draw on the atmosphere of this particular environment to create objects”. From the skull of a Minke whale repainted like a car body to cutters using shark s teeth, via ship models whose centreboard is made from whale vertebrae, masks put together using the remains of marine animals and contemporary materials, and including a geometric decorative object made of bone and placed on a pedestal, this surprisingly poetic selection is the fruit of a reflection on contrasts between the old and the new and the meeting of the primitive and the progressive.
ECAL MIlano 2013: "Lights of Harcourt" with Baccarat,09–14.04.2013,Palazzo Morando, Milan On the occasion of “Highlights“ organized by Baccarat, “Lights of Harcourt” displays a collection of lamps produced by ECAL students in the Product Design Master and Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship. This collaboration with Baccarat is the outcome of a workshop with designer Camille Blin. In the wake of a collaboration initiated in 2011, Baccarat and ECAL are pursuing their joint reflection in 2013 around the iconic Harcourt range. Under the supervision of designer Camille Blin, five pairs of students in the Product Design Master and Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship designed the “Lights of Harcourt” collection for Baccarat — a panorama of intriguing, contemporary lamps. “From molten matter to the end-product, via crystal cutting, we sought to light up — in the literal and figurative sense — the qualities of this material rife with a unique historical past”, Camille Blin explains. Questioning all aspects of the glassmakers know-how and reinterpreting the 6-facet motif of the famous Harcourt glass, each project diverts the Baccarat emblem from its original function to delve into the magical mysteries of crystal. You discover a tribute to the sculptures of Ettore Sottsass with a modular lamp with multi-faceted effects. In the subtly playful dance-hall spirit, a traditional light bulb is robed in facets, mounted as a garland or magnified on a lamp stand. Hinting at the surrealist universe of Salvador Dali, a project diverts the crystal s properties to turn it into a coat with a bevelled lining which wraps around a metal structure. Enshrined in a crystal goblet, a spotlight allows you to freely position the light. Available in an infinite variety of colours, another concept focuses on the refraction phenomena displayed by crystal. Boasting the obvious look of a child s masterpiece, a lamp makes the traditional Harcourt hexagon at its heart beat with emotion. www.baccarat.com
ECAL MIlano 2013: "Savoir-Faire",08–14.04.2013,Spazio Orso 16, Milan The “Savoir-Faire” exhibition showcases a selection by ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos, featuring projects in Product and Industrial Design, Art Direction, Photography, Graphic Design and Media & Interaction Design by ECAL Bachelor and Master students. Following a successful experience at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan last year, ECAL offers, for the second time, an exhibition which introduces photography, graphic design, art direction and interaction design amidst “traditional” product & industrial design works. “At ECAL there is no single way to create, although we do take to heart such values as precision, professionalism, innovation – and even humour. Our outmost objective is to develop different skills specific to each programme, but also to integrate this diverse know-how in the cross-disciplinary fashion which has established our school s reputation. With this exhibition we wanted to show that our students “know how” to contribute with passion to each field developed at ECAL”, says ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos.

Né en 1957 à Amsterdam, il a emménagé à New York en 1979, où il s est investi au sein de la scène artistique locale au contact d artistes tels que Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring ou Robert Mapplethorpe. Depuis, Ari Marcopoulos est reconnu comme un photographe et un documentariste majeur de la culture contemporaine.
