How to sell online Project
How to sell online

Léo Paschoud – How to sell online This work takes the form of a series of three books compiling images from conversations collected on various online second-hand sales sites. A specific protocol defines the message sent to the sellers to obtain a photo in return. Each book focuses on a specific object: the camera, the mirror, and the laptop webcam. The aim of this project is to explore the behavior of online sellers. To obtain the desired image, with the correct shooting angle, the process relies on their desire to sell these objects and allows for the observation of their different reactions. If the protocol is successful, images are received; otherwise, responses of indignation, annoyance, insults, or even silence are encountered.

Disparitions

Rebecca Alfandary – Disparitions Everything is fated to disappear. This non-exhaustive collection explores the plurality of the manifestations and forms of impermanence, its impacts, its causes, as well as its different timescales. Great and little stories inhabit the same space, and make information and interpretation come together. Text and images, both linked and independent of each other, illustrate each subject and create a dialogue. Throughout the book, a series of interludes give it a more sensible dimension, by referring to our relationship with the ephemeral. The whole is both a testimony and a tribute to what is disappearing, what has disappeared, what will disappear.

Valentin Bonzon – Sueños entre paginas, les rêves entre les pages Inspired by Gabriel García Márquez s Nobel Prize speech, I went to Bogotá to document a journey exploring the power of reading and writing in a city marked by violence and corruption. The project compiles initiatives promoting reading and writing, highlighting the importance of literature in Colombia. The main chapters address various topics, such as writing workshops for youth affected by armed conflicts or the extensive system of public libraries. Interspersed between these chapters are historical fragments providing context. Finally, poems printed on handmade papers and inserts from second-hand books found in Bogotá structure the work, giving it a unique form.

Edizioni Arche Project
Edizioni Arche

Edizioni Arche Edizioni Arche unites the idea of inclusion under the umbrella of a publishing house that has as its founding pillars ‘always act in such a way as to maximise the number of possibilities , a quote from the philosopher Von Foester, which we try to apply in our diploma. The importance of enabling fluent reading and understanding is a primordial concept: everyone should have the right to read and understand. Graphic design conveys this possibility. Arche researches and explores accessible editorial responses to all cases, from comprehension difficulties, motor problems, visual impairments or the simple desire to empathise with others. No less important, books aimed at a wider audience are not excluded: they raise the necessary awareness of sometimes underestimated problems.

L inventaire is an exhibition catalogue that tells its own story, and that happened in accordance with its own chronology. It invites you to take a closer look at the prologue, which describes the research process, to wander through its heart, which was printed during the opening, with a system of retranscription and live printing, and to thank you in the epilogue, which reverently marks the end of its production. In this way, the book becomes an exhibition space, then returns to its original form.

Villa Trudy

Lisa Grobet – Villa Trudy Listening to the walls, perceiving the imprints they bear, remembering the ghosts of the past. Villa Trudy, in Sardinia, is a house marked by the passage of many lives. A father teaching his son to swim, this son becoming a father in turn. The walls bear witness to the changes and traces left by our ancestors. They observe the events that unfold within the house, but remain passive. In a way, they are the guardians of the place, witnesses of an invisible absence. Through sensitive intervention on the remnants of the place, this book aspires to become, in turn, the guardian of memories that would otherwise no longer be tangible, offering a new form of transmission. This project pays tribute to the soul of Villa Trudy by preserving its heritage.

Delphine Moënnat – Le Soleil a dit qu il reviendrait There are places where the sun promises to return, where its rays glide over faces marked by the trials of life. Le Radeau is one of those places. Le Soleil a dit qu il reviendrait invites us to enter, to listen to the rustle of whispers, to observe the discreet gestures that tell stories — their stories. This book explores the lives of those who inhabit this place, through intimate conversations; the border between their world and ours is almost imperceptible. We slip in quietly, as if entering a dream, and realize that these people are not strangers. They could be our brothers, our sisters, our children, or our friends. It is a book that speaks to our hearts, inviting us to reach out, to listen, and to understand.

Luca Riva – Attitude as Tool – The graphic language of context Attitude as Tool is a research project on the practice of graphic design through the use of context. The project develops into a book that proposes a working method that invites designers to work in unconventional contexts, integrating them into their professional practice and using these contexts to develop tools, ideas and processes. Derived from a way of observing the world related to the concept of "Adhocism" and encouraging self-production, unlikely combinations of what is at hand, common or unusual materials are integrated into the creation process. Mistakes, unintentional and situational gestures shape unexpected results.

24 Project
24

Lorane Hochstätter – 24 This book explores the complexity of the development of a girl s feminine identity through the education and gaze of her mother, the first and most powerful model of femininity. My mother, former model, seemed to emerge from a magazine cover: the embodiment of overwhelming norms of feminine representation. Our image develops in a mirror: she projects herself onto me, remembering what she was and inspecting what she no longer is; I project myself onto her, seeing what I would like to be but what I am not. These self-portraits twist and disguise my body, caught between emancipation and subordination to imposed codes. This book deals with the love-rejection relationship between a mother and her daughter, who accompany and evolve together in a never-ending quest: the search for a feminine identity.

Nos vies sur vos murs

Anna von Allmen – Nos vies sur vos murs Nos vies sur vos murs (Our lives on your walls) grew out of a collaboration with fourteen young people from the Pierre-à-Bot neighbourhood in the heights of Neuchâtel. Over a six-month period, I organised workshops with young people aged between seven and twelve, which formed the basis of this experiment. During our meetings, I initiated discussions around the theme of love, a feeling that is often so complex to grasp. I shared moments of their lives with them, collected their texts and asked them to use disposable cameras to draw pictures of love. In this book, our visions come together to create a portrait of the neighbourhood and the imaginary worlds that develop there.

Sasha Iatsenia – LittleCubes Today, 1 in 15 children are affected by a disorder that alters their behaviors, impacting their educational, socialization, and communication skills. LittleCubes were designed as therapeutic toys to help develop these skills through light and play. Using a cube that lights up and responds to natural gestures, therapists can create fun and engaging exercises using an intuitive app. While designing this project, I discovered that I have autistic traits, inspiring me to build a toy I would have loved as a child. My goal is to build bridges between neurotypical and neurodiverse experiences, making the world more inclusive for all. To date, I have tested the cube with more than 15 therapists and 30 children (ASD, motor deficiencies and associated disorders). I hope to continue this project after my diploma. This project is supported by Fondation Dr Combe.

This innovative tool cultivates creativity and sensitivity, improving cognitive, motor, emotional, and social development by balancing digital and manual experiences. Through sound and movement generated by vibration, children can explore and understand material properties, enriching their growth. As Charles Eames said, "the best preparation is a general education" that fosters sensitivity to life s forces. Stimuli embodies this principle, offering a holistic educational experience.

Nina Pacherová – We Won t Tell Daddy! We Won t Tell Daddy! takes a speculative look at the impact of sharenting - the phenomenon whereby parents excessively share their children s lives on social networks. In the form of a video installation, it explores the future consequences of the digital footprint that parents create for their children. It focuses on the TikTok #bathroomchallenge, where children are recorded cursing, and unaware of the future implications, their video is shared online. The project uses AI and deepfake technology to protect children s identities by replacing their faces with that of the author and highlights the abuse of content. At the same time, it encourages us to redefine the role of technology in our lives by using deepfake as a protective tool.

Elle rêvait des loups

Amélie Tricaud – Elle rêvait des loups This work illustrates an attraction to the masculine, a deep desire to be embodied in a different body, assumed to be my opposite. This obsession, built through the accumulation of male images, shows what I covet, what I wish to carry within myself, without being able to access it. Throughout the 250 pages of the book, I question my gaze and my notion of beauty by idealizing these bodies, objectifying them, or reducing them to abstraction, attempting to subvert gendered and stereotypical ideals of femininity and masculinity. It is a reflection on the idea of the muse, reversing the power dynamics between the female muse and the male artist, and a mirror on the vast existing corpus representing female figures, on how their bodies are always depicted, scrutinized, fragmented, and contorted.

Gilian Cardaci – Pitch Green This work documents the issues surrounding a professional football field and its artificial maintenance. The turf on these pitches must be maintained to comply with the high standards dictated by FIFA to enhance the image of the sport. Specific tools have been developed to meet this demand. Pitch Green turns football on its head with a fascination for what goes on behind the scenes, creating an imagery reminiscent of science fiction. The contrast between the natural turf and these ultra-technological tools lends an absurd edge to their real purpose. These pitches, which appear perfect to the viewer, reveal the excesses of football and its corrupt business.

Shaping the future of cinema: ECAL listen to their graduates

Shaping the future of cinema: ECAL listen to their graduates Just a few days before the opening of the Locarno Film Festival 2024, where several ECAL films will be shown, ECAL and HEAD unveil the results of a survey aimed at shaping the future of cinema training. To guide the development of their HES-SO Bachelor s and Master s programs in Film, the Film Departments at ECAL and HEAD have collaborated to conduct a survey of their graduates. To carry out this project, the research and polling institute gfs.bern was commissioned to design the online questionnaire, while the Observatoire romand de la culture was responsible for organizing focus groups. This is the first initiative of its kind to be carried out among film graduates. Two key findings emerge from the survey: 77% of graduates surveyed are currently working in the film industry Nearly 2/3 of graduates surveyed would choose to study film at ECAL or HEAD again The aim is to fine-tune ECAL and HEAD film courses by analyzing the career paths and feedback on the academic experience of the last fifteen graduating classes. This information is essential for making informed decisions to improve the curricula.

Documentary film workshop with Alessandro Comodin

Documentary film workshop with Alessandro Comodin The 2024 documentary film workshop for 2nd year students was lead by french italian director Alessandro Comodin. Head of workshop: "To make a film, you have to take into account so many variables that it may seem impossible. If we accept this ontological impossibility and the imperfection it entails, the greatest variable to be confronted in filming becomes the self. How, then, to film the Other? How do we portray them? How do we accept that the film will also be a portrait of ourselves? How do you strike a balance between the Other and yourself? How, finally, can we work on our own style, our own unconscious inclinations, our own tastes and desires, without letting ourselves be influenced by forms and images we ve already seen? We worked in the simplest, most artisanal way possible, going back to the very basics of cinematic grammar. We desacralized mise-en-scène, reducing it as much as possible to a question of light, frame, out-of-frame, sound... In this way, we were able to touch the heart of our craft with our own hands: the most important thing when we make a film is the people we re filming, the bond that binds us, the desire and pleasure of immortalizing them...and this in the same way, whether we re making documentaries or fiction." Collector Project
Collector

Collector During the visual identity course with Adeline Mollard, the students had to develop an identity project promoting a collection chosen by them. Each project includes the design of a catalogue contextualising and presenting the collection, together with the design of a poster. LUEURS "Lueurs" is a collection of jewels, narrated by family photos and texts recalling the history of these jewels. In my family, whether maternal or paternal, there is an overwhelming majority of women. Growing up, I saw them all wearing jewelry to which they seemed attached in a way that could not be attributed to their materiality alone. These jewels, by the way they have been given or handed down, carry stories. The stories they embody, though I find it hard to remember what role each character plays, give me a fragmented image of my family s history. By Simon Cossyalmanacco 2025 This identity seeks to retranscribe ancient, vernacular and ornamental codes through a contemporary approach. In the form of a calendar, this edition uses ascii-art to rediscover almanac aesthetics lost through the ages. By Siméon Dubuisfrom a to b "From a to b" is a visual identity project based on a collection of transport tickets from different countries. It reinterprets their visual codes to recreate atmospheres, a graphic line presented in the form of an edition. TRANSLATION Project
TRANSLATION

TRANSLATION During the visual identity course, the 2nd year Graphic Design bachelors had to produce a communication project based on a translation. They had to define their own translation system and develop a visual language based on these rules. Mires Through my research into test patterns, my aim was to design and use test patterns that were truncated, whether by the printing technique or by their very design. These test patterns are intentionally designed to be altered and used in a way that reverses their original calibration function. By calibrating the camera with these test patterns, the resulting image suffers all the errors and imperfections induced. This research explores how calibration errors affect image quality, by manipulating parameters such as blur, overexposure and optical distortion.etic potential of technical errors in photography. Par BAD NOISE CLUB This project is a visual identity proposal for a fictitious electronic music club, inspired by the world of rave parties, techno clubs and the influence of the Roland TR-303 on this musical genre from the 90s to the present day. The visuals are the result of experimentation and research into the machine s technical characteristics. They translate live the modulation of sound and the way the instrument is used using VJing techniques. Par PIMP MY HOOK Fly fishing is a fishing method that uses lures made to imitate aquatic and terrestrial insects.  Using 3D, "PIMP MY HOOK" reproduces the translation phenomenon between the real insect and its imitation on a hook, just as an artificial fly tyer would do. Par Sounds of Things "Sounds of Things" is a visual identity that translates sound into images. It takes the form of an alphabet book in which the sound of each object creates an infographic form. In this way, a whole visual lexicon is created, moving from one sense (hearing) to another (vision). Par CORPS ET ÂMEA mixture of empirical data and concrete poetry, CORPS ET ÂMES translates my state of mind when I improvise in dance. From an internal point of view, this project illustrates the four criteria I use in my practice: speed, amplitude, height and intensity, as well as the thoughts that go through my head. A video illustrates the creative process, itself condensed into two posters featuring my personal video archives and the more abstract aspect of my movements.  The project is accompanied by a pack of cards for dancers who enjoy improvisation and challenges. Par Vallée du GottéronThis is the story of a river that runs aground at the foot of a town. This wild river has always fascinated the people of Fribourg, but it has also frightened them. Mixing reality and fiction, this project is a work of research into the translation of a place and its legends. Par

So, how can we live better? Project
So, how can we live better?

So, how can we live better? Beyond questions of functionality, comfort and individual or collective well-being, the built environment is capable of responding in a stimulating way to societal, energy and environmental challenges. Workplaces, homes, public spaces, interiors and streets are all driven by real statements of intent that motivate their design. The 2nd year Graphic Design students worked on a communication based on one of these principles (or others) and on the architectural creation that refers to it in order to promote it. Ailleurs Ici Édition Ailleurs Ici is the story of 132 route de la Fruitière. During their retirement, the two former teachers René and Anne-Marie Favre explored the world. Their travels are above all encounters, the interests of enthusiasts. A history book of faraway lands for René, and a fantastic but tangible herbarium for Annie. But when they return from these expeditions, it s their house that changes. As if undergoing a second metamorphosis. The old renovated barn at 132 Route de la Fruitière has been given a final chrysalis. The walls are filled with colourful objects and prints of exotic negatives. The stones here are filled with prints from elsewhere. Without intending to, René and Annie have turned 132 Route la Fruitière into a museum inhabited by its curators. Elsewhere Here is their catalogue, retracing each of René and Annie s journeys through objects as mystical as they are foreign. Par LEs vieux Blocs Édition Les vieux blocs traces the history of a group of buildings in the Marolles district of Brussels. Emblematic of Art Nouveau architecture, it now represents a meeting point between a social building and an architectural one. This project invites us to explore this controversial dynamic by bringing together the tourist side and the social side in the same architecture, with a testimonial from a neighbour and images of tourists strolling through the district. Par Terrain Gurzelen Édition It s important, even temporarily, to create parentheses in society, bubbles of utopia that can burst at any moment. The energy that emanates from these ephemeral moments is unique. Gurz is a sensory stroll that hijacks, appropriates and translates the materiality of the Terrain de la Gurzelen, a football pitch temporarily occupied by the residents of the city of Biel. The aim is to leave a trace of the life of this surreal place, which will soon disappear. Par 14 21 Vidéo This simulation shows the duality between the inflows and the threats posed by the Grande Dixence dam to the population of the valleys below. It traces the hypothetical course of water from the dam to the town of Sierre. Par CITY STADIUM LEAGUE Édition The city stadium is a multi-purpose urban facility designed for sporting activities and an ideal meeting place for local residents, reinforcing social cohesion. CITY STADIUM LEAGUE, halfway between the famous vignette collection albums and reportage, is an immersive object retracing an amateur football tournament held on 7 and 8 May 2024 in Renens. It highlights not only the sporting event itself, but also the social and unifying impact of the event. Par Hotel à gogo Édition The aim was to pay homage to the abandoned Grand Hôtel Chaumont & Golf in Neuchâtel. Having closed, because it was recluse of any civilization, in the heights of Neuchâtel. At the time it was in operation, the hotel used to organise themed activities to attract customers, but these were unsuccessful and the hotel went bankrupt. So I based the concept of my edition on this theme, recreating melancholy costume scenes inside the hotel, as if someone had never stopped carrying out these activities in this place frozen in time. I did all this with the help of official documents I d picked up on the spot, such as activity reports and flyers promoting the evenings, the bands, the fancy dress costumes and the concerts. These are included in the edition to accompany the photographic sequence. Par

Magazine - 23/24 Project
Magazine - 23/24

Magazine - 23/24 As part of the publishing course led by Anouk Schneider and Chi-Long Trieu, 2nd year Visual Communication students had the opportunity to design an artist s book during the first semester. This book project stands out for its contemporary approach aimed at creating an editorial object that harmoniously integrates form and content in the current context of the editorial landscape. Students were encouraged to exploit their artistic freedom at all levels of creation, whether in terms of format, choice of paper, binding, layout, illustrations, text or typography. As part of this course, the artist s book can take shape through various illustration modalities, such as photography, reproduction, contextualization, drawing, 3D, etc. The emphasis is on the author s artistic vision and the means implemented to realize it. Students take on multiple roles as editor, curator and architect, covering the responsibilities of artistic director, designer, photographer, stylist, illustrator, typographer, editor-in-chief, and editorial secretary. This course highlights contemporary editorial design by exploring the narrative potential of a sequence of controlled content. Service Design - 2024 Project
Service Design - 2024

Service Design - 2024 During the Service Design course, the 3rd year of the Graphic Design, Photography and Media & Interaction Design bachelors had to create multi-media projects. A collaboration of the Visual Communication department which had as subject the SDGs (*Sustainable Development Goals). The theme was called "For a good cause, make the SDGs a reality" and its objective was to allow students to develop a cause that is close to their hearts. Each project consists of at least two different media, one primary and one secondary. These projects could take any form that the students deemed relevant, be it a website, editions, posters, a video sequence or virtual reality. The SDGs are meant to be achieved globally by all United Nations member states by 2030. This entails all states equally playing their part in seeking common solutions to the world s urgent challenges. Switzerland is also obligated to implement these goals at the national level. Furthermore, incentives must be created to encourage non-governmental actors to increasingly contribute to sustainable development. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), along with their 169 targets, constitute the core of the Agenda 2030. They integrate the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development and, for the first time, place poverty eradication and sustainable development on the same agenda.Your Email s Carbon Footprint Poster & Website This project comprises a website that explores various aspects of the carbon footprint of emails and the different ways in which they contribute to CO2 emissions. To make this information more accessible, the carbon footprint figures of emails are illustrated using concrete and familiar examples for the general public, such as kilometers driven by cars or the energy consumption of household appliances. In order to raise awareness among a broad audience, we have introduced a mascot named Bob, who serves as a guide through this information. Posters summarize the three main elements of the site: the CO2 emissions from emails, solutions to reduce this footprint, and an introduction to Bob. They encourage the public to visit the website to learn more. By , & SHIEn Website & Moving Poster Our project aims to raise awareness among 18-24 year olds about the social and environmental issues of ultra fast fashion, focusing specifically on the case of the giant SHEIN. The idea is to dissect each step of the ordering process by revealing behind-the-scenes aspects through an interactive experience that incorporates social media codes. By , & back to Newspaper & Video We have created a project aimed at promoting sustainable cosmetics. This project highlights the adoption of solid cosmetics in a zero waste approach. It raises awareness and informs about an effective and simple alternative, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing sustainable solutions that are respectful of both people and the environment. By , & Anthracite Edition & video Our project aims to raise awareness among the public about the dangers of light pollution for the survival of nocturnal insects and its impact on Swiss biodiversity. The edition combines scientific popularization with photographs illustrating the impact of light, blending the poetic with the alarming. The teaser immerses the viewer in a first-person perspective, experiencing life as an insect, to demonstrate the direct effects of this invasive light and to evoke empathy among the audience. Award-winning project at the USM Design Grant competition By , & 2030CHF Magazines & instagram We have launched a magazine called 2030CHF, with an annual publication every year until 2030. This magazine examines Switzerland from a new and impartial perspective, inviting everyone to ask themselves: "Will we achieve our goals by 2030?" By , & Tue la·e consomateur·ice en toi ! Fanzine & Website We have created a fanzine and a website to inform about the capitalist logic of over-responsibilizing individuals. This project aims to provide keys to understanding the consumer condition and to encourage breaking this status by becoming agents of change, disseminating content, and taking action. By , & ECOVILLE Video game & Website The project ECOVILLE takes the form of a downloadable computer video game. Interactive and fun, it is designed to raise awareness among the younger generation about the importance of preserving urban flora and fauna. The main objective is to provide children with simple ecological solutions that they can easily implement. By sharing their newfound knowledge with their parents, children become ambassadors for environmental conservation. The game also helps to develop their autonomy and critical thinking through its various stages and challenges. By , & bits & peels Book & instagram The project consists of an educational edition in the form of a cookbook, inspired by grandmother s recipes, highlighting various foods, their types, and different ways to transform their waste. These transformation methods are categorized into several categories: cosmetics, maintenance, cooking, and gardening. The edition is accompanied by Instagram posts focused on seasonal fruits and vegetables, offering tips for effectively recycling these foods. By , &

REMIND ME I'M ALIVE Project
REMIND ME I'M ALIVE

REMIND ME I M ALIVE REMIND ME I M ALIVE is a companion that combines the functions of a fidget toy with those of a personal reminder. The gadget uses information on Wifi connections in its immediate vicinity to better understand the user s environment. By examining these connections - the only gateway to the outside world - the gadget can tell whether the user is in a busy or quiet environment, and even give indications of possible stressful situations. When the user is not interacting with the device, it constantly monitors his or her status via the surrounding wifi connections. These connections provide implicit information on social conditions, working environments, infrastructures and much more. If the user does not communicate with the companion for more than six hours, it “dies” and must be resuscitated. This feature underlines the need for regular interaction and ensures that the companion is always ready for use.

LET THE DATASET CHANGE YOUR MINDSET Project
LET THE DATASET CHANGE YOUR MINDSET

LET THE DATASET CHANGE YOUR MINDSET This project revolves around a fully functional data visualization experience and graphical interface, designed and programmed by second-year Bachelor students in Media & Interaction Design as part of a course taught by Gaël Hugo. This exercise begins with the following reflection: "Fun" datasets concern topics that are of personal interest, and can be used to answer unexpected questions and explore relationships that aren t immediately intuitive. Perhaps you start with a question or hypothesis, and then find a dataset to prove (or disprove) your theory. Or, you might even generate your own dataset using web scraping techniques or an open API. In fact, creating your own dataset enables you to collect, label, and prepare a clean dataset. - Kindra Coope l évolution des sorcières au cinéma Par Olivia CapolWho bears the responsibility for the future of space? Renens, the capital of the Ouest Lausannois region, is characterized by its diverse cultural mix and influences, welcoming some 121 nationalities. A city of passers-by, a creative city, an entertaining city, an endearing city, you ll stroll through and discover welcoming cafés, picturesque boutiques with windows adorned with curious curios and treasures, restaurants with specialties from elsewhere, and much more. Within a well-defined perimeter, between the train station and the ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, the 19 1st-year Bachelor of Photography students went out to meet the small shops that make up Renens. Beyond their shop windows, these local heroes are the town s key players. Baklava with glistening honey, preparing food in the back kitchen, a wry smile - in a documentary or sometimes staged approach, the students captured the authenticity, commitment and everyday reality of these shopkeepers. Through portraits, still lifes and architectural images, the Bride and Ketchup project takes us on an eclectic visual journey, with its varied flavors and multiple cultural landscapes.DATES & SCHEDULE12.04–05.05.2024OPENINGApril 11 2024, 6PMVENUESquare du 14-juin 1020 RenensMAPSTUDENTS, , , , , , , , , ,  , , , , , , , , UNDER THE DIRECTION OF HEAD OF PROGRAMME ASSISTANTS,

L'ECAL AT VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS Event
L'ECAL AT VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS

L ECAL AT VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS,12–21.04.2024,Nyon As guest of honour at the 55th edition of the Visions du Réel festival in Nyon, filmmaker Jia Zhang-Ke will be giving a masterclass on Tuesday 16 April, organised in partnership with the Cinémathèque suisse. The programme also includes six films by the ECAL s Cinema Department and alumni. MASTERCLASS: JIA ZHANG-KE Cinéaste, Chine Moderated by Jean-Michel Frodon, film critic and journalist A leading figure in independent Chinese cinema, and contemporary cinema more broadly, Jia Zhang-Ke will be presenting a masterclass exploring his captivating and multifaceted oeuvre which examines the history of his country and the characters who inhabit it. A retrospective of his films will run throughout the festival edition. Born in 1970 in the mining region of Shanxi, bordered by the Great Wall of China, Jia Zhang-Ke is a leading light in contemporary cinema. He belongs to a generation of Chinese filmmakers who were profoundly affected by the Tiananmen Square protests. His diverse filmography, which comprises more than 20 short and feature works, borrows elements from both genre and non-fiction cinema. Switching from taught thrillers to documentaries and encompassing a myriad hybrid formats woven together by non-professional actors, fictional works on a canvas of reality, and fantasies bypassing otherwise restrained stories, Jia Zhang-Ke has spent two decades creating a filmography as coherent as it is shifting. His stylistically diverse oeuvre deploys the full range of cinematographic techniques (16 and 35mm, DV, HD, etc.). Approaching his subject as a visual artist, Jia Zhang-Ke offers a subtle and subversive immersion in Chinese society, imbued with a sublimated realism. Resisting censorship and tirelessly defending the cultural significance of his country s cinematic output, Jia Zhang-Ke weaves long-form, epic-style stories to explore personal and multifaceted journeys that challenge the notion of dissolution of the individual within the national narrative. Ever willing to wrestle with the realities of China s recent history, the filmmaker offers a profoundly humanist representation that draws on memories and recollections. To achieve this, Jia Zhang-Ke creates a narrative polysemy that focuses its gaze on the everyday lives of ordinary people living in “intermediate towns” scattered between the rural life and that of the country s burgeoning megacities. By doing so, Jia Zhang-Ke s films dissect the promises and mirages offered under the forced march of modernisation in effect since the 1960s. They examine the effects of this collective story, specifically the imposition of state capitalism on human beings, by providing a romantic and sensitive counter-narrative. An essential and uncompromising filmography that has often fallen foul of the government s strict censorship regime. An event in collaboration with the Cinémathèque suisse.
