Archigraphiæ. Rationalist Lettering and Architecture in Fascist Rome Project
Archigraphiæ. Rationalist Lettering and Architecture in Fascist Rome

Archigraphiæ. Rationalist Lettering and Architecture in Fascist Rome Letterforms carry messages – in public space, they are powerful propaganda tools. Witness to this fact are the inscriptions placed on display by Emperors to showcase their power across the Roman Empire. During a Summer School at the Swiss Institute in Rome, ECAL MA in Type Design and ISIA Urbino students explored a more recent avatar of this communication tool. During a Summer School at the Swiss Institute in Rome, ECAL MA in Type Design and ISIA Urbino students explored a more recent avatar of this communication tool. During the fascist era in Italy (1922–1943), the rise to power of Benito Mussolini made his revolutionary political party a ruling institution, which had, as its ambition, the creation of an empire modelled on ancient Rome. The visual aesthetic of the Caesars was captured and used by the fascists to position themselves as successors to a glorious tradition. Imagery and photography also played a part in this endeavour, as did architecture and inscription letters. The buildings and monuments of the 1930s frequently display mottos and texts carved in white marble. Latin and Italian were used, and full capitals, in the ancient Roman tradition. While the design of these letters is based on Ancient models, their shapes are definitely modern; sans serif geometric letterforms. In the first instance, Archigraphiæ sought to collect images of inscriptions on monuments, public buildings, graveyards, street plaques in Rome. Then some of those original designs were digitised to reveal their construction, and the ways in which small elements can be capable of turning a neutral geometrical font into a very Italian-style fascist symbol. By mapping this conspicuous feature of fascist propaganda, the Summer School aimed to deconstruct the mechanisms used to promote political ambitions, and to compare this font with other modernist sans serifs of the time. An analysis of the storytelling behind the use of the letterforms allowed students to develop critical thinking about current (political, commercial, militant) uses of type and lettering.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader) (project leader) Jonathan Pierini (project leader)Research teamLecturers and researchers Chiara Barbieri Gianluca Camillini Pippo Ciorra Emilio Gentile Alessandra Tarquini Paul Shaw Carlo Vinti Assistants StudentsECAL MA Type Design , , , , , , , ECAL MA Photographie ISIA Urbino MA in Communication, Design and Publishing Gianluca Ciancaglini, Alberto Malossi, David Mozzetta, Giuseppe RomagnoPeriodseptember 2018Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne ISIA Urbino Istituto Svizzero di RomaDisseminationSummer school Archigraphiæ. Pierry Jaquillard – Prelude in ACGT, Chr. 1 to 22 and XY 2018: the recent technological advances pledge an eternal conservation of data. DNA seems to be the new medium for memory. Nevertheless, interpretation and therefore the understanding of this data is crucial. Will we be able to decode it? By giving a new interpretation of this code through music, I seek to discover it. How is it composed? Has it already been composed? This research is materialized by four screens to interact and understand different interpretations of only one code. Between science and music, this project interfaces culture, codes and nature.

Workshop Olivier Cablat

Workshop Olivier Cablat On July 2nd 2018 Ecal s second year Bachelor photography students presented their "guerrilla communication" project at the opening of Rencontres d Arles. Under the direction of Olivier Cablat (artist, teacher and artistic director of Cosmos Arles Books) and Milo Keller (head of the Photography Department at ECAL), the 2nd year Bachelor students analysed and diverged modes of communication and diffusion for one semester. Both physical and digital strategies have been developed for the field work in Arles: from wild posting, to live webcam, from propaganda to social networks. During the opening week of the festival, the students transformed a 55 m² room of the Cosmos Arles Books into an editorial office, exhibition and work space. This project between installation and caricature, aims to augment our relationship to our society of spectacle, where the speed of dissemination of information sometimes makes the true and false indistinguishable. A newspaper of 250 copies will be printed daily as a physical witness of this experience at multiple media levels. Fuori catalogo / Out of production Project
Fuori catalogo / Out of production

Fuori catalogo / Out of production The Fuori catalogo research project calls into question the way we think about the life cycles of contemporary design objects by shifting focus from a product s birth and lifespan to its “end moment”. The research team led by Anniina Koivu (Head of Master Theory, ECAL) and Rosanna Pavoni (scientific director of Fondazione Studio Museo Vico Magistretti), explored the important yet under-researched topic of why and how products cease to be available on the market by examining the vast body of work left behind by Italian architect and product designer Vico Magistretti (1920–2006). One of the seminal figures in postwar Italian design, he based his work on a close collaboration with manufacturers, creating 334 products and furniture objects. Yet only 65 of these design classics are still in production as of January 2020. Researchers drew on the extensive archives of the Fondazione Vico Magistretti, analysed specialist journals and conducted interviews with manufacturers and many of the original decision-makers investigating the manifold factors underpinning the decision to cease production of twelve Magistretti s iconic creations, here employed as case studies. They are also the focus of a portfolio of new images created by ECAL alumni from the Photography courses. The outputs of the research project are disseminated through the book Vico Magistretti: Stories of Objects, published by Triest verlag with graphic design by NORM, available in Italian an English editions.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Rosanna Pavoni (Fondazione studio museo Vico Magistretti)Research teamLecturers and researchers Maddalena Dalla Mura Francesco Zanot Research assistant Photographers PartnerFondazione studio museo Vico MagistrettiPeriodmay 2017 – august 2018Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationPublication Anniina Koivu, Vico Magistretti. Intended as a book typeface, it is suitable in small sizes where its smooth ductus creates an organic text structure, as well as for headline sizes where it excels in its elegant style of drawing. Davide Tomatis – Metodo. Diploma Project by Davide Tomatis Metodo is a typeface that takes inspiration from a dusty German grotesk with a  strong industrial look drawn at the beginning of the twentieth century. The main focus of the project was to keep the original rigidity and tension in its curves and at the same time to obtain a good texture on the page when used for running text. Although the source can lead back to a classical taste, the effort was to accomplish an image which doesn t refer to a specific technology, giving Metodo a timeless rather than an outdated look. Bastien Gomez – ETHEREAL «Ethereal» evokes the omnipotence of an irrational market economy, sacralized and disconnected from the real world. This work, presented as a book, highlights the opaque and confiden-tial environment of high finance and trading floors, in a climate of impunity that still persists 10 years after the crisis of 2008. In this abstract and immaterial universe, my images interpret from  a narrative point of view the quasi-fictional melancholic daily life of European traders, buyers and sellers of anticipations, in a time of computerized and dehumanized trading. «Ethereal» evokes the omnipotence of an irrational market economy, sacralized and disconnected from the real world. Restless

Robert Swierczynski – Restless «Restless» aims to expose the discomfort of ordinary life, directing at-tention towards anxiety - a feeling that dominates modern humanism and plagues people regardless of their status. Both as a book and an installation, the project resembles a voyeuristic catalog of weird moments that we wouldn t be eager to flaunt, even though they instantly bring us back to life through a sincere  and straightforward observation. Formed by a non-linear combination of events, the photos remain thematically and aesthetically independent, acting only as elements of a much larger narrative. «Restless» aims to expose the discomfort of ordinary life, directing at-tention towards anxiety - a feeling that dominates modern humanism and plagues people regardless of their status. Aesop x ECAL Event
Aesop x ECAL

Aesop x ECAL,21.06–15.07.2018,Aesop Oberdorfstrasse, Zurich An exhibition of projects by ECAL Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship students in collaboration with Aesop. From 21 June (opening reception from 6.30pm) to 15 July, Aesop Oberdorfstrasse, Zurich. The skincare, haircare and body products specialist Aesop chose ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne to design two accessories for its brand : an electric essential oil burner and a washbag. In doing so, Aesop clearly showed it cared for smart and sustainable design. After an in-depth presentation and a visit to the three Aesop shops in Zurich, 17 ECAL graduate students from the MAS in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship started working under the leadership of professor and designer Tomas Kral. At the end of the workshop, a jury made up of some of the brand executives – among them Mandy Cupper, Head of Product, who had made the trip from Melbourne especially – selected some twenty projects that explored materials as varied as wood, cork, natural resins, ceramic, hand-blown glass and textile. In addition to an aesthetic and innovating design, the students brief included sustainability. Through working prototypes, students imagined projects such as a neoprene washbag inspired from the surfing world or a pocket-size foldable washbag, an essential oil burner producing steam reminiscent of Japanese mountains and a completely transparent oil burner revealing its fan blades and its usual bottle of essential oils. All the other projects also have their own distinctive world in which our bodies and minds are invited to travel through our senses of sight, smell and touch. Exhibition from 22 June until 15 July 2018 Opening Reception: Thursday 21 June, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm Opening hours: Monday - Friday 10am - 7pm, Saturday 10am - 6pm. Galerie des Bustes Project
Galerie des Bustes

Galerie des Bustes The Festival Images is a free event focused on contemporary images. The specificity of the Festival Images is to present monumental photography in the open air, while presenting projects around the image in a broader sense indoors. For the 2018 edition, ECAL was for the fourth time associated with the festival by pursuing the search for specific devices for outdoor image exhibitions. It is a question of imagining a photo booth. A space to take pictures of yourself alone or with others. The initiation, the fund, the global process will have to take the form of a real experience and interactivity. It is necessary to invent a device that is close to the installation, that is playful and that does not only provide a technical solution to the shooting. For the festival, this installation represents a real expectation of the audience as well as an income since each image costs 5.- Chf. HD Images Brochure with explanations Picasso, Giacometti, ECAL. Some projects sometimes give rise to what may first seem to be unlikely associations. In this case, it turned out for the best. The Musée national Picasso-Paris challenged ECAL to create new seats, at once practical and discreet and yet with distinctive character, for the exhibition areas. We rose to the challenge. In order to best respond to the visitors needs, ECAL commissioned a group of nine students and graduates to carry out a study on the seats of fifty museums or so in Europe (Germany, England, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland). Inspired by this survey, 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design students worked with materials of their choice under the guidance of designer and professor Chris Kabel. Isabelle Baudraz s ‘Tie bench was selected from the projects put forward before being assessed in situ to make sure it blended with the architecture of the museum and the works of the Spanish genius. The benches were finally produced by the outdoor furniture company Tectona. All the project participants worked in a concerted manner and the project was a great success. Picasso and Giacometti can definitely sit easy. Opening hours Monday 16 April – Saturday 21 April, 10 am – 7 pm Tectona Showroom Via della Moscova 47/a 20121 Milano www.tectona.net www.museepicassoparis.fr

Point & Shoot Project
Point & Shoot

Point & Shoot This project is the result of a collaboration between students in Bachelor Industrial Design and in Bachelor Media & Interaction Design following a workshop led by Map Project Office. “Double action” is part of the exhibition “Ligne de Mire” presented at mudac in Lausanne, from 14 March to 26 August 2018. In the society that Orwell describes in Nineteen Eighty-Four, every citizen is under constant monitoring by the authorities. The people are constantly reminded of this by the slogan “Big Brother is watching you”. Nowadays in the Digital Age, biometric recognition and artificial intelligence (AI) surveillance systems thrive quietly in our back pocket. Not far from what Orwell prophesied, in Two Thousand Eighteen, with all those powerful technologies at our fingertips, “Point-and-shoot” proposes two playful devices arising from “open source” AI technologies such as dense captioning (DenseCap), with “Talking Camera” — a camera that instantly audio translates the scene you just shot—and facial recognition AI algorithms, with “Move n Pick” — a people-triggered camera that captures pictures when subjects are striking the pre-selected pose. “Talking Camera” is a device that instantly translates the scene it captures. ECAL/Amélie Demay, Pierry Jacquillard and Hanieh Rachid “Move n Pick” is a people-triggered camera that captures pictures when subjects are striking the preselected pose. ECAL x QWSTION in Zurich

ECAL x QWSTION in Zurich,08.03–07.04.2018,QWSTION Store Zurich A joint project between Swiss bag brand QWSTION and ECAL students of the Master Product Design programme, exploring ways of carrying and using the new sustainable and lightweight material CottonShell®. Ten prototypes have been selected for display at QWSTION Zurich from 8 March to 7 April 2018. Images HD In the project led by Christian Paul Kaegi, Swiss Designer and Creative Director at QWSTION, the sustainably produced CottonShell® was the starting point for an extensive research. CottonShell® has so far been used for clothing only and its unique construction makes it water-resistant without the use of any coating. Questioning the norm, using straightforward materials and integrating functionality in effortless ways are the core brand values of QWSTION which completed the brief. The students engagement with both the QWSTION brand as well as the new material resulted in interesting new ideas and concepts going beyond the ordinary: a scarf with hidden pockets aims to challenge airline staff, a new method of protecting contents inspired by bubblewrap makes for minimal carry and a backpack with integrated rain coat tackles unpleasant weather surprises. From 8 March to 7 April Monday-Friday 11-7pm Saturday 11-5pm QWSTION Store Zurich Badenerstrasse 156 8004 Zürich – Switzerland www.qwstion.com
