ECAL x AREA OF WORK - CO-EXISTENCE Project
ECAL x AREA OF WORK - CO-EXISTENCE

ECAL x AREA OF WORK - CO-EXISTENCE ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne has teamed up with Paris-based studio Area of Work at Paris Photo to present CO-EXISTENCE, a monumental immersive installation in the heart of Paris s 11th arrondissement, from 7 to 9 November 2024. In a large metropolis, a small, seemingly empty apartment reveals discreet traces of human presence. On another scale, a conquering population manifests itself. Wings flap, slime trails, antennae shivers... In the industrial setting of the former Garage République in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, CO-EXISTENCE showcases a living cohabitation through a sequence of artificial images created using Computer Generated Imagery (CGI). These spectacular yet intimate photo-realistic projections highlight the imperceptible, the infra- thin, and the invisible, blurring the scales between micro and macro. Developed during three series of workshops conducted from 2023 to autumn 2024 by Area of Work, CO- EXISTENCE bears witness to the technical and artistic skills that are honed within the ECAL MA Photography. These workshops enabled students to transpose their photographic skills into the virtual space of 3D graphics to understand the temporal, artistic, and commercial issues involved in creating CGI. ‘This collaboration offered ECAL students an introduction to the tools and possibilities of 3D graphics, exploring their integration into the processes of creating photorealistic and hyper-realistic images, while highlighting the importance of the artistic and cinematographic dimensions that are at the heart of our identity. – Amine Ghorab & Scott Renau, Area of Work, Paris. Founded in Paris in 2018 by artists and directors Amine Ghorab and Scott Renau, Area of Work is known for its distinctive contemporary visual narratives, blending graphic framing and rigorous photographic direction. Specialising in fashion, luxury, and technology, the creative studio has become a major player in contemporary visual storytelling..

ECAL at Festival Images Vevey Event
ECAL at Festival Images Vevey

ECAL at Festival Images Vevey,07–29.09.2024,Vevey From September 7 to 29, graduates of ECAL s Bachelor and Master of Photography programs present their work at the Festival Images Vevey. VENUEVeveyDATES & SCHEDULEFrom September 7 to 29, 2024WEBSITEimages.chFrom September 7 to 29, 2024, photography in all its forms takes over the streets of Vevey, invades the parks and strolls along the shores of the lake. For three weeks, the Festival Images Vevey transforms the small town on the Riviera and welcomes a wide audience. This year, four ECAL graduates are part of the program. Positive Illusions Diploma project by , Master Photography graduate With this project , Benjamin Freedman is reconstructing his childhood memories using CGI (Computer Generated Imagery). The artist diverts this technology, mostly used in films and video games, which requires close involvement in the creation of every object, detail and lighting. Freedman meticulously reconstructs a family roadtrip between Montreal and Maine in the United States in 1999, reproducing his point of view at the age of nine. Created for the Boéland site near the Swiss Museum of Games, the installation explores how memory shapes, transforms and simulates reality. Positive Illusions plunges nostalgically into the joyous world of childhood, fragmented by memory and reassembled by technology. Cash Me Online Diploma project by , Master Photography graduate Cash Me Online is a satirical project combining photography, performance and social media footage. Amandine Kuhlmann creates a hyper-feminine alter ego that she embodies online and during performances to achieve viral fame. She exaggerates her poses, imitates TikTok and Instagram trends and dramatizes her everyday life to make herself noticed. The artist reappropriates videos, drawing on the suggestions of her algorithm and the female stereotypes portrayed by social networks. These caricatured images reveal the ambiguities of virtual profiles, between the objectification of the body and the desire for individuality. Questioning the impact of social media and the monetisation of the self, the installation presents a reflection to a generation obsessed with their physical and digital appearance. One Last Journey , Master Photography graduate One Last Journey addresses artificial intelligence and the instant photographic process through the telling of a fictional love story. Attempting to imitate the aesthetics of the Polaroid camera, Alexey Chernikov writes short descriptions of a couple s last journey before separation on the Midjourney image-generating software. These images are then reproduced on a traditional Polaroid camera using a new printing device developed by the same company. Interested in the emotional potential of AI, the artist questions the reliability of the photographic medium. From one image to the next, the pair appears different each time, confusing the sense of reality. Using the Polaroid as definitive proof of authenticity, the project invites us to reconsider the photographic snapshot in light of AI. Get the Look! , Bachelor Photography graduate What would happen if we let algorithms dress us? This is the question Romain Mader asked himself when he founded Get the Look! He set himself a challenge: to follow the recommendations of his smartphone s algorithm and order clothes from online stores as suggested, without making any personal choices. Since the algorithm is influenced by his and his partner s browsing activity, the result would be expected to match their style and personality. In his studio, the artist adopts a number of incongruous postures. By examining the sales techniques and marketing tools used by fast-fashion websites to encourage consumption, the series ironically denounces industryinduced addiction. Through the example of fashion, Mader universally reveals the influence of algorithms on our lives.

Francis Baudevin receives the Leenaards Foundation Cultural Prize 2024 Article
Francis Baudevin receives the Leenaards Foundation Cultural Prize 2024

Francis Baudevin receives the Leenaards Foundation Cultural Prize 2024 Congratulations to Francis Baudevin, professor at ECAL, who has been awarded the Prix Leenaards 2024, and to Anna-Marija Adomaitytė and Anjesa Dellova, graduates of the ECAL s Bachelor and Master Fine Arts respectively, who have won one of the Cultural Grants. ECAL is proud to announce that Francis Baudevin, professor in the ECAL Bachelor Fine Arts program since 1996, has been awarded the prestigious Leenaards Cultural Prize 2024. The prize, endowed with 30,000 francs, recognizes his entire artistic career, marked by a constant reinvention of geometric abstraction and his commitment to passing on his knowledge to younger generations of artists. Francis Baudevin is an emblematic figure of the neo-geo artistic movement, a postmodern current that revisits geometric abstraction with a contemporary twist. His work is characterized by a subtle, thoughtful use of motifs from advertising packaging and symbols of consumer society. Francis Baudevin, who is also passionate about music, does not hesitate to play with the boundaries between artistic disciplines, an approach that has earned him international recognition. The Leenaards Cultural Prize 2024 will be awarded on September 8 at the Comédie de Genève. At this ceremony, the ECAL will also be honoured by the distinction awarded to Anna-Marija Adomaitytė, who will graduate from the Master Fine Arts in 2021, and Anjesa Dellova , who will graduate from the Bachelor Fine Arts in 2017, and who will receive one of eight cultural grants from the Leenaards Foundation. This grant of 50,000 francs will support the development of their artistic career. ECAL warmly congratulates Francis Baudevin, Anna-Marija Adomaitytė, and Anjesa Dellova on these distinctions. These awards not only recognize outstanding individual achievements, but also reinforce ECAL s reputation as a benchmark institution in the fine arts. @annamarijaadomaityte anjesadellova.com @anjesadellova leenaards.ch

SORTIR DU CADRE – ECAL + DECATHLON Project
SORTIR DU CADRE – ECAL + DECATHLON

SORTIR DU CADRE – ECAL + DECATHLON On the occasion of Paris Design Week 2024, DECATHLON is partnering with ECAL s Product Design Master s programme to unveil "Sortir du Cadre", an installation showcasing two prototypes of electric-assisted trekking bikes based on research into eco-design. Through this collaboration, DECATHLON engages the younger generation of designers around eco-design themes. These concept bikes, envisioned by students from Product Design Master s  programme, express a vision of the future in which sustainable development and the pleasure of outdoor activities go hand in hand. Galva by Justus Hilfenhaus & Jiahao Huang Data collected* by DECATHLON show that steel is far less polluting than aluminum in almost every aspect of bicycle production. Yet most e-bike frames today are made from aluminum. Based on this observation, Galva offers a galvanized steel frame in which the battery is integrated and protected. To limit excess weight, the frame uses a minimum of materials while retaining its strength. Production is based mainly on tube stamping and bending, cold processes that consume less energy. Galvanizing the steel also provides a durable coating, guaranteeing the frame s longevity. *Based on the LCDN 3.1 database provided by the European Commission. E-Venture by Gabriella Duck Garnham, Aurelia Pleyer & Yichen Wu Inspired by the structure of the human body, E-venture revisits the anatomy of the bicycle by offering a more frugal alternative. A sleek, skeletal steel frame integrates electrical components, creating space inside the bike s “skin” to store the elements needed for touring. The E-venture s skin is made from unused textiles from DECATHLON s camping range and adopts the layering principle used for outdoor clothing. This design aims to offer flexible, lightweight storage, ideal for long trips, yet still suitable for everyday commuting.

ESC Project
ESC

Emma Grosu – ESC Video games allow players to escape into narrative worlds where they hold ‘all the power. In ESC, the game s character seeks to escape his own reality. This reversal examines the notions of freedom and constraint in video games, ironically highlighting the limits of our existence. What would happen if a character became aware of their situation, realizing that they are not in control of their movements but are, instead, imprisoned by them? ESC allowed me to explore concepts of immersion such as breaking the fourth wall and mise en abyme. Inspired by works like ‘The Truman Show and ‘Sword Art Online, I illustrated how the perception of freedom can be an illusion, both in video games and in the physical world.

Ma'as Typeface Project
Ma'as Typeface

Karim Akel – Ma as Typeface Ma as Typeface is a family of variable, experimental, Arabic and Latin fonts inspired by Al-Kufi Al-Handassi calligraphy, found mainly in Oriental architecture, and by early XXth century dutch geometric fonts. Through this work, I question the balance of power between Latin and Arabic script as well as the technological tools efficiency that made for drawing Arabic characters. The theme of multi-script is currently revealing a plethora of issues linked to the balance of power between two distinct writing systems. Ma as Typeface metabolizes my dissertation research, which explores questions of identity and power between Latin and Arabic scripts through their formal characteristics, evolution and historical context.

Formant Project
Formant

Yohann Kampmann – Formant Formant Festival is an audio-visual event featuring music and digital art installations in abandoned industrial sites in Valais in Switzerland. Valais s old industrial sites, once vital, are now neglected or demolished for unnecessary residential buildings. Formant repurposes these spaces for cultural events, preserving heritage and fulfilling community needs. The festival s visual identity uses these architectural spaces in an interactive 3D website, blending sound and visuals to immerse users. This approach encourages public curiosity and exploration, enhancing their understanding and enjoyment of new artistic forms. Formant means each of several prominent bands of frequency that determine the harmonic quality of a sound.

Substance Project
Substance

Luca Reichenbach – Substance In the early 20th century, typography involved manual engraving of characters on lead or wood to suit the printing methods of that era. Nowadays, typography is largely digitized during the design phase and applied across both print and digital mediums. This project investigates the shift from physical to digital typography, analyzing its material and immaterial aspects, including its shapes, design and applications.

iLand Universe Project
iLand Universe

Jérémie Kursner – iLand Universe iLand Universe is a project focused on the world of amusement parks where every activity is an allusion to the digital world, whether through its architecture, its scenography, or its references to the overuse of smartphones. Through an "epic" teaser, this project adopts the promotional codes of a traditional amusement park, using video as the main communication tool while playing with the "inspiring" codes of this industry from the United States. The desire to create this fantastic world stems from my passion for this universe, as well as my interest in metaphorizing digital visions into tangible concepts, thus creating mind games that continuously question the digital society in which we live.

Take Part Project
Take Part

Charlotte Pralong – Take Part Have you ever wanted to be part of the show at the concert you are attending? This is where the Take Part project comes in, an interactive scenography for a song specially composed by my musical duo with my sister. The phone, often seen as a disturbing intermediary between artists and the audience, is here used as a tool for connection that strengthens bonds and amplifies collective energy. Indeed, each spectator participates in the projection behind the musicians using their phone. The audience follows a character with a naïve style, animated in 2D, who travels through various worlds to recharge before finally sharing this energy, symbolizing the sharing and multiplication of collective joy.

Buena, Bonita, y Barata Project
Buena, Bonita, y Barata

Isabella Madrid – Buena, Bonita, y Barata As a Latin American woman, I have grown up with very specific expectations of the kind of woman I should be. In my project, I am reversing the codes that have been forced onto me and immersing myself in the different symbols of how Colombian women exist and have been represented through photographic self portraits. I am taking these symbols and subverting them, enacting them, letting them hold a weight on me, holding my own weight on them, playing with them, letting them define me and simultaneously redefining their power and meaning. I am showcasing not only the everlasting colonial violence Colombian female bodies have always been subjected to but simultaneously reappropriating the narrative around them, playing the muse, model, photographer, stylist, makeup artist, and art director.

Firelight Project
Firelight

Theofanis Papadopoulos – Firelight Firelight explores my fear of non-existence after death and that of imagining to no longer interact with an environment. It confronts the characters with the lies they tell themselves, in order to be able to survive in this absurd situation. It is about an awareness and the point of no return, where, confronted with reality, we also become aware of the fact to vainly create meaning in our lives, to make them livable. Thus, we hide from the mortal misery that awaits us every day, as in every room of the mansion. We create meanings and explanations to comfort ourselves, except that being aware of it and accepting this absurdity is equivalent to no longer being afraid of it.

Hypersex Project
Hypersex

Antoine Scalese – Hypersex My diploma project is a screenplay for a feature film titled Hypersex, exploring the fantasy romance genre. It tells the story of Alfa, a young man who lends his appearance to a model of a sex android and manages to divert one sample in hopes of restoring lost intimacy with his elusive partner. Quickly, by substituting it for himself, he loses control of the situation and finds himself confronted with intense affects. This screenplay uses sexuality as a fully-fledged dramatic force within the overall narrative dynamic. Intertwined with this, the narrative rhetoric of love s return offers a queer perspective to the film, portraying the complex relationship between two male characters who, despite their selfish behaviors, choose not to give up on each other.

Flaneri Project
Flaneri

Thorgeir Kristinn Blöndal – Flaneri Flaneri is a cursive script-like typeface that invites references born after industrialization to find its place. Torn between the human stroke and its translation into the machine, it steps into a world where authenticity is becoming harder to detect, and a longing for “human made” becomes greater. While wandering around many places, Flaneri finds inspiration in everything from Jan van de Velde s art of writing to my grandmother s and my own handwriting, the digital translation carries questions on what is to be left out, polished or even highlighted. Resulting in a cursive font with a physical texture and broken connections, leaving the observer with a feeling of what has been or what is to come.

Fabrikaat Project
Fabrikaat

Gabriela Jaime – Fabrikaat Fabrikaat is a sans-serif typeface that breaks from the traditional Swiss neo-grotesk genre. Its curves, translated from steel to vector, vary in width from Condensed [0] to Regular [4] to Wide [8]. A monospace cut, incorporating features from its proportional siblings, serves as a text style for small sizes. Fabrikaat is inspired by manipulating rigid materials and analyzing the resulting curves, focusing on deformation and tension. Like the exploration of shaping stiff materials, Fabrikaat s curves have a mechanical feel. Smooth transitions between flat and curved forms are achieved through a stylistic set designed to facilitate movement along the design space. This adds character and rhythm to a sturdy, mechanical typeface, allowing versatile application across media and font sizes.

Itinérant Project
Itinérant

Simon Memel – Itinérant Itinérant takes Robert Granjon s work as its starting point, producing a type family of four cuts: a text and display roman, each with a corresponding italic. The text cuts pare back some of the extravagance that Granjon was famous for, and lower the contrast in order to create type suitable for continuous setting, especially in smaller sizes. In part they draw on historical typefaces which themselves were influenced by Granjon- namely Plantin and Times New Roman. The display cuts reference the writing masters that preceded Granjon, and influenced the masters work. They restore the details that were removed in the rendering of the text cuts, and go further still, creating characters more calligraphic than Granjon, but rendered with a contemporary cleanness.

Plaxid Project
Plaxid

Lucrezia Noro – Plaxid Plaxid is a uniwidth typeface developed to enhance the typesetting of complex hierarchies and text-heavy layouts. Inspired by the mechanical structure of the Ionic genre, Plaxid is a practical font family with a solid feel and modest character. The specificity of duplex matrices used by Linotype during the hot metal typesetting era are improved with the contemporary design possibilities of negative spacing and applied kerning. This complementary duality makes it possible to achieve a uniwidth design without compromising letterforms. Plaxid maintains consistent width measurements across its eight cuts, making it easy to change styles without affecting quality, copyfit and layout.

Quasi Project
Quasi

Antoine Pasi – Quasi The Quasi family started with the idea of “Mécalde”, a french typographic term employed by Maximilien Vox to describe José Mendoza y Almeida s way of mixing Mechanistic and Garalde genres. Like a soft sculpture molded by hand, Quasi offers a contemporary dive into an empiric and hybrid process by joining traces from the craft and the industrial, gathering fragments from different periods. The brush, the chisel and the broad nib pen are joining on a rigid and boxy construction, without rejecting the digital tool. Quasi embraces the beauty of imperfections and finds its interest in inconsistent and grotesque details, mediating antagonistic ideas. Like a Janus-faced performer, Quasi is confident yet clumsy – rough yet elegant, inhabiting polarizing personalities within a character set.

VAUD-O-RAMA – JEUX OLYMPIQUES PARIS 2024 As part of the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the canton of Vaud has commissioned ECAL to create an original work of art, on view from July 24 to September 8 in the Maison suisse set up for the occasion in the courtyard of the Swiss Embassy in Paris. GRAPHIC ANIMATION  & COORDINATIONSCENOGRAPHYTECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTHEAD OF PROJECTVISUAL RESEARCH, , , , & Comprising some twenty synchronized screens offering a panoramic view of the canton and its major assets, Vaud-o-rama aims to promote the region and forge links with the public, helping them to discover its richness and diversity. Inspired by the diorama museal device, this installation offers a dynamic and immersive showcase for the canton of Vaud, highlighting four key areas: Innovation, Education, Culture and Sport. It presents a varied portrait of the canton and offers a current view of its activities. In this way, the canton of Vaud reveals itself as a center of excellence for research and innovation, a cutting-edge learning ground, a mecca for cultural creation and a sports ecosystem that is unique in the world. Images and text come alive and intermingle in a meticulously orchestrated choreography. International sporting events, the headquarters of major federations, prestigious cultural institutions, renowned universities and colleges, top-level scientific and technical research centers - these are the strengths that the canton brings to the stage and into the spotlight in this creation. Initiated during an experimental workshop with students to generate initial graphic intentions, the project was then developed within ECAL s Visual Communication department in collaboration with ECAL s Technology Center.

Collector Project
Collector

Collector During the visual identity course with Adeline Mollard, the students had to develop an identity project promoting a collection chosen by them. Each project includes the design of a catalogue contextualising and presenting the collection, together with the design of a poster. LUEURS "Lueurs" is a collection of jewels, narrated by family photos and texts recalling the history of these jewels. In my family, whether maternal or paternal, there is an overwhelming majority of women. Growing up, I saw them all wearing jewelry to which they seemed attached in a way that could not be attributed to their materiality alone. These jewels, by the way they have been given or handed down, carry stories. The stories they embody, though I find it hard to remember what role each character plays, give me a fragmented image of my family s history. By Simon Cossyalmanacco 2025 This identity seeks to retranscribe ancient, vernacular and ornamental codes through a contemporary approach. In the form of a calendar, this edition uses ascii-art to rediscover almanac aesthetics lost through the ages. By Alice Gilliozgaz(e) This project brings together a collection of perfume bottles, presented through an identity that questions fashion codes through censorship and various visual creation techniques. By Siméon Dubuisfrom a to b "From a to b" is a visual identity project based on a collection of transport tickets from different countries. It reinterprets their visual codes to recreate atmospheres, a graphic line presented in the form of an edition. By Léa Verboux72 flyers "72 Flyers" is a collection of leaflets assembled over several years. The project seeks to deconstruct these printed materials through their format, colors, composition and texts. All have been analyzed and classified in the form of an edition. By 6962 viganello This family heritage of postcards with Ticino as its departure and destination comes together through this visual identity. In book form, this collection immerses readers in a visual and textual archive, testimony to short-distance exchanges. By Carolina Crivelli

So, how can we live better? Project
So, how can we live better?

So, how can we live better? Beyond questions of functionality, comfort and individual or collective well-being, the built environment is capable of responding in a stimulating way to societal, energy and environmental challenges. Workplaces, homes, public spaces, interiors and streets are all driven by real statements of intent that motivate their design. The 2nd year Graphic Design students worked on a communication based on one of these principles (or others) and on the architectural creation that refers to it in order to promote it. Ailleurs Ici Édition Ailleurs Ici is the story of 132 route de la Fruitière. During their retirement, the two former teachers René and Anne-Marie Favre explored the world. Their travels are above all encounters, the interests of enthusiasts. A history book of faraway lands for René, and a fantastic but tangible herbarium for Annie. But when they return from these expeditions, it s their house that changes. As if undergoing a second metamorphosis. The old renovated barn at 132 Route de la Fruitière has been given a final chrysalis. The walls are filled with colourful objects and prints of exotic negatives. The stones here are filled with prints from elsewhere. Without intending to, René and Annie have turned 132 Route la Fruitière into a museum inhabited by its curators. Elsewhere Here is their catalogue, retracing each of René and Annie s journeys through objects as mystical as they are foreign. Par LEs vieux Blocs Édition Les vieux blocs traces the history of a group of buildings in the Marolles district of Brussels. Emblematic of Art Nouveau architecture, it now represents a meeting point between a social building and an architectural one. This project invites us to explore this controversial dynamic by bringing together the tourist side and the social side in the same architecture, with a testimonial from a neighbour and images of tourists strolling through the district. Par Terrain Gurzelen Édition It s important, even temporarily, to create parentheses in society, bubbles of utopia that can burst at any moment. The energy that emanates from these ephemeral moments is unique. Gurz is a sensory stroll that hijacks, appropriates and translates the materiality of the Terrain de la Gurzelen, a football pitch temporarily occupied by the residents of the city of Biel. The aim is to leave a trace of the life of this surreal place, which will soon disappear. Par 14 21 Vidéo This simulation shows the duality between the inflows and the threats posed by the Grande Dixence dam to the population of the valleys below. It traces the hypothetical course of water from the dam to the town of Sierre. Par CITY STADIUM LEAGUE Édition The city stadium is a multi-purpose urban facility designed for sporting activities and an ideal meeting place for local residents, reinforcing social cohesion. CITY STADIUM LEAGUE, halfway between the famous vignette collection albums and reportage, is an immersive object retracing an amateur football tournament held on 7 and 8 May 2024 in Renens. It highlights not only the sporting event itself, but also the social and unifying impact of the event. Par Hotel à gogo Édition The aim was to pay homage to the abandoned Grand Hôtel Chaumont & Golf in Neuchâtel. Having closed, because it was recluse of any civilization, in the heights of Neuchâtel. At the time it was in operation, the hotel used to organise themed activities to attract customers, but these were unsuccessful and the hotel went bankrupt. So I based the concept of my edition on this theme, recreating melancholy costume scenes inside the hotel, as if someone had never stopped carrying out these activities in this place frozen in time. I did all this with the help of official documents I d picked up on the spot, such as activity reports and flyers promoting the evenings, the bands, the fancy dress costumes and the concerts. These are included in the edition to accompany the photographic sequence. Par

Service Design - 2024 Project
Service Design - 2024

Service Design - 2024 During the Service Design course, the 3rd year of the Graphic Design, Photography and Media & Interaction Design bachelors had to create multi-media projects. A collaboration of the Visual Communication department which had as subject the SDGs (*Sustainable Development Goals). The theme was called "For a good cause, make the SDGs a reality" and its objective was to allow students to develop a cause that is close to their hearts. Each project consists of at least two different media, one primary and one secondary. These projects could take any form that the students deemed relevant, be it a website, editions, posters, a video sequence or virtual reality. The SDGs are meant to be achieved globally by all United Nations member states by 2030. This entails all states equally playing their part in seeking common solutions to the world s urgent challenges. Switzerland is also obligated to implement these goals at the national level. Furthermore, incentives must be created to encourage non-governmental actors to increasingly contribute to sustainable development. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), along with their 169 targets, constitute the core of the Agenda 2030. They integrate the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development and, for the first time, place poverty eradication and sustainable development on the same agenda.Your Email s Carbon Footprint Poster & Website This project comprises a website that explores various aspects of the carbon footprint of emails and the different ways in which they contribute to CO2 emissions. To make this information more accessible, the carbon footprint figures of emails are illustrated using concrete and familiar examples for the general public, such as kilometers driven by cars or the energy consumption of household appliances. In order to raise awareness among a broad audience, we have introduced a mascot named Bob, who serves as a guide through this information. Posters summarize the three main elements of the site: the CO2 emissions from emails, solutions to reduce this footprint, and an introduction to Bob. They encourage the public to visit the website to learn more. By , & SHIEn Website & Moving Poster Our project aims to raise awareness among 18-24 year olds about the social and environmental issues of ultra fast fashion, focusing specifically on the case of the giant SHEIN. The idea is to dissect each step of the ordering process by revealing behind-the-scenes aspects through an interactive experience that incorporates social media codes. By , & back to Newspaper & Video We have created a project aimed at promoting sustainable cosmetics. This project highlights the adoption of solid cosmetics in a zero waste approach. It raises awareness and informs about an effective and simple alternative, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing sustainable solutions that are respectful of both people and the environment. By , & Anthracite Edition & video Our project aims to raise awareness among the public about the dangers of light pollution for the survival of nocturnal insects and its impact on Swiss biodiversity. The edition combines scientific popularization with photographs illustrating the impact of light, blending the poetic with the alarming. The teaser immerses the viewer in a first-person perspective, experiencing life as an insect, to demonstrate the direct effects of this invasive light and to evoke empathy among the audience. Award-winning project at the USM Design Grant competition By , & 2030CHF Magazines & instagram We have launched a magazine called 2030CHF, with an annual publication every year until 2030. This magazine examines Switzerland from a new and impartial perspective, inviting everyone to ask themselves: "Will we achieve our goals by 2030?" By , & Tue la·e consomateur·ice en toi ! Fanzine & Website We have created a fanzine and a website to inform about the capitalist logic of over-responsibilizing individuals. This project aims to provide keys to understanding the consumer condition and to encourage breaking this status by becoming agents of change, disseminating content, and taking action. By , & ECOVILLE Video game & Website The project ECOVILLE takes the form of a downloadable computer video game. Interactive and fun, it is designed to raise awareness among the younger generation about the importance of preserving urban flora and fauna. The main objective is to provide children with simple ecological solutions that they can easily implement. By sharing their newfound knowledge with their parents, children become ambassadors for environmental conservation. The game also helps to develop their autonomy and critical thinking through its various stages and challenges. By , & bits & peels Book & instagram The project consists of an educational edition in the form of a cookbook, inspired by grandmother s recipes, highlighting various foods, their types, and different ways to transform their waste. These transformation methods are categorized into several categories: cosmetics, maintenance, cooking, and gardening. The edition is accompanied by Instagram posts focused on seasonal fruits and vegetables, offering tips for effectively recycling these foods. By , &

CORSO – ECAL x Thomas Mailaender,23–24.05.2024,Ancienne Discothèque Corso Artist Thomas Mailaender and students from ECAL s Bachelor Photography program explore the ruins of Corso, a disused nightclub in downtown Renens, with the intention of reviving it. In 1992, an explosion put an abrupt end to Le Corso s activities. The building was demolished, and the remains of the nightclub have since slumbered in silence, darkness and humidity beneath the square laid out on its site. Between archaeology, documentary research and creative speculation, the group of adventurers offers an exhibition journey between mold and glitter, ashes and glamour. ECAL x FREITAG - Access over ownership Project
ECAL x FREITAG - Access over ownership

ECAL x FREITAG - Access over ownership Second-year industrial design students collaborated with Zurich-based brand FREITAG Lab, leveraging their expertise in environmental awareness, material upcycling, and the circular economy. Using the FREITAG manifesto as a foundation, they developed new shared products centered on the principle of "access over ownership." Under the direction of designer Christophe Guberan, students have explored various options for borrowable items. Particularly relevant for temporary-use clothing, accessories, and furniture, this approach enabled the young designers to benefit from FREITAG s expertise in circular economy, material upcycling, services, product development and disruptive innovation. “Design has the responsibility and power to make positive changes towards a circular future. We shared our know-how with the students to raise their awareness of this vision”, says FREITAG Circle Lead Product Design and Development Tu Van Giang. Seeking to fundamentally alter the consumer experience through product design itself, ECAL and FREITAG invite consumers to rethink their relationship with goods while adopting a more sustainable and conscious lifestyle.NEBULA by Disposable plastic ponchos are often used by tourists as a quick fix to stay warm and dry while travelling, but they are as quickly worn out as they are quickly discarded. Made from reclaimed B-grade car airbag textile, NEBULA is designed to replace single-use plastic ponchos. Designed to be as simple as possible to produce, one size fits all and easy to clean and maintain, without compromising on quality and comfort. The ponchos would be borrowed and returned to FREITAG stores, but could also be returned to hotels or mailboxes for convenient retrieval while travelling. Pairs stylishly with the FLAT BOOTS overshoes. FLAT BOOTS by , Most of us own rain boots that we only use a few days a year, according to the weather. FLAT BOOTS are waterproof overshoes that you can borrow for as long as you need them for those rainy days, outdoor activities, or if you ve forgotten your boots when you re on the road. The overshoe features a thermo-welded heavy-duty tarp upper and a rubber sole. Its unique split sole design allows the boots to be rolled up for easy storage and optimised production. Combined with the NEBULA poncho, they would keep you dry while you re out and about. PACK-A-ROOM by , & Thought for students who are most likely to move from one flat to another, study abroad for a semester or have an extra flatmate for a few months, PACK-A-ROOM is a collection of flatpack furniture that is easy to transport and assemble. Made from B-grade airbag and tarp, fitted on a frame made of standard pipes and robust Maker Pipe connectors; the use of modular and detachable connecting parts allows for durable, expandable systems and extends the life cycle of the furniture. Comprising a bed, wardrobe and chair, you would have everything you need to feel at home in just a few turns of hex key. FIESTA KIT by It s party time! You go to the corner shop to buy everything you need: disposable plates, disposable glasses, disposable napkins and, of course, decorations, garlands and disposable balloons, all of which will be thrown away at the end of the day. The FIESTA KIT offers an alternative to disposable garlands and balloons. Made from truck tarp off-cuts from FREITAG bag production, rolled up in a handy pouch, it is a unique and colourful decoration option for celebrating more consciously. F-BÖÖTLE by In Switzerland, river drifting is a popular activity for groups of friends and families. As soon as the temperatures rise, everyone grabs their paddles and pumps and drifts down the river in brightly-coloured rubber boats. Unfortunately, many of these inflatable boats are abandoned on the banks, sometimes after just one use. The problem has become so serious that some towns, like Bern, have taken action by installing massive permanent containers to help maintain the shores of the Aare river. The inflatable F-BÖÖTLE, made from a tractor inner tube combined with truck tarp and safety belts, offers a sustainable alternative for this summertime water adventure. Designed to be easily inflated and deflated, it can be effortlessly rolled up into a backpack for convenient carrying. AIRtube by Translating FREITAG s bag-making expertise to the furniture industry is perhaps a bit of a stretch. Applying its radical principles to furniture rental, however, makes perfect sense. AIRTUBE is an inflatable sofa system made from dead-stock tractor inner tubes and seatbelt webbing. One section of the sofa is made up of four inner tubes constrained and shaped by straps. Each element can accommodate two people and could be easily transported from a FREITAG store to wherever you need it. AIRTUBE is a sturdy, playful and comfy option for events, parties, indoors or out on a sunny day relaxing in a park. shift by When we move from one home to another, we consume a lot of items in a short space of time — cardboard boxes, bags, all sorts of tapes, bubble wrap, etc. — most of which end up in the rubbish or, at best, in a recycling bin. SHIFT is a reusable moving kit made up of a series of sturdy, box-shaped tarp bags ranging in size from 43L, 62L and 82L, plus a long, thin bag for all bulky items. You could borrow as many bags as you need from your local FREITAG store, for a carefree move.

Bachelor Media & Interaction Design students present a series of immersive creations questioning representation and the place of the audience at the heart of a 360° sequence. Creations Captivus by Marine Dang and Jamy Herrmann Dive Inside by Julien Caulet and Paul Dorsaz Empty Room by Marius Parisod and Pierre Teissier Liminial Space by Emilie Maier and Aryana Noorani Ocytocine by Nora Fatehi and Michael Pica These projects explore new territories in digital art. Among them, “Sazen City” stands out for its unique immersive experience, combining machine learning and collective exploration of our memories. The ECAL, through its participation in the Mapping Festival, offers an avant-garde vision of artistic creation, where the spectator becomes the actor of a universe in perpetual redefinition. Sazen City by Tickie Bindner Tickie Bindner s installation plunges us into the heart of our collective memory landscape. Each participant is invited to explore a territory, then send postcards that generate an imaginary, dynamic cartography. Unlike panoramas or urban views, these digital maps illustrate memories with universal emotions, introducing a new form of epistolary exchange. Inspired by Italo Calvino s “Invisible Cities”, Sazen City uses machine learning to co-create a collective territory. As it is built, this shared landscape questions the singularity of our memories and the role of artificial imagination in our digital environments.

Renens, the capital of the Ouest Lausannois region, is characterized by its diverse cultural mix and influences, welcoming some 121 nationalities. A city of passers-by, a creative city, an entertaining city, an endearing city, you ll stroll through and discover welcoming cafés, picturesque boutiques with windows adorned with curious curios and treasures, restaurants with specialties from elsewhere, and much more. Within a well-defined perimeter, between the train station and the ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne, the 19 1st-year Bachelor of Photography students went out to meet the small shops that make up Renens. Beyond their shop windows, these local heroes are the town s key players. Baklava with glistening honey, preparing food in the back kitchen, a wry smile - in a documentary or sometimes staged approach, the students captured the authenticity, commitment and everyday reality of these shopkeepers. Through portraits, still lifes and architectural images, the Bride and Ketchup project takes us on an eclectic visual journey, with its varied flavors and multiple cultural landscapes.DATES & SCHEDULE12.04–05.05.2024OPENINGApril 11 2024, 6PMVENUESquare du 14-juin 1020 RenensMAPSTUDENTS, , , , , , , , , ,  , , , , , , , , UNDER THE DIRECTION OF HEAD OF PROGRAMME ASSISTANTS,

L'ECAL AT VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS Event
L'ECAL AT VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS

L ECAL AT VISIONS DU RÉEL: MASTERCLASS & ECAL FILMS,12–21.04.2024,Nyon As guest of honour at the 55th edition of the Visions du Réel festival in Nyon, filmmaker Jia Zhang-Ke will be giving a masterclass on Tuesday 16 April, organised in partnership with the Cinémathèque suisse. The programme also includes six films by the ECAL s Cinema Department and alumni. MASTERCLASS: JIA ZHANG-KE Cinéaste, Chine Moderated by Jean-Michel Frodon, film critic and journalist A leading figure in independent Chinese cinema, and contemporary cinema more broadly, Jia Zhang-Ke will be presenting a masterclass exploring his captivating and multifaceted oeuvre which examines the history of his country and the characters who inhabit it. A retrospective of his films will run throughout the festival edition. Born in 1970 in the mining region of Shanxi, bordered by the Great Wall of China, Jia Zhang-Ke is a leading light in contemporary cinema. He belongs to a generation of Chinese filmmakers who were profoundly affected by the Tiananmen Square protests. His diverse filmography, which comprises more than 20 short and feature works, borrows elements from both genre and non-fiction cinema. Switching from taught thrillers to documentaries and encompassing a myriad hybrid formats woven together by non-professional actors, fictional works on a canvas of reality, and fantasies bypassing otherwise restrained stories, Jia Zhang-Ke has spent two decades creating a filmography as coherent as it is shifting. His stylistically diverse oeuvre deploys the full range of cinematographic techniques (16 and 35mm, DV, HD, etc.). Approaching his subject as a visual artist, Jia Zhang-Ke offers a subtle and subversive immersion in Chinese society, imbued with a sublimated realism. Resisting censorship and tirelessly defending the cultural significance of his country s cinematic output, Jia Zhang-Ke weaves long-form, epic-style stories to explore personal and multifaceted journeys that challenge the notion of dissolution of the individual within the national narrative. Ever willing to wrestle with the realities of China s recent history, the filmmaker offers a profoundly humanist representation that draws on memories and recollections. To achieve this, Jia Zhang-Ke creates a narrative polysemy that focuses its gaze on the everyday lives of ordinary people living in “intermediate towns” scattered between the rural life and that of the country s burgeoning megacities. By doing so, Jia Zhang-Ke s films dissect the promises and mirages offered under the forced march of modernisation in effect since the 1960s. They examine the effects of this collective story, specifically the imposition of state capitalism on human beings, by providing a romantic and sensitive counter-narrative. An essential and uncompromising filmography that has often fallen foul of the government s strict censorship regime. An event in collaboration with the Cinémathèque suisse. Text: Visions du Réel FILMS As part of Visions du Réel, from April 12 to 21, 6 films by ECAL s Cinema Department and alumni are scheduled. “The Eskimo in the Mojave Desert”: Herbert Matter, a Designer Across Scenes and Genres Project
“The Eskimo in the Mojave Desert”: Herbert Matter, a Designer Across Scenes and Genres

“The Eskimo in the Mojave Desert”: Herbert Matter, a Designer Across Scenes and Genres Matter s career was that of a multidisciplinary, international designer working across commerce and culture. He was not only a graphic artist but also a photographer, type designer, art director, teacher and film-maker. His work in the field of advertising and editorial design, his collaborations with artists, his self-commissioned work, his photography and film outputs and his long-serving position as an educator provide as many entry points to analyse the impact of migration and an international network on a graphic designer s career. It also provides a case study to analyse the professional model of the designer working as photographer and layout artist simultaneously. The historiography on the Swiss graphic designer and photographer Herbert Matter (1907–1984) is characterised by a dichotomy. On the one hand, his oeuvre is partially well-known; some of his works are regarded as amongst “the most celebrated posters in design history” and have been published so widely that they make him a canonical figure of the highest degree. On the other hand, scholarship on his career is often shallow, repetitive and limited to the recurrent reproductions of a few selected artefacts. As is often the case with the canon, Matter s high visibility does not translate into a refined understanding of his work. Scholarship fails to contextualise him as a multifaceted graphic designer, photographer, and film-maker whose career did not fit within a specific style or movement, but reflected influences ranging from French poster artists, Swiss modernism and American pop culture. His profile was so unusual that the American graphic designer Paul Rand, who was active in corporate identity and branding, quipped: “I have always had the feeling that H[erbert] M[atter] on Madison Avenue was like an Eskimo in the Mohavi [sic] desert”, that is an out-of-place character in the world of New York advertising. The present project therefore provides a more nuanced discourse on Matter s career by relating his visual work to his influences and his migration between the three scenes in which he was active: Switzerland, France and the United States. It answers the following question: How did Herbert Matter s migration, transnational experiences and network shape his approach to graphic design?ApplicantsDr Jonas Berthod Prof. Gilles GavilletResearch teamDr Jonas Berthod (ECAL) Prof. Louise Paradis (Université du Québec à Montréal UQAM) Prof. Gilles Gavillet (ECAL)Period1.12.2023 – 31.1.2025Supported byHES-SO, Réseau de Compétences Design et Arts Visuels RCDAV

Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024 ECAL x Alloyed

Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024 ECAL x Alloyed For the Watches and Wonders Geneva 2024 trade show, ECAL/University of Art and DesignLausanne has teamed up with Alloyed, a company that specialises in metal printingtechnologies, to present an original collection of watch straps. Designed by students in theMaster of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship programme, thesewristbands have been developed using 3D modelling software, resulting in unique pieces thatgo beyond the limits of traditional techniques. Five of the 15 concepts designed by the students were selected and 3D printed from a finepowder of TI6AI4V titanium—an alloy composed of titanium, aluminium, and vanadium—whosemelting point of around 1,600° Celsius is obtained using a laser beam. Regularly used in theaerospace, and medical industries, this printing technique, known as Laser Powder BedFusion (L-PBF), can be used to create objects with ultra-high-performance mechanicalproperties. Each project, presented in the form of a prototype or animation, finds its inspiration in thebeauty of nature, through organic structures, as much as in complex systems, closer toengineering. This collaboration brings together technology, craftsmanship, and design—withlinks to the world of fine watchmaking—by combining the expertise of engineers specialising inthe science of materials, the know-how of artisan jewellers and their finishing skills, and thecreativity and innovative spirit of up-and-coming designers. CHRISTIAN MARCLAY × ECAL– PHOTOMATON Event
CHRISTIAN MARCLAY × ECAL– PHOTOMATON

CHRISTIAN MARCLAY × ECAL– PHOTOMATON,29.03–02.06.2024,Photo Elysée Artist Christian Marclay, invited to delve into the Photo Elysée collections in 2021, has explored the thousands of faces recorded by the museum s Photomaton. With him, ECAL s photography students have pored over, scanned and transformed the conserved prints. Four portraits taken by a machine and printed in a few minutes! This is the experience offered by the Photomaton since it was invented in 1924. It was an immediate success, especially with the proliferation of identity documents that require a portrait taken to specific standards. Very few people are unfamiliar with the experience of the Photomaton – the name of this photo booth installed in areas of high footfall. Automated, self-service, available 7 days a week, socially neutral, and above all less expensive than a portrait taken by a professional, and less intimidating too, this photographic process democratises the act of having a portrait taken, quickly, anywhere and at little cost. The ancestor of the Polaroid and the selfie, named after the words “photo” and “automaton”, this unmanned process, a veritable photographic automaton offering four unique prints, has often fascinated artists. A few years ago, Photo Elysée acquired an automated photo studio. Since then, the museum has been inviting members of the public to photograph themselves and, if they wish, leave their portraits to create a collective work of art. Multimedia artist Christian Marclay has explored thousands of faces recorded by the Photo Elysée Photomaton. With him, the students in the ECAL s Bachelor of Photography are making this archive their own through analogue and digital manipulations: collages, kinetic animations,  scanning electron microscope and new forms of automation based on artificial intelligence.DATESDu 29 mars au 2 juin 2024ADDRESSPhoto Elysée Pl. de la Gare 17 1003 LausanneWEBSITEwww.elysee.chSTUDENTS, , , , , , , TEACHERASSISTANTS, Angèle Marignac-Serra, OPENING28.03.2024

Nearly a century after its publication, the book holds a mythical status, often considered self-evident and rarely critically examined. The exhibition reevaluates the legacy of the new typography by literally unpacking Tschichold s library. In the exhibition, you can browse through almost all 120 sources cited in the essay, with high-quality facsimiles alongside rare originals. As an annex to the exhibition, the Belgian Institute for Graphic Design (BINGO) provides a contemporary and local response to Tschichold, developed in collaboration with Kunstenbibliotheek and the graphic design students of KASK & Conservatorium. This travelling exhibition is a research project of ECAL / University of Art and Design Lausanne (HES-SO), curated by Davide Fornari. Fiction film workshop with Carmen Jaquier Project
Fiction film workshop with Carmen Jaquier

Fiction film workshop with Carmen Jaquier The 2023 fiction film workshop for 2nd year students was lead by swiss director Carmen Jaquier. Head of workshop: "The initial proposal was to leave room for the students desires and quests, while offering a simple framework for the making of their second-year film. We worked from a single set, as vast as Michelangelo Frammartino s and the exhausted interior architecture of John Cassavetes characters. Together, we looked for simple, accessible, everyday ways of nurturing a story and characters. We wanted to capture gestures, ways of speaking, and significant details in people we know and don t know. We came up with "A Rock", a sort of collection of images, thoughts and interactions, with the idea of expanding the universe of the films. To avoid the black holes of writing, we set ourselves in action, in movement. We imagined the shoots as parties, and danced with Aurélien. Collages and skeletons invaded the white walls of the school, revealing the films to come. On the big screen, I watch, moved, two young brothers tearing themselves apart over a lie, three friends in a frenzy just before separation, a young man absorbed by his need for power, a friend giving in under the weight of the mountain, two sisters who have made a promise to each other, a son who summons his father s spirit through music, the love and death rites of a young kendoka, a group of girlfriends in search of an inner voice, and a fragmented young man, before the end of the world."
