Widely considered to be among the leading art and design institutions themselves, the ECAL approached internationally renowned designers, critics, and writers, whose answers reveal multiple approaches to teaching, in which individual style is not only encouraged, but rigorously pushed to develop into its most coherent professional form. Curated by acclaimed designer Jonathan Olivares and ECAL Director Alexis Georgacopoulos, the exhibition surveys a selection of twenty groundbreaking and defining projects by students and their tutors, all of them made out of fascinating teaching methods, leading to unconventional objects and revealed by a creative methodology in action, readily molding to accommodate the needs of the future. The exhibition shows a selection of these iconic projects and retraces their design process through a historical context. In other words, it challenges the question “How to best teach design today?”. A question that Max Bill and Ettore Sottsass tried to answer in 1983 in the context of the Design Since 1945 exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Their answer? Each gave a response that reflected his own image: the first emphasized the pragmatism and practicality of design. The second, its utopian and metaphorical character. These two lines of thought are found at the heart of the exhibition through its scenography: from the eccentric and colorful glass material to the functional and straightforward wooden structure, the exhibition answers the question in itself: there is not one but many best ways to teach design today. Beside the exhibition, the findings are also presented in a publication, published by Phaidon and edited by Jonathan Olivares et Alexis Georgacopoulos.

ON 2040 - MASTER TYPE DESIGN

ON 2040 - MASTER TYPE DESIGN Following a collaboration with the Swiss avant-garde brand On, ECAL is proud to present the interdisciplinary work carried out jointly by the 2nd year students of the Product Design, Photography and Type Design Masters. Under the direction of Larissa Kasper, artistic director invited by the MA in Type Design, 14 students question the construction of written language, and explore its futuristic developments, both alphabetical and ideographic. For On, they offer a new writing system, which will accompany the sole of the future.In 2010 On created a new running shoe sole with a disruptive approach: CloudTec®. Built around a set of “flexible elements”, On soles ensure cushioned landing and propulsive take-off for a unique running sensation. This design has since been adopted by running enthusiasts and professionals alike. Nowadays, the search for new materials and technologies encourages the brand to explore the future of soles. It is in this perspective that the collaboration between two leading entities in the Swiss design scene – ECAL and On – was born.Searching for an answer to what type of writing system could be readable for a machine in the distant future, this abstract typeface is based on a circular 5-channel encoding system, working similarly to linear punchcards. There are 25 punch combinations in the 5-channel type system, meaning 32 places to encode letters, which can host the basic Latin alphabet. Visually, the typeface was inspired by cuneiform writing, which uses the stylus on clay tablets to punch ‘holes in the material. This aesthetic has been warped into signifying a punch on a few of the 5 places and providing each character with a unique combination of digits and forms. By The concept of this dystopian writing system is inspired by the artwork The Garden of Earthly Delights (1490-1510) by Hieronymus Bosch and its tripartite structure. The Trinity takes the main role and divides the static skeleton vertically into 3 sections: Positive, Neutral, Negative; Birth, Life, Death; The Garden of Eden, The Garden of Delights and Hell. Round, angular and diagonal capital letters of the Latin alphabet are arranged in categories. With the help of 3 defined basic shapes: circle, square and line, the characters are constructed on its defined skeleton. Altogether, the writing system consists of 24 characters – the manuscript was painted analogue with black ink on translucent paper and emphasizes the dystopian character. By Between typography and pictogram, our design is evolving. Inspired by the geometric forms already present in the On logotype, we have rationalized to the extreme the concept of a refined and methodical graphic system. By a new problematic of the coded language, associated with contemporary technologies, a completely modular encrypted typography was drawn. The pictograms and letters are composed by a very simple system of curves and lines which evolve and are assembled on a square grid, divided in 4. The only rule being that the forms cannot be superimposed the ones on the others. The script is programmed under Python language, allowing to generate and to exhaust the whole of the possible ones, that is to say 624 pictograms only composed of curves, having to represent the sport, the movement and always assembled within the same grid. By , Over the course of our time, language and communication will evolve in such a way that current writing systems no longer suffice. While there will still be translation methods for older systems still known to us, the writing system of the future will free itself from present rules and conventions and organically evolve into something exceedingly more complex. By The blob is a mysterious unicellular slim mold creature growing into networks. Famous for its supposed immortality, it has also been showing signs of learning capabilities. After many years of scientific studies and stimulation, it is finally able to communicate with us in 2040. By using a morpheme-based system, the blob can express complex ideas with its web-like growths. As seen in this transcription (to be read clockwise), each tentacle and intersections represent a basic concept which is then extrapolated into sentences and finally a full text. By New proposal for sending out a message to the future about ON 20(40). This new form of constructed language and writing system is inspired by the thermal-transfer printing technics. This digital printing method is used when fast and higher durability of printed matter (especially against heat) is desired. This « New Alphabet » offers a set of uppercase characters, as well as numbers and has been developed during the one-week workshop. By In the far future, human beings will communicate in whole new ways, we will understand the world around us in a much more complex way. The two-dimensional way of reading will be slowly replaced by three-dimensional holograms, capable of giving us a faster prediction of what is written. Based on the Spatial reasoning IQ tests exercises, this new writing system helps the reader draw conclusions about shapes based on limited information. Each face of the regular polyhedron will have a unique symbol on it (letter) and the Platonic solid will represent the complexity of the entire word. Holograms are a perfect solution when we don t want our communication to be framed on a surface, but with this system, we could still write on psychical objects by simply unfolding the polyhedron into a 2D Pattern. By Over the course of our time, language and communication will evolve in such a way that current writing systems no longer suffice. While there will still be translation methods for older systems still known to us, the writing system of the future will free itself from present rules and conventions and organically evolve into something exceedingly more complex. By In order to create a “new alphabet” that could potentially store knowledge about ON 2040(0) and transmit it into the future, I developed a constructed writing system consisting of two different styles. Both styles are built on the same basis. While the more organic style has a line system for better differentiation of the individual “characters”, the restrained one has a subtle feature consisting of different stroke lengths on the edges. Despite the technical appearance, the two styles enable a visual structure of the content into different information levels, which should help decrypt the message in the future. By Klaudz is designed to visually represent speech sounds in a written form by means of symbols. The script is based on a so-called phonetic transcription, whose basic principle is that it is applicable to all languages. Since its symbols denote the same phonetic properties, they break away from a language-bound orthography. Thinking of 2040, when internationality and the spoken language are gaining more importance, it is obvious to explore the forms of expression of an alternative phonetic script. The shapes of the letters derive from an underlying grid (the IPA vowel table), which in turn corresponds to the positions of the vowels resulting from the physical position of a speaker s tongue when pronouncing those sounds. There is a round and a non-round version of each. The consonants are integrated into the script according to their groupings as diacritical marks. By

I Feel So Vacation Today…

Stefan Tanase – I Feel So Vacation Today… I Feel so Vacation Today… is a time machine that brings an existing scene from 2019 into the continuous present, namely the atypical sequence from the For Sale exhibition that took place in Bern at Ballostar Mobile, where Ștefan Tănase simulated his own accident by driving a car through the gallery window. To succeed, the artist himself used a sledgehammer with which he broke the window. The accumulation of ideas inevitably took off through a snowball technique, rolling and growing increasingly. Tănase manages to find the humorous formula between post-communist aesthetics and western economics as exemplified by the communist slogan “we work, we don t think!”.

There she meets Antoine, the young owner of the place. Antoine is a little boorish and macho and tries to seduce her. But Laurence is there for a specific purpose: to give him a letter containing a secret. Fiction / 30 min Synopsis Laurence, a Parisian in her fifties, is spending a few days in an isolated holiday cottage in the Lozère, in southern France. She has really come here to meet Antoine, 27, the owner of the property and to give him a letter. As they try to get to know each another, a strange atmosphere develops between the two of them. Laurence finds it really difficult to give him the envelope and reveal what is inside. Student s comment During my two years of study, I learned the skills necessary to become a professional film editor (AVID editing software, sound collaboration, colour grading). Workshop after workshop, I learned from my teachers and classmates how to think like a professional film editor: how to convey the emotions of the audience; when to slow down the pace and when to speed it up; what shots to select; how to communicate with the director to help them make the film they want, as it was the case with Marie Chemin.

Dominik Bissem – Rivale Rivale Serif and Rivale Grotesk are the main typefaces in this family. Both styles are designed to be used at the same time, while retaining their own character. The structure is not mathematically based on the same skeleton, the optical impression stands in the foreground and reflects the concept of the system: as homogeneous as necessary and as independent as possible. Throughout the design process both styles constantly influenced one another, and the system grew organically. Serif and Grotesk come in five weights – light, regular, medium, bold, and dark – with matching italics. The presentation attempts to show the typefaces in a realistic terrain and contrasts them with the author s own paintings.

Laurine Joyeux – Les mouches de Beni (Script supervisor) As a script supervisor, I worked with the director on her film, from the writing stage to the shooting. Fiction / 20 min Synopsis One evening, Beni, a young woman, meets her 65 year old neighbour Gégé. The two women become friends and Beni invites Gégé to discover her world through a surprising adventure. The birth of their cross-generational friendship will shed light on the complexity of bipolarity, a disorder from which Beni suffers. Music unites them and strengthens the core of their friendship. Student s comment As a script supervisor, I worked with a director on her film, from the writing stage to the shooting. I was involved right from the preparation stage, setting the timings. This first task helps detect the first inconsistencies in a scenario and to raise general questions about the rhythm. My priority on the set was to supervise the script, which is my main working tool, and to ensure that the intentions of each scene were respected. I monitored the film s continuity both in terms of the story s development and the acting. Another important function in my work was to anticipate the editing process, the aim being that at the final viewing, the story is as coherent as possible, which involves writing reports and gathering important notes for the editor. Masen Al-Saghir – Jabal Jabal is a collection of plastic-free, repairable and recyclable mountain jackets. It consists of a jacket and a down jacket. The fastening has been redesigned with a fold system, without zips. It also allows the width of the jacket to be adjusted according to the number of layers worn. Jabal is made entirely of durable materials: high-density woven cotton, waxed cords and aluminium fasteners. The seams are heat-sealed with natural adhesive. The down jacket is filled with milkweed, a plant that is as light as feather but twice as insulating. No chemicals or watering are required for its production. The materials can be separated for easy recycling. Resin-impregnated patches are provided to repair snags.

Director and programmer of festivals, notably of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs at the Cannes Film Festival, Paolo Moretti will take over the responsibility of the Cinema Department of ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne in September 2022. He will succeed Pauline Gygax as head of the Bachelor Cinema program and Lionel Baier for the Master Cinema program (co-directed by HEAD Geneva). "I am above all very grateful to ECAL for offering me this opportunity. I am excited to continue the work initiated by Lionel Baier, then Pauline Gygax and to confront myself with a new dimension of the transmission of the codes and languages of contemporary cinema", says Paolo Moretti. After studying modern literature, between 2001 and 2008, Paolo Moretti worked for several film festivals and institutions in Europe, including the Centre Pompidou, the Filmoteca Española, the Cinemateca Portuguesa, the Leeds Film Festival and Cinéma du Réel. From 2008 to 2011, he was assistant to the director and programming advisor at the Venice Film Festival. In 2012 and 2013, he is a programming advisor for the Rome Film Festival (CinemaXXI). Since 2012, he has been collaborating with the Visions du Réel festival (Nyon), first as a member of the selection committee (2012-2017), then as an artistic advisor. From 2012 to 2018, he is also a member of the selection committee of FIDMarseille. He is the associate producer of the American independent feature film L for Leisure by Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn, presented at the Rotterdam Film Festival in 2014. Between 2014 and 2020, he works as a director of the La Roche-sur-Yon International Film Festival and of the art house cinema Le Concorde. Between 2018 and 2022, he is the general delegate of the Quinzaine des réalisateurs at the Cannes Film Festival. Since 2020, he has been the director of the art house cinema Les Cinémas du Grütli in Geneva, where he will be able to continue to carry out his mission in conjunction with ECAL, thanks to a redistribution of tasks, notably administrative, of the Geneva institution. "Paolo Moretti has an exceptional network and a rich and varied international experience, punctuated by numerous successes. Through his desire to constantly highlight the films of young talent, he has established himself over time as a valuable and privileged interlocutor for filmmakers and the industry. I am sure that his approach as an outstanding facilitator will suit our students perfectly and will lead them to progress even further and to surpass themselves", says Alexis Georgacopoulos, ECAL Director. For the Bachelor Cinema program, Paolo Moretti will replace Pauline Gygax - who will keep a part of her teaching at ECAL, but will concentrate primarily on her activity as a producer, the intensity of which obliges her to reduce her workload within the Cinema Department. As for Lionel Baier, co-director of the Master Cinema program, he will continue his career as a director, while also maintaining a teaching schedule at the Lausanne school. After viewing a few scenes from different films and becoming familiar with the use of a camera, participants will be divided into small groups and will write a very short sequence, which they will direct and act out. Patrick Muroni is a Swiss film director who graduated from the Ba in Film Studies at ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne. He won the artistic encouragement prize of the city of Renens during his studies. After his training, he directed "Un matin d été", his first self-produced short fiction film, which was selected in several festivals around the world. He then directed his second short film, "Les Sentinelles", which was also selected in several countries. "Ardente-x-s" is his first feature-length documentary film, scheduled for release in 2022. Margot Sparkes (born in 1993 in Paris) is an independent artist, photographer and video maker who graduated from the ECAL/Ecole cantonale d art de Lausanne (2020). She lives and works in Lausanne. Her practice explores the way our environment shapes our behaviour and our feelings. Through video, photography and sculpture, she seeks to generate representations and perceptions that question our relationship to what surrounds us, deploying new imaginaries that interweave several forms of reality, existence and narratives. Persis Bekkering is a metamorphic writer, engaging with a wide spectrum of artistic disciplines. She is interested in the emotional landscape of the contemporary, searching for new narrative forms that reflect a present permanently marked by crisis. Her recent publications include (fictocritical) essays, art criticism and fiction. Her debut novel Een heldenleven (The Life of a Hero), published in 2018, was shortlisted for the ANV Debut Prize. Her second novel Exces, shortlisted for the BNG Bank Prize for Literature, was published in 2021, part of which has been translated in English as Last Utopia by the Jan Van Eyck Academy in Maastricht. In recent history, the notion of youth has so often been conflated with “bringing down the house” that we now expect everything from it: to reinvent us, to shake us up, to carry us, to succeed in what others have failed at (establishing the most open communities possible), to build bridges for the future, to be radical, to be uncompromising where anyone outside of youth has already given up, to be desirable where others are overwhelmed. But with what means? If not those that young people make themselves, for themselves, with elements that they alone will have chosen? With their culture, their places, their clandestinity. A Historical Perspective The representations, discourses and other obsessions about "youth" often say less about young people than about the authorities that forge them: politicians, institutions, media, artists... In themselves, these representations are interesting: they express anxieties, doubts and hopes, but also strong opinions, sometimes peremptory visions that often translate fantasies. In such a landscape, cinema in particular is an excellent medium when it projects its lights and cameras on youth. It is these ways of telling the story of youth that this presentation addresses. But it does not stop there. For beyond the representations, what remains the most fascinating are the modalities of socialization that young people know and come across, in all their diversity. In this sense, this presentation will also question the relationship to time, historicity as an awareness of taking part in history and situating oneself in it, age identities, and generational belonging. Agnès Gayraud "Will You Love Me When I m Sixty Four?" Pop Music as an Art of Ages Folklore has long been interpreted as the "childhood of art", a form of expression invented by popular classes and considered as the living vestige of humanity s childhood. From its outset, recorded folk music has been appreciated as a form of "primaverism", the conviction that things in their prime are the most valuable, that authenticity stems not only from the origin but from the beginning. A recording fixes individual voices and their organic idiosyncrasies at the moment of their expression, and in so doing, it captures the aura of a primitive past. The fixed expressivity of recorded voices represents countless individual incarnations, and this has made pop music the most powerful musical art form to bear witness to all ages of life, not just childhood or youth. Rather than associating pop music with a particular stage of life, with a phase of inexperience (innocence, naivety, regression or youth), it is tempting to question its rooting in the expression of ages in general. Contemporary musicians such as Angèle, Oklou, and Arca accurately represent post-adolescence, sexual maturity, and the pleasure of finally flirting with the pornographic category of "adult" content, all while reflecting on youthism, contemporary ageism, and sexist domination. Here, individual embodiment takes as its theme its own situated expression. In contrast to these younger artists, Bob Dylan sang later in his life,"It s not dark yet but it s getting there". This priority given to the expression of individuality at various ages (one s body, one s sexuality, one s race, which make sense only by situating a generation in terms of someone s legal and physiological age), is what binds deeply popular recorded music to what the history of western musical art has at some point thought to have overcome during the 20th century: the romantic confidence in situated individualities, in particular incarnations, in singularities. In the contemporary artistic field, reflexive forms of art only recognize their historical age. Individual age is not a key to understanding the content of their gesture, one deciphers it rather in light of their epoch. Popular music, to the contrary, presents itself as a musical art powerfully carried by the expressiveness of the ages, even if it means sometimes to render eternal a youth whose legal status as such proceeds from the whole liberal system. Persis Bekkering The Rave Continuum. Researching Plot and Politics of "Europe s Last Youth Culture" As much as any experience fails to be adequately grasped by language, the experience of the rave presents the storyteller with a specific, intriguing challenge. As the narrator in Rainald Goetz experimental novel Rave (1998) remembers: "It was the wordless time, when we were always looking around with our big eyes so strangely in every possible situation, shaking our heads, and could almost never say anything but: speechless – pf –" The rave, at its best, is a wordless suspension of time; a limit experience; an event blurring linear understandings of time and space, proposing its own logic. As music theorist Simon Reynolds once quoted the (unbelievably perfect) shouts of an MC at a hardcore party: We ve lost the plot . What does this mean if one tries to translate the rave into narrative? How to grasp its thwarted, warped, halted temporality? For her last novel Exces, part of which is published in English as the novella Last Utopia, writer Persis Bekkering has attempted to find an answer to these problems. The questions of narrative structure and temporality of the rave may look like purely formal ones, but they are closely tied to bigger, historical or even philosophical questions: how to understand the rave and the emergence of rave culture, at the end of the 1980s, in its time? Why did it emerge at that peculiar historical moment, when the end of history and telos of progress was famously declared, utopian ideologies lost their claim, and capitalism entered a new phase? And what did the rave propose to it: resistance or acceleration? Maybe both? In her presentation, Bekkering takes us through a meandering journey along her ongoing artistic and literary research, sharing images, texts, fragments and shouts in the dark, from her archive. Throughout the various parts and fragments, one can hear the constant drone of the search for the aesthetic expression of the permanent presence of crisis in our time. Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel About Bébé Colère Screening of the film followed by a round table discussion. For more than ten years now, Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel have been weaving together a body of work that has no equivalent within French cinema. Whether through their first feature film Jessica forever (2018), or through their numerous short and medium-length films, (Martin pleure, 2017; Notre héritage, 2015; or Tant qu il nous restera des fusils à pompe, 2014, which won the Golden Bear at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival), they follow the destiny of their own generation (they are both less than 35 years old). This is a generation which feeds on heroism through the virtual, a generation that met porn before love and online violence before friendship, a generation for which the video game is its lost paradise. Yet they draw from it, and this is their strength, a form of romanticism, which never wants to believe in the end of emotions. Their lyricism is unprecedented because it comes after: after the images, after the clichés, after the disillusionment, after they have been told that “no, really, sorry, there is nothing left to expect from anything, everything has been played out”. In the spring of 2020, when the earth had just come to a halt due to the Covid pandemic, Jonathan and Caroline retreated to Corsica where they dreamed of an unseen body that escaped from a video game: Bébé Colère [Baby Anger]. Bébé Colère denies his parents, Bébé Colère has no friends, Bébé Colère vomits the world and feeds on emptiness. In 13 minutes, Bébé Colère is an irreducible work that paints a portrait of a 2.0 youth caught in disarray. A post-human body, which has denied its origins and only sees the future through the features of an avatar. Caroline Poggi and Jonathan Vinel will discuss the possibility of romanticism today, and the conditions that allow them to invent new characters, generating their own disordered chronology. They will also talk about their aesthetic relationship with video games: the baby in Bébé Colère is a pre-programmed asset purchased online to be animated and then integrated into the film. In close collaboration with Lucien Krampf, they are also currently developing a project conceived inside a game engine. In their work, they consider the game as a new narrative track while also using pre-existing elements. "Donbass" by Sergei Loznitsa - 121min - 2018 In the Donbass, a region of Eastern Ukraine, a hybrid war takes place, involving an open armed conflict alongside killings and robberies on a mass scale perpetrated by separatist gangs. In the Donbass, war is called peace, propaganda is uttered as truth and hatred is declared to be love. A journey through the Donbass unfolds as a chain of curious adventures, where the grotesque and drama are as intertwined as life and death. This is not a tale of one region, one country or one political system. It is about a world, lost in post-truth and fake identities. It is about each and every one of us.
