Moon River

Guillaume Cerdeira – Moon River Moon River is a 2D top-down view game. The player is locked in the screenplay: when he crosses the boundaries, he finds himself teleported to the opposite screen side. Three levels challenge the player, leading him to use the abilities of the character to solve a series of puzzles becoming more and more complex along the game. This project was an opportunity for me to create a coherent universe, but also to offer an entertaining and challenging experience.

Anne Stock – The Strangers in My Body The Strangers in my Body is an interpretation of the story of Eve, a woman who discovered her multiple personalities with the help of two psychologists. The first case of Multiple Identity Disorder, 1950. Besides the psychological discovery of her disease, the book also shows how she lived with and discovered new personalities over a period of four years. Interviews under hypnosis, case studies about her disease, diary entries as well as a series of portraits with minimal changes complement the story behind the twenty-two different faces of Eve. Lilian Kim – Sajin Sajeon This book is a lexicon of untranslatable Korean words that are related to my origins. Untranslatability happens when it is hard to find a one-to-one equivalence from the source language to the target language. In an effort to get closer to those meanings, I visualize the concepts through archive photographs. The reader can look at each word individually, whereas the book as a whole reveals Korean culture through the history of my family. This collection of 100 words was organized in Korean alphabetical order and came from associations, memories and introspection. Chloé Pannatier – Lucky Number In this project, I dealt with lottery games. My main fascination: the players fantasies, their obsessions, the way they pick numbers, and the rituals used to influence the implacable logic of numbers and call for luck, day after day. In order to reveal the dream, I used the grid and the numbers to generate visual layers built around three characters. By developing images, I was able to recreate this whole atmosphere of euphoria and imagination. Also, the player uses a set of rules to make up the grid, as does the graphic designer. His father trains him everyday and his grandfather films each of his games on his DV camera, despite his nascent Parkinson s disease. Let s just say that in the Gaillard family, football is a very important tradition that has been passed down from one generation to the next. However, Martin is no longer interested in catching balls all day long. He would like to do something else, but no one in his family seems to be listening to him. It is therefore today, the day of the final, that Martin will have to find a way to make himself heard.

ECAL Appartement 50, Cité Radieuse,04–19.07.2015,Cité Radieuse, Marseille In September 2014, twelve Master Product Design students of ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne were invited to reflect on a collection of objects to meet everyday needs in the Cité Radieuse in Marseille. The outcome of this research is being displayed as part of an exhibition staged in Apartment 50 from 4 to 19 July 2015. A 52-page publication produced by the Art Direction Master students will be issued concurrently. HD PICTURES Apartment 50 was restored by two enthusiasts, Jean-Marc Drut and Patrick Blauwart, as close as possible to its original condition. Listed as a historical monument, the venue occasionally hosts exhibition projects. World-renowned designers have already exhibited there, such as Jasper Morrison, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Konstantin Grcic and Pierre Charpin. Thus, under the direction of Thilo Alex Brunner, head of the Master Product Design at ECAL, and of ECAL professor Augustin Scott de Martinville, a series of objects was produced over one semester by the Product Design Master students. The project began in September 2014 with a three-day workshop in the Cité Radieuse, allowing students to experience life in the building. Based on their various observations, they created objects to “inhabit” Apartment 50, focusing particularly on the following features: The specific climate of the apartments: the fan creates an air flow on the mezzanine and the cushions are designed to fit both on the living room s indoor parapets and on the loggias tables. The flexibility of interior spaces: the large rotating lamp serves to light either the dining room or the living room in turn, while the small model can be used either on a desk or a bedside table. Tours of Apartment 50 which take place regularly: the carpet, crafted with the support of the Ruckstuhl AG manufacture in Langenthal, displays a map showing how the Cité Radieuse blended in with its environment at the time of construction, while the “unit” metre provides a simple tool to explain the Modulor system. Life in the communal areas, especially the roof terrace which serves as a meeting place: the chair and folding table are designed to facilitate migration from the living room of the apartment, while the picnic box allows to comfortably carry everything you for an aperitif. In addition to the projects around the above-mentioned specificities, half a dozen other objects can be discovered on the spot or in the related publication. In March 2015, the students of the ECAL Master Art Direction were invited to attend a four-day workshop to experience and document everyday life in the building with a view to editing a publication. Through the architectural spectrum across 52 pages, this editorial project includes portraits of residents or fictional characters inspired by the Modulor system, as well as still lifes and original typefaces echoing the building s proportions. Diplomas Jérôme Wilfredo Baccaglio ,  Logos for Drones and Such... I created a catalogue for drone logos. It gathers a heterogenous iconography (invented, drawn, found) whose every motif is available for purchase as a canvas, a tattoo, a drawing or a sticker. This is an oblique strategy adopted to talk about the interpretation of an image (as the spectator, or as the artist, to assign it a meaning, a name); the versus created by hand-made work and a digital image; mercantilism; the matter of copyright and its role in an information-infested era. Tina Braegger,   Fasanenstrasse 30 I made an architectural model of white cardboard, placed on four white metal legs. I decorated the model with white curtains that flow over the model down to the floor. Inside the model, I put old toys of mine, objects that originally belong to a doll s house. By attaching the legs directly to the model, it looks like a table. I wanted to create something surreal, like a dream; the objects inside the model are slightly too big, and the model bleeds off as the curtains overflow. Julien Gremaud ,  The Big Picture Two wallpapers face each other. They are very white, their black lines are basic. The templates have been done. It was questioned whether the surfaces should be solid or empty, filled with monochromy or blocks of primary colour. One can always enlarge them if necessary. These are ai files. One no longer needs a Hasselblad camera. There is not a whole lot left of the source image. By the way: photography wants to appropriate space. But we are still unable to do so. Eventually, the finishings, very weighty. I promise you Johanne, I will take some pictures for our collaboration s archives. Emanuele Marcuccio ,  Untitled (Serve the Servants) This is a partial truth, a fragment of my understanding, my sense of things. Being alone in the office, being alone in the library, being alone in the studio is still about a certain notion of improving. ECAL-Typefaces.ch,30.04.2015,Harpe 45, Lausanne ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne launches an online foundry in association with Swiss Typefaces, allowing to acquire fonts realized by the students in Bachelor Graphic Design and in Master Art Direction. A premiere for a school! www.ecal-typefaces.ch With this website created in collaboration with Swiss Typefaces, ECAL is probably the first university in the world to have launched an online type foundry, allowing direct access for anyone to a selection of typefaces, all designed by students. Thanks to renowned professors such as François Rappo, Aurèle Sack, Ian Party, Gilles Gavillet and Ludovic Balland, and prestigious visiting lecturers such as Frederik Berlaen, Kai Bernau, Peter Bilak, Laurenz Brunner, Christian Schwartz, Paul Barnes and Emmanuel Rey, ECAL has been able to boast a solid reputation in Type Design teaching for several years. Fonts designed by students during the Bachelor Graphic Design and Master Art Direction courses (or for the diploma) are regularly used for ECAL corporate communications (posters, invitations cards, catalogues...), and because of this usage, people often ask to us how to acquire these typefaces, in particular our Headline Fonts. This website is here to answer those requests. ECAL is proud to be able to share these fonts with the largest possible audience and to offer a platform for our students, deserving heirs of a typically Swiss know-how.

Exhibition «Antoine Boudin – Arundo e Estrambord»,29.04–29.05.2015,Gallery l elac, ECAL Du 1 er au 29 mai 2015 à la Galerie l elac à Renens, l ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne présente «Antoine Boudin – Arundo e Estrambord». Proposée dans le cadre des Designer s Days au Palais de Tokyo à Paris en 2014, cette exposition du designer français, diplômé en 2008 du Bachelor Design Industriel de l ECAL, aborde la thématique du mouvement avec la présence d un bateau réalisé en cannes de Provence et dévoile les nouveaux matériaux, ainsi que les objets issus de cette recherche. Dans la continuité de son projet sur la canne de Provence initié avec la Bourse Agora pour le Design, Antoine Boudin présente un nouveau volet de son travail à partir de cette graminée géante. Il propose un point de vue fort sur la place du designer dans la valorisation de déchets issus d une culture très présente dans le Var. Le designer invite également l artiste vidéaste Jean-Baptiste Warluzel à travers une installation et des vidéos qui poussent l art et le design au dialogue avec la canne de Provence comme matière première. Antoine Boudin Antoine Boudin est né en Avignon en 1986. Il est diplômé de l ECAL (Bachelor Design Industriel) en 2008 avec «Quieu Bagna», un bateau de camps à voile latine. En 2009, il assiste le designer Alexander Taylor à Londres avant de remporter le grand prix du jury de Design Parade 4, présidé par Jasper Morrison. Il devient ensuite l assistant de François Azambourg de 2009 à 2011. En 2010, il présente quatorze nouvelles pièces dans son exposition «…E ié vivèn de belli causo» («… et on y vit de belles choses»), retraçant un an de résidence à la Villa Noailles à Hyères. Passionné par la matière et par le «faire», Antoine Boudin développe un travail axé sur les matériaux ancrés dans le territoire où il est amené à travailler, s inscrivant dans une démarche d éco-conception. Ses projets sont influencés par ses origines provençales et méditerranéennes, abordant l industrie et l artisanat avec la même volonté d innovation. En 2011, il ouvre son propre atelier à Hyères afin de développer de nouveaux projets et de continuer ses recherches sur les matériaux, la Provence et la mer. Collaboration with Vacheron Constantin Vacheron Constantin presents the “Arts & Crafts & Design: Time according to ECAL and Swiss Craftsmen”, an exhibition produced in partnership with ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne and the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d Arte for the Swiss Pavilion at the Milan Expo (May 1st – October 31st 2015), and presented as a preview during the Salone del Mobile at the Museo Bagatti Valsecchi in Milan. This original approach links contemporary creation to several time-honoured know-hows. Within the framework of this project, Vacheron Constantin has asked 12 students from the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship of ECAL to combine their creativity with that of experienced craftsmen in order to produce unique objects and demonstrate the richness, the variety, as well as the relevance to contemporary creation of these artisanal crafts. Under the leadership of Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin (Studio Formafantasma) these 12 “duos” have worked on the same theme, Time, and more precisely on the cyclical time of the seasons, using materials as diverse as paper, stone, glass or carbon.

Since 2013, Vacheron Constantin has partnered the ECAL s Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship, a unique training course for the various creative arts professions related to the world of luxury. This is an opportunity for students to make a contribution each year to conducting a concrete project, in partnership with the Manufacture. This original approach links contemporary creation to ancestral know-how. Within the framework of this project, ECAL and Vacheron Constantin have asked 12 students to combine their creativity with that of experienced craftsmen in order to produce unique objects and demonstrate the richness, the variety, as well as the relevance to contemporary creation of these artisanal crafts. Under the leadership of Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin (Studio Formafantasma) these 12 “duos” have worked on the same theme, Time, and more precisely the cyclical time of the seasons, using materials as diverse as paper and glass. Visitors will thus have an opportunity to explore mobiles crafted with an automaton maker; a picnic bag made with a saddler; a vase created with a glass blower; a mirror cast in an aluminium foundry; a lamp built with a stonemason; an axe and knives developed with an expert in carbon fibre; an assembly of stained glass windows composed with a master glassmaker; plates designed with a ceramist; fans produced with a paper-cutting specialist; a tray fashioned from marquetry; a millstone carved in conjunction with a stone sculptor and finally a musical box executed with the help of a stringed-instrument maker (luthier). These works, born of a student-craftsman dialogue, have given rise to an exhibition entitled “Arts&Crafts&Design: Time according to ECAL and Swiss Craftsmen, previewed in Milan during the Milan Furniture Fair (Salone Internazionale del Mobile from April 14th to 19th 2015) prior to being presented in the context of the VIP Lounge of the Swiss Pavilion for the entire duration of Expo Milan 2015 (May 1st to October 31st 2015). The ECAL students of the Bachelor Photography and Master Product Design present a series of interactive installations showing how mobile phone cameras and the selfie phenomenon changed the way we look at ourselves. Images HD Video Catalogue/Cards Press release How can one create objects and installations around the portrait theme in this digital age? What means are available to disseminate these? How can one make visitors interact with the exhibits and turn viewers into the main actors in the exhibition? Over a semester, 1st year Master Product Design students and 2ndyear Bachelor Photography students from ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne worked on these issues with the aim to present their findings as part of an exhibition. Under the watchful eye of Vincent Jacquier, Head of the Visual Communication Department, of designer Camille Blin and photographer Nicolas Haeni, the students were able to understand, using various approaches, how current – material or virtual – technology alters our traditional relationship with portraits, be they selfies or pictures of others. Using modern media as well as more run-of-the-mill devices, exhibition visitors are invited to directly experiment the processes imagined by the students, allowing them to discover new interactive and fun ways of having their picture taken 3.0 style. Based on this principle, the exhibition stages an installation playing with the visitor s shadow; the combination of a mirror and scanner to create realistic or distorted self-portraits; an image which is altered through song; a tribute to famous departed designers through a system of filters placed in front of a smartphone; analogically merged faces; a 180° portrait produced by a range of reflective surfaces; a trompe-l oeil projection on a mask; a family of objects able to hijack the smartphone camera function to create original images; a poetic reinterpretation Instagram; and finally, self-portraits captured by the photo itself. Saber, film de diplôme réalisé à l ECAL avec Box Productions, qui a remporté le Quartz du Meilleur court métrage à l occasion des Prix du cinéma suisse DISCIPLINE de Christophe M. Saber 21h50, dans une épicerie de Lausanne tenue par des Egyptiens. Excédé, un père de famille perd patience et corrige son enfant désobéissante. Une cliente choquée exprime son désaccord. D autres clients interviennent, chacun y met son grain de sel et le personnel est dépassé. La conversation se transforme en débat, le débat en dispute. Christophe M. Saber Né en 1991 au Caire. Nationalité suisse et egyptienne. Après ses études dans un collège américain au Caire et une brève formation dans une école de réalisation aux USA, il intègre le département cinéma de l ECAL en 2010. Masterclass with Juergen Teller Ahead of his conference at ECAL on February 11, 2015, the artist and photographer Juergen Teller visited Fine Arts Master students at their studio, to answer their questions and discuss their works. A group of photography students also participated in this masterclass. Born in Erlangen (Germany) in 1964, Juergen Teller studied at Bayerische Staatslehranstalt für Photographie in Munich, before moving to London in 1986. He is known to navigate between art and commercial photography, blurring the boundaries between his commissioned works and more personal images. He has published over thirty artist books and he exhibits internationally, with solo shows at venues including the Photographers Gallery and the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London, Kunsthalle Vienna and Fondation Cartier in Paris. His photographs are regularly published in magazines such as POP, Die Zeit,  032c ,  Purple ,  Self Service  and  W Magazine . He also collaborates with numerous brands among which Céline, Helmut Lang, Louis Vuitton, Marc jacobs, and Vivienne Westwood. Heart of glass

Heart of glass This project questions the potential for glass in contemporary art and design to adopt a pragmatic approach with a view to producing extraordinary results. This research project also offers a cutting- edge model in the field of creative research, which places students at the heart of the process. Given the particular qualities of glass, the multiple shapes it can take and its many potential applications to art, crafts and industry, the Heart of Glass project has chosen to experiment with this material and explore new opportunities for creating and designing products. This project was partly driven by a need to question certain modes of production, both in industry and in the crafts, that are central to the concerns of young designers today. This research has also generated productive links between practical experimentation, the evaluation of the findings of these experiments and their ultimate dissemination. Finally, leaving aside the issues involved in project development itself, Heart of Glass offers a potential model for research-creation in design, based on an innovative, forward-looking approach. The objectives of the project included: developing and conducting a range of activities rooted in developing original tools and procedures and contributing to the state of the art and current body of knowledge relating to the design of glass products; using protocols to document experimental and empirical developments to ensure that experiences are shared and skills are applied; proposing samples and prototypes of objects whose formal and/or functional qualities render them suitable subjects for promising further developments; creating relevant links between experimentation, documentation and assessment to furnish designers with a suitable research methodology. The research team first identified, through a review of the literature and the potential partnerships, the best opportunities available for experimenting with new approaches in designing products in glass. On the basis of this, they identified three key themes: the application of industrial technologies to contexts other than those for which they had been designed; the design of glass projects in the context of a semi-industrial production and marketing structure; the forming of new refractory materials for the design of moulds to produce objects. Initially, these themes gave rise to practical workshops for students and assistants in the Master s degree in Product Design, supervised by professors and lecturers from ECAL. Plan B: this work on industrial technologies led to the creation of five prototypes that illustrated the potential of each of the procedures used. Technical data sheets explained their working principles. ​​​​​Meisenthal: six prototypes were created during a workshop held at CIAV (Centre International d Art Verrier). They were each supported by fact sheets that describe the manufacturing process. Mould Machine: in the course of a workshop covering the forming of original moulds, representative samples of the most promising techniques were selected. Different fact sheets were drawn up identifying the properties of each material tested. ​​​​​At a later stage, the most promising findings from each workshop were selected, and representative items were produced by practitioners from product design-related disciplines for the final project exhibition. The Heart of Glass project allowed us to develop an entire range of original tools and procedures, and consequently a very large number of samples that could serve as sources of inspiration for the design of future glass objects. A wide selection of the most interesting pieces was presented at the exhibition that marked the closure of the project. They can also be viewed on the website. In the context of this research-creation project and in accordance with the model developed by ECAL, the use of experimental workshops based on tightly defined complementary themes has proved to be extremely effective in developing original, innovative artefacts. Extreme care went into workshop organisation to ensure a clear fit between objectives and findings: the tools and procedures that were developed broadly met our expectations and the resulting datasheets offered a first, promising attempt to record and disseminate these experiments. Heart of Glass is the first of a series of research-creation projects focusing on design and materials. To its credit, this first experiment led to very important discussions about the definition of research in design and how it could be included within a master s degree curriculum. Exhibition "ECAL Photography" in London,04.12.2014–15.01.2015,Display Gallery, London ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne presents the “ECAL Photography” exhibition at Display Gallery in London. The exhibition offers a selection of works produced by 58 young talents during their Photography Bachelor curriculum at ECAL. All these images were chosen by exhibition curator Nathalie Herschdorfer, who has developed several internationally acclaimed projects around emerging photography, as well as by Milo Keller, head of the Photography programme at ECAL, and Alexis Georgacopoulos, ECAL director. The scenography of the exhibition is created especially by Swiss designer Adrien Rovero. The “ECAL Photography” book (296 pages, 385 images) supports this event. The installation ‘Out of the Box , designed by Joelle Aeschlimann and Sylvain Aebischer, offers an enjoyable exploration of the inception, production and impact of these iconic designs. (Pictures HD) Pieces like the Eames Lounge Chair, the Panton Chair or the Landi Chair are counted among the great classics of industrial furniture design. Over the years they have earned iconic status and established their place as cherished objects in our everyday lives. But how were these designs created, and who was responsible for them? What is the source of their enduring appeal, and why do they only get better with age? Last but not least: how were they originally produced, and how are they manufactured today? With their installation ‘Out of the Box , Joelle Aeschlimann and Sylvain Aebischer – graduates of ECAL Lausanne in the respective fields of Media & Interaction Design and Industrial Design – provide an entertaining look at well-known furniture classics. The factory stands at the focus of their installation as the place where design objects are created. Stories, myths, ideas and objects emerge and intersect in the factory. It is where designer and developer work on prototypes, where materials are processed and details are refined, where structural components are assembled by people and machines, where the finished furniture pieces are packed and shipped, and where the classics are repaired and refurbished even after decades of use. Jean-Vincent Simonet – Maldoror In 1869, aged 23, Isidore Ducasse published Les Chants de Maldoror, a  cutting-edge book praising youth revolt, blasphemy and the victory of dream over reality. My work is a rendition of the original book, divided into six booklets. This new illustrated version is a revival of this literary enigma, transforming the classic novel into a contemporary editorial object. Each of the six booklets offers a thematic approach related to the universe of Les Chants de Maldoror. The graphic design and different typologies of pictures give each booklet its own and strong personality. The literary blasphemy turns into a tribute. Apian Bees, architecture, and Science Fiction – what could these three apparently  unconnected universes have in common? The first is motivated by my grandfather who is himself a beekeeper. Additionally, I have a strong interest in science fiction, specifically stories that describe dystopic, totalitarian societies of the future. Through these interests, I discovered the 1998 book The Beehive Metaphor, published by Juan A. Ramirez. In his work, he examines how bees have influenced our architectures. My pictures depict hybrid constructions ranging from traditional hives to concrete bricks to architecture. Those subjects are raised to the level of sculpture, yet their forms are too obviously related to their function to avoid the notion of a precise goal. Tessa Donati – Viwo Sound, illustration and construction are the key elements of the Viwo box, which contains 16 little wood blocks prepared to disclose six amusing illustrations. By placing these living cubes in the right place it will be possible to discover the supporting role of sound in solving the puzzle. This first game encourages children to examine the shapes of the objects, stimulates them to recreate the images accurately and increases their listening skills. To get started, just touch the word Viwo. The lid of the box and the available cards function as an amazing game! The senses involved are mainly touch, hearing and sight. In planning and building this box, my aim was to combine the traditional qualities of a wood game with those of modern games that capture children s attention.

Marc Dubois – Open Controllers This project suggests combining common industrial objects with several sensors that smartphones are equipped with, such as the gyroscope or the camera, in order to create controllers that are easy to reproduce: a sphere and a cube that transmit 3D movements, as well as a cone that can locate a source of light. These controllers work with a game specially developed for them. This project remains full of possibilities which I look forward to discovering.

Human beings are squashed by blurred, pixilated and scaled effects. The amount of pictures is huge and the layout is dense in order to give the reader a feeling of immersion into this artificial world, close to claustrophobia. In my life, I have really struggled between fascination with and rejection of this luxury world you can meet in Baselworld for example. And this diploma project was a way to explore that in a totally different manner. This photography book explores five Swiss fairs. We also wanted to base our diploma on reality, and to talk about fashion in countries where it is not as documented as here yet. So we travelled to Nairobi, to meet some of the Kenya Fashion Week designers, to make an inventory of fashion there, and of what we found around it. This book compiles collaborations with those designers and documentary folders. From this duality results a project which oscillates between Fashion and Report, Uzuri Ubichi, Beauty and Rawness. For this project, we both wanted to use different mediums – graphic design, photography, video, fashion. We also wanted to base our diploma on reality, and to talk about fashion in countries where it is not as documented as here yet. Rhona Mühlebach – Off the Highway She s riding an E-Bike while he is on a normal one. The road is steep. Comment The film Abseits der Autobahn tells a story of love at the end of the road. Rhona dissects the question of desire between a man and a woman, and it is breathless and on the verge of an asthma attack that they reveal their relationship that is unraveling, the darkness of their feelings, in other words, the passage of time with its indelible traces. In a natural setting in the midst of the changing seasons, in a film in motion that plays on the stretching of time, in its relationship to the actors, in its mastery of space, Rhona asserts her aesthetic choice and her influences. Together in this upper class woman s home, they engage in a courtship, both sensual and distant, unequal and versatile, in which they try to lead the other into the place of their fantasy. Commentaire Constructed as a love duel, Parades features a director and a young actor who meet, for one evening, in the apartment of the latter. Games of seduction, moral confrontation, verbal jousting, complex desires punctuate this "Kammerspiel" in an incisive and frontal way. The French designer exhibits some hundred drawings on various media (paper, tarpaulin...). The exhibition is complemented by a 160-page monograph published by JRP | Ringier and a special serigraphy made for the occasion. “If you look closely at the essential purity of objects designed by Pierre Charpin, you will notice a form of discretion, or even frailty. This delicacy is characteristic of a presence that beckons to us rather than pose as a sign. This “poetic” trait in his work is contributed by drawing. Indeed, for Pierre Charpin, drawing has never been just a step in the object production process. It is a practice in its own right which, on the one hand, singles out his signature and, on the other, reflects a relationship more innate to the form. This is why in recent years the corpus of his work includes – along with sketches of objects finalised upon production – “drawings of drawings”. Produced in large formats, these aspire to no further reality than their own. In series of four, of three or sometimes alone, these drawings provide the opportunity of a direct and immediate approach to the world of forms, in line with his artistic training. For it is first and foremost through drawing that a world emerges, appearing before us. Drawing acquires poetic power through the simple economy of its means – a pencil, a surface – and its desire to bring forth the form. Poiesis, in ancient Greek, tells of the creation of a world… by the power of the gods, by the hand of man. Free from the constraints of production, without any other purpose than that imposed by their own momentum, the forms drawn by Pierre Charpin unfold in playful freedom. This is a search, a journey of hand and thought towards a form that is not yet clear, although he may perhaps glimpse it. By endless repetitions of the same gesture, by chromatic variations on the same line or the same point, this tension becomes a plastic strength, an inner dynamism which involves the viewer s eye in the emergence of form. Since the early 1990s he has devoted himself to designing furniture and objects. He lives and works at Ivry-sur-Seine, near Paris. His practice develops centered on experimental projects – in particular ones conducted with the Centre international de recherche sur le verre et les arts plastiques (CIRVA) from 1998 to 2001 or the Centre de recherche sur les arts du feu et de la terre (CRAFT) between 2003 and 2005 – and in the course of his collaborations with renowned manufacturers such as Alessi, Cristallerie de Saint-Louis, Ligne Roset, Manufacture nationale de Sèvres, Montina, Pamar, Tectona, Venini, The Wrong Shop, and Zanotta Edizioni. In 2004 Pierre Charpin was the winner of the international competition for the design of the Eau de Paris carafe, produced in a run of 10,000. He also acts as scenographer for his own exhibitions (at the MUDAC and Grand-Hornu Images) and for themed exhibitions such as Les Sixties mode d emploi (Musée de la Mode et du textile, Paris), Mobiboom (Les Arts Décoratifs, Paris) and Quali Cose Siamo, the third Design Museum Triennial (Milan), organized in 2010 by Alessandro Mendini. Since 2005, after a first solo exhibition of his work in 1999, the Galerie kreo (Paris) has the exclusive right to produce limited editions of his pieces, presented at solo exhibitions: Platform in 2006, All aperto in 2008, 8 1/2 in 2009 and Ignotus Nomen in 2011. ECAL Milan 2014: ECAL & Camper present the film "Training",09.04.2014,Cinema Arlecchino, Milan For the Milan International Furniture Fair 2014, Camper, the Majorcan shoe brand, and the ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne present an exceptional multidisciplinary project at the Arlecchino Cinema on Wednesday 9 April (from 9 pm to midnight). Students of the Master Product Design have made a shop, under the supervision of Bethan Laura Wood, which has been used as the set for “Training”, a short film directed by Jan Czarlewski, a graduate of the ECAL Bachelor Cinema. Images HD The projection of this fiction film is accompanied by a documentary by Arthur Touchais, who is also a graduate of the Bachelor Cinema. All communication materials for this event (graphic design and photography) have been undertaken by former students of ECAL. “ The basic idea was to create a full-size Camper shop in the Studio Cinema of ECAL,and shoot a short film,” explains Ramón Úbeda, the person in charge of the project at Camper. “We wanted this project to be multidisciplinary and for it to bring together many of the different skills taught at the ECAL, especially the Cinema option, that makes this school a unique training centre of its kind.” The first stage was having the students of the Master Product Design create a mock-up of a shop. Under the supervision of the British designer Bethan Laura Wood, they have created an original set, an authentic design piece with two-way mirrors – a special effect that is vital to the script – and shaped like a huge shoe box. “ What is there to film in a Camper shop? To discover the film s concept we were inspired by the company philosophy: humour and jokiness”, reveals Jan Czarlewski, director of this short film lasting around 12 minutes. With that in mind, the film could only be a comedy. The story is about the first day at work of a young stammering, awkward and stressed salesman, who is trained by the shop manager, who is himself an anxious person… This short fictional piece is accompanied by a documentary by Arthur Touchais, narrating the process of putting together the whole project, from making the shop to creating the communication materials, done by Romain Collaud, graduate of the Bachelor in Graphic Design at the ECAL.
