Belle Dune - "See You Later, Alligator..." A police investigation in Belle Dune, a small seaside resort in the north of France. This graduation film is a pilote of a series. A short film by Léonard Sinclair, photographed by Maxime Beaud Fiction / 18 min Synopsis The mutilated corpse of an English tourist is found in a tree, close to a small seaside resort in the north of France. Lieutenant Angela Jumcaucourt starts to investigate. Jérôme Montpied, a solitary young man from Belle Dune with few prospects, is profoundly changed by this macabre incident. It is as if he had found a new lease of life. Comment At Fort-Mahon Plage, the dunes are beautiful, but danger lurks. Thus begins episode 1 of season 1 in which Lieutenant Angela Jumcaucourt investigates the murder of a tourist whose mutilated body was found in a vacant lot. Tumultuous seaside atmospheres, anonymous letters, ghostly Cadillac, everything here contributes to the suspense and strangeness. Leonard Sinclair, with his meticulous direction, plays with the codes. As a good forensic scientist, he dissects genre films to better lose us and surprise us. Like a Bruno Dumont who has watched too much David Lynch s films or a Tati lost in a Yves Klein s painting, Léonard has fun to blur the tracks, very sandy by the way. Each sequence is constructed to distill its share of micro-details like so many potential clues, until transforming the film into a role-playing game both playful and totally addictive. There is something hypnotic about following this endless quest and we want more. In this seaside labyrinth, where nothing is ever totally stable, the fantastic is likely to appear at every slip of the whodunit. In the end, the only thing to watch out for is not so much the hypothetical episode 2 as the future of this talented young filmmaker. Raphaël Sohier / Sound editor

Mathilde Avogadro – It s OK How do social media have an impact on individuals? How can this constant flow of information nourish me, shape and influence my own personality and feelings? How can it have an impact on self-esteem and be self-empowering at the same time? There is a gap between the constant feed of images and texts and my own loneliness. I stop the clock to draw attention to a global mode of communication that also produces inner communication as the result of every single feed echoing within us. ECAL x Bloc studios: Rational Balance Collection,06–09.06.2019,EDIT Napoli ECAL x Bloc studios: Rational Balance Collection On the occasion of EDIT Napoli from 6 to 9 June 2019, ECAL and Bloc studios present a collection of projects by BA Industrial Design students. IMAGES HD Marble connotes weight, stability and robustness, and is a quintessentially noble material. In light of this, what kind of objects are able to take full advantage of these properties? How can the sensations of balance or weight be fully expressed, while respecting the innate qualities and limits of this substance? This was the question that ECAL /University of Art and Design Lausanne Industrial Design Bachelor s students addressed in 2016 at a workshop led by Swiss designers Joséphine Choquet and Virgile Thévoz. This collection has been jointly developed over recent years by Bloc studios and ECAL, and comprises a selection of objects that focus on the rational balance between materials and proportions – playful ball-joint mirrors, punk marble plates pierced through with steel, marble vases in tension with aluminium, minimal tub plugs and mesmerising wedged vases. Aesthetics of Sustainability Aesthetics of Sustainability aims to explore and define the aesthetics of a new generation of sustainable materials. Sustainability is one of the most important topics of the 21st century. Design, as a discipline of innovation, must play a leading role in optimising the environmental impact of all by-products and processes in the production of designed goods. All too often, most people take a stereotypical view of “sustainable products”. They are often associated with dirty colours and unpleasant aesthetics, owing to the use of second-grade, recycled, “primitive”, natural or non-processed materials. Furthermore, they are usually associated with higher prices or inferior quality. Aesthetics of Sustainability aims to explore and define the aesthetics of a new generation of sustainable materials. The goals of the project are to push boundaries, explore aesthetics and define a contemporary language of sustainable materials and products through a systematic process of investigation, experimentation, creation and development within the context of product design. The low impact of products is not only necessary, but it is also about to become a unique selling point for manufacturers. The tipping point when eco-friendly materials become more easily available and financially competitive on a larger scale will soon be reached. The outcome of the project is a series of 14 dossiers on the explored materials as well as mock-ups and prototypes of the resulting products. The project offers a future generation of designers an array of operational tools and knowledge which explain how to discover, analyse and process seminal materials, how to work best with their qualities and how to turn them into functional yet aesthetically intriguing objects.Main applicant sECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research team (senior researcher) (professor) (professor) (research assistant) (research assistant) (photographer) (photographer)Visiting lecturersYves Corminboeuf, Alexandre Echasseriau, Adam Fairweather, Beat Karrer, Chris Lefteri, Yves Leterrier, Mieke Meijer, Axel Norlander, Martin PostlerStudents1st-year MA students in Product Design, ECAL, class of 2018-2019: , , , , , , , ,, , , , , Periodseptember 2017 – july 2019Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne Strategic fund of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO RCDAV)DisseminationPublication Thilo Alex Brunner, Aesthetics of sustainability. The INFORMATION MESH project,17.05.2019,swissnex San Francisco INFORMATION MESH is a web platform celebrating the 30th anniversary of the World Wide Web that explores social, technical, cultural and legal facts throughout different interactive timelines. The project was realized by BA Media & Interaction Design students from ECAL. www.infomesh.org It was initiated in October 2018 during a one week workshop in partnership with swissnex San Francisco, where students visited key partners and began developing the project. The timelines present an overview of Web history, starting with the proposal for hypertext by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN in 1989, initially under the name "Information Mesh." From this start date, users can then explore 30 years of evolution. The ECAL study group is part of the swissnex Salon, a series of activities exploring the impact of technology on fundamental societal values drawn from the preamble of the Swiss Constitution. This project playfully examines the Utopian idealism at the heart of the Web, reconnecting us to the original optimism surrounding these communication technologies with a critical engagement regarding where we have arrived today. This presents an opportunity to return a collective focus on how we might bring the human back to the center of innovation. "U-Joints" exhibition,01–29.05.2019,Gallery l elac Curated by Andrea Caputo and Anniina Koivu, the "U-Joints" exhibition features the first chapter of an ongoing research initiated on the occasion of the Milan Design Week 2018. A large selection of nails, screws, rivets, bolts and nuts is shown alongside products created by international designers and a new taxonomy of basic fasteners, graphically developed by Graphic Thought Facility. Opening reception 1.05.2019, 18 h – 20 h Dates 2.05.2019 – 29.05.2019 Wednesday – Friday 13 h – 17 h Galerie l elac 5, avenue du Temple CH-1020 Renens IMAGES HD U-Joints is a research project led by Andrea Caputo and Anniina Koivu, as well as a group exhibition that explores the idea of connections in design.Initiated on the occasion of the Milan Design Week 2018, the first U-Joints exhibition was an eclectic introduction to the topic of connections. Taking a look at the multifaceted world of joints, curators Andrea Caputo and Anniina Koivu broke joints open, organised them by material and production processes, reassembled them into prototypes, and used them in real-world applications. For eight days, U-Joints brought together 919 pieces – from the most common joints to design s most innovative ones, as well as those that have had the greatest influence on contemporary design. This captivating introduction launched the U-Joints research project, which is now in the process of investigating different kinds of connections even more deeply. Ultimately, the research project s findings will be published in a large volume that examines joinery in furniture and product design. U-Joints takes a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach. Featuring technical information about joinery as well as stories and commentaries, U-Joints looks at human history through its details, and invites us to see our built environment in whole new ways. The ongoing U-Joints research is accompanied by a series of exhibitions. Each show reads like a chapter of the future book. The first chapter in this series is the current U-Joints exhibition at Galerie l elac at ECAL/University of Art & Design Lausanne. Dedicated to very basic fasteners, the exhibition features a large selection of nails, screws, rivets, bolts and nuts, alongside products created by 20 international designers and a new taxonomy diagram created just for U-Joints. Andrea Caputo says: “Within the world of ‘connections we imagine including any field of investigation, from architecture to product design to fashion. It is an extremely scalable concept, and we aim to investigate not only the fundamental constructive principles but also to conduct methodological analysis. The manufacture of the joint can coincide with an industrial, artisanal or extremely extemporaneous and experimental process.” Anniina Koivu says: “Designers appropriate standard connectors; they assemble and personalise them. Sometimes, they invent new joinery from scratch. Always, they use joints to create unique objects. But because a joint is often invisible, hidden elegantly inside an object, it can pass by unnoticed. U-Joints seeks to change this.” The Taxonomy of Joints Taxonomy is the science of describing, identifying, naming and classifying organisms. The Taxonomy of Joints traces the macrocosm of joinery in furniture and product design today. Starting from the most common production techniques, the structure creates a genealogical tree that is divided into four families, twenty subfamilies and a still-to-be-defined number of individual joints. The taxonomy exhibited here looks at basic fasteners: nails, screws, rivets, bolts and nuts, in 192 of their most common examples. Much like that of an organism, The Taxonomy of Joints can grow or change its form: it is a work in progress. The taxonomy on display was graphically developed by British studio Graphic Thought Facility. Antoine Flahaut – Wasteland Jérôme has failed his High-School leaving exams. He spend the day with his best friend, David before to go to a party. Fiction / 18 min Synopsis Jérôme has failed his High-School leaving exams. His best friend, David, has passed his exams and is getting ready to leave. They spend the day hanging out around their village, where they know every nook and cranny, and in the evening go to a party with their old schoolmates... Summer is just beginning but their friendship seems doomed to end. Comment Antoine Flahaut was to write a feature film script to conclude his studies at ECAL. His preliminary documentation work soon took on the scope of a gigantic research project, commensurate with the ambition of the project. By telling the story of a young man from a working class family in Montbéliard in the spring of 1968, Antoine was indeed proposing to resurrect a world. Wasteland is a gesture. An almost improvised short film, faithful in the background to the scenario of the feature film, but which also frees itself from it to better reconnect with the original inspiration of its author. A series of sensitive and fragile moments that reveal a soul, that of a boy on the border between childhood and manhood. A poem of vertigo in the face of the opacity of life, between nostalgia and the call of the sea, between early disenchantment and great hopes. Emmanuel Salinger / Actor, screenwriter, director

Callum Ross – You can t see the mountain from the peak In the present day, the evolution of the quality of CGI forces us to question our relationship to digital representations of our world and the impact they have on us. This project explores the current ambiguity of the digital image through an interactive short film based around mountain imagery, used for its symbolism of an everlasting geological phenomenon, but which paradoxically, are some of the fastest images to generate. Through the use of a smartphone, we navigate this variable experience between real and virtual, gradually questioning the reality of the situation that is shown.

HD Images Brochure with explanations Picasso, Giacometti, ECAL. Some projects sometimes give rise to what may first seem to be unlikely associations. In this case, it turned out for the best. The Musée national Picasso-Paris challenged ECAL to create new seats, at once practical and discreet and yet with distinctive character, for the exhibition areas. We rose to the challenge. In order to best respond to the visitors needs, ECAL commissioned a group of nine students and graduates to carry out a study on the seats of fifty museums or so in Europe (Germany, England, Spain, France, Italy, the Netherlands and Switzerland). Inspired by this survey, 2nd year Bachelor Industrial Design students worked with materials of their choice under the guidance of designer and professor Chris Kabel. Isabelle Baudraz s ‘Tie bench was selected from the projects put forward before being assessed in situ to make sure it blended with the architecture of the museum and the works of the Spanish genius. The benches were finally produced by the outdoor furniture company Tectona. All the project participants worked in a concerted manner and the project was a great success. Picasso and Giacometti can definitely sit easy. Opening hours Monday 16 April – Saturday 21 April, 10 am – 7 pm Tectona Showroom Via della Moscova 47/a 20121 Milano www.tectona.net www.museepicassoparis.fr

ECAL x Marsotto Lab,17–22.04.2018,Spazio Bigli, Milan In partnership with the Italian marble furniture manufacturer Marsotto Lab, ECAL Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury & Craftsmanship students present a series of table and wall clocks, created following a workshop led by Jaime Hayon. HD Images Brochure with explanations Further to the growing success of the Marsotto Edizioni collections, which are collaborations with today s major designers, the Italian marble specialist launched Marsotto Lab. This new platform will enable the work of young and promising designers as well as that of students from art and design schools to be produced. The family business entrusted ECAL, and more specifically its Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship students, with the Marsotto Lab s first edition. The students were given the opportunity to highlight the material properties while working on table and wall clocks. During their visit to the manufacture near Verona, the students discovered the impressive production plant, which has been recently optimised with the acquisition of new, cutting-edge equipment. With an experience in marble handed down from generation to generation, as a company, Marsotto excels at combining technology and artisans know-how to design ever more innovating and contemporary pieces. Following their trip, the students were given the opportunity to develop their ideas with the Spanish designer Jaime Hayon, who wished to share his inspiration and his very forward-looking vision of design. GLASSWORKS x ECAL at TRESOR Contemporary Craft,21–24.09.2017,Messe Basel Matteo Gonet (Glassworks) and ECAL have teamed in order to design and produce a glass chandelier. The project was directed by London-based designer Bethan Laura Wood and involved the students of the Master of Advanced Studies in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship of ECAL. At the end of a workshop, "Goethe", the project created by a group of four students (Savvas Laz, Maximilian Maertens, Mauro Martinho, Enrico Pietra), was selected and produced into a working prototype by the Münchenstein-based glassblower. From the colorful universe of sweets, these students focused on the creation of a wide variety of pieces to illustrate the different techniques that only glassblowers can master. The tubular forms interlockwith a metal structure to create a unique installation, such as a contemporary chandelier, resulting in a perfect celebration of student s creativity and craftsmanship. The Sausage of the Future Can we count on the sausage to provide a solution, in order to reduce the consumption of meat? And can the use of new ingredients increase the diversity of our diets? Can the sausage make a considerable contribution to a sustainable food culture? To answer these questions, a chef of molecular gastronomy, a master butcher and a designer have teamed up to look into sausage production techniques and potential new ingredients – such as insects, nuts, and legumes – to reinvent the sausage of the future. The final publication Sausage of the Future takes the reader on a journey through all the building blocks of a sausage. It stops along the way to explore issues like moistness, flavoring, glue, and preservation. The publication catalogues different types of sausages and presents lesser-known ingredients, carefully selected for their potential regarding the future. In our days, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), we are facing a serious shortage of protein-rich-food. The reason is the overconsumption of animal products. Meat, in particular, will be scarce: thus, we need alternatives. The sausage is one of mankind s first-ever designed food items. A paragon of efficient butchery, it was originally designed to make the most of animal protein in times of scarcity. With its wide variety of sizes and its endless choice of possible fillings, the sausage offers itself again to take a pioneering role. This time, not only to make the most of animal protein, but to be a shell for all kinds of nutrition.Main applicantsECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne (project leader)Research teamSupervision Mock-ups Gabriel Serero Herman ter Weele Graphic design and illustrations Helge Hjorth Bentsen Olli Hirvonen Photography Emile Barret Noortje Knulst Jonas MarguetPeriodmarch 2014 – november 2017Supported byECAL/University of Art and Design LausanneDisseminationPublication Carolien Niebling, The Sausage of the Future, Zurich: Lars Müller Publishers, 2017. Patrick thus continues to question his relationship to the world through hard-hitting rhymes that mix violence, solitude and obstinacy, against a backdrop of romance. A bluffing direction of actor, a fragile thread that the director unrolls and holds from beginning to end, a film with a tense flow, like an intimate flow that reveals the fragility of this world of youth, where everything should still be possible.

Benjamin Hurni – Corpus Muros Corpus Muros is a project that aims to transpose the impact that social pressure exerts on people in today s society onto the human body. Uniform-looking humanoïd figures devoid of any specific characteristics are then born. They become human-shaped shells for the soul they contain. Envelopes to protect ourselves from one another and to appear as perfect as possible. As a consequence, the body becomes a representation of the psychological state, alternatively a battlement and a proud sculpture. Zoel Aeschbacher – Bonobo In an HLM building, three tenants with very dissimilar life stories were about to see their paths intertwine. Fiction / 18 min Synopsis In an HLM building, three tenants with very dissimilar life stories were about to see their paths intertwine. Felix, a disabled retiree living on the 13th floor; Ana, a single mother on the 6th floor, who was facing eviction; and Seydou, a passionate dancer, and one without any formal training, who resided on the 4th floor. It was by way of the old building elevator, a dilapidated broken vehicle of transport, that their life became merged in its descent toward an inescapable tragic and infernal destiny.

UPDATE Exposition «Walk with Pierre Hardy» au Japon After Paris, Pierre Hardy & ECAL/University of Art and Design Lausanne are pleased to present the photo exhibition WALK WITH PIERRE HARDY in Japan. Fifteen iconic models by the designer were visually reinterpreted by the students of Bachelor Photography under the direction of Philippe Jarrigeon. Additionally, a luxurious special publication marks the occasion. To be discovered from 11 to 13 November 2016 (10 am to 7 pm) at the Pierre Hardy boutique (9-11 Place du Palais-Bourbon). HD pictures: www.ecal.ch/en/1649 “I really enjoyed interacting with the students. At ECAL, my role was very different from that of a teacher coaching the students on their work – as I myself was the subject I knew the stuff inside out! Just show me half a centimetre of a heel and I instantly recognise the model which I created”, says Pierre Hardy. The ECAL Bachelor Photography students thus worked on various collections produced by the Parisian designer in the past fifteen years in order to give them a new visual interpretation. Photographer Philippe Jarrigeon comments on the method he chose to conduct this workshop at ECAL: “Together with Pierre Hardy s team we selected fifteen pairs of shoes in the archives – a purely practical decision which allowed us to keep the models as long as we wanted at ECAL. In addition, this allowed students to free themselves from seasonal trends. At the beginning of the workshop in October 2015, each student got a model on which to work by drawing lots”. This project allowed the students to question the relationship between photography and footwear, and by extension to confront the interconnection between photography and fashion. Milo Keller, Head of Photography at ECAL, observes that “Students, working without any business constraints in that case, are less formatted than a professional and therefore often offer unexpected approaches”. The results are indeed surprising and offbeat, sometimes even provocative or poetic, but always treat the original creations with respect.
