Hidry Project
Hidry

Diego Eiholzer – Hidry Access to water at outdoor events is often a challenge. Hydri is a water station designed to provide a drinking and refreshment spot during festivals, sports events, and institutional gatherings. This innovative unit is built to resemble a standard barrier, making it virtually indestructible and seamlessly integrating into existing barrier rental logistics, ensuring an affordable rental price. Water flows through durable stainless steel pipes and is dispensed in two ways: a linear jet for hand washing, drinking, and filling water bottles, and a directional jet for all other needs.

Averse Project
Averse

Amedeo Oddo – Averse Averse is a rainwater collector designed to support urban community gardens that use permaculture principles to promote food self-sufficiency amid climate emergencies and resource scarcity, reducing dependence on industrial systems. Permaculture emphasizes self-sufficiency and sustainable ecosystems, focusing on cycles and waste reduction. Optimizing water use is crucial, especially as droughts become more frequent. Rainwater, being softer and less calcareous, benefits plants during dry periods and reduces the need for drinking water for irrigation. This rainwater collector, with a capacity of 600 liters, supports a 120m² garden for a week without rain. It s designed with simple manufacturing techniques, using only wood and metal to eliminate microplastics and pollutants.

Ricardo Project
Ricardo

Léa Omez – Ricardo How about an aperitif on the poolside? Ricardo is a seat that allows several people to lounge comfortably on the edge of the pool. Laying both on the edge and in the water, it allows you to sit wherever and however you like. The advantage? Being together and enjoying the freshness of the water in a playful configuration. When there s no need to be used in water, the floating part of Ricardo can be lifted using handles and folded up, transforming the seat into a real outdoor sofa. The inner cushions are stuffed with polystyrene beads, ensuring buoyancy, durability and softness. The outer covers, crafted from breathable polyester for added comfort, are completely removable.

Ermita Project
Ermita

Jacobo Zunzunegui – Ermita "Poverty, Silence, and Order," is the title of my thesis in which I explore the intentional simplicity in Western Monasticism. As a continuation, I designed Ermita, three micro cabins situated along the "Camino de Santiago," a pilgrimage route renowned for fostering introspection. Each cabin is constructed using local masonry techniques from three distinct regions, preserving and promoting these rich but declining construction methods. An important feature of these cabins is the integration of all furniture into the fourth wall, made from wood. These compact shelters offer spaces for sleeping, reading, writing, and warming up, while also creating an atmosphere conducive to silence and contemplation — elements that our modern society still deeply needs.

Rotten Reverie Project
Rotten Reverie

Sunny Attias – Rotten Reverie Rotten Reverie is a series that wrestles with the seemingly random appearance of images and subjects in social media recommended content feeds through the use of personalised algorithms. As someone who often engages with recommended content and finds it both fascinating and sometimes worryingly accurate, I chose to closely analyse the recurring visual patterns and clusters of subjects, forms, and imagery that appear in my recommended content feed. These images serve as testimonies to a certain pattern of content, ephemeral in nature, that once floated in an ocean of visual recommendations. This project attempts to apply a human approach to a machinic logic, specifically addressing a phenomenon that appears to understand some of our thought processes better than we do.

Conversation artificielle Project
Conversation artificielle

Sacha Dufour – Conversation artificielle Artificial Conversation is a fluid language - an exploration of liquid forms as they interact with the body. This work merges human and technology to propose a new process for creating jewelry. Using photography combined with artificial intelligence, I compose images destined to become jewelry. Experimenting with different techniques, crossing, and superimposing them until an idea is reached. I search for the form that embodies the liquid, sculpting artificial images in the same way I compose photographs. It s a game between a body, a liquid and an intelligence that needs to be guided.

Crocodium Project
Crocodium

Alix Malamaire – Crocodium For many years, alligator straps have graced luxury watches, giving them a unique identity. Crocodium is inspired by this iconic material to develop a titanium reproduction using 3D printing. As a tribute, it responds to ethical needs by revealing a new visual of the alligator. The concept is being developed in the design of a watch featuring this pattern: the aim is to place the alligator as a protector of time, by applying the concept to the caseback of a reversible watch, which protects the gimbal and offers the option of wearing it as a watch or as an alligator strap.

Retrobruta Project
Retrobruta

John Stagaman – Retrobruta Retrobruta is a series of speakers inspired by architecture, simple geometry and radical design. The foundation of simple, geometric shapes which overlap results in a distinctive home object while being easy to manufacture, repair or dispose of. Some speakers utilize a recycled polystyrene sheet material created by Polygood, which provides interesting color & texture. The material is comprised of plastic formerly used in electronics - now given a new life in these objects in the same category. The designs serve as an example of how these advancements in sustainable, recycled plastics can be used in everyday products. Taking the form of miniature architectures - the speakers blend into the home environment and can stand alone as a design object on a shelf or countertop.

Rase Campagne Project
Rase Campagne

Loïs de Goumoëns – Rase Campagne Rase Campagne is a feature-length comedy screenplay project. It tells the story of Elia, a helpful and polite young woman from Vaud, Switzerland, who lives in fear of disturbing... or even worse, of disappointing. One day, a ZAD arrives in her quiet region and through an unfortunate combination of circumstances, we believe she is one of the ZADists! Elia will try to prove the opposite but the adventure will prove difficult when the different forces present try to rally her to their cause. In this story, I am interested in probing Swiss “neutrality” and the consequences of refusing commitment, whether emotional or political. The project is at the V1 stage and is therefore under development.

B+ Project
B+

Gabriella Duck Garnham – B+ Switzerland s mobility infrastructure comprises of dynamic transport modes, from ‘hard steel tracks of train lines to ‘soft elements of buses and bikes. Soft elements are often the most accessible, making them essential in the mobility network to encourage people to use public transport. Traditionally, soft mobility infrastructure has been monumental, featuring concrete foundations and structures resistant to adaptation. Hence, they are difficult to adapt to the evolving needs of cities as they shift and grow, resulting in additional resources and even demolition. B+ is an ephemeral bus shelter for Transport Lausanne, designed to be secured on-site using local stone and timber, allowing for agile infrastructure that can shift and integrate with neighbourhoods as they develop.

uien Project
uien

Lilian Onstenk – uien Many discarded jackets have malfunctioning zippers. Before repurposing, textiles and hardware need to be separated within the recycling facilities—a labor-intensive procedure. The uien collection proposes a system in which the fabric and the zipper are easily exchangeable and separable. The cotton inner lining is connected to the water-resistant cotton outer fabric. Similar to a pillowcase, the felted wool insulation is encapsulated between the cotton layers without using additional fastening systems. The slightly modified zipper ties into the fabric and can easily be removed and replaced. uien aims for easier recycling but above all encourages consumers to replace broken items without special equipment or prior knowledge.

Aurelia Pleyer – With kind regards The way we work is changing. Today, we no longer stay at a fixed desk in a single place but need flexibility and movement. As we perform a variety of tasks during the day, we wish for an equally diverse range of spaces to create, concentrate, communicate, and think within. With Kind Regards proposes an open way of working on two surfaces. Sitting or standing, the furniture explores different possibilities of work situations. The simple and direct, yet versatile structure uses wood to create a warm, welcoming surrounding. Encouraging to work in new ways, With kind regards is a flexible place for both short and longer E-Mails.

ilo

Loïs Weber – ilo A report from the Swiss Office for the Environmental forecasts annual summer heatwaves, increasing the number of «tropical» days (>30°C) throughout the year. In response to this phenomenon, some Swiss cities are seeking solutions to combat these urban heat islands. The Ilo project proposes a solution to address heatwaves in Lausanne. In collaboration with a local brick manufacturer, the cooling potential of bricks, which absorb and slowly evaporate water, has been harnessed in a modular seating installation, providing shade and refreshment. Adaptable to various locations, this installation can be deployed during the four months of summer heatwaves, thus improving urban comfort and fostering social interactions.

Itinérant Project
Itinérant

Simon Memel – Itinérant Itinérant takes Robert Granjon s work as its starting point, producing a type family of four cuts: a text and display roman, each with a corresponding italic. The text cuts pare back some of the extravagance that Granjon was famous for, and lower the contrast in order to create type suitable for continuous setting, especially in smaller sizes. In part they draw on historical typefaces which themselves were influenced by Granjon- namely Plantin and Times New Roman. The display cuts reference the writing masters that preceded Granjon, and influenced the masters work. They restore the details that were removed in the rendering of the text cuts, and go further still, creating characters more calligraphic than Granjon, but rendered with a contemporary cleanness.

Nimonic

Naiqian Mac Wang – Nimonic Nimonic is designed to help Chinese native speakers learn English, the typeface addresses common problems Chinese English learners would likely encounter, such as stress placement, vowel reduction, and unfamiliar phonemes. Based on letter identification and legibility research, the letterforms are drawn to emphasize their idiosyncrasies, resulting in subtle yet quirky features that purposefully slow down the reading process of the learner. The combined technical and aesthetic considerations allow Nimonic to maintain a familiar first impression while hosting many unorthodox details, like having a vague gist memory instead of a vivid verbatim memory.

Inspired by the diorama museal device, this installation offers a dynamic and immersive showcase for the canton of Vaud, highlighting four key areas: Innovation, Education, Culture and Sport. It presents a varied portrait of the canton and offers a current view of its activities. In this way, the canton of Vaud reveals itself as a center of excellence for research and innovation, a cutting-edge learning ground, a mecca for cultural creation and a sports ecosystem that is unique in the world. Images and text come alive and intermingle in a meticulously orchestrated choreography. International sporting events, the headquarters of major federations, prestigious cultural institutions, renowned universities and colleges, top-level scientific and technical research centers - these are the strengths that the canton brings to the stage and into the spotlight in this creation. Initiated during an experimental workshop with students to generate initial graphic intentions, the project was then developed within ECAL s Visual Communication department in collaboration with ECAL s Technology Center.

So, how can we live better? Project
So, how can we live better?

So, how can we live better? Beyond questions of functionality, comfort and individual or collective well-being, the built environment is capable of responding in a stimulating way to societal, energy and environmental challenges. Workplaces, homes, public spaces, interiors and streets are all driven by real statements of intent that motivate their design. The 2nd year Graphic Design students worked on a communication based on one of these principles (or others) and on the architectural creation that refers to it in order to promote it. Ailleurs Ici Édition Ailleurs Ici is the story of 132 route de la Fruitière. During their retirement, the two former teachers René and Anne-Marie Favre explored the world. Their travels are above all encounters, the interests of enthusiasts. A history book of faraway lands for René, and a fantastic but tangible herbarium for Annie. But when they return from these expeditions, it s their house that changes. As if undergoing a second metamorphosis. The old renovated barn at 132 Route de la Fruitière has been given a final chrysalis. The walls are filled with colourful objects and prints of exotic negatives. The stones here are filled with prints from elsewhere. Without intending to, René and Annie have turned 132 Route la Fruitière into a museum inhabited by its curators. Elsewhere Here is their catalogue, retracing each of René and Annie s journeys through objects as mystical as they are foreign. Par LEs vieux Blocs Édition Les vieux blocs traces the history of a group of buildings in the Marolles district of Brussels. Emblematic of Art Nouveau architecture, it now represents a meeting point between a social building and an architectural one. This project invites us to explore this controversial dynamic by bringing together the tourist side and the social side in the same architecture, with a testimonial from a neighbour and images of tourists strolling through the district. Par Terrain Gurzelen Édition It s important, even temporarily, to create parentheses in society, bubbles of utopia that can burst at any moment. The energy that emanates from these ephemeral moments is unique. Gurz is a sensory stroll that hijacks, appropriates and translates the materiality of the Terrain de la Gurzelen, a football pitch temporarily occupied by the residents of the city of Biel. The aim is to leave a trace of the life of this surreal place, which will soon disappear. Par 14 21 Vidéo This simulation shows the duality between the inflows and the threats posed by the Grande Dixence dam to the population of the valleys below. It traces the hypothetical course of water from the dam to the town of Sierre. Par CITY STADIUM LEAGUE Édition The city stadium is a multi-purpose urban facility designed for sporting activities and an ideal meeting place for local residents, reinforcing social cohesion. CITY STADIUM LEAGUE, halfway between the famous vignette collection albums and reportage, is an immersive object retracing an amateur football tournament held on 7 and 8 May 2024 in Renens. It highlights not only the sporting event itself, but also the social and unifying impact of the event. Par Hotel à gogo Édition The aim was to pay homage to the abandoned Grand Hôtel Chaumont & Golf in Neuchâtel. Having closed, because it was recluse of any civilization, in the heights of Neuchâtel. At the time it was in operation, the hotel used to organise themed activities to attract customers, but these were unsuccessful and the hotel went bankrupt. So I based the concept of my edition on this theme, recreating melancholy costume scenes inside the hotel, as if someone had never stopped carrying out these activities in this place frozen in time. I did all this with the help of official documents I d picked up on the spot, such as activity reports and flyers promoting the evenings, the bands, the fancy dress costumes and the concerts. These are included in the edition to accompany the photographic sequence. Par

Redesign 23-24 - S2 As part of the course given by Giliane Cachin, 1st year students are required to produce an edition by examining the different axes that make it up. The course offers a study of various grid systems and the fundamentals of micro-typography. During the semester, students will look for the best way to structure and arrange the content they have chosen (or which has been assigned to them, depending on the semester s data). Some essential rules to know in terms of printing and bindings will be reviewed at the end of the semester, in order to bring the conceptualized object to life. Service Design - 2024 Project
Service Design - 2024

Service Design - 2024 During the Service Design course, the 3rd year of the Graphic Design, Photography and Media & Interaction Design bachelors had to create multi-media projects. A collaboration of the Visual Communication department which had as subject the SDGs (*Sustainable Development Goals). The theme was called "For a good cause, make the SDGs a reality" and its objective was to allow students to develop a cause that is close to their hearts. Each project consists of at least two different media, one primary and one secondary. These projects could take any form that the students deemed relevant, be it a website, editions, posters, a video sequence or virtual reality. The SDGs are meant to be achieved globally by all United Nations member states by 2030. This entails all states equally playing their part in seeking common solutions to the world s urgent challenges. Switzerland is also obligated to implement these goals at the national level. Furthermore, incentives must be created to encourage non-governmental actors to increasingly contribute to sustainable development. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), along with their 169 targets, constitute the core of the Agenda 2030. They integrate the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development and, for the first time, place poverty eradication and sustainable development on the same agenda.Your Email s Carbon Footprint Poster & Website This project comprises a website that explores various aspects of the carbon footprint of emails and the different ways in which they contribute to CO2 emissions. To make this information more accessible, the carbon footprint figures of emails are illustrated using concrete and familiar examples for the general public, such as kilometers driven by cars or the energy consumption of household appliances. In order to raise awareness among a broad audience, we have introduced a mascot named Bob, who serves as a guide through this information. Posters summarize the three main elements of the site: the CO2 emissions from emails, solutions to reduce this footprint, and an introduction to Bob. They encourage the public to visit the website to learn more. By , & SHIEn Website & Moving Poster Our project aims to raise awareness among 18-24 year olds about the social and environmental issues of ultra fast fashion, focusing specifically on the case of the giant SHEIN. The idea is to dissect each step of the ordering process by revealing behind-the-scenes aspects through an interactive experience that incorporates social media codes. By , & back to Newspaper & Video We have created a project aimed at promoting sustainable cosmetics. This project highlights the adoption of solid cosmetics in a zero waste approach. It raises awareness and informs about an effective and simple alternative, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing sustainable solutions that are respectful of both people and the environment. REMIND ME I'M ALIVE Project
REMIND ME I'M ALIVE

REMIND ME I M ALIVE REMIND ME I M ALIVE is a companion that combines the functions of a fidget toy with those of a personal reminder. The gadget uses information on Wifi connections in its immediate vicinity to better understand the user s environment. By examining these connections - the only gateway to the outside world - the gadget can tell whether the user is in a busy or quiet environment, and even give indications of possible stressful situations. When the user is not interacting with the device, it constantly monitors his or her status via the surrounding wifi connections. These connections provide implicit information on social conditions, working environments, infrastructures and much more. If the user does not communicate with the companion for more than six hours, it “dies” and must be resuscitated. This feature underlines the need for regular interaction and ensures that the companion is always ready for use.

BY HAND Even if it seems that digital is taking over analog, there s still an interest and need for us as humans to have a physical connection to our daily tools. So many designers swear by their drawing routine and real-life experimentation still plays a important role in our practices. Under the guidance of Friederike Daumiller students took the challenge to design their own interpretations of hand writing and hand drawing instruments always referring to their hands-on tests and experience.

ECAL x FREITAG - Access over ownership Project
ECAL x FREITAG - Access over ownership

ECAL x FREITAG - Access over ownership Second-year industrial design students collaborated with Zurich-based brand FREITAG Lab, leveraging their expertise in environmental awareness, material upcycling, and the circular economy. Using the FREITAG manifesto as a foundation, they developed new shared products centered on the principle of "access over ownership." Under the direction of designer Christophe Guberan, students have explored various options for borrowable items. Particularly relevant for temporary-use clothing, accessories, and furniture, this approach enabled the young designers to benefit from FREITAG s expertise in circular economy, material upcycling, services, product development and disruptive innovation. “Design has the responsibility and power to make positive changes towards a circular future. We shared our know-how with the students to raise their awareness of this vision”, says FREITAG Circle Lead Product Design and Development Tu Van Giang. Seeking to fundamentally alter the consumer experience through product design itself, ECAL and FREITAG invite consumers to rethink their relationship with goods while adopting a more sustainable and conscious lifestyle.NEBULA by Disposable plastic ponchos are often used by tourists as a quick fix to stay warm and dry while travelling, but they are as quickly worn out as they are quickly discarded. Made from reclaimed B-grade car airbag textile, NEBULA is designed to replace single-use plastic ponchos. Designed to be as simple as possible to produce, one size fits all and easy to clean and maintain, without compromising on quality and comfort. The ponchos would be borrowed and returned to FREITAG stores, but could also be returned to hotels or mailboxes for convenient retrieval while travelling. Pairs stylishly with the FLAT BOOTS overshoes. FLAT BOOTS by , Most of us own rain boots that we only use a few days a year, according to the weather. FLAT BOOTS are waterproof overshoes that you can borrow for as long as you need them for those rainy days, outdoor activities, or if you ve forgotten your boots when you re on the road. The overshoe features a thermo-welded heavy-duty tarp upper and a rubber sole. Its unique split sole design allows the boots to be rolled up for easy storage and optimised production. Combined with the NEBULA poncho, they would keep you dry while you re out and about. PACK-A-ROOM by , & Thought for students who are most likely to move from one flat to another, study abroad for a semester or have an extra flatmate for a few months, PACK-A-ROOM is a collection of flatpack furniture that is easy to transport and assemble. Made from B-grade airbag and tarp, fitted on a frame made of standard pipes and robust Maker Pipe connectors; the use of modular and detachable connecting parts allows for durable, expandable systems and extends the life cycle of the furniture. Comprising a bed, wardrobe and chair, you would have everything you need to feel at home in just a few turns of hex key. FIESTA KIT by It s party time! You go to the corner shop to buy everything you need: disposable plates, disposable glasses, disposable napkins and, of course, decorations, garlands and disposable balloons, all of which will be thrown away at the end of the day. The FIESTA KIT offers an alternative to disposable garlands and balloons. Made from truck tarp off-cuts from FREITAG bag production, rolled up in a handy pouch, it is a unique and colourful decoration option for celebrating more consciously. F-BÖÖTLE by In Switzerland, river drifting is a popular activity for groups of friends and families. As soon as the temperatures rise, everyone grabs their paddles and pumps and drifts down the river in brightly-coloured rubber boats. Unfortunately, many of these inflatable boats are abandoned on the banks, sometimes after just one use. The problem has become so serious that some towns, like Bern, have taken action by installing massive permanent containers to help maintain the shores of the Aare river. The inflatable F-BÖÖTLE, made from a tractor inner tube combined with truck tarp and safety belts, offers a sustainable alternative for this summertime water adventure. Designed to be easily inflated and deflated, it can be effortlessly rolled up into a backpack for convenient carrying. AIRtube by Translating FREITAG s bag-making expertise to the furniture industry is perhaps a bit of a stretch. Applying its radical principles to furniture rental, however, makes perfect sense. AIRTUBE is an inflatable sofa system made from dead-stock tractor inner tubes and seatbelt webbing. One section of the sofa is made up of four inner tubes constrained and shaped by straps. Each element can accommodate two people and could be easily transported from a FREITAG store to wherever you need it. AIRTUBE is a sturdy, playful and comfy option for events, parties, indoors or out on a sunny day relaxing in a park. shift by When we move from one home to another, we consume a lot of items in a short space of time — cardboard boxes, bags, all sorts of tapes, bubble wrap, etc. — most of which end up in the rubbish or, at best, in a recycling bin. SHIFT is a reusable moving kit made up of a series of sturdy, box-shaped tarp bags ranging in size from 43L, 62L and 82L, plus a long, thin bag for all bulky items. You could borrow as many bags as you need from your local FREITAG store, for a carefree move.

SLAP ! Project
SLAP !

SLAP ! Whether it s a parade, a particle accelerator or a dance ball, SLAP invites you to inhabit a space from a gravitational perspective. Positioned on the boundary between two and three dimensions, the works are subject to centrifugal laws and find themselves exchanging with one another to create fortuitous narratives, as if the continuous round of which they were a part of had suddenly come to a halt. The exhibition space becomes the site of a fundamentally social event - in terms of the works it hosts and the exhibition context - and reveals the social perspective that the works hold in rela- tion to each other. Like a boring chat with a friend of a friend, some pieces are overwhelmed by their conversations, while others lend themselves easily to them. You ll have no hesitation in intercepting some of the phrases exchanged between the works, while having the opportunity to: reply/nego- tiate/argue with the social time-space that SLAP, as a real static meeting point, offers for an evening.

“The Eskimo in the Mojave Desert”: Herbert Matter, a Designer Across Scenes and Genres Project
“The Eskimo in the Mojave Desert”: Herbert Matter, a Designer Across Scenes and Genres

“The Eskimo in the Mojave Desert”: Herbert Matter, a Designer Across Scenes and Genres Matter s career was that of a multidisciplinary, international designer working across commerce and culture. He was not only a graphic artist but also a photographer, type designer, art director, teacher and film-maker. His work in the field of advertising and editorial design, his collaborations with artists, his self-commissioned work, his photography and film outputs and his long-serving position as an educator provide as many entry points to analyse the impact of migration and an international network on a graphic designer s career. It also provides a case study to analyse the professional model of the designer working as photographer and layout artist simultaneously. The historiography on the Swiss graphic designer and photographer Herbert Matter (1907–1984) is characterised by a dichotomy. On the one hand, his oeuvre is partially well-known; some of his works are regarded as amongst “the most celebrated posters in design history” and have been published so widely that they make him a canonical figure of the highest degree. On the other hand, scholarship on his career is often shallow, repetitive and limited to the recurrent reproductions of a few selected artefacts. As is often the case with the canon, Matter s high visibility does not translate into a refined understanding of his work. Scholarship fails to contextualise him as a multifaceted graphic designer, photographer, and film-maker whose career did not fit within a specific style or movement, but reflected influences ranging from French poster artists, Swiss modernism and American pop culture. His profile was so unusual that the American graphic designer Paul Rand, who was active in corporate identity and branding, quipped: “I have always had the feeling that H[erbert] M[atter] on Madison Avenue was like an Eskimo in the Mohavi [sic] desert”, that is an out-of-place character in the world of New York advertising. The present project therefore provides a more nuanced discourse on Matter s career by relating his visual work to his influences and his migration between the three scenes in which he was active: Switzerland, France and the United States. It answers the following question: How did Herbert Matter s migration, transnational experiences and network shape his approach to graphic design?ApplicantsDr Jonas Berthod Prof. Gilles GavilletResearch teamDr Jonas Berthod (ECAL) Prof. Louise Paradis (Université du Québec à Montréal UQAM) Prof. Gilles Gavillet (ECAL)Period1.12.2023 – 31.1.2025Supported byHES-SO, Réseau de Compétences Design et Arts Visuels RCDAV

Fiction film workshop with Carmen Jaquier Project
Fiction film workshop with Carmen Jaquier

Fiction film workshop with Carmen Jaquier The 2023 fiction film workshop for 2nd year students was lead by swiss director Carmen Jaquier. Head of workshop: "The initial proposal was to leave room for the students desires and quests, while offering a simple framework for the making of their second-year film. We worked from a single set, as vast as Michelangelo Frammartino s and the exhausted interior architecture of John Cassavetes characters. Together, we looked for simple, accessible, everyday ways of nurturing a story and characters. We wanted to capture gestures, ways of speaking, and significant details in people we know and don t know. We came up with "A Rock", a sort of collection of images, thoughts and interactions, with the idea of expanding the universe of the films. To avoid the black holes of writing, we set ourselves in action, in movement. We imagined the shoots as parties, and danced with Aurélien. Collages and skeletons invaded the white walls of the school, revealing the films to come. On the big screen, I watch, moved, two young brothers tearing themselves apart over a lie, three friends in a frenzy just before separation, a young man absorbed by his need for power, a friend giving in under the weight of the mountain, two sisters who have made a promise to each other, a son who summons his father s spirit through music, the love and death rites of a young kendoka, a group of girlfriends in search of an inner voice, and a fragmented young man, before the end of the world." The Manufacture of Type for Typewriters in Switzerland Project
The Manufacture of Type for Typewriters in Switzerland

The Manufacture of Type for Typewriters in Switzerland Between the 1940s and the 1990s, three companies manufactured type components for typewriters in Switzerland: Caractères SA, Setag and Novatype. During more than fifty years, they supplied the biggest manufacturers of office machines in Europe and around the world, such as IBM, Remington, Olivetti, Paillard-Hermès or Triumph-Adler. Having held a leading position worldwide, the three manufacturers played a key role in the design, development, and production of type components and typefaces for typewriters, as well as for all kinds of impact printers. By looking in details at their production methods, the research observes what influence did the manufacturing processes and the mechanical characteristics of the typewriter have on the design of the typefaces. Additionally, it takes interest into the surprising role played by the criminal police. Specialized in the dating and identification of typewriter typefaces for judicial and criminal purposes, forensic experts developed over the years specific methods and compiled rich documentations on typewriter typefaces. Being in direct contact with the type manufacturers to gain first-hand information, they even interfered in the design of some lettershapes. Based on oral history and archival research, this project aims to shed light on this little-known part of the industrial and typographic history.Main applicantSophie Wietlisbach, researcherResearch teamDavide Fornari, scientific supervisor Roland Früh, scientific supervisorPeriod01.01.2023–31.12.2024Supported byECAL / University of Art and Design, internal research grant DNP Foundation for Cultural Promotion, DNP Graphic Culture Research Grant

The City of Renens 2023 Encouragement Prize was awarded to two ECAL students, (Bachelor Industrial Design) and (Master Type Design). In the wake of this encounter, they have created "Praxis", an innovative collection of design objects that evoke simplicity. In an increasingly multi-faceted world that adapts to our individual needs, this exhibition invites us to reflect on the essence of objects. In so doing, it offers a counterpoint to the complexification that prevails in the field of design. By breaking down the elements of our environment, the designers have arrived at refined building blocks that can be used to design a wide range of objects. THEY – ECAL x LE CONSORTIUM Event
THEY – ECAL x LE CONSORTIUM

THEY – ECAL x LE CONSORTIUM,27.10.2023–31.03.2024,Dijon The Consortium Museum and ECAL present THEY, the culmination of the research project "The Raving Age. Histories and Figures of Youth" by the Master of Visual Arts. THEY, is not about us. It is the statement of a shortfall, a gap... Given this external perspective, how can we express the condition and creativity of a virtualized collective body? How can we get around the deadlocks of traditional differences, innocence, and primary inventiveness? The THEY exhibition seeks to create a diffracted image of youth – a community without community, thriving in a dissolved, uncertain world where referents move freely, unburdened by hierarchies, and transcending generational and gender constraints. The exhibition delves into the emergence of languages and forms, exploring how the foundations of a lexicon are established, and how a new way of making art, of being “contemporary” comes about. These contemporary perspectives presume acts of ownership, disappearance, ventriloquism, and the emergence of many social, interpersonal, political, and esthetic practices and experiments – always in action and opposing the inertia of walls. THEY thus establishes human maps, a sort of moral fable home to all kinds of affects and relationships of identification and indifference – forms of disappearance, a spectral base which leads us, in a certain way, into these worlds where virtuality reigns. It is a temporary refuge for “wild young people”: dissidents of systems and borders, creators of shapes, bodies, vehicles, and multiplicities, who want life, and not capital, to breed. THEY, is not about us. It is the statement of a shortfall, a gap. Given this external perspective, how can we express the condition and creativity of a virtualized collective body? How can we get around the deadlocks of traditional differences, innocence, and primary inventiveness? Can it be achieved by not doing sociology against a backdrop of existential and esthetic crisis? By freeing ourselves from a senile passion for whatever moves, lives, and rebels? How can we conceive of this transitional creature, unable to solidify in its unfinished forms, and instead very much ready to give in, so to speak, to its own unspecialized and powerful youth, turning away from any destiny and specific environment, and holding on to nothing else but its own immaturity and ignorance? The THEY exhibition is the final chapter of the research project titled “The Raving Age. Histoires et figures de la jeunesse”, directed by Vincent Normand, Philippe Azoury and Shirin Yousefi. This project is an integral part of ECAL s Master s degree in Visual Arts.1 Developed over a two-year period, the program is based on various cross-disciplinary activities including production, analysis and workshops, with many artists, thinkers, writers and students taking part in it. The platform at www.theravingage.com archives a list of all exchanges and conferences in that context. The exhibition mirrors a unique collaborative experience between a museum and an art school. Invited artists and students worked closely together during the various stages of the exhibition process, such as design and communication (Lorenzo Benzoni and Luca Frati), scenographic design with David Douard, a reality TV show directed by Sara Sadik, and even a performative piece by Gabriele Garavaglia. Some of the exhibited pieces were created specifically for this particular occasion, such as those by Julien Ceccaldi, Nicolas Ceccaldi, Mélanie Matranga, Gabriele Garavaglia, Exotourisme (Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster & Perez) and Jill Mulleady. Additional existing works were chosen for their specific resonance with the project. These include pieces by David Douard, Morag Keil, Caroline Poggi & Jonathan Vinel and David Wojnarowicz, a truly influential and dreaded figure of youth. Thanks to Matthijs Erdman, Marion Scemama and to galleries Isabella Bortolozzi, Berlin; Chantal Crousel, Paris; Fitzpatrick, Paris and New Galerie, Paris. OPENINGFriday 27 October 2023 - 6pm Performance by with the participation of ECAL alumni and students:  , , et DATES & SCHEDULE27.10.2023 - 31.03.2024 Monday to Friday 9am - 4pm Free entryADDRESS37 rue de Longvic 21000 Dijon, France HEAD OF PROGRAMMEHEAD OF THE RESEARCH PROJECT, Philippe Azoury et  ASSISTANTARTISTS & · · · · Exotourisme (Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster & Perez) · , · · · & · et  WEBSITESleconsortium.fr theravingage.com
